[opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I usually take the newest openSUSE kernel (from repository Kernel_stable). But since some month I have a DVB T2 HD card, which requires a patch (see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194171) So I need to compile kernels myself. I have a working compilation path. But the current path has 12 steps! It takes some time. I wonder, why it is so complicated to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE. Is there a better/easier/automated way to configure, compile and install a Kernel under openSUSE? I know this blog article. But the article uses Vanilla kernels and also needs 6 steps. With additional patches (4 steps), third-party modules (2 steps) and cleanup (1 step) the article would also need 13 steps: Compiling the Linux Kernel, the SUSE way https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/compiling-de-linux-kernel-suse-way/ This is my Kernel configuration, compilation and installation path: 1. On the odd chance that I was ignored for possibly hijacking a thread, I shall start a new one but copy and paste my comments in hope of an answer: (re: Killing ReiserFS) I have been following this thread with some interest because of having been running ReiserFS since before he turned homicidal. I have had zero, count that ZERO, problems in all that time so I read with some dismay the effort to actively kill its usage in this whatever-you-call-it distro. I think that the more relevant question to ask is not "can we keep this file system around, pretty please" but "what distros are allowing its use by not actively trying to kill it"? I have used opensuse since before Mandrake went away, which has been a while and, although I don't really want to change distros, I am not married to suse (or leap, or whatever). I feel that what we have here with opensuse/leap is an example of the classic "swing" cartoon which shows the stages of project development from sales, engineering, installation and what the customer actually wanted. My need is not as complex as some and for that ReiserFS works quite well. So, my question remains, "If not suse/leap, then who"? [opensuse] IPv6 Rogue Router Security Issue

Hi Folks, There seems to be a flurry of IPv6 talk going on, maybe this is time for me to bring up the rogue router problem again? I asked about this a couple of times over the years but could never find anyone to comment on it. First, here's the RFC that describes the problem: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6104 Rogue routers have affected me personally at a customer's site. This is a large, professionally managed, dual-stacked network with a number of v4 class B addresses and thousands of hosts. Subnets seem to be /20 CIDR in size, so there are plenty of "neighbors" on any given subnet. I've encountered the situation where misconfigured Windows systems will advertise themselves as an IPv6 router. They then happily accept traffic and drop it all silently on the floor. This problem doesn't seem to bother other Windows boxes too much, but it absolutely kills SSH connections. SSH preferentially tries IPv6 port 22, which when sent to a dumb Windows box results in very long hangups and connection failures. My workaround for my cohort of Linux desktops and servers was to disable IPv6 for both ssh and sshd. This will work for as long as the host network supports dual stacks, but eventually? Then there's the issue of intentional MITM attacks using this vector. If a bad actor has physical access to a subnet, or has compromised a host on that subnet, your goose is cooked. This link mentions some mitigations, but they're quite technical and may require hardware support. https://community.infoblox.com/t5/IPv6-Center-of-Excellence/Holding-IPv6-Ne… So, what is the threat to a home IPv6 user who has WiFi and an Internet of Things with minimal/non-existent security? I personally feel safer behind a nice natted IPv4 firewall with ACL rules between my copper and WiFi subnets. I just feel that I have more control of the situation with a simpler network. Ie, mark the start of the movie, the end, the commercials inside, and dump all that into a single file, perhaps recoding. One limitation is that movies here have two sound tracks, one in Spanish, and the other one in the original language, typically English. I want to keep both, obviously. I don't need any transition or effect, just a simple editor that allows me to remove unwanted sections. I have tried: pitivi - crashes on start LiVES - works for an hour at 100% CPU and can't load the file. dvbcut - says my mpeg file is not a video (and it certainly is!) tragtor - can convert, but not edit. openshot - almost. My video has two sound tracks, and this tool ignores the second track. cinelerra-cv - I can't make head or tails of it. I tell it to load a video file, it does, but then I don't see how to do anything. It doesn't even display the video. I may have to read the manual, but I dislike having to read a manual for a GUI. Still... kdenlive - Well... crashes too often. I can mark the cuts, but it does not display what I'm cutting. And only one sound track. HandBrake - no edit. Avidemux - one sound track only. Kino - abandonware. Lightworks ?? [opensuse] Apache Start Up Problem

Hi All, I had a weird problem today. I noticed that after a reboot of my server, my owncloud instance on my desktop was complaining about an invalid certificate. I tried to 'open owncloud in browser' and was presented with my apache default page. So first thing I tried is restart the apache service. This fixed the problem. However, every time I reboot apache is not loading my configuration correctly and the problem repeats. It appears to be loading the default configuration file fine at boot but ignoring the other files. (including owncloud). But when I manually stop and start the service they load fine. Huh?? Any idea how I can diagnose what is causing this problem? What is the difference between the apache service loading at boot compared to manually starting the service? [opensuse] root in extended partition (42.3)

Leap 423 upgraded from 422. Old drive has been in use probably since 10x. Bios. Generic code is in the MBR. I have 423 / in an extended partition. Grub2 is in 423 /. All was good. I used Yast2-bootloader module to change an option (boot loader password, if it matters). I then exited normally (OK) and yast rewrote/reinstalled the bootloader. Next boot failed at a blinking cursor. I booted with Parted Magic and found that Yast had set the extended partition itself as the boot partition, rather than / which was 2 or 3 partitions deep into the extended. I fixed that and rebooted normally. I went into Yast2-bootloader and Boot Loader Location was still correctly set there as Boot from Root Partition, even though that is not what it apparently wrote to the bootloader. So, my question is, is this expected behaviour? I don't remember this happening in previous releases. Thanks. I have worked out that I can run the following from one user to execute a command as the other (bob). su - bob -c command prompt for password enter password command runs as bob but, how can I run this on one line for use in a script? Hi all, Please help me solve my problem, shortly described in the subject. Today I updated my Tumbleweed (with GNOME) on an ASUS K5001UX laptop. All went fine until reboot. I got an apparent command line login and a mouse cursor in the middler of the screen. The command line did not accept any input, the mouse cursor moves. I suspect this is the fault of the nouveau driver. Can I get back X without reinstalling the whole thing? Thanks Albert

I tried to fix this since I updated to 42.3. Is there a bug with rootmail not working in that version? I do see there is mail in rootmail, I did set correctly to receive rootmail, but I do not receive anything. Seccheck: nothing rkhunter: nothing. Now these two run (or should run) on a daily basis and should give a report via rootmail. Any suggestion on how to receive rootmail with kmail again? Smartctl -x reports from my few other WD disks all seem to have identical Reallocated_Sector_Ct, 200 200 140 Reallocated_Event_Count, 200 200 0 Current_Pending_Sector, 200 200 0 Offline_Uncorrectable 100 253 0 except for 200 173 0 on the bad 320 for current pending. Can anyone suggest what most likely caused the 4 files to be repeatedly uncopyable? Driver error or other error in the Dreambox software maybe? Before the 320 AV and the 2TB AV I had never ever purchased a WD disk, due to miserable experiences with used WD HDs that had come into my possession over the years. Hi, relatively recently, "lazytime" has been added as the default for mounts - from man mount: lazytime Only update times (atime, mtime, ctime) on the in-memory version of the file inode. This mount option significantly reduces writes to the inode table for workloads that perform frequent random writes to preallocated files. The on-disk timestamps are updated only when: - the inode needs to be updated for some change unrelated to file timestamps - the application employs fsync(2), syncfs(2), or sync(2) - an undeleted inode is evicted from memory - more than 24 hours have passed since the i- node was written to disk. I understand that using this option (which is the default) supersedes using "relatime". Hi, I noticed in the graph of disk activity in GKrellM that there was some constant but intermittent activity on /dev/sda. Like this: __|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| It suddenly occurred to me that with GKrellM one can display a graph per partition! So I activated graphs for each one in /dev/sda and found the culprit: /dev/sda7. What do I have there? On my system, all files that do not have an explicit MIME type are listed in Dolphin as Type "Python File (no console)". This includes files with names like: cis.txt xx.repo noExtension The mime type it shows in the Properties->General->FileTypeOptions is text/plain. So that part is okay. But when listing a name for this, "Python File (no console)" is used. After an interesting read about the inner working of xrandr I started reading the manpage. Got the version of my xrandr and got further info about my system. And then I was lost in a swell of info and possibilities. My problem with monitors is following: I am using as my main monitor a Philips 196V3L, 18,5" 13766x768. For movies and such I would like to use my television set with a bigger screen via HDMI. The TV has one HDMI plug which is connected with a box from the TV provider. If I disconnect the tv from the tv box and plug it in on my motherboard I can use HDMI as my second monitor. That is not feasible for daily use. I found myself a HDMI cable with one HDMI connector and on the other end three colored (green, blue and red) video plugs. When I plug this cable into the HDMI plug of the motherboard and the three colored video plugs int the TV set I expected to receive a signal on the TV set. The television set is only showing the input "component" with these three plugs inserted. With xrandr I read HDMI-1 and -2 disconnected. Also DP1 and 2 are not connected. [opensuse] some mp4 cannot be played "decoder profile above limits"

Hi everybody "Suddenly" the mp4-videos from my mobile phone cannot be played anymore, no matter what player I use: it only shows a black screen plus plays the sound, but no image. As for my small tests it only affects the mp4 from my samsung mobile that are larger than 10MB (9.8MB works, 11.2MB does not work, neither larger). But downloaded mp4, avi, etc. work normally even in GB size. I tried to start from commandline, and maybe the messages say something to somebody of you...: vlc 20161005_085414.mp4 VLC media player 2.2.6 Umbrella (revision 2.2.6-0-g1aae78981c) [000055aac07500c8] core libvlc: VLC wird mit dem Standard-Interface ausgeführt. [opensuse] What's the recommended way to setup Bumblebee with the proprietary NVIDIA driver on Tumbleweed?

I've been using the nvidia-bumblebee package from the X11:Bumblebee repository for a while now and it's still on version 375.66. Is any of the info in <https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Bumblebee> out of date? I installed the driver from the official nvidia repository and tried to set it up with Bumblebee like that article suggested I do with Leap on Tumbleweed and I also tried to do it based on <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee>, but I had no luck. I went back to using the nvidia-bumblebee package. [opensuse] Black screen when plugging in VGA connector

Hi all, I have a Thinkpad X200 (Librebooted) that I'm faffing about with. Everything works as it ought, except I get some odd behaviour when I plug in a VGA connector. A moment after it is plugged in, the screen on the laptop goes black, except I can still see (and move) the cursor within the bounds of the laptop screen. The external monitor is also completely black. The cursor flickers a little bit. After I unplug the VGA connector, everything goes back to normal. This only happens when there is an actual monitor on the other end of the cable. Plugging in a loose cable does nothing. I haven't yet tried to connect to a different monitor. [opensuse] Pulseaudio frustration

Hi all. How do I *permanently* disable pulseaudio’s module-rtp-send and module-rtp-recv from loading at login time? I’m running tumbleweed. Every time I login to KDE (5), pulseaudio starts spamming the network with multicast rtp traffic, until module-rtp-send/recv are unloaded. I cannot disable rtp sending/receiving with paprefs (PulseAudio Preferences): NONE of the check-boxes in that app respond except for “Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards). I have uninstalled paprefs and pactl, deleted ~/.pulse and ~/.config/pulse (whilst logged out), logged in and out, reinstalled paprefs/pactl and logged out/in again. Still no dice. My user is a member of the following groups: lp, wheel, cdrom, users (this is the primary group for all users on my system), vboxusers, video,audio,pulse- access. Some of these may not be necessary. Yes, I’ve tried logged on as a different user - the only difference is that all the checkboxes that are checked when logged in as me are unchecked when logged in as the other user, but still none can be changed! Oh, yes - KDE is using the phonon-gstreamer backend, if that is relevant at all. The module-load lines for module-rtp-send/recv are commented out in /etc/ pulse/default.pa, so they’re not being loaded from there. I cannot find any other pulse configuration files that would be forcing the settings (but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist). Any clues on how to beat this recalcitrant beast into submission gratefully received. I've also received no system mail but that's of no consequence to me but once upon a time I used to be irritated by system mail on the command line and had thunderbird set up to receive it. Since 42.1 I've never had any system mail, I can't even remember how to delete the messages. I've never touched /etc/aliases but something does because at the end it states "You have mail in /var/spool/mail/davepl" Apart from this reference there isn't any other reference to davepl and it seems that root is set up to receive from all system users. Hi All, Probably not the right place to ask but one of you may know the answer. I am learning C++ and my program uses system('program --arg1 --arg2'); to run a proprietary program. My question is how can I make this program a dependency so that it has to be installed before my program? I have noticed that ldd shows that some dependencies have already been added as dependencies to the binary once it is compiled. Well, just did the install, and overall, it went rather well. I was doing a fresh install, retaining /home over top of 42.1. One gripe, on which my notes from the 42.1 install saved me another hour of headache: If you're going to set python to version 2.7.13 (fine by me), you should follow the principle of least surprise and install python-pip (along with the obvious easy_install dependency) and set etc-alternatives to use that pip (version 7.1.2). Other than that, so far so good guys, and thanks. Do you found these two files in your HOME directory or in system directories? I found the two files application-x-wine-extension-vbs.xml and x-wine-extension-vbs.xml in my HOME directory. Personally I edited the file type x-wine-extension-vbs within the KDE settings tool systemsettings5 and deleted the *.vbs extension and the list of opening programs. As an alternative you can remove the two files in your HOME directory. If the files are stored in system's directories, removing them may not help, because updates with restore them. In this case you probably have to copy it to a specified location in your HOME directory and edit them. But the location is highly dependent on your system and I don't know the correct location. The error message "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." comes from a browser or something similar. Please edit the files in a text edit. As the name *wine* says, Wine has probably created the files together with the MS Office installer. Hi, I'm going to migrate my laptop rotating hard disk (500 GB) to an SSD. I hope to give new life to it this way. The machine is double boot Windows 10 / Leap 42.2, so I'm going to do image replication (dd_rescue), because otherwise Windows will not boot. So identical partition table. Caveats you can think of?
