[opensuse] desktop apps are looking very odd and color less.

Hi, I am not able to find out, any way to configure my desktop application window normal colorful as they look in other OS like Ubuntu, Mac etc. For me any app siderbar, upper bar all are white, and it looks very odd to me. All, I know for most opensuse packages, the version is set for a release at some point during development and then only patches are provided. But for some, it seems like would makes sense to provide version updates along the way. Regarding systemd, what is interesting is that 210 is the latest version in any of the unstable repos (according to software.opensuse.org) With 215 you get: systemctl: -M --machine=CONTAINER Operate on local container -r --recursive Show unit list of host and local containers --reverse Show reverse dependencies with 'list-dependencies' --job-mode=MODE Specify how to deal with already queued jobs, when queueing a new job --show-types When showing sockets, explicitly show their type --preset-mode= Specifies whether fully apply presets, or only enable, or only disable --root=PATH Enable unit files in the specified root directory --plain Print unit dependencies as a list instead of a tree commands: list-timers [PATTERN...] List loaded timers ordered by next elapse cat PATTERN... Wow! This is a real beautiful, fast and full featured Desktop Environment which I do not understand why it is not being installed as default or among the default ones in OpenSUSE. [opensuse] quicktime controlbar size

Hello, I'm debugging a video gallery plugin and for now the quicktime part (do not ask me to use html5, it's not the problem, thanks) my present (minor) problem is that the control bar official (apple) height is 16 pixel, and this size have to be set hard in the windows size. this is nice for IE8 or Firefox in Windows. But the gecko-mediaplayer quicktime plugin for firefox uses a much higher control bar (looks like it have 38 pixels high). presently I simply use the max height and leave some blank around in windows, but this prevent me from using a border (in which case the blank is visible) the excess part of the control is used to write text. Do you know any simple way to parameter a 16 pix size control, from the html page? Don't forget I'm not responsible of the client, I only create the web page through php. [opensuse] Is there a new cli webpin in 13.1 - or a slick curl command -- or something that will work?

All, As we lament *webpin* that passed into oblivion around 11.3, I though I would check to see if there is a new command line replacement for it? If not, does anybody have a slick workaround using curl or the like? Here is a bad hack example for *mkisofs* (after zypper refused to install several packages because *mkisofs* "wasn't" installed [it was already installed ... provided by cdrkit-cdrtools-compat]) curl "https://software.opensuse.org/package/mkisofs?search_term=mkisofs" | \ grep "repositories\|package" | \ sed -e 's/^.*="//' -e 's/">.*$//' -e 's/%3A/:/g' If anybody has any other suggestion for a quick command-line search, I welcome you ideas. A command line tool that can query all repositories (whether subscribed or not) to locate a needed file/rpm is a "must-have" feature. zypper se -s only works for subscribed repos, so I am looking for a solution that works regardless of subscription. -- David C. [opensuse] 13.1 VirtualBox, extension pack solves USB issues, GuestAdditions separate download?

All, After earlier discussion about using the download.virtualbox.org version for 12.3 or using the version found in the 13.1 virtualbox repo, I decided on trying the 13.1 repo. After install, I attempted to start the VM's that were running with USB and I get a error telling me that the VM cannot be started unless USB support is disabled... Here is a screenshot of the error: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/openSuSE/131/vbox-usb.jpg So I downloaded the extension pack from download.virtualbox.org and install it via: VBoxManage extpack install \ --replace Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.12-93733.vbox-extpack Solved. The VM's launch fine. However, next, I couldn't find the GuestAdditions ISO to install with the (Host + D) menu entry. Checking the virtualbox rpm -- it's not there. So back to download.virtualbox.org, download the VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.12.iso and install. This being the first time using the openSuSE rpm instead of the one from virtualbox raises the following question, just what does using the openSuSE rpm provide compared to installing directly from virtualbox? I understand that licensing prevents direct inclusion of the extension pack, but I thought the guest additions were normally included? I guess it you don't want the guest additions, the opensuse rpm provides a smaller download, but if you still have to go to virtualbox.org for the extension pack, why not just use the 12.3 rpm there? It is simple enough to use the opensuse rpm and then add the extension pack and guest additions, but are there any other issues that way into using one verses the other? Any problems doing it the way I did it? All seems to be running fine so from what I can tell it is an either/or proposition, just choose either the opensuse package + ext pack + guest additions, or choose the virtualbox.org package + ext pack and you will end up with the same thing. [opensuse] 13.1 - 'hostname' returns fqdn instead of just hostname - install put fqdn in HOSTNAME?

Brain-trust, Here is a curiosity in 13.1. After install, the hostname command returned the fully qualified domain name instead of properly returning the hostname alone. Eg: $ hostname alchemy.3111skyline.com $ hostname -f alchemy.3111skyline.com This caused problems in some application that are expecting only the hostname part. Picking through the usual list of suspects, it turned out that /etc/HOSTNAME was the guilty party. It contained: # cat HOSTNAME alchemy.3111skyline.com That was odd, in the past, /etc/HOSTNAME generally included only the hostname part and not the dnsdomainname as well. Fixing /etc/HOSTNAME fixed the problem. Has anyone else noticed this? If this can be confirmed, I'll file the bug report, but there is also the possibility I entered the full hostname during install when it called for only the hostname part. I guess in that instance I should still file a bug report because the installer should be smart enough to validate the input. What says the list? -- David C. Hello, I'm completely new to SVN, and the documentation is not that clear on some subjects. specifically on svn commit to a password protected svn (I have an account but I'm not the administrator). Documentation say that once the first time passwd given it wont be asked again. seems to be so on the server. but on the openSUSE 13.1 client, when I type the "svn commit <RC>" command in a terminal, I have a *graphical* prompt twice, once for a passwd, the other for a passphrase. [opensuse] 13.1 installation issue?

I typically install new versions several times trying out various programs/features/settings in both real and virtual systems. I've noticed that starting with the 13.1 each install has slightly different results for some items (locations of a very few programs, clock settings. languages). None of the differences seem to change the operation of the system. Might this have something to do with changing to systemd or possibly a race condition during installation with a quad core system? I've previously used sysvinit only. Or maybe these old eyes are playing tricks on me! I also installed flash player from the 13.1 repos. Same. How do I get flash with Chromium? [opensuse] 13.1 New Install Summary - Good Job Dev Team!

All, In my move from 11.4 to 13.1 on my Toshiba laptop, my first impression of 13.1 is that it is a good first step towards systemd implementation for openSuSE. It took a number of hours and the cumulative brain-trust of the opensuse list to iron out, but 13.1 is working great and Ilya has done a fantastic job preparing kde3 for 13.1. The boot time for 13.1 is great, 17 seconds to the desktop. I've put a detailed plot of the boot process for the laptop up at for those interested: [450k] http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/suse/alchemy_13.1-bootplot.jpg This bootplot was created with systemd-analyze which provides some pretty spectacular features: # systemd-analyze plot > cnf/alchemy/bootplot.svg The 13.1 install was not bad considering the steps taken in the move to systemd. This install was done with the net-install CD with initial desktop as LXDE, traditional root account, no auto-login, and auto-configure turned off. The installer worked fine, the only glitch was the installer failing to fill the printer select dialog during printer configuration -- until the hplip package was installed. The only shortcoming of the installer is that it only allows addition of the update/non-oss repositories instead of allowing any repository to be added. I would like to see it allow addition of any repository at install time. In my case that led to choosing LXDE as an temp install desktop before adding the KDE3 repository and installing the final desktop. The need to use a temporary desktop led to the system being configured to start many unwanted/unneeded processes. Specifically the install filled the /etc/xdg/autostart directory with: at-spi-dbus-bus.desktop gmixer-trayicon.desktop gnome-keyring-gpg.desktop gnome-keyring-pkcs11.desktop gnome-keyring-secrets.desktop gnome-keyring-ssh.desktop gnome-settings-daemon.desktop gsynaptics-init.desktop hplip-systray.desktop nautilus-autostart.desktop nm-applet.desktop parcellite-startup.desktop polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop print-applet.desktop tracker-miner-fs.desktop tracker-store.desktop user-dirs-update-gtk.desktop xfce4-power-manager.desktop Of those, the only one needed (useful) in kde is gnome-settings-daemon.desktop to coordinate kde/gtk themes. I suspect those claiming no reduction in boot-time under 13.1 probably have a number of unneeded processes being started in this manner. Simply moving all the unneeded .desktop files out of autostart dramatically reduced startup time (and eliminated a mouse y-axis conflict caused by gsynaptics-init). The remaining issues with the 13.1 install surrounded having to turn off a lot of unnecessary 'optional' stuff that is now the 'default'. This included the annoying bash_command_not_found, the /etc/profile.d coloration of grep, etc. Those are relatively simple, but take a lot of wasted time to track down and turn off. My only comment would be that users should turn 'options' on if wanted, not have to turn 'options' off that are unwanted. The biggest time waste was not opensuse related, but came from the forced update to firefox 30 and it's changed interface that caused (and continues to cause) untold problems with toolbar layout, plugins, etc... Yet another example of a gee-whiz new interface that doesn't work with prior plugins, does little or nothing to improve actual browsing or page rendering, but takes a hell of a lot of time to sort out. There was only one bug report filed regarding 13.1 itself. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=887629 For some reason the screen backlight control is broken for this laptop. It has worked in every OS and openSuSE version since 11.0, but for some reason just doesn't in 13.1. Again, small potatoes, it will get fixed. On balance, the 13.1 install was no more difficult than any prior openSuSE install. The resulting system boots fast and so far has been rock stable. All 11.4 kde settings/data transfered to 13.1 just fine (I did blow up kicker, but that was easily fixed). Except for the firefox toolbar issue, all firefox and thunderbird data transfered fine and is working as expected. On balance cudos to the development team. -- David C. All, I have a friend that is slowly going blind. She can read for 15 or 20 minutes at a time currently, but then the headaches, etc. set in. She needs a way to read long PDFs in particular. She currently uses a Mac as her primary PC and she has an iPad I believe. Without spending thousands of dollars, what is the best "english" text to speech reader out there? Once I know the app I'll look into what platforms it is on. Note that at least for now she doesn't need it to handle reading the application controls, just the content of PDFs. She can navigate the controls well enough, it is sustained reading that is a problem. [opensuse] keepassx 2.0alpha import does work, but 2.0alpha UI is a bit awkward.

All, I was wrong. You can import keepass1 databases into keepass2. To do this you have to cancel the password/keyfile dialog that is automatically displayed and then choose import from the file menu. The import worked fine, but the user interface in 2.0 is really cluttered compared to 0.4.3. The biggest change is that what was a simple clean input dialog in keepassx 0.4.3 is now 4+ separate dialogs, tabbed on the left, much of which is unrelated to basic use. Yes you can see history and some extra information -- but none of it relevant to the "store credential/show credential" basic keepassx purpose. Hopefully the interface is slimmed down before 2.0alpha is final and it will move back toward the cleaner 0.4.3 interface before release. All of the new new information collected is fine, but should be menu entries that can be accessed if needed/wanted, but should not be part of the default information shown when an entry is opened. Sure more information is better, but there is no replacement for a consistent clean interface. (The appendix and bibliography doesn't belong on the front page :) -- David C. All, When installing fonts, many people use the fetchmsttfonts package to load the public ms truetype fonts. That's fine, the only problem being is that every time the fetchmsttfonts is rebuilt (the fonts don't change, only the package version changes) the fetchmsttfonts package is downloaded again and updated. To prevent this from happening, simply install the fetchmsttfonts package once, then make a copy of /usr/share/fonts/truetype, remove the package, then copy the fonts back to /usr/share/fonts/truetype and run fonts-config. Most may not care, but if I can avoid muli-meg downloads during each `zypper up` I'm all for it (not to mention -- there are newer versions of the fonts, that if installed, are overwritten with each zypper up) So for those who want to avoid the repeated update of the font package, the following is a quick outline of the process: # zypper in fetchmsttfonts # cp -a /usr/share/fonts/truetype /tmp # rpm -e fetchmsttfonts # cp -ua /tmp/truetype /usr/share/fonts # fonts-config -f -v # creates fonts.scale & fonts.dir & calls fc-cache # rm -r /tmp/truetype ...done! Is there a SUSE recommended way to configure Tomcat for multiple instances, that is more than one CATALINA_BASE? I'd like to use the Tomcat rpm that's included in the distribution. I need this on SLES 11, so the initscripts are classic sysv. I should be able to start/stop the instances individually. Hi all. I note that the latest version of cups in any of the official repositories is version 1.5.4, but the latest version available from cups.org is 1.7.4. According to the cups.org release notes, 1.7.4 includes many fixes including at least one security related fix. Is anyone working on packaging 1.7.4 for openSuSE? I would do it myself via the build service but every time I've tried to do that has ended in abject failure. I obviously have no idea what I'm doing there... Hi - I am running an OpenSuSE 13.1 x64 system as a firewall/router/server and have a number of devices on my internal network, such as routers, access points, iBoot remote power control, UPS etc., all of which serve up a web page interface for control over said device. I would like to be able to access these web services from the internet (or from our intranet using our domain name). To accomplish this I am trying to set up SuSEFirewall to route various ports on my gateway/firewall to these internal devices, but so far no joy in getting this to work from both my internal network (accessing via our outside static internet IP address, or from an external system somewhere out yonder on the internet. Here is an example of the relevant settings for one such device, from SuSEFirewall2 (with sensitive IP addresses removed) that I think are properly configured - FW_DEV_EXT="enp4s0" FW_DEV_INT="enp3s0" FW_DEV_DMZ="" FW_ROUTE="yes" FW_MASQUERADE="yes" FW_MASQ_DEV="zone:ext zone:int" FW_PROTECT_FROM_INT="no" FW_SERVICES_EXT_TCP="8081" FW_CONFIGURATIONS_EXT="apache2 bind vsftpd" FW_SERVICES_INT_TCP="" FW_FORWARD="" FW_FORWARD_MASQ="0/0,192.168.1.254,tcp,8081,80,<ISP provided static IP address not shown> 192.168.1.0/24,192.168.1.254,tcp,8081,80,192.168.1.10" I believe I am configuring FW_FORWARD_MASQ to take anything directed to our ISP provided static IP address on port 8081, coming from the internet and redirect it to 192.168.1.254 port 80. AND I believe I have configured it to take anything coming from our internal intranet that was sent to our gateway system at 192.168.1.10 port 8081 and redirect it to 192.168.1.254 port 80. The network itself is configured correctly, ifconfig shows me everything is correct as far as IP address assignments to the two NIC cards are concerned. and yet when I try to access the device I get no joy when using - <ISP provided static IP address>:8081 I expect this to be routed to 192.168.1.254:80 At the moment I am only trying to get one device working, but plan to use the range of ports from 8082-8089 to access other devices that I mentioned above. I have tried a number of combinations of things, without success and done a lot of internet research. Not sure how to proceed or debug this, and I am not very familiar with iptables so if you need me to go there, be gentle and think of me as a beginner! One additional item of note: I am running a web server on the gateway/firewall system as well, which listens on port 80. It does work OK... Ideas anyone? Thanks in advance... [opensuse] Firefox 30, noscript control stuck on bookmarks toolbar?? - how to move?

All, Wolfgang, I have been fighting with Firefox since my 13.1 install a day or so ago just to get the toolbar configuration usable. Somehow, all icons are now locked and cannot be moved. Worse, somehow the noscript icon is stuck on the bookmark toolbar (I never even have that active, usually tuned off). Here is a screenshot: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/moz/noscript_on_bookmarks_bar.jpg Now when I try to "Customize" the toolbars and use "Move to Menu" on noscript, I don't get the "Move to Menu" context menu, all I get is the normal noscript menu. Further, on first launch of FF 30, all my add-ons were crammed in the address bar (what a mess). However, I could rearrange them. Now, nothing moves at all. I cannot rearrange anything. Also, when I have the add-ons in the green config box and I say "Move to Toolbar" it is a complete dice-roll where they end up. How do you actually configure FF 30 toolbar? What is the trick?
