Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. [opensuse] What is the "official" way to mount floppy in openSUSE 12.x?

Hello: The subject says the question. [In pre 12 suse versions I had a /media/floppy directory where the floppy could be mounted at (by using the floppy icon on KDE3's desktop). In 12.x there is no such directory, and if created it will be removed at next boot, as I know correctly. Of course I could make a floppy dir under / or somewhere else, but I'd prefer its location to be in /media, since floppy is a media. Why should it be then outside of media dir?] What is the official way of mounting floppy in 12.x.? I have openSUSE 12.1 with KDE3 currently. [opensuse] opensuse12.3 - cannot make ext drive available to all users

We recently upgraded our office desktop to opensuse 12.3, and have run into a problem with external drives. Our office desktop is used by several people during the day; each user has her/his own account, and users switch between them with the usual ctrl+alt+Fn combination. Most of our data is stored on an external drive. The first user plugs it in, and the last user of the day ejects it and stores it away securely. At least, that's what used to happen with opensuse 12.2. Since moving to 12.3, we find we can't do that. The first user has sole use of the drive in /var/run/media/<username1>, and other users have no access, which means they cannot access or update our data. Is there any (fairly straightforward) way we can restore the previous behaviour, and allow multiple users to access the external drive? [opensuse] Missing of a better power management for laptop

Hello OpenSuSers, IMHO, we are missing an acoustic alarm as well as a really working hibernate or suspend function in 12.3. It is very annoying being sudden logged out by the system powering down without the possibility to be warned in advance (by acoustic alarm) or to restart exactly from the point wherein you have been logged off by critical battery level. So far I'm experiencing these issues in my opensuse 12.3. Sorry to have to admit thhat ones again Windows appears to be more versatile on this matter. By the way, if you set the cmos clock to "local", openSUSE will refuse to do the yearly summer/winter change, and other adjustments to the cmos clock (aka bios clock, aka "hardware clock). On the other hand, on windows 7/8 (and vista, I think) it is possible to tell Windows to use the cmos clock as UTC instead of local. This is what I use and since them, I have no problems. But even if you do any of those solutions, the /etc/adjtime file is already corrupted (if you have the hours shift problem on boot). Hey everyone! Just had a quick question - does anyone know if it's possible to query dmraid status via phpsysinfo? I know they have a plugin for mdraid, but didn't see any way to do it (tried to google it a number of different ways with no results.) I'd post to the forums on sourceforge, but apparently they're having issues because I keep getting HTTP 500 errors. [opensuse] Amarok muting on notifications

Does anyone know how to stop music from muting in Amarok when notifications are displayed? Its very irritating that every time someone on Skype signs in or I delete a file that my music stops. [opensuse] Restore session no longer works - Seamonkey 2.20

Seamonkey was recently upgraded. Since then "Restore Session" no longer works. Retore Session is normally used after Seamonkey was abnormally shut down and restores all the web pages that were previously open. Now, only a single window opens and previous sessions cannot be restored. A recent version of Firefox does not exhibit this problem. Anyone know of a fix for this? [opensuse] Dual /multiboot openSUSE

I am running 12 3 64 bit. I am using Grub legacy installed in the root partition. I am thinking of adding Linux Mint in dual boot mode. I have a spare partition which I keep for installing other Os's which I usually use to test new versions of openSUSE. It is some time since I tried that with an non SUSE os. Are there any gotchas I should look for doing this with Linux Mint ? Where should I tell it to put its bootloader so that openSUSE will see it ? Anything else I should worry about ? [opensuse] Google Earth - invalid HTTP request

I have Google Earth installed on two computers. On both, whenever I try to run a search, I get an error message "invalid HTTP request. I do not see this problem on Windows. I'm running version 6.0.3.2197-0, which is the latest, on openSUSE 12.3. This is a fairly recent problem, as it has work properly in the past. [opensuse] remote xfce4 through ssh

Hello, It's a long time I was out of openSUSE bussiness, but I hope to be able to come back, at least a bit :-) I'm setting up a new hosted server with openSUSE 13.3 and I uodate my own doc here: http://dodin.org/wiki/index.php?n=Doc.OpenSUSE-small-ThirdEdition every time I build a new one I have more power (for this one I7 processor, 24Gb ram!) and try do do some better config. Just now I try to have an xfce remote session. I could use VNC or freenix, but I had in the past problems with this (I have to run VirtualBox on the server and too many virtualization layers do not fit well), so I would like now to use simpler way, that is X remote. I connect to the server with "ssh -X -C root(a)xxxx.info". [opensuse] recover an encrypted home from a previous install

I have a spare user account on one machine which I later decided to encrypt using the option in YaST's User and Group Management. I simply selected 'Use Encrypted Home Directory', and allotted it 2000MB. When upgrading to 12.3, I did so by wiping the root partition and keeping /home intact. When I first logged into this spare account in 12.3, I thought things were as usual, then I noticed program settings were reset to defaults, even though some other system settings and old files were visible. I realised I'd not reinstated the encrypted home, and what I was seeing was just the remnants of early files and settings I'd configured before the encryption. Just to complicate things, whilst still on 12.2 I'd changed the 'spare' user ID from 1001 to 1010 and run a couple of commands to update all files found on the system (and in /etc/passwd). Now I'd like to get back into that encrypted volume since it holds a few files I cannot otherwise retrieve. How can I do it? The files 'spare.img' and 'spare.key' still exist, but if I simply re-checked the encryption box in YaST would it not try and create a new volume with a different key, or would it merely read the original one? I believe these two files are under user ID 1010 but the contents would I assume still remain as 1001, which might make it tricky. I am in the process of setting up a new machine and so I could create a user account called 'spare' with user ID 1001, then copy the .img and .key files over and update them to 1001. I did find converting to kmail2 is now fairly easy. I had kdepim3 kmail convert all mbox folders to maildir. I then moved the old dir to somewhere safe. After starting with a fresh kmail2, I imported the old folders. The only downside with this approach to conversion is that after importing all my folders I had to manually shift-click bunches of folders and mark all contents as read. I don't want desktop nepomuk desktop indexing, I think this is why I'm not getting along with kmail2. I have a bug that is so odd, I have no idea who to blame, or where to file the bug report: Netshell: If I sleep my laptop (suspend to ram, not to disk) and awaken it some time later, dragging a window around is sluggish, the window will lag far behind the cursor. This will persist for as long as I care to wait. If I press Ctrl+P (the shortcut to toggel desktop effects off, wait just about 10 seconds (you can tell when the change has taken effect by watching the KDE taskbar), the press Ctrl+P again to turn the bling back on, everything is back to normal and the speed and responsiveness is virtually indistinguishable with effects on vs off. Alternative is "remote", which means sending to port 514.udp of a machine in the network. [opensuse] Passport USB drive now failing to mount reliably on openSuSE12.3x64 system.

Hi - I am running openSuSE12.3x64 and am encountering a problem that is unique to this machine. I have a USB Western Digital Passport drive and when I connect it, the drive is no longer working properly. I mostly have PortableApps and jpg images on it. It often connects initially and I can use Dolphin to browse files and folders, but always as soon as I try to use Gwenview to view an image it immediately disconnects/unmounts the drive. It often disconnects/unmounts the drive immediately after it is mounted also, but not always. Gwenview does cause it to disconnect/unmount the drive every time I try to use it. I am not having troubles with other USB devices (mouse, keyboard) connected via USB to this system (even on the same USB port) and the Passport drive works fine on another openSuSE12.2 system as well as Windoz systems. [opensuse] Hamachi on openSuSE 12.x - working!

Hi everyone, A while back someone posted about needing help getting Hamachi to work on oS 12.x. I've spent a fair bit of time working on it the last two days, and finally got it working. Ultimately, I had to find a different version of the Hamachi client - the current version on the website simply wouldn't work, even on older versions of oS. It was really hard finding an old version of the client though (just found links mostly,) but I finally found one here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&ved… Tested, and it seems to work fine on oS 12.2 x64 and oS 12.1 i586, and allows connections from the current version Windows 7 client as well. I'm assuming it'll work on 12.3 as well, as the errors I was getting on 12.3 were identical to the ones on 12.1 and 12.2, but I haven't tested it just yet. However, it's really old (version 2.0.1.13.) I posted this in the forums, but the forums seem to be down now and I am hoping that someone may be able to help quickly before I head off to work today. I hope I am not breaking protocol by doing this, but here goes. I enabled ddclient, to update my ddns on freedns.afraid.org. I have to use ddclient or some other application on my pc and cannot use ddns on my router, because my router's built in ddns is pre-set to dynDNS.org or TZO, and it doesn't allow any other hosting. I was in a konsole later and it said I had new system mail, so I opened it up. However, when I did look at my my IP address on my router, which did change, my subdomain that I chose on freedns had also updated correctly. So it tells me it is not updating, but apparently it is? Or is it telling me something else? In any case, some googling pointed that this could be an error in a perl library for SSL. So just to check I tried setting the ssl=no parameter in /etc/ddclient.conf, but I am still getting the error. So I set it back to ssl=yes. So I don't know if this has anything to do with SSL. Why would a hosting service like dynDNS or freedns.afraid.org block someone if their pc had some kind of internal error when it went to update the ip on their subdomain? What I am really wondering on that is if I should disable this service altogether when I am not using it, so as not to cause problems for the hosting company. I don't know enough about how this works to know the answers to that. [opensuse] (OT) repair mysql from frm: Can't open table

Hello, Somehow my backup only backuped the frm files for some databases. So I try to recreate at least the table structures from the frm files. I enter mysql from commandline, and USE the appropriate database. I created empty MYD and MYI files for the table, gave them -rw-rw---- for user and group mysql. But when I type repair table adrs USE_FRM; I get "Can't open table". Unfortunately I cannot search google, because google doesn't respect my search entry, although I added +'Can't open table' I get thousands of results for "can't" that google loves, but not for "can't open table" that would help me ... SO please forgive that I ask this off-topic here... Can anybody help me? Thanks! It seems more sensible to do this with YaST if possible. [opensuse] KDE 4.11/12.3 Problem with KDE Services

Hi ! I have updated KDE 4.10 to 4.11 / OpenSuSE 12.3 on Lenovo ThinkPad, and got these problems: 1) KDE Power management doesn't work anymore (powerdevil can't be started). 2) Keyboard daemon can't start. Before update to 4.11 everything worked fine. systemctl status upower.service returns OK. I have updated 4.11 again with latest patches 10 minutes ago. KDE Services 4.11 were updated, but nothing have been fixed, problem with these services persist. Anyone have any clue what went wrong? Thanks in advance. Ok, I must have sipped to long at the trough of the dumb juice... An email arrives in my inbox in Kmail. I click on reply And it sets up the reply to ME. Not the sender. (keyboard speed key R, or button at top, or right-click and select Reply) There is another option to replay to the Author. (shift A for godsake...) Kmail authors couldn't be this dumb, so it must be something I set up by mistake. Where is the control that sets this? I'd like it to index ebooks, (mostly epub), but it refuses to do so. Just a heads up of people using Kontact or Kmail 4.10 or 4.11: If you see an akonadi_imap_resoruce process start to consume 30 to 50% sustained cpu, you are probably DOSing the Imap server. Its bad enough when its your own imap server, but people are getting calls from their ISP about this and getting banned. Many bug reports in bugs.kde.org, but the all seem to track back to this one: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316840 as the root of the problem. [opensuse] Problem with USB headset microphone volume

SUSE 12.2 Plantronics Audio 478 USB Headset KDE Volume Control Programs - pavucontrol - kmix HP G72 Laptop I can't seem to get any volume out of my headset microphone. If I max the volume on either control program, I can hear if I scratch my fingernail on the mic, or if I stick the microphone in my mouth and yell, I get a very low volume, highly distorted sound through the headset. The sound level bars pavucontrol show high responsiveness to sound, but it doesn't come through the headset. Skype doesn't work, including the test site. No programs seem to work for recording or hearing microphone input. A fairly exhaustive search online shows this seems to be, and has been, a pretty common problem for some time, over multiple distro's, and versions. There aren't a whole lot of suggested fixes, and the most common one is to run pavucontrol, which certainly gives me more options than kmix. In fact, when I started with only kmix, I couldn't see any input sources until I installed pavucontrol, which then caused the microphone to be recognized on both programs. I need this because I am disabled, but volunteer time and expertise to a couple of highly visible and important state task forces that report to the Secretary of Health Services and I serve, as a volunteer on the board of directors of a very large and influential advocacy agency serving others with the same disability as I deal with. It's not important you know that, except that I am not paid and am trying to make a difference, and can't afford to acquire and dispose of technologies that may or may not work, and from what I read online anyway, this is a pretty common problem. I also do NOT want to be forced into the Windows world, and in fact, I am trying to advocate for others in my situation to use Linux where I would help them (and I have been supporting Linux users for a very long time. I just run into new things every so often that I need help with). This is all to say this is important to more people than me, and any help is doing work for the public good. Enough said. [opensuse] Wireless N router? (possibly offtopic)

All, I have a G router that works fairly well, but I just bought a Mac Mini and when I situate where I want it (next to an existing wlan desktop and a mx922 printer), the connection is not stable. The Mac Mini claims N support, so I bought a new Asus N750 router for $130. The G router was half that much several years ago. I find that the N router is not talking okay to the N750 router, but not to my Canon MX922 printer which is also wireless (wireless 802.11b/g or n capability required in my router per the spec sheet). The mx922 connects, but it won's stay connected. I have 2 options I think, but no idea which is best: 1) Take the N750 router back and get a N900 router instead, They claim the N900 has greater range. 2) Get a wlan extender for the N750 Is there any consensus out there for what I should do? LXDE clients joined to a DC running samba with a separate file server running smbd. All 12.3 Hi I'm trying to debug slow LXDE clients. One thing we've noticed is that the file server is flooded with smbd errors looking for files which don't exist e.g.: [2013/08/24 22:59:33.060232, 3] ../source3/smbd/trans2.c:5399(call_trans2qfilepathinfo) call_trans2qfilepathinfo: SMB_VFS_LSTAT of lynn2/.kde failed (No such file or directory) There are countless other file failures. These continue to be sent until I log out. If I log into the same account with KDE, win xp or win7 , the messages disappear and the file server reverts to inactivity after the initial burst of getting either my home folder or my windows profile. If I log into LXDE on a client which does not have KDE, the messages are still present. Following log.smbd and top is scary with the latter around 0.7% per client. That's unacceptable load in a domain. We've (almost) eliminated the DC as it runs its own version of smbd. The file server is a bare bones install and no one is logged in anyway. A Lubuntu client also behaves as expected. 1, Why is LXDE sending constant requests for files that don't exist? 2. What is the equivalent to log.smbd if I log in locally to a client? How do I see what files are being requested? (I need to totally eliminates cifs from this). If you don't understand cron jobs, then you shouldn't be messing with them anyway, regardless of what interface you work through. The current way is the best way, because those who don't know what they're looking at will shy away from messing with crontab and related files. Dumbing-down crucial administration tasks is NOT a win -- because it makes it easy for the under-informed to fool themselves into thinking they know what they're doing. It's purely for ease of administration as I am the only one at my place of work who understands crontab. If there was a nice YaST plugin that just showed when the tasks run and what they run then my colleagues can troubleshoot in my absence. Hi all, I am trying to set up user quotas for my ftp server so I can control how much space each ftp user gets. I followed the manual* and went to partitioner and checked 'Enable Quota' on the partition containing the home directories I then performed a reboot and went to YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management > Users selected a user and clicked Edit I then went to the plugin tab and tried to launch 'Manage Disk Quota' but receive the error 'Quota is not enabled on your system. Enable quota support in the partition settings module.' I have not found any other instructions in the OpenSUSE manual and I have tried with OpenSUSE 12.2 and 12.3 both manuals* have identical information on quotas. So far my SUSE experience has been hindered by poor documentation, most of the setup I have had to guess with trial and error (thank goodness for VM snapshots :D). Please can anyone advise how to configure quotas? *OpenSUSE Startup Manual Chapter 10.3 page 134 Some info on my system: The users home directories are in /srv/ftp/users (the reason for this is that the FTP server does not support ACLs and the FTP server does not work when i set to the home directory as I have to set owner to FTP instead of the user, therefore they cannot access their files. What is going on with latest updates to 12.3? Suddenly I am having a heck of a time logging into 12.3 because the grub menu suddenly decided not to recognise that I have 12.3 installed on /dev/sda5 and this all came about because I upgraded to the latest stable kernel and had to run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. When I did try to run grub2-mkconfig a few days ago I got an error message which I didn't pay attention to and since then I have had to use my 12.2 installation because 12.2 is not accessible. (It's only now that I have found the time to attend to this problem as other personal affairs have been taking up my time.) To cut a long story short I finally (using smoke and mirrors) WAS able to boot into 12.3 a few minutes ago and when I went to run grub2-mkconfig I got this error message: linux-67gf:~ # mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 /mnt/btldr linux-67gf:~ # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg /usr/bin/grub2-editenv: error: cannot open `/boot/grub2/grubenv.new': No such file or directory. /usr/sbin/grub2-mkconfig: line 253: /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.new: No such file or directory What the heck is this all about? I looked in /boot/grub2 and there IS a file called grubenv but not grubenv.new. What is needed to get out of this pit, please? BTW, I login into 12.2 and do grub2-mkconfig etc and this process recognises my 12.3 installation on sda5 but when the grub menu is displayed 12.3 is MISSING. I need to get this grub2-mkconfig working because I need to pick-up the new installation of Windows 7 Pro (and NO it is not installed on the same drive - it's installed on a partition on /dev/sdb and booting into 12.2 I can access Win 7). Hi all, I was wondering if it is possible to change where mariadb ad phpmyadmin saves its data to my second partition. the phpmyadmin files are already on the separate partition but I was unsure if it saved any data elsewhere that would be required to restore it? I have configured my openSUSE 11.4 firewall with a VLAN interface and a different subnet from my main one. I have configured the DHCP server with the new address range, but for some reason I still get the main subnet addresses assigned instead. I don't see any way to say which interface a DHCP range applies to. Can anyone please provide an answer or suggest some doc. to read (but NOT a manual :-( ) which would provide me with the answer. Searching the web has not really provided an answer. The problem is with grub2. To begin: I have 2 HDDs - sda and sdb - both sitting in mobile racks. I have the following systems installed on these 2 drives: sda3 openSUSE 12.2 sda5 opensuse 12.3 sda6 Tumbleweed (12.3) sda7 Ubuntu 13.04 sda8 openSUSE 13.1 Milestone #4 sdb1 Windows #7 In addition I have a separate bootloader which contained/contains grub.cfg which will boot (or did boot) all and any of the above. This bootloader is sitting in sda1 and I mount it manually in /mnt/btldr when required. I orginally installed 12.2 on sda3 and then installed Windows on sdb1 (to do this Win installation I removed sda from the box and Windows was able to install its bootloader in the MBR for sdb). After this was done I mounted sda1 - the btldr partition - and ran: grub2-install --root-directory=/mnt/btldr /dev/sda followed by (2) grub2-mkconfig -o /mnt/btldr/boot/grub2/grub.cfg to populate the grub.cfg in the /btldr/boot/grub2/. This was working fine for months even after I added 12.3, Tumbleweed, Ubuntu, and Milestone 1, 2, and 3. However, something went dodgy and now if I boot into 12.2 and run (2) above oS 12.3 on sda5 is not recognised in the btldr; yet running grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg in 12.2 does see sda5 - but is left out in btldr. The "reverse" happens if I manage (using smoke and mirrors) to boot into 12.3 and then 12.2 (on sda3) is omitted from btldr when I run (2). I have used the Ubuntu's Boot Rescue Disk and while the first time I used it (a couple of weeks ago) it recognised all of the systems but when I ran it again earlier tonight it did not recognise 12.3 on sda5. I really wish I knew what to do to get back to where I was before this dodgy-thing struck and therefore be able to boot into all of the systems I have currently installed. So if anyone can throw some light on how to overcome this dilemma please advise me. (The inability to create the correct grub menu by running grub2-mkconfig -o /mnt/btldr/boot/grub2/grub.cfg is preventing the upgrading of new versions of the kernel because I need to boot into level 3 in order to compile the nvidia driver for the new kernel.) Why does port 631 belong to init? and how can I restrict it to listen only on localhost? Hi everybody, The name of my new (amd hd7790) graphicscard is not recognized by the fglrx driver. At the moment it works at an acceptable level. But kwin does not use open-gl direct rendering. I have to set KWIN_DIRECT_GL=1 and KWIN_COMPOSE=O2 before kwin starts. In which configfile should i do this ? I have a machine with a fresh 12.3 install with all the updates. It will NOT run any gnome related apps while running KDE. Just trying to start gnome-terminal in kde causes this. A segfault occurs. Hi Apart from the obvious, passwd (5) doesn't say which fields are compulsory. I see that my local login is: lynn:x:1000:100::/home/lynn:/bin/bash and my login to AD is: lynn2:*:3000023:20513:lynn2:/home/users/lynn2:/bin/bash I need a domain user like a squashed root on NFS, so I made a user with just uidNumber and gidNumber: cifsuser:*:3000020:20513 It seems to work fine. cifsuser cannot authenticate but I see that ALL the entries in /etc/passwd on 12.3 installs have home directory and login shell populated. Question Is there anything I've overlooked? _Should_ I specify the 12.3 fields for cifsuser too? Hi, Is anyone able to use Moonlight/Silverlight in Firefox ? I need this for an application. I installed a Moonlight add-on, but Firefox says it's uncompatible with Firefox 23.0 (and a number of previous versions). There is plugin installed, but that does not do it's job (I think). I found a solution by disabling version checks of add-ons, then the "incompatible" add-on works fine. I tested this with the http://bubblemark.com/ site. In the time of sax, I would have no problem changing the settings of a monotor. Alas, sax is not more. As my normal 17 " monitor is under repair, I got a 15 " monitor to keep my machine running. Thismonitor, a Compaq S5500 should run native 1024x768at 60Hz. Vert.RR 54Hz. I plugged the monitor in and ended up with 640x480 and as the monitor reports H:31.4K and V:60Hz which is to course for normal use. [opensuse] networkmanager disconnecting

Hi, I am staying in a hotel at the moment and was being disconnected from the hotel's wifi network about every thirty seconds or so. I had been connected for about three hours, then I started to be disconnected continually. This went on for about an hour, till I restarted the computer. Then I was able to log onto the wifi net automatically again during startup. I looked up the /var/log/networkmanager logs to see if there was something obvious that was causing the disconnect and failure to log in again. But I only see that it shows that I am trying to connect and being disconnected. Hi, I was wondering how I could serve photo's and such to a tablet/smartphone. I know I can make a slide-show and upload that to a webserver, or install a CMS and use that to show the photo's, but are there more easy ways ? Mind you, it's only for home-use. No access from the Internet, although that could be just a firewall configuration. Of course, the server I want to use runs Opensuse. Thanks for any thoughts. Hi all. I'm still running openSUSE 11.4 because the last time I attempted an upgrade to 12.1, it ended in tears where KMail2 was such a surprise, particularly how it got so bundled with Akonadi and friends. I ended up reverting to 11.4 and have been there since then. However, I can't help but feel like I'm not enjoying any advances in KMail and other applications on openSUSE, given I'm on a release that is no longer being supported. My main issue is KMail. Does anyone know whether the migration from KMail on 11.4 to KMail on 12.3 is now behaving? One issue I saw was some kind of problem between how KMail and KWallet are integrated in 12.3. Opensuse list, I'm using openSUSE 12.1 (64 bit); KDE 4.7.2 I just upgraded the motherboard and processor to: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 - motherboard AMD FX -8120 Processor Nvidia GeForce GT 610 Graphics card The system boots fine. Its connected via the ethernet to a local cisco router that has internet access. I can log into the router at 192.168.1.1 and access all of the router functions, so it would seem the network card, drivers, etc. are all functioning. For some reason, web browsers will connect to all the LAN devices (router, printer, scanner) but will not connect to WAN. I disabled the firewall. I've searched Thunderbird lists and have not found anything related to Linux lockups like I am having. I am running Suse 12.2 and just upgraded to Thunderbird 17.0.7. I have had this problem beginning several versions ago, for about the last year. The symptoms are: - I get "cannot connect to gmail server" errors. I have about a dozen gmail accounts active in Thunderbird and it doesn't say which account. I do get mail from some of them, but I haven't been able to determine if it is with a certain account. Some accounts do have very large amounts of emails in multiple folders. - Starting Thunderbird, very often it "locks up" and I cannot scroll up and down the list of accounts. Waiting for an hour or more doesn't help. - Even if I can scroll and select an account, often selecting a new email locks up that account. The selected message will not display, but I can usually select another account and read mail normally. - Often when replying to a message, the new message's input locks up after one or a few characters. I hate this solution, especially as it reeks of the typical Windows "fix" with killing processes or rebooting. Killing the Thunderbird processes, often requiring that to be done 6-10 times often restores full functionality. Sometimes that doesn't work at all and often rebooting "fixes" it. As a BT subscriber I have activated the BTSport app. Not entirely to my surprise when I just tried to watch the first live game using Firefox it told me it won't run without Silverlight. So a question : can I get Silverlight to run on openSUSE (using 12.3 64 bit) ? Will Moonlight do this, and if so can I get it to run on Firefox or Chrome ? I have not done any research on this yet as I am shortly going out to a live football match. I thought I'd just try it to see if it works. FWIW I have it running on a W7 box at the moment and its no great shakes on there having dropped out a couple of times already, and this running BT Infinity on a well maintained quite high spec box. It is my son's gaming box and is no slouch. Any thoughts about the central issue ie can I do it with Moonlight or something else on openSUSE ? I know I could run it on Windows in a vm or get the BT tv box but I'm not that bothered to do either of those things. AMD FX 8320 (in a lot reviews it has the best performance per Euro :) ) vs Intel CPU at same price range 2) A few years ago the question would be clear if I should go nVidia or ATI but what about now? I have done an installation of a new openSUSE 12.3 system. Amongst the odd problems I am having is slow file copying. It makes no difference what physical drives are involved. Copying an 80 MB takes 15-20 seconds. Bigger files taks correspondingly longer. It makes no difference if the copy is to the same directory or to a different partition or even a different disk. On a different 12.3 install with similar (not the same) hardware, the copy takes less than one second. Copying over the network to a computer in another city is faster... Copying to /dev/null is fast as expected. So it seems that it is the writing to a disk part that is the issue. The file systems are ext4 with the default settings used from installation. The doc says "Intel® Extreme Graphics" The video is the problem. I tested Puppy Wary 5.2 - it works fine. It detects the video card but not the monitor, so I select from a list: 1024x768x16 h31.5-49,5v56-72. This works, fills the entire screen. I don't know if it is the maximum resolution, the documentation does not say (only that is «TFT 14” (N618) or 15” (N619-N620) XGA». The wikipedia lists XGA as "XGA 1024 768 4:3 0.786" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XGA#XGA_.281024.C3.97768.29) so it seems I have it right. During installation of openSUSE from DVD went perfect - slow, but uneventful. But on reboot, the display is incorrect. The working area is only '1'. It is the same in text mode as in graphical mode. I have removed plymouth and I'm booting to text mode. The normal kernel boot parameters are; showopts splash=verbose loglevel=3 console=tty1 display=1024x768 which does not work. Without "display=" I get the same results. I have not found documentation for the display option under "/usr/src/linux/Documentation" tree, so I do not know what to try there. At the moment I use: showopts splash=verbose console=tty1 loglevel=3 plymouth.enable=0 nomodeset I have tried: modeset=0 display=1024x768 --> white region nomodeset display=1024x768 --> 640*480 nomodeset display=1024*768 --> 640*480 display=1024x768 --> white region All official updates are applied. [opensuse] after kernel upgrade - mount.nfs says "protocol not supported".

I am upgrading a 12.2 system to 12.3 and I decided I would start with the kernel (3.7.10-1.16). This system boots over PXE+TFTP+root-on-NFS, so I had to run mkinitrd with "-f nfs" (I don't know why mkinitrd didn't find out itself). When I try to boot with the newer kernel, I end up with mount.nfs saying "protocol not supported". The NFS server hasn't changed, it was running fine right up until I tried this kernel upgrade. I've reverted to the previous kernel (3.4.47-2.38). Why should I go to the Oracle website as suggested in a howto, if Yast offersme an installation. Is it not complete and do I need anything else? Went to Yast and installed virtualbox with the idea that openSUSE would giveme a workable piece of software. But now I am stuck as I have no idea how tobegin. [opensuse] Tearing/stepping windows after updating to KDE4.11?

I just bumped up to KDE4.11, and I'm seeing something "new". It's minor, but visually annoying when I notice it. Basically if I move a window left or right, the window redraw steps... a portion of the window is always leading the rest, and the step point.. the tear?... drifts up the window from bottom to top. Once it reaches the top it starts over at the bottom again. It's like a wave flowing upward in the window. glxinfo gives me this: ---------------------------------------------- OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 660 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 4.3.0 NVIDIA 319.32 ---------------------------------------------- So, in theory it shouldn't be the video card.... I have been having issue on boot (12.3 see signature below) where it goes to a command line instead of the graphical interface, after doing an update in June. If I put a 5 at the end of the Linux line in grub2 menu, it goes to the graphical target. I finally think I found it today. /etc/systemd/system/Default target points to: Code --------- /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target ---------- /code Can I use the following code to fix this without messing up my system? [opensuse] firefox/seamonkey causing KDEInit problems

Hello, working on coding web I have a dolphin-, several text- and several seamonkey- or firefox-windows open. One of a sudden I cannot open files with a click on entries in dolphin, also desktop-icons do not start anything anymore. I get messages like KDEInit cannot start „/usr/bin/kwrite“ or KDEInit cannot start „/bin/sh“ (messages translated from my german desktop) I now found out that this happens when I have firefox or seamonkey windows open. After closing all of them, everything works normal again after a few seconds. I can reproduce it: no other windows open: - click on dolphin desktop icon opens dophin staring firefox: - click on dolphin desktop icon causes the small jumping icon, but dolphin does not open closing firefox: - click on dolphin desktop icon icon opens dophin again normally The same happens with seamonkey. It does NOT happen with other browsers (as far as my short tests showed): opera, konqueror and chromium do not cause the problem. Opensuse 12.3 KDE 4.10 Firefox 23.0 (Firefox for Opensuse) SeaMonkey 2.19 I havn't found anything corresponding to the problems in the logs. Any ideas? Thanks for hints! Instead, the FBDEV driver is used. I see that it loads the intel driver (after trying the nvidia). There is no obvious complaint. It just goes on to the FBDEV. The only error I see in Xorg.0.log is: (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory There is no /dev/dri directory at all. I was trying to configure a local packman repo mirror and after an unsuccessful attempt because of getting the URL wrong, I'm left with this message when clicking on "Software Repositories" in Yast. I have since successfully set it up but I can't get rid of this error??? All repos that enabled up are working including the packman mirror. Errors occurred while restoring the repository configuration. Error refreshing service Packman Repository (http://compro.packman.net/pub/linux/packman/suse/openSUSE_12.3/) Parse error: repoindex.xml[1] Opening and ending tag mismatch: meta line 1 and noscript The incorrect URL I originally entered is shown in the above error message. All, I just saw: http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/987798 It is a scary sounding attack since so much banking etc. is conducted via SSL Can someone explain the lifecycle of this attack to me? Does the vulnerability mean that an attacker could: - infect s PC (obviously linux is more difficult than windows, but Java vulnerabilities exist anywhere it is used) - use malware introduced via infection to query various banks and break SSL encryption key without the user even being logged into the protected website - watch network activity until a login to one of the banks in question occurs, then capture the login / password (Obviously, any ssl protected website could be similarly attacked. eg. gmail, salesforce, etc.) I assume that for a bad guy with the exploit in hand the hardest part of the above is monitoring the network activity at a low enough level to observe the compressed packets? Can software running with normal user privileges observe their own packets in that much detail, or does this attack require root access on the victim computer? I'm trying to use the HP Power Manager software which appears to require/expect a USB serial port when talking to the HP T1000 G3 UPS. The UPS _is_ connected via USB. Dear friends, since last Sunday I cannot fetch my mail any more. These are the last messages appearing on /var/log/fetchmail: fetchmail: 32 messages for wolfgang at pop3.ariannuccia.de (196062 octets). fetchmail: reading message wolfgang@mc01.omc.net:1 of 32 (5707 octets) (log message incomplete) fetchmail: Connection errors for this poll: name 0: connection to localhost:smtp [127.0.0.1/25] failed: Connection refused. name 1: connection to localhost:smtp [127.0.0.1/25] failed: Connection refused. fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from wolfgang(a)pop3.ariannuccia.de and delivering to SMTP host localhost fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP) Obviously, fetchmail can read the messages at the provider's server; otherwise it would not see 32 messages waiting. But it cannot deliver them to me since localhost refuses connections. How can I make localhost accept them again? For receiving mail, I now use a different computer of my network. But this can only be a temporary solution. Ok i been fooling around with this, and suspect I am missing something dumb... I have the following SOHO network configuration - Internet | Router A 169.254.1.1 | |-----169.254.1.200 Router B 192.168.20.1 --------- 192.168.20.100 Machine A | 169.254.1.100 (eth0) OpenSuSE Gateway Machine with SuSEFirewall 192.168.10.1 (eth1) | | 192.168.10.20 Machine B So how do I set up the SuSEFirewall and the network routing tables on the OpenSuSE Gateway to allow Machine B to see Machine A? I did set up a route in the Routing Table in YaST2 for the network interfaces as follows - Destination 192.168.20.0 Genmask 255.255.255.0 Gateway 169.254.1.200 Device eth0 The gateway address for Machine A is set to 192.168.20.1 The gateway address for Machine B is set to 192.168.10.1 The gateway address for the OpenSuSE Gateway Machine is set to 169.254.1.1 So far I have been unable to get Machine B to even ping Machine A. Is the SuSEFirewall interfering and if so what do I have to do to make it behave? I tried a few things with it also, but so far no joy. Apparently there is something called datareporting.health reporting in Firefox. The question is I do not recall enabling such thing at all even though it claims I did (liar "accepted-info-bar-button-pressed") . I have disabled all the rubbish, but the real question why on the earth this was packaged with these enabled ? And no I don't realy care how good/neat the intention was. Any software wanting to send data/connect to outer net has to get OK from the boss. Here are the relevant settings in the prefs.js. Hi, I probably do some silly mistake, but I can't manage it to work. [opensuse] How do I mount an NAS device on Suse 12.3?

I obtained a NAS, with a view toward running MySQL on a sever running MS Small Business Server 2003 (yes, I know, it is old, but I don't have authority to upgrade it or wipe it and install Linux on it). Anyway, the latest version of MySQL will not run on that machine. Therefore, I intend to run MySQL on the latest Suse (12.3) on a much newer server that I have almost fixed (this machine will have a 256 GB SSD). So, unless I can mount the NAS in such a way that MySQL on Suse can find it, the 4 TB NAS goes to waste (even though all machines on my LAN can see it and browse to it, which is fine if I only want to use Windows Explorer, or it's Linux equivalents, to copy files to it - but even on Windows, MySQL doesn't seem to see it unless I have mapped a specific MAS folder to a local drive letter, so I assume something similar is true on Linux). Hence my question. NB: I am a programmer, not a system administrator, so I am at a loss as to how to do this. NB: I did a Google search, which resulted in a very poor signal to noise ratio, but ended up confused by the different instructions given for the different distributions. And, worse, a lot of the pages I found were as old as that ancient SBS machine I can't use for this purpose. Obviously, things have changes a lot since then. Ok, I get it that there must be plenty of apps being ill-behaved and opening windows they probably shouldn't, but still. Yes, using the proprietary radeon driver, but I did that with 12.1 and never used to have this problem before 12.3. Google has not been helpful. Suggestions? TIA. I post this more or less for the Google Spiders..... I don't know what happened to the community Radeon drivers for legacy ATI cards but whatever it was is pretty amazing. I can't remember a time when it worked better on my legacy X1400 (dell 9400) laptop, even when it was supported by the ATI proprietary drivers. I've been using the version from this Repository (opensuse 12.3 x86_64) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_12.3/ In the past there were problems with resume, switching from a text terminal, and stuttering music if the KDE Desktop effects were turned on, and gaming was hopeless. Switching to that repository fixed all the problems but still required desktop effects to be off or sound would sometimes stutter. Just for a test, after several recent updates to that repository, I tried ALL of the above at the same time, Full KDE bling, Streaming music, and a quake engine FPS game. It was awesome. Almost Flawless. Just the slightest (barely perceptible) temporary stutter in the music upon returning from a console, or resuming from suspend. Within 15 seconds all perfect. Hi, one hopefully short technical question. I have Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor, http://ark.intel.com/products/71459 having 4 cores, 8 threads and running on clock speed 2.4 GHz. It should be automatically overclocked to 3.4 GHz in case of need, but I wonder how this works. Does it require any communication with kernel or even with user? Hi, there are still discussions about level of support of UEFI secure boot in openSUSE. 12.3 has experimental support for secure boot. I installed it on HP ENVY dv6 and it works fine. I set it up as described in release notes http://tinyurl.com/ls9kgse and it is perfectly working. As I'm used to, I use encrypted LVM to secure whole root. It works fine. I don(t know how general is that experience, but I think I can encourage others to at least try it. :-) I didn't try multiboot, so that I can't comment that. Hello, in all my linux installations, I used to replace /var/tmp by a symlink to a directory on my main user partition. The intent of this is to ensure that there is no private information on the root partition. Hi all, I have just noted that the latest official texlive update from the repo-update for openSUSE 12.3 wants to install 749 upgrades and 348 new packages. No problem with the upgrades; the problem is about the new packages: they are all -devel and texlive-*-doc packages. In particular, the -devel packages are required by freeglut-devel that is required by texlive-asymptote. Now, the questions are: - is it correct that texlive-asymptote requires freeglut-devel? - how can I prevent the installation of all -doc packages? Since short I have started to use Gramps genealogical software. The stable version 3.4.2-2.1.2 is on offer for 12.3 Tumbleweed. As there is a completely rewrite of this software developed I found this version 4.0.1-33.1 build by ecsos, found at: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/ecsos/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ I have put this site on the repositories and gave it the lowest number of all repos. Since two days I ran into following problem. Zypper dup wants to replace the 4,0.1 with the 3.4.2. Strange because the 4.01 has a higher number and the 3.4.2 has a higher repository number. I do not lock the 4.0.1 because than I would not get eventual updates. I have gotten curious about something as I read various tech trends, and maybe some of you all will know how to answer this. In the manufacturing industry, there are types of plants where you need centralized control for various components of a processing plant, like for example an oil refinery. A small scale type would have say 4 computers in an operator's control room running an HMI foroperator's input to plant control. These PCs usually havehardware and software that has connected them to whatever is controlling plant processes directly - usually PLCs or DCS or something like that. I think OPC is the industry standard for communication between PCs, PLCs, data loggers, historians, and other kinds of things in this kind of application. Naturally, since the operators are using computers, even if the computers are kind of locked out from regular use like soritng files and surfing theinternet, there would need to besome sort of security on these computers. There would need to be virus protection, firewalls, and other kinds of things. Manufacturers usually spend tons of money on windows based computers with a kind of software like Wonderware as the operator's HMI. However, there are some new companies that have developed Java based HMI applications that run fully on a linux pc (because it's java). I would be very interested to know if anyone out there knows someone who has designed/built a system with openSUSE running on the operator's HMIs. [opensuse] Problem: "Message blocked due to spam content in email."

Hi, I have been using Thunderbird for years to send emails, both to group lists and to individual addressees. Suddenly, many of my outgoing emails have been blocked and marked as undeliverable. I am using opensuse 12.3, and 13.1 both with the same problem. I am using Thunderbird 17.0.7 from opensuse. I am using KDE 4.10.5 release 1 in opensuse 12.3. I have tried to do some investigation of this problem, and found that in the Thunderbird Help menu> Troubleshooting Information, there is a section that says that my mail is being blacklisted because Mesa is out of date, and to update it to version 7.10.3 or newer. Yet my current Mesa is 9.0.2 I don't know if this is causing the mail to be undeliveralble or if this is a separate problem. [opensuse] Installing OpenSuSE 12.3 with text-to-speech during installation: I heard this was possible though I cannot find anything on the internet about it

Hi all, I'm emailing to ask if this is possible. My environment is as follows: Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop The installation will be performed via booting to a USB drive and then allowing it to format the hard drive during installation I will install Gnome and orca as my desktop environment (and either Speakup or YASR for the terminals) A friend of mine who deals with linux all the time said that a friend of his managed OpenSuSE installation with speech output, though he couldn't remember the command for it. Do any of you guys by any chance? Thanks! [opensuse] Self extracting encrypted archive

Greetings list, I am trying to create (and test) a self extracting encrypted archive. I am having an issue when I test trying to extract the archive. Here's my stub: #!/bin/bash ARCHIVE=`awk '/^__ARCHIVE__/ { print NR + 1; exit 0; }' $0` tail -n+$ARCHIVE $0 | gpg --output - - | tar xz exit 0 __ARCHIVE__ I've already created the ascii armored archive: tar -cvzf - ~/tmp/archive | gpg --symmetric --armor --output ~/tmp/archive.tar.gz.asc I create the full self extracting file like so: cat ~/tmp/stub ~/tmp/archive.tar.gz.asc > ~/tmp/archive.sh Now when I run archive.sh to test this I receive the following errors: gpg: CAST5 encrypted data No protocol specified xprop: unable to open display ':0' No protocol specified gpg-agent[5310]: can't connect to the PIN entry module: End of file gpg-agent[5310]: command get_passphrase failed: No pinentry gpg: problem with the agent: No pinentry gpg: encrypted with 1 passphrase gpg: decryption failed: No secret key gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now A gentle nudge with the clue bat to help me figure out how to get the self extracting file to use gpg cli passphrase entry would be most appreciated. [opensuse] 64 bit vs 32 bit RAM consumption

In googling the possibility of using a 64 bit kernel on an otherwise 32 bit openSUSE (consensus: don't try it), I found quite a bit of mention of 64 bit apps using twice as much RAM? Is this true? Or is it just misunderstanding arising from 64 bit using twice as many CPU registers to increase its own speed? Or something else? My main system running 32 bit 11.4 has 4GB RAM and is consistently using >50% of RAM for open apps, most of the rest for disk cache, and always around 360MB unused. Would running 64 bit on this system be consuming virtually all RAM for apps, leaving little free for disk cache? FWIW, not all RAM is "cheap". To bring this DDR2 system up to its 8GB max would cost ~$63USD. [opensuse] DNS Manager

Can anyone suggest a DNS Manager that would run on SLES? I'm looking for something like: https://projects.jethrocarr.com/p/oss-namedmanager/ Our company is pushing for everything to run on SLES and that one runs natively on Redhat flavors. I tried porting it over, but had enough problems that it made me uncomfortable. Anyway, looking for something more advanced than what webmin modules offer. Something that let's you manage DNS, propogate changes to slave DNS servers, and most important, logs any changes. Any suggestions are appreciated. [opensuse] 12.3 (64bit) Hibernate problem

Hello, I am noticing that hibernate function on opensuse 12.3 is not working as expected: today my notebook has powered-off due battery charge has gone below the limit and system has simply switched-off instead to hibernate. I red quickly some threads on regard and I applied a modification on suspend.conf by enabling "thread=y" but nothing has solved the root problem. I would expect when hibernate works correctly to restore the job from the point it has been freezed and have not to wait a lot of time for hibernate process take to attempt something that resolves to the need of rebooting the system again. Any comments/instructions on this problem? Thanks. [opensuse] 64-bit GLX config problem

I have both the 64 & 32 bit Mesa and supporting packages installed... I see ".so" files in /usr/lib64/dri/, but see nothing in updates other than a README: ------------- DRI Driver update mechanism --------------------------- If any corresponding DRI driver is found in "/usr/lib/dri/updates/" it will be favored over the one in "/usr/lib/dri/" and will be used for 32/64 bit applications. On 32/64 bit biarch platforms additionally a corresponding DRI driver in "/usr/lib64/dri/updates/" will be favored over the one in "/usr/lib64/dri/" and will be used for 64bit applications. ---- Any reason why it doesn't use the ".so" in /usr/lib/dri/ ? From the above, it doesn't appear to even try to load the driver from there.
