[opensuse] md stealing disks!

Hi Folks, Here's an odd one. I pulled a "zypper dup" yesterday on a 12.3 x86-64 without any obvious issues. But today, I connected a brand new 3.5-in SATA disk to the system with one of those SATA/USB converters. I do this all the time and have never had any issues. So, I "tail -f /var/log/messages" to get the /dev/sdx id and then run fdisk /dev/sdf, in this case. I create one Linux partition using the whole disk. No problems noted. But now, when I run "mkfs.xfs /dev/sdf1" I get this error: "mkfs.xfs: cannot open /dev/sdf1: Device or resource busy" df doesn't show anything, and the Device Notifier is quiet. I then notice this in /var/log/messages: "[ 1122.179127] md: bind<sdf>" It looks like md is snatching the disk! But I'm not running md, to the best of my knowledge. A "ps ax |grep -i md" shows: 90 ? S< 0:00 [md] 95 ? SN 0:00 [ksmd] Is systemd quietly starting md which is then trying to be helpful? "kill -9 90" doesn't touch the process. "cat /proc/mdstat" shows: Personalities : md126 : inactive sdf[0] 976224256 blocks super external:/md127/0 md127 : inactive sdf[0](S) 538328 blocks super external:ddf unused devices: <none> This process of adding/formatting disks has worked for decades before yesterday's zypper dup. [opensuse] Ruby is not working

[opensuse] Adding a directory under /var/run

Hi, I need to create a directory under /var/run. Since that is a tmpfs it disappears after a reboot when I create it manually. FWIW I use KVPNC to create a VPN. That supports my modem/router (FritBox). It has a some problems : - I need to give the root-password - racoon needs that /var/run/racoon directory - Stopping it seems not to work Maybe you can suggest another vpn-client that supports my Fritz-box ? official way of moving (12.3) to different hdd? dont boot, kernel panic, but all grub, grub2 and fstab edited to new devdiskbyid I was wondering what the actual official way is to move a current opensuse system to a new harddisk. I copied everything over via gparted live distro. Recreated all the partitions the same way (both are sata disks), copied over everything, went fine, activated the boot partition as bootable. Then due to a lack of current bootable rescue system with 12.3 i used an older dvd iso of 11.something or so to bootup into rescue mode and edit all the files I knew of where it mattered and exchanged those /dev/disk/by-id/ata...... from the old (samsung) to the new IDs (seagate). (fstab, menu.cfg of grub and I even had some grub2 directory that I also edited as well) The new disk then commenced to boot up also displayed the grub menu, but it would then always kernel panic after a little while when it continued to load the kernel and initrd. Later I selected the advanced entry 12.3 in the grub menu I dont recall any more what it was named exactly, but it displayed more messages and I could catch that at the end right when it kernel panicked, it still wrote out lines that it was missing the dev/disk/by-id/....samsung.... stuff, although I had changed all the places I knew about. So I had to fetch some current 12.3 bootable media, and eventually even had to mount all the disks in rescue mode and the special sys proc and some third directory, and then chroot into the system and then issue a mkinitrd which then apparently recreated something to a deeper extent and the system only then booted up from the new HDD. Am I doing things wrong here? It seems quite a big work when I compare this to older opensuse versions, where the steps of editing fstab and grub.cfg just simply worked back then. I never had to mkinitrd or chroot into a system when only a simple sata disk id had changed. What is the official way of migrating over to a new storage device for running aka booting from? Could anyone please answer this one for me: are the kernels available in, say, the .../Kernel:/stable/standard repository specifically written to be used ONLY in openSUSE or can they be used in any other Linux distro? [opensuse] Emacs in daemon mode

Hi, I am trying to set Emacs running in daemon mode /usr/bin/dbus-launch --sh-syntax --close-stderr \ --exit-with-session \ /usr/bin/emacs-gtk --daemon but as the daemon starts it barks the following message Warning: due to a long standing Gtk+ bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85715 Emacs might crash when run in daemon mode and the X11 connection is unexpectedly lost. Using an Emacs configured with --with-x-toolkit=lucid does not have this problem. But it loads all its config files, and I can connect the Emacs's daemon via emacsclient with no problems yet (touch wood). [opensuse] Malware on Disks

Hi Folks, I occasionally have to certify that brand new SATA disks don't contain any malware. The concern is of course for MS Windows threats, but policy doesn't care about subtle distinctions, it wants a "scan" to be done on the disks. Of course one test would be to use fdisk to make sure there's no disk partition label, the presumption being that no label == no filesystem == no malware. You need a filesystem to run a "scan". But is this strictly true? Could the "raw" device contain a filesystem that Windows would see? For example, instead of doing mkfs /dev/sda1, do mkfs /dev/sda. We can then "mount /dev/sda" in Linux, but what about Windows? Also, could there be something bad in the MBR that could point to a filesystem not present in the partition table? Maybe the safest course is to zero both the MBR and the label with dd? If it matters, the target disks are all SSD's. [opensuse] new to build service - stuck by "No live log available"

I am new to the open build service. Looks very promising. Yet when trying to package one of my open source projects (apps.jcns.fz-juelich.de/lmfit), I am stuck soon. [opensuse] Konqueror unusable after update - 12.3 KDE

There was an update applied to my computer yesterday. I now can no longer use Koqueror. I get these error messages when I try. I can use Dolphin. There was an error loading the module Sidebar. The diagnostics is: The plugin 'konq_sidebar' uses an incompatible KDE library (4.10.5 "release 1"). There was an error loading the module Dolphin View.
