[opensuse] Latex not working in 12.3

Hello, when running latex in 12.3, I get the following error: $ latex labels.tex This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (TeX Live 2012/TeX Live for SUSE Linux) restricted \write18 enabled. /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdftex/latex.fmt: Permission denied /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdftex/latex.fmt: Permission denied /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdftex/latex.fmt: Permission denied /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdftex/latex.fmt: Permission denied kpathsea: Running mktexfmt latex.fmt fmtutil: format directory `/var/lib/texmf/web2c' is not writable. I can't find the format file `latex.fmt'! $ Searching the web, I found http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/485… and https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/48… but installing texlive-collection-latexextra, texlive-collection-fontsextra and texlive-filesystem did not help at all. [opensuse] adding drivers for a wireless printer?

All, I just bought a Canon Pixma mx922 printer. It is working fine from windows. Canon is not showing any linux drivers for it. Looking at the HCL <https://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Printers> I don't see any Canon mx series printers. At least during the install time I can hook-up the USB cable, but to be useful I need to get it working via wireless. Am I whistling dixie. (ie. am I wasting my time?) [opensuse] Machine spec for 3d art

Hi All, I'm helping a friend replace his old Windows Vista machine which died in the heatwave. He does a lot of 3d art with blender (which has been terminally slow under vista.) I've provided a temporary Linux box (actually my testbed machine: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ with 2G ram, which is already faster than his old quad core with 4G) and I'm hoping that by the time he gets a new machine he won't want Windows on it... The 3d art is a hobby and the budget is limited. I'll be using his existing graphics card and 'on-board' sound will be more than adequate. So, which aspects of the spec are likely to have the most impact? I'm assuming more cores and more memory, but which would have the most impact for cost? Is there an appreciable difference between AMD and Intel chips? Are there any other aspects of the motherboard that might have a bearing on rendering speeds? Any and all comments welcome. I've noticed that I can no longer open additional desktops. When I click on Leave> Switch User on the menu, a "Desktop Sessions" box opens, but there's no way to open another desktop. This is a fairly recent change, but I have no idea exactly when. [opensuse] Sane driver for Reflecta ProScan 7200?

Hello, I tried to find a sane driver for my Reflecta ProScan 7200. There seems to be none, at least according to most of the websites like http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=Reflecta&model=&bus=any&… Vuescan is available for Linux but not of much help if the drivers are not there. [opensuse] Ubuntu Forum hacked

The Ubuntu Forum was hacked a couple of days ago- http://ubuntuforums.org/announce.html which led to a discussion about how secure Linux actually is. A question arises in my mind is: how vulnerable are our mailing lists/forum(s) seeing as how openSUSE MLs are also using vBulletin (an earlier version than the Ubuntu one, BTW). More discussion led to this URL- http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/ With regards to this last URL, how does openSUSE fair? I just looked at the archive for opensuse-security mail list (and subscribed to it) but for the month of July only see some fixes to what appear to be apps from 'third parties'. [opensuse] opensuse yast mail config and ldap search for virtual users fail

Over the last weekend all of my email to my domains started to bounce. I have a set up that was created and I manage through the yast2 advance mail config. I use LDAP GSS Cyrus Postfix and Fetchmail and I hadnt made any changes since before the upgrade to 12.2 (still not at 12.3 as I have to summon up a lot of courage to upgrade my server - I am such a coward) The error I was receiving in the postfix log was status=bouncedstatus=bounced (User unknown in virtual alias table) Note I say was as I have now "fixed" it and this is for information. I tracked the issue down to the /etc/postfix/ldapuser_recipient_maps.cf file This has the following ldap search to map a virtual user to the mbox to deliver the message to: query_filter=(&(objectClass=suseMailRecipient)(suseMailAcceptAddress=%s)(! (mailEnabled=no))(|(!(suseDeliveryToFolder=no))(suseMailForwardAddress=*))) This looks inocculous and I was scratching my head until I discovered that my openldap database (which was originally created back in 11.4 if my memory servers me correct) does not have the attribute "mailEnabled" aginst any of my users. However because the query string doesnt test for the existence then this query succeeds but returns no results and hence no mail box. I therefore amended the query string (only first part) to remove the mailEnabled test. This has however removed my ability to disable an mbox - not a facility I use. I am a little concerned that each time I go into yast config it will overwrite this so does anyone know if there has been a schema update that I have missed and which schema this attribute is in?
