[opensuse] Live USB question: OpenSuSE 12.3 on an Old Toshiba laptop

Hey there, I just have a quick question. Well, actually two. My first thing is that I have this older Toshiba Laptop with a dead hard drive and dead clock battery (I want to replace both eventually) but I'm not sure about the rest of it's internals. I'd like to use OpenSuSE 12.3 to test it out on a live USB. Will this work with 512 MB of RAM (what is available on the machine, but not the machine's limit) and a 2.0 ghz processor? (It might actually be 1.7, though I'm not sure.) The computer was built in CA. 2005, so do you folks from your experience think that I can use the latest OpenSuSE for this? (the laptop will run Windows 7 for a comparative reference.) Thanks. My next question is as follows. I couldn't get the SuSE studio image writer to write the image, and upon realizing that all that it does is extract the ISO file, I decided to go the manual route and extract it to the drive via 7Zip. Is this enough to make the drive bootable? And then lastly, since I've never used a live environment before, how can I set up the environment so that all it does is boots and loads rather than tried to install on the hard drive? You say on the site "suitable for installation". I'm not trying to install it on the hard drive, I'm trying to run it from the USB drive to test out audio and networking. Thanks. [opensuse] LibreOffice Unstable Build has failed

[opensuse] Android print solution?

Guys, With the iphone we were able to configure good print function via CUPS/Avahi, is there anything similar that can be done with an Android tablet? Looking, it doesn't appear that there is any basic print capability provided by Android (3.2 Honeycomb). I would like to print to by openSuSE server in the same manner I do from iOS. Anybody found a good solution? I have found PrintBot, but that isn't a solution because it cannot be used legally where confidentiality is required. (data is transferred to a 3rd party server before printing). I need to find a direct print solution. What says the braintrust? -- David C. [opensuse] convert mount to fstab

Hi How do I put this in /etc/fstab mount -t cifs //altea/shared /home/shared -osec=krb5,multiuser,username=cifsuser I've tried: //altea/shared /home/shared cifs sec=krb5,multiuser,username=cifsuser 0 0 and replacing the server with its IP, but nothing. The manual mount works fine. The client log shows no reference to cifs and there's no record of a request from it on the server. Any ideas? [opensuse] SSD and smartctl: Percentage Used Endurance Indicator: 34 ?

A value of 0 indicates as new condition while 100 indicates the device is at the end of its lifetime as projected by the manufacturer. The value may reach 255." How accurate is this? Does that mean, that 34% of the SSDs lifetime is already over? I do have /var with leafnode/usenet (lot of small files written) on that SSD but what I read on the net this shouldn't be a problem and approx. 2 years is not that much of lifetime. If that all is correct it would mean, that after another 4 years I have to exchange the SSD. ~6 years is that the normal lifespan of SSDs nowadays? [opensuse] fldigi with SuSE 12.3

Earlier this week I installed fldigi on my PC that is running SuSE 12.3. It seems to work ok in the root account but when I try to run under a regular user account, a window opens briefly and then the program closes. I tried starting by typing fldigi in a terminal window to see if I could get any meaningful messages about the failure. I don't remember the exact message but it appears that it is a permission problem with the sound card. Does anyone have experience with fldigi and how to get the correct sound card permission? [opensuse] need some ideas - traffic appears to be disappearing

I am having some trouble with a new system I'm setting up. It's essentially a clone of a node of an existing cluster, except the new node is running openSUSE 12.3, the old ones openSUSE 11.0. Inbound TCP traffic doesn't seem to work, so I've been debugging this for a while. I have a postfix daemon listening on port 25, but when I try to telnet to it, nothing happens. I've set up the following iptables rules: iptables -A PREROUTING -t mangle -i ipip1 -j LOG --log-level debug --log-prefix 'prerout: ' iptables -A INPUT -p all -i ipip1 -j LOG --log-level debug --log-prefix 'input: ' iptables -A FORWARD -p all -i ipip1 -j LOG --log-level debug --log-prefix 'forward: ' I only get the message logged in PREROUTING, nothing in INPUT nor FORWARD. What is happening to my message??? Note: a) when I telnet from an external address (desired), the message disappears. 2) if I telnet from a local (10.7.2.x) address (contrived), the message appears. Does this ring a bell with anyone? [opensuse] Ideas on network prioritization?

Hi - I am running openSuSE12.3 on my gateway computer for my SOHO network. We have a number of hybrid cell phones around here that can connect either via our wireless network using VOIP to connect to other telephones or they can use the phone companies regular 3G network (but we are discouraged from doing so in order to keep costs down). We noticed that when using the WiFi connection, we often get a lot of dropouts and broken/lost connections, particularly when heavy network traffic such as backups are going on. My question is this, Is there any way to prioritize network traffic such that when a cell phone conversation is going on, that cell phone is given higher priority over all other network traffic? I am using a DCHP server and could set it up to assign a specific IP address (I think) to each cell phone presuming they have a MAC address or a unique identifier, if that would help. I have started poking my nose into IPTables, but finding it difficult to understand or get a handle on whether there is a way to prioritize network traffic using it. And I am not sure I want to simply give a cell phone high priority as these are smart phones and I would prefer phone conversations have high priority, not cell phone apps. [opensuse] Question on Drivers for Hardware

Guys, I been tasked to build a kiosk app with SUSE Studio. The one problem I am running into, is that JeOS doesn't give all the drivers for every piece hardware where out there. What packages would you recommend for me to add, how can I get to do that detect hardware when the kiosk first boots up. The project I am work on for School, it a way we can give them a bootable usb drive, that boots up to x ( I am using ice because it small ), use Chrome to take a test. Once the test is does, they can reboot the computer with usb drive and it be clean for the next student. If I can get to work, this would be a big step for openSUSE. So please any advice would be welcome. My alpha right now fit on 4GB usb drive, I got broadcom, intel, and most of the network drives, but I looking for others.
