[opensuse] gtk and desktop effects

Dear List, Here is a curious problem.. I am using suse 11.3 (kde 4.4) with desktop effects. When the composizing is on, some gtk based programs don´t work at all.. xfig and inkscape are giving me hard time. In xfig, the menu icons don´t appear at all, inkscape works *very* slow if at all.. Is there some option somewhere that might fix the problem? [opensuse] custom hotkeys

Dear List, I need to simulate keystrokes using hotkeys, say, I want that CTRL+TAB launches the command "ssh myname@remoteserver" in the terminal that I am currently in. I could do it in suse 10.X, but not with 11.3 and KDE 4.X (it is impossible). [opensuse] Beowulf Clusters, Kiwi-LTSP, Virtual Thin Clients

Dear All I am looking to build a small beowulf cluster running openSUSE 11.4 during the summer my concept is to reclaim older pentium 4's and put the together so they are running as one. I would then like to enable LTSP and XRDP to allow thin clients to harness their power as a virtual desktop. I have found reports on how this was done using an old laptop with 128mb of ram as a thin client booting into kiwi-ltsp and openSUSE. [opensuse] openSUSE 11.3: how to save the package list on a failed install

Hi, I have finally gotten around to installing openSUSE 11.3 on a PC I have. However, I have made two complete attempts and several "fix it" attempts on the first failed attempt and have yet to get a successful install. The installs both failed with the "fetchmsttfonts" failing and resulting in a "YaST2 Error Command exited with status 5" error popup with an "OK" button on it. I am looking for some way to proceed from here without having to restart the install from scratch again and to have to select all the needed packages yet another time. More background follows. The first time thru, I saw the "OK" and clicked it before reading anything else and the installer aborted back to text mode. I tried running the install again as an upgrade install, hoping that would fix it, but, instead, first got a system that only booted to runlevel 3 and was mostly unconfigured (I could not log in at all even though I'd set a user account and a root password!). Subsequent upgrade install attempts resulted in the installer recommending the deletion of several hundred packages, increasing in number each time I ran it(!). I did another install attempt from scratch, this time using the netinstall CD and selecting the oss, non-oss, and update repos (the first install attempt had been made from the install DVD with the addition of the Addon-NonOss-BiArch and AddonLang CDs as well as the three netinstall URIs above). Again, the install failed. This time I read the entire screen and have not yet clicked the "OK" button. I logged in to the system from one of the available text mode consoles and noticed that the system is still mostly unconfigured. What should be my next move from here? Is it possible to rescue this install? If not, is there a way to obtain a copy of the package list and import it into a new, fresh install so I don't have to go thru all the packages looking for the ones I need (a time consuming and tedious process for me). I found the y2log and the zypp/history log files which contain millions of lines of status between them and which appear to contain all of the packages selected. However, I was not able to locate a simple package list anywhere. If there is not list, anyone know the required format so I could possibly format, e.g., the zypp/history log contents into a suitable file? Any help would be appreciated! [opensuse] How do I mount USB drive world writable using device notifier?

Hello - I haven't gotten an answer from the KDE mail list, so guess I will try here also.. I have an issue which is a bit annoying to work around, so would like to find a more reasonable solution. My wife and I have laptops running openSuSE 11.2 and 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 and KDE 4.5 We both use an external USB drives formatted with a FAT32 file system and often want to send pictures or other files back and forth to store on these external drives. Right now, we cannot do this directly, though we can navigate to the other's USB drive and see files on it. I use both Samba and autofs to mount file systems from each other's laptop. What we can do is to transfer files to some other directory, such as /tmp and then locally transfer the files from /tmp to the USB drive. A PITA sometimes.... It appears that the USB drive is being mounted with rw permissions for the owner only, and only r permissions for groups and others. I suspect that we need to set the permissions of the mount point to be rw for everyone? We use the KDE device notifier to handle the mounting of the USB drives, but I am unable to figure out how to change the default permissions. Internet searches reveal I am not the only one confronted with this problem, but so far I have not been able to find an openSuSE oriented solution... Any ideas? [opensuse] annoying 11.3 nvidia / graphics hiccup

Hi All, I could not get 11.3 x86_64 to correctly configure my graphics to match the working (seemed simple to set up at the time) configuration I'd had in 11.1 So, as an experiment, I transplanted my 11.1 working xorg.conf and *bingo* it worked ... for a few minutes :-( ... but exhibited a very annoying problem related to twinview, described below. I Googled, studied relevant forums at nVidia, dug through all my 'forensics / debugging' notes to no avail. So, I downgraded the nVidia driver using their installer (works a treat; backs the existing config up and installs an '--unstall' option to back it out, if needed.) The downgraded driver works beautifully but I'd prefer to not have to manually intervene every time there's a kernel update. Below is a copy of my post at the nVidia forum (not holding my breath.) The 'broken' configuration (starting with the new default openSUSE 11.3 install running either of the later nVidia drivers) causes the mouse pointer to lock up and momentarily disappear, and the normal panning to fail, when I attempt to breach the upper or lower boundary of the laptop display. This is triggered on either display, but the disappearance of the mouse pointer is more visible on the larger one. I can 'bump' the boundaries and wait for the mouse pointer to reappear, and in this manner gradually, incrementally navigate around. But the system isn't actually usable. I've transplanted a copy of the working 11.1 xorg.conf and downgraded the driver and the system is running great. But it would be better to not have to intervene manually at every kernel update. [opensuse] Strange problem with Pure-FTPD on OpenSuSE 11.1

Hello all, Today i have noticed a strange problem with Pure-FTP. I use pure-ftpd-1.0.21-182.33.2 on OpenSuSE 11.1 (x86_64) with virtual users stored into the PureDB user database. An ftp user have a limitation from the IP Address he can connect. His entry into the puredb.passwd is something like this: ftp04:$XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:1001:1005::/home/ftpusers/ftp04/./::::::::::151.1.1.1:: This means the user ftp04 is usable only from the IP address 151.1.1.1, right? Well, not in this case. For some strange reason, that IP into the PureDB file is ignored, and anyone can connect with that ftp user. Note: when i have edited the PureDB database, i have also recreated the database with the command pure-pw mkdb.... so the database is up to date. I have noticied today because i have added another IP address, and a customer that previously can connect without IP authorization, now can't connect. So, now the IP rule is now working, previously not, without any apparent reason.. That system have Verbose Log setted to yes, but into the logs i have the unauthorized IP with that user, but no signs of software problems or misconfiguration of any type. Now i am trying to recreate the same situation into a similar system, without any success: the IP filter is always working. Anyone have experienced a problem like this and can put me on the right way for the comprension of that strange situation? Any help is well accepted. [opensuse] autoinstall question

openSUSE 11.2 system I am using the autoyast feature in Yast to make a description of a system that I want to use when installing other systems. I have a question: In the source system, I am using a newer KDE (4.5.5) than on the installation media. If I have the required repos in place in the autoyast.xml file, should the install get the needed RPMs from those repos instead of the DVD I am installing from? I ask because I would not think the network is even up at the time the packages are installed. This is probably true for other packages that are on the reference system: they come from repos other than the install DVD. Is there a good description of how to deal with this when installing from a DVD, and using an autoyast.xml file? An alternative I am also exploring is using kiwi to make an install DVD that contains all the needed packages. I think they would be obtained by kiwi when the install dvd image is made. If I understand the kiwi docs correctly. I have only used kiwi to make diskless openSUSE images that boot over PXE (which is another kettle of fish). All productive suggestions are welcome. Anyone been there and done that? [opensuse] Can't burn openSUSE 11.4 Milestone 6 DVD

Hi, I downloaded openSUSE 11.4 Milestone 6 DVD and tried to burn it to a DVD+R and a DVD+RW with several different tools (K3b, CD Burner XP, growisofs, etc.) without success. The bottom line is that it seems that the image is too big for the disk. The image openSUSE-DVD-Build1034-x86_64.iso is reported to be 4750970880 Bytes. dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr0 reports READ CAPACITY: 2295104*2048=4700372992 So the image is 50,597,888 bytes bigger than the DVD. Is this expected? Can't openSUSE be burned on a DVD+RW or DVD+R? Does it require a dual-layer disk? Or am I just missing something obvious? [opensuse] kdeinit4 run and runs

Do not know what happened to my system but practically 90 % of my cpu is used by kdeinit4 and it will not stop. Is there a metod to let it stop or let it finish what it is trying to do?
