As for purpose, I don't think that is important, but we are creating a database of old family pictures and want to categorize them by placing in different sub-directories. (along with other documents) Think about genealogy and family trees and you will get the idea. She works on some, I work on some.... When I get done with some work, I want to move the updates onto her USB drive and this data must be placed in appropriate or new directories as needed, and v.s. for her.. I agree that reducing security is a risk. But usability is far more important! I think the security wonks keep forgetting that. If security measures prevent one from using their computers, without having to invest hours and hours of time to grok em, then that IS a serious problem! Do some internet searching sometimes and you will find out that a great many users become frustrated with all the security layers and models being used, both in Linux and Windoz. My attitude is to get the computer to a usable state first, THEN worry about security and notch it up as time and needs dictate and allow... The security models of Linux (and Windoz) are both inconsistent and extremely difficult to correct sometimes, and that can render a computer nearly unusable, or extremely difficult at best, for accomplishing some given task... (such as this one...) We have worked out a model on how we want to solve our problem, theoretically transferring files directly to USB drives should follow the model of, and be as easy to perform, as transferring files to internal hard drives. The computer (Linux) should assist the user in doing such a simple task, NOT make it difficult! [opensuse] No more /boot on RAID1?

Just installed SuSE 11.3 onto a machine with 2 disks in RAID1. Unlike the 11.1 machine on which I am typing this email, it wouldn't let me install grub, etc to /boot if that partition was RAID-ed. I found: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-log… But this confuses me. 11.1 let me "just do this", whereas 11.3 complains. Is it necessary to do the editing of grub or no? Was there some change in this respect between 11.1 and 11.3? I ended up making /boot non-raid, which is slightly unfortunate, as the point of RAID1 (for me anyway) is failover and its kind of nice to think that the bootloader and kernel are "protected" in the same way as /home, etc.. [opensuse] kde4-4.5.5 kcolorchooser - howto stop it from dimming display so I can 'choose' a color from the screen?

Guys, This is somewhat comical behavior. When you start kcolorchooser, the screen is dimmed (the same way it gets dimmed when you choose shutdown) making it impossible to 'choose' a color from the screen with kcolorchooser. I know this is probably a setting somewhere that causes this to happen. None of the other apps dim the screen when I launch them. Thus the irony -- "kde4 kcolorchooser can't choose a color from the screen" because it dimmed the darn thing when it launched. Where is the mysterious setting that will fix this? -- David C. [opensuse] How to install behind a proxy?

Hello, I tried to install opensuse11.3 behind a firewall. The installer for older releases used to offer the possibility to deactivate automatic configuration (directly after accepting the license). When this option was checked, it was possible to configure the proxy (and hostname and more things) before the online-update was run. This "deactivate automatic configuration" button seems no longer to exist. So, how am I supposed to configure the proxy before running the online update without this option? BTW: Older releases used to offer a shell on virtual terminals. This was convenient in the case of problems. This also don't seem to be available any longer. [opensuse] Opensuse 11.3 KDE not running anymore

Hi, I have OpenSUSE 11.3 with a system that hangs when run in Normal Kernel mode; does not hang in Failsafe mode. In trying to fix that problem I booted with the Kernel with the option nomodeset. As of that boot and another KDE will not run from the KDM4 display manager. I am really stuck with this machine and openSUSE. Help will be greatly appreciated. [opensuse] Alt for FileZilla with "overwrite if newer"

I'm looking for an alternative (pref free) to FileZilla with "overwrite if newer" I'm running the latest version 3.3.5.1 on SUSE 11.3. I maintain 2 websites and have to have this function. I have file a bug report with FileZilla but so far no answer. The original thread started in late December, after I had messed up v11.3 irretrievably by trying to updated KDE4.4 to v4.5 by proceeding according to instructions that turned out to be obsolete. The conclusion was that I needed to reinstall v11.3 on a clean partition and copy over data and much else from the corrupted installation. Over a month later (day before yesterday) I got around to making the new installation, and it is working well, after only a single glitch, and is still on KDE4.4 that came from the DVD. I want now to update it to KDE v4.5 -- not v4.5.5, having just now read the following snippet written by Will Stephenson in current thread: > The kmail maintainer looked at > https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=265293 > within a few hours and pointed out the commit to backport to 4.5 to fix > the GL capabilities check. [opensuse] YAST print manager: how to add driver to printer?

Hello: In earlier SUSE versions (9.x, 10.x) it was very easy to add a driver to a printer. Now in openSUSE 11.2 I can't find out how to add PCL driver to my Kyocera FS-1020D printer. In the "Assign driver" window only one driver is shown: the manufacturer's ppd file. The printer works with PCL6 and many other drivers which are not shown and therefore can not be assigned to the printer. Is this a bug, or only a bad design, or did I miss something? [opensuse] Permission denied when mounting CIFS filesystem

Hello all, With opensuse-11.3, I can't mount CIFS filesystems anymore: kiste:/ # mount -t cifs -o domain=wgrp,user=myself '//server.com/MYSELF$' /net/h Password: mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) This worked fine with opensuse-11.2. The problem must be with mount() system call, since I can access the share with smbclient without any problems: kiste:/ # smbclient -Wwgrp -Umyself '//server.com/MYSELF$' Enter myself's password: Domain=[WGRP] OS=[Windows Server 2003 R2 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 R2 5.2] smb: \> exit I've checked the permissions of the mount point, and everything looks fine.
