[opensuse] Opensuse 11.3 KDE not running anymore

Hi, I have OpenSUSE 11.3 with a system that hangs when run in Normal Kernel mode; does not hang in Failsafe mode. In trying to fix that problem I booted with the Kernel with the option nomodeset. As of that boot and another KDE will not run from the KDM4 display manager. I am really stuck with this machine and openSUSE. Help will be greatly appreciated. [opensuse] Alt for FileZilla with "overwrite if newer"

I'm looking for an alternative (pref free) to FileZilla with "overwrite if newer" I'm running the latest version 3.3.5.1 on SUSE 11.3. I maintain 2 websites and have to have this function. I have file a bug report with FileZilla but so far no answer. [opensuse] Upgrading KDE 4.4 > 4.5 -- was: Graduated from "Absent trash icon" to disaster

The original thread started in late December, after I had messed up v11.3 irretrievably by trying to updated KDE4.4 to v4.5 by proceeding according to instructions that turned out to be obsolete. The conclusion was that I needed to reinstall v11.3 on a clean partition and copy over data and much else from the corrupted installation. Over a month later (day before yesterday) I got around to making the new installation, and it is working well, after only a single glitch, and is still on KDE4.4 that came from the DVD. I want now to update it to KDE v4.5 -- not v4.5.5, having just now read the following snippet written by Will Stephenson in current thread: > The kmail maintainer looked at > https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=265293 > within a few hours and pointed out the commit to backport to 4.5 to fix > the GL capabilities check. [opensuse] YAST print manager: how to add driver to printer?

Hello: In earlier SUSE versions (9.x, 10.x) it was very easy to add a driver to a printer. Now in openSUSE 11.2 I can't find out how to add PCL driver to my Kyocera FS-1020D printer. In the "Assign driver" window only one driver is shown: the manufacturer's ppd file. The printer works with PCL6 and many other drivers which are not shown and therefore can not be assigned to the printer. Is this a bug, or only a bad design, or did I miss something? [opensuse] Permission denied when mounting CIFS filesystem

Hello all, With opensuse-11.3, I can't mount CIFS filesystems anymore: kiste:/ # mount -t cifs -o domain=wgrp,user=myself '//server.com/MYSELF$' /net/h Password: mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) This worked fine with opensuse-11.2. The problem must be with mount() system call, since I can access the share with smbclient without any problems: kiste:/ # smbclient -Wwgrp -Umyself '//server.com/MYSELF$' Enter myself's password: Domain=[WGRP] OS=[Windows Server 2003 R2 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 R2 5.2] smb: \> exit I've checked the permissions of the mount point, and everything looks fine. [opensuse] Problem with activities on KDE4.4 / OS11.3

Hi, Out of curiosity I tried to change the activity of my Desktop from "Desktop" to "Search and Launch". It worked, I enjoyed the menu for a while and then decided to go back to my previous settings. The problem is that with the "Search and Launch" activity the cashew in the top right corner is gone and right clicking on the desktop does nothing. How do I change the activity back to "desktop"? [opensuse] Selected text in Okular, KDE4 stopped responding requiring hard reset?

I opened a PDF in Okular 0.12 (a single page text document), and selected the text. As soon as I did this, KDE4.6.0 started doing odd things. Apps stopped responding to mouse clicks, the KDE4 desktop stopped responding (eg clicking the KMenu or any app in the taskbar did nothing). I could switch apps using Alt+Tab, but the apps did not respond to mouse clicks. I switched over to tty1 and logged in as root. Attempts to kill Okular (using kill -9) didn't help. Okular wouldn't die.... same with trying to kill any other open app from CLI... they never changed state, and never exited. I then killed X by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace twice. This seemed to work, but KDM did not relaunch and put me in the login screen. At tty1 I attempted to do an init3, and this failed with a KDM not responding error. Last resort, I typed reboot and hit enter. The system message "The system is going down for reboot NOW" was shown... but the reboot never happened. I ended up having to do a hard reset to get back up and running. So... I probably could have troubleshot this a lot better, but... these are the basic steps I did up to the hard reset. I have no reason to install it, and YaST sees that a package of this name exists on a repo, but says it is not installed. [opensuse] What repositories going foreward?

Now that we have arrived at KDE 4.6.0, after a rather smooth "stabilization ride" I'm wondering what repositories would be be the best to be using going forward. This version has most things working, and it seems to be a joy to use KDE again. I don't mind an occasional short term breakage here and there as long as core packages continue to work. I like to be up to date, but also up and running. [opensuse] How to align for 4kb sectors?

I've installed a new RAID array in my home server and the disks are using 4KB sectors instead of the traditional 512 byte sectors. How do I properly align the partitions to this disk? YaST partitioner shows "cylinders" and I can not come up with a formula to convert cylinders to sectors. My understanding is since 8 x 512 = 4096 (4kb) all I need to do is ensure that my partitions are aligned to multiples of 8 sectors. -- Med Vennlig Hilsen, A.
