Hello:
This question might bee too specific here but I give a try before I subscribe to opensuse-kernel list.
I have openSUSE 11.2 with kernel version 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop (i586) which works OK.
Recently I have installed kernel kernel-desktop-2.6.37-35.1.i586 from kernel-HEAD repo.
When I try to boot this kernel the boot process stops with the following messages:
"fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/mapper/nvidia_xxxx_part12
/dev/mapper/nvidia_xxxx_part12:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a corect ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filessystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>"
I get the same maessage for all of the softraid devices (dev/mapper/nvidia_xxxx_partxx)
(The root partition is not located on a raid device.)
Finally I get:
"fsck failed for at least one filesystem (not /).
Please repair manually and reboot.
The root filesystem is is already mounted read-write.
...
Give root password for login."
When I give the root password and enter the the shell
all the /dev/mapper/nvidia_xxx devices are there (ls -l /dev/mapper)
I can mount manually all the devices for which the above error messages were given
with no problem. (The normal kernel, 2.6.31 also mounts these devices with no problem
at boot.)
Why aren't these devices mounted when the new kernel is booted?
How could I fix this?
Thanks,
Istvan

Hi,
When "Starting the Software Manager"
during the 'Load Configured Repositories' stage
the following message appears.
Warning
There was an error in the repository initialization.
The software Manager window then loads.
Doing a 'Refresh all Repositories' is successful.
After any kind of a change and selecting 'Accept' the Software Manager window
disappears and the following Error message appears. No software is installed.
This error message also appears after other Yast2 tasks, 'Network Settings',
'Hostnames' however, with these the changes do take effect.

Thank you,

On openSUSE 11.2 on a desktop computer (not a laptop), I ran
cpufreq-info to see what speed my processor was running at. The system
was doing things, so I would imagine it would be set to a higher
frequency. But that seems not to be the case.
cpufreq-info lists (same for all CPUs):
analyzing CPU 0:
driver: acpi-cpufreq
CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0
hardware limits: 1.60 GHz - 2.40 GHz
available frequency steps: 2.40 GHz, 1.60 GHz
available cpufreq governors: conservative, userspace, powersave, ondemand, performance
current policy: frequency should be within 1.60 GHz and 2.40 GHz.
The governor "userspace" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency is 1.60 GHz (asserted by call to hardware).
So I tried setting it to 2.4 GHz to see if that happened:
# cpufreq-info -w
1596000
# cpufreq-set -f 2.4GHz
# cpufreq-info -w
2400000
My question is: how/where should I set it so the CPU frequency is
increased when there is system load? I am guessing it is the 'ondemand'
governor that should be selected. But where? I did not see any likely
place in /etc/sysconfig or in an /etc/init.d script.
http://doc.opensuse.org/products/opensuse/openSUSE/opensuse-reference/cha.p…
had some to say, but did not really satisfy my curiosity. I am guessing
that the default is set to 'powersave'. Does that sound correct?
Yours sincerely,

Hi,
Running OpenSuSe 11.2 and a 11.3 on separate hardware both with KDE and
would like to find out which file I can edit using my trusty Kate or
kwrite text editor that would control the screen resolution.
I currently need to use krandrtray to set the resolution from the system
auto default of 1680x1050 to a more respectable/readable 1024x768. If I
logoff or power down the machine, I need to visit krandrtray each time
to set the screen resolution as it defaults to the auto setting of
1680x1050 when I logon again.
I have already Googled and looked at the mailing list archives and have
not seen anything specific other than what I have tried already.
What I would like to know is which filename, read by the OS on user
logon, decides the screen resolution for that user. Can I edit the
contents of this/these file/s using the Kate/Kwrite text editor?
Appreciated
Hylton
