Hello, Noticed and interesting change when setting up an SMB printer in Suse 11.1. There is no printer lookup function in the UI so you need to know the name of the printer and the manufacturer before you can set it up. In Suse 10.3 you can select 'Look Up' to get a list of printers hosted on the Windows server. Is there a way to get the functionality in Yast in Suse 11.1? [opensuse] ni title, min, max and close button after activated compiz

[opensuse] Strange behaviour: yast2 hangs during startup

Hello every body, when starting yast2 from the command line after becoming root via e.g. "yast2 sw_single" or "yast2 lan" yast2 gets stuck within waitpid (at least strace told me that) - until now, I have not found the process yast2 is waiting for at this point. The curious things is: starting yast2 via the kde menu, ALT-F2 or even from the command line via ssh works fine, I did not observe any hangs so far, using these options. So far, google did not provide me any useful suggestions. I do not think that another yast2/zypper/... activity is blocking yast2, otherwise starting yast2 via the kde menu or ALT-F2 would not work either. Any hints are welcome. [opensuse] Update to compiz 8.2 killed Cube Reflection and Deformation for 11.0

Listmates, I was glad to see compiz 8.2 finally in the XGL repository. I knew it would run well on this box, I run it in my archlinux install on the same box. However, something is wrong with the openSuSE rpm for 11.0. The first thing I noticed was the cylinder rotation was gone. I then checked the "Cube Reflection and Deformation" setting and it was unchecked. I then attempted to check it, the check mark appeared, then 3 seconds later the checkmark removed itself just like the XGL mess that we went through in the compiz 6x to 7x transition. To test, I completely uninstalled compiz: rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep compiz) fusion-icon and then reloaded compiz from the X11/XGL repository like I have always done. Same problem. The packages I have installed are: compiz-branding-openSUSE-0.8.2-92.1 compiz-0.8.2-92.1 compiz-plugins-main-0.8.2-10.1 compiz-kde-0.8.2-92.1 python-compizconfig-0.8.2-3.1 compiz-emerald-0.8.2-2.1 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.8.2-6.1 libcompizconfig-0.8.2-9.1 compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.2-8.1 fusion-icon-0.0.1_080201-5.1 emerald-themes-extra-0.1.0-5.1.noarch.rpm This is with 11.0 and the fglrx driver. Everything else seems OK, wobbly, expo, scale, shift-switch, opacity, zoom, etc.. just not Cube Reflection and Deformation. Anybody know the solution? Anybody else seeing this?? -- David C. Hi list, - I just followed Sven's advise (thank you) to refresh/upgrade my openSuSE11.1 installation. - hmmm...it didn't fix anything - but gave me a number of additional problems (for which Sven is NOT to blame, certainly not). One of the funny things is that when I login, a dialog comes up says: krunner crashed... If I open up a console, this console will crash uppon exit. Worse, if I open up two or more consoles (I do a lot of remote SSH work), when I exit just (any)one console, they ALL crash. Quite annoying... Again, any ideas? [opensuse] Making KDE the default desktop once again

Frank Karlitschek has posted on his blog about the possibility of having openSUSE use KDE as the default desktop. <http://blog.karlitschek.de/2009/07/lets-make-kde-default-in-opensuse.html> This is an interesting question, historically KDE was the default desktop of SuSE, until what seemed like internal politics made a play to have GNOME pushed as the preferred option instead. From the outside one can only speculate what happened at that time but the end result is we have the choice of either GNOME or KDE at install time. The majority of the openSUSE user base uses KDE, this is not in dispute. Would it not then make more sense to have KDE as the default desktop? What do you think? Has having a choice of desktop at installation time brought any tangible benefit? Should openSUSE go back to using KDE as the default desktop or maybe you think that GNOME should be the default desktop instead? First I can download the file primary.xml.gz without problem using Firefox. In Yast the proxy settings are empty(not established).The firewall I use is the suSE Firewall configured automatically on install. The exact error message is: Download(curl) error for "http://download.opensuse.org/.../primary.xml.gz" Error code unrecognized error. Error message: transfer closed with 951976 bytes remaining to read. When I close this error message appears a second: Cannot access installation media (Medium 1) Check whether the server is accessible. Today I finally installing opensuse 11.1 kde 4.2 in all machines. Q. Using yast software manager to update the system very often I get a curl error and a connection time out. I retry and everything is OK. Everything is working OK but I had to be behind the screen to interact all the time with this connection time outs. I do not remember anything like that previously. [opensuse] Disappearing mouse functions

I have suddenly have had my mouse button function quit working minutes after logging in. I may not even be able to finish typing this message before it quits. The curser mover around but after it happens I can no longer click with either the left or right button. It makes web searches difficult as well to try to find an answer. I am using 11.1 32bit KDE 3.5 I also allowed a couple updates in the last day. Any pointers would be appreciated. Hello, I used to use yast to configure my server automatic updates, but the last one was 10.1 :-) now with 11.1 I don't find any yast module to configure *automatic* update. Hi all, I know its just I need to install something, but I'm not sure what. When I give this command: python setup.py install I get this error: running install error: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/lib/python2.5/config/Makefile (No such file or directory) I have python 2.5.2 installed on SuSE 11.1 but I guess that I'm missing something. For instance the e-mail sender should have this "user(a)example.com" form but it appears as "user@mail-s. example.com". I haven't been using commandline extensively for some years, and when I come back to Linux, I was surprised to see GUI software being developed so fast and so well on Linux (and feel happy about it). However I wonder if current commandlin isn't as useful as was. e.g. in order to play midi music keyboard I instantly think of doing this: $ timidity < /dev/midi timidity is the player that generate sounds from midi events. /dev/midi is the device that produce such events, like /dev/ttyS0 when connected to a mouse. And I was told no, that's not the way it is. correct way is: $ timidity -AD # put to daemon mode $ aconnect 16:0 128:0 # 16:0 is another way to represent /dev/midi # while 128:0 is the virtual device that generates sound Another example: when I wanted to join multiple TIFF images into a single multi-page tiff image, I thought I could do this: $ tiffcat < page-1.tiff page-2.tiff page-3.tiff page-4.tiff > pages.tiff And I was told no. Hi list, - on openSuSE11.1 all of a sudden at startup of KDE4 (Version 4.2.1 (KDE 4.2.1) "release 106"), I get this errorbox: KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed No, I didn't remove/do anything....and I have no sound. And sound works just fine in that other OS, you know...also Knoppix plays sound just fine. The dialogbox then gives me the chance for managing the devices - all are grayed out, no luck here. I get the message "No stream found to handle url dvd://1" in a dialog when trying to play a DVD in the graphic interface of mplayer (gmplayer). I can play the DVD without problem using the command line interface mplayer. (But before it would work I had to do this: sudo chmod u+s /usr/bin/mplayer) gmplayer's preferences have the video device /dev/dvd which is symbolically linked to /dev/sr0. I know the cause for this, my update repo is higher priority than the Mozilla repo but that is just crazy. Listmates, Curious. I've never really put my server under much of a load, but tonight with my dvd creation headaches creating ifo files, I decided to use the ifoedit under windows to see if that would work without demuxing, decoding the perfectly good vob files I had. I have xp as a guest under virtualbox, so from my laptop I used tightVNC to establish a remote session, fired up virtualbox, started xp allocating 2G to the gues, loaded ifoedit, and pressed the go button. It is working great, you just give it the starting vob file and it will step though the remaining vobs in the set creating new ifo files for you. Since processing video takes a while, I thought I would look at the load the server was under and started first with top. top showed 152%, then 157% then 160% and then bounced around between 150-160%. I guess that is due to the quad core and top probably handling 2 cores fine, but getting confused with 4. Anybody else see this? Does it need reporting? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] nvidia fan NOISE -- again .. initial temp causes loss of fan control

Listmates, Nvidia graphic card fan noise has always been an interesting challenge. I have run into it again, this time with a couple of new symptoms and I thought I would put this out to the collective wisdom of the group to see if any new solutions were available. Scenario One box has a msi k9n2 platinum board with a phenom 9850 processor and an evga 8800gt in it. I thought I would stick a spare 9600gt in it to compare specs (9600 being slightly faster in both core and memory clocks than the 8800 (700/950) compared to (650/800). When the 9600 was first booted (cold) all was fine, the fans spun up and made lots of noise until kdm was started (normal) and then fan control proceeded fine. Card temp hovered between 49-52 degrees. I booted the machine again to boot another OS and this time, the fans speed stayed at "launch" speed making all kinds of racket. The card temps were the same 49-52 degrees. WTF? For those with similar cards, you know how loud these fans can be. I went through the normal steps, installed nvclock, played with --fanspeed and nothing changed. It was like the fan was locked at 100% and stayed there no matter what --fanspeed was set to. I could change the --fanspeed parameter just fine and the software indication from "nvclock --info" changed accordingly, but there was No hardware effect at all. So I swapped the 8800 back in thinking I would try another cold boot with the 9600 after it cooled. (It wasn't that warm on removal, very comfortable to the touch even on the heat-sink). An hour or so later I booted the 9600 again and like the first time, it booted just fine and fan control proceeded just fine. However, if a reboot is needed, then the fan will stick and 100% again until then next time it is cold booted. I have experienced this behavior on both the 8800 and 9600 cards. The actual card temp doesn't seem to matter. If the card is the least bit warm on boot, the fan sticks at 100%. Does anybody know of a workaround for this problem?? (Yes, I know about the $60 Zalman solution) The problem is obviously driver related and how the initial card temp effects fan control on boot. Is there anywhere to report this information withing openSuSE (like some opensuse-nvidia group) or is this just something to feed back to nvidia? Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
