[opensuse] Gnome - where to configure shade/unshade by mouse wheel on titlebar?

Guys, I'm been using gnome a bit lately along with enlightenment and I kinda like gnome. Finding where all the settings are controlled (gconf,gnome-control-center, etc..) has been a challenge. I am stuck trying to figure out where or how I can configure the mouse-wheel to control shade/unshade when I am over the titlebar. [opensuse] nvidia-legacy with gf4 mx 440se on openSUSE 11.2

I tried to install nvidia legacy driver. I downloaded legacy (96.43.14) from nvidia website, then installed as usual. After restart X crashes during start. All logs are under links (nopaste site). Then I found in google, that "nopat" option added to kernel boot line might help. And it helped, X starts fine. What this option does? And why was necessary to add it to kernel line? [opensuse] architecture change using zypper

i have 32-bit oS 11.2 KDE 4.3.1 installed on a machine that can do 64-bit, and the performance is less than stellar i installed by downloading the 32-bit iso, burned it to DVD, and used it to boot/install (upgrading a 10.3 suse) i want to try with a 64-bit kernel, and with the newer KDE 4.3.4 now in STABLE, but i'm not sure how to get there from here when you download and burn the DVD from oS you get to choose between 32 and 64-bit, but looking at the repos i don't see a way to choose i had thought i could use zypper to remove repos, and add 64-bit repos, and perform a zypper dup to upgrade to 64-bit, but the repo URIs have no indication for architecture can i do this with zypper or do i have to upgrade using the 64- bit DVD? any help will be appreciated sc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] OT: linux on a rock club

Forgive me if this is WAY OT. A number of years ago i was investigating ways of setting up disk less machines for a project i had. I stumbled on to a web page from a guy that opened a rock club in (i think it was) Canada or US. the page nicely described the construction of both club, and server/clients on the computer system. It was complete with scripts, software and stuff. The pages themselves sported web cam coverage of the club 24/7, descriptions of the various permits needed to run a club, play music late hours, and serving alcohol. I'm installing 11.2 on a new Dell Inspirion laptop with a Broadcom 1397 wireless minicard, which I cannot get to work. The "Tracking Down Wireless Problems" indicates the need for firmware for this card, and (according to instructions) I ran "/usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware", which said it did so successfully. After reboot, no change. I made sure that the wireless care is turned on by the Bios. This is a dual boot with Windows 7, and the card works in windows. What should I try next? Hi, Has anyone been able to organise their bookmarks in Firefox? I ask it sort them by name, A > Z, but it stubbornly keeps them in the order they were added. They do get sorted *within* the Organiser, but not on the main Bookmarks menu. Hello: I have openSUSE 11.1 for testing. I updated it and now it can not boot. I tried to use openSUSE 11.1 installation DVD but it does not work either. [opensuse] KDE 4.3.4 login manager forgets settings after update?

Hello List, I'm usually setting login screen to display some nice image and clock and it worked OK in KDE3. Now I have 11.2 (x86) + KDE4.3.4. I disable theme greater, select "Show clock" in Dialog tab and enable background image and select some photo. I noticed that after KDE updates (KDE:/43 repository), login screen returns to default image and logo and when I go to login manager configuration again, I see "Show logo" and default background image selected. Not sure yet whether it happens after every update, probably not. But at least I've seen it 2-3 times. I searched novell bugzilla and KDE one, but have not seen such reports. Is there anybody on the list using this non-default login screen? Does it work for you? [opensuse] CTRL-ALT-F1 to F6 don't work after reboot

Weird thing - when I reboot my computer (which rarely ever happens) I cannot switch to tty1-6 because CTRL-ALT-F1 to F6 don't do anything. I use Gnome2 and GDM, and it already doesn't work in the GDM login screen. The only solution: ssh from another computer, init 3, wait, init 5, and then it works. Until the next reboot. What could that be? I've installed nfs-kernel-server nfs-kernel-server-1.1.3-21.1.x86_64 on 11.2. It's enabled chkconfig --list | grep nfs nfs 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off nfsserver 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off and configured as, cat /etc/sysconfig/nfs NFS_START_SERVICES="yes" USE_KERNEL_NFSD_NUMBER="3" NFS4_SUPPORT="no" MOUNTD_PORT="" REEXPORT_NFS="no" NFS_SECURITY_GSS="no" SM_NOTIFY_OPTIONS="" cat /etc/exports /usr/local/exports 192.168.1.7(ro,no_root_squash,sync,subtree_check) Everything works fine when I've set it up manually, but after each reboot, the dir is NOT exported. To get it to work, I have to exec twice, > exportfs -r exportfs: Warning: /usr/local/exports does not support NFS export. > exportfs -r > then, at this point, the dir can be subscribed/mounted at the client, 192.168.1.7. I am logged in from a remote machine from terminal(konsole) window. I would like to send message to the user so that the message would be visible for him. Is it possible in openSUSE? [opensuse] e16 ~/.e16/bindings.cfg - a few good keybindings

Guys, For those working with enlightenment e16, a few keybindings can really help. I've posted a few for iconfying windows, etc. before, but I've come up with a few more that are useful to me so I thought I would pass them along. First, basics, your keybindings are generally controlled by the system-wide file /usr/share/e16/config/bindings.cfg. To set up custom keybindings, simply copy the system-wide file to your ~/.e16 directory for modification. You can edit it by hand if you want to google while you work to figure out what it available, or simply install e16keyedit which will make like much easier. Just run it and it will pick up your ~/.e16/bindings.cfg by default. It's straight forward, the only thing I do is just remember to hit 'save' in between each key addition or key assignment. The keybinding I have set just give me a run dialog, the kwrite & kate editors, and firefox and thunderbird. You can configure anything you like. The basic form of the keybinding entry for running a program in e16 is: KeyDown <SCA> <key> exec program # where: <SCA> are the modifier keys Shift, Control or Alt; <key> is just the key you want to assign the program to; and program is just the executable name for the program you want to run ** You don't have to background the process (no &), it's done for you Here are the examples of the binding I set: KeyDown A semicolon exec bbrun -w -a KeyDown A backslash exec restart KeyDown A slash wop * shade KeyDown - Print exec ksnapshot KeyDown A Print exec ksnapshot --current KeyDown A Escape exec bbrun -w -a KeyDown A k exec kwrite KeyDown SA k exec kate KeyDown SA f exec firefox KeyDown SA t exec thunderbird ( I prefer 'bbrun' over 'fbrun' for the run dialog. I thought krunner would be overkill.) Note: if you do use bbrun, you MUST use the -w, --withdraw option. This causes bbrun to go straight to the command entry dialog. Otherwise you will have what looks like the systray wrapper window left on the screen after you execute a command and a good chance on locking up your desktop. (ctrl+f1; 'killall bbrun' will fix it if you happen to miss this first). Also, when selecting keys, make sure you choose keys that will not conflict with existing menu shortcuts, etc... p.s. - I know I have two bbrun commands defined above. [opensuse] KMail, automatic view of jpg attachments

At least since 11.1 email with jpg attachments were automatically shown under the mail. This was highly appreciated especially by my wife when she receives attached photo's from the family at times that I am not at home. She could have a look at the pictures without opening them in a picture viewer. In 11.2 I am still looking into the Settings/Configure KMail to get the pictures shown. Must have missed the settings because for the moment I only get a small pic with a balloon and the jpg file-name which I can of course click, in order to look at the pictures. Could somebody help me out? [opensuse] Changing the resolution of TV connected to HDMI

I am trying to configure a openSUSE 11.2 box as a HTPC, it has a ATI Radeon HD 3200 card in it. The only kind of display connected to it is my TV, connected through HDMI port, when I use the radeonhd driver then 800x600 and 1280x720 result in the same resolution which is to big for my TV so I end up with things off screen. When I use the fglrx driver then it configures my TV for 1920x540 which my TV can not do, it can only do up to 720p. So right now I am stuck with ether seeing a black screen because my TV can't handle the resoultion it is trying to do or have parts to the desktop/programs/what ever being off screen and the radeonhd drivers seem to be unable to do sound through the HDMI port as well. I now have on my notebook machine an installation of v11.2/KDE4need to install a dri, exactly in the condition in which it was installed from the DVD, but with the kernel source added. In order to go further (to update it and to install Enlighten with which to replace the KDE4), I need to install a driver for the NIC (RealTek r8166). I have the driver, and have extracted it from the archive in which it came: #tar -jxvf r8168-8.015.00.tar.bz2 and need now to compile it. [opensuse] skype aborting opensuse 11.2

Hi everyone, I'm a new, infrequent skype user. I installed it about two weeks ago and it seemed to work OK. I set up an account and tried the test call, etc. Yesterday, when I actually *needed* to use it, it wouldn't work. It would start, but the window would close after less than a second. From the command line, the only message was "Aborted". This happen both on my laptop (i586) and desktop (x86_64). I'm not sure what has changed in the last week or two to cause this. I haven't touched skype or its settings in that time. rpm -q skype skype-2.1.0.47-suse111.i586 which is the latest version available. I've searched on the web, but found no real hints, other than to try export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 which didn't help. I've tried removing the ~/.skype, but that did not help either. Guys, After the latest firefox updates, most of my themes were disabled and new themes would not install. After the automatic update check tried to install the Foxide Graphite theme, I found out why. During the install, I received a messages telling me that firefox would not install the theme because it did not provide a secure update path. Digging a little bit disclosed the following: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox Unsecured updating Firefox 3 and above: Starting in Firefox 3, if an add-on does not provide a secure method of auto-updating then, by default, Firefox will refuse to install the add-on. If you have add-ons already installed that are insecure in this way, they will be automatically disabled. [6] Add-ons from AMO (https://addons.mozilla.org/) and other secured sites are not a problem; for add-ons that do provide a secure updating method, advanced users can add the preference extensions.checkUpdateSecurity (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions.checkUpdateSecurity) and set it to false (not recommended). Hi, My mail-address at work is bombarded with replies on mails I never sent. I tried to analyse this, but the original sender is not the same, so it's kind of a DDOS. Any suggestions what to do ? I could remove that email-address, but that's not a real solution. I think there is nothing I can do, is it ? I thought I could avoid this in the future with DKIM, but that won't work, is it ? Since there is no signature, it can't be verified. Or do configured mailservers check nevertheless ? On openSUSE 11.2 and KDE4 (either 4.3.1 or 4.3.80) how do stop text shadows from appearing under desktop icons and in the YAWP plasmoid? I've grep'd for text and shadow under ~/.kde4/share/config with no luck. I can find just about everything else I could ever think of changing in system settings but nothing to do with text shadows. Some versions back it use to be in the konqueror settings of all things but it's not there (also checked the dolphin settings as well). Seeing as how a message I posted on 22 November has had no responses I thought I would post it again in to see if this time there may be someone who could comment on its contents. I've been using Firefox for some years. In recent years , when they became available, I've been using a variety of Extensions as 'security measures' - for example NoScript, AdBlock, etc. Recently there was a question raised by (?)..... concerning Adobe's Flash - and a, brief, discussion on the security problem posed by Flash ensued; this flowed on to the general question of how secure Linux/Linux distros was/were when it was mentioned that permissions could be altered by applications even within a normal user's home directory. However, this matter was not really properly answered, and not pursued further. Just a few minutes ago I was using Firefox and went to one (of many such sites) for which I have NoScript disallow javascript but, after deliberately allowing javascript for the site and its associated sites (eg, YouTube also wants you to allow javascript for ytimg.com) I can carry on and view any video-related material. OK, with YouTube, as one example, after I get to the point of clicking on the ">" to play the video, I usually also get another request from NoScript to allow "something" to be able to continue to view the video. In the past I automatically, and in an irritated state, clicked, "YES", to simply get on and view the video. But just now I had a closer look at what I had previously been simply accepting without paying any attention to it. What the last "warning" which NoScript was asking me to allow was, "Allow about:blank" - which I was always in the past auto. accepted. I know what "about:plugins" and "about:config" show when I type these in the URL window in Firefox. But "about:blank"? This time I typed in "about:blank" in the URL windows.....and got, "Search Bookmarks and History". Now, as everyone who knows me, I am not a paranoid person ("In a pig's bum I'm not!") so what is this all about? Hello, Several svn clients are suddenly getting "svn: Malformed file" errors when checking out from the repos. From the host server, command 'svnadmin verify /svnrepos' doesn't return any errors. Hi, I'm running 11.2. I just noticed on every box I have, root /root > crontab Permission denied You (root) are not allowed to access to (crontab) because of pam configuration. And in syslog, Dec 16 13:03:40 desk2 crontab: PAM _pam_load_conf_file: unable to open /etc/pam.d/password-auth Dec 16 13:03:40 desk2 crontab: PAM _pam_load_conf_file: unable to open /etc/pam.d/password-auth I've certainly never set any PAM config, or anything. On 11.1 I had no such problems. checking cron's man page, it references the pam man page. Checking the pam & PAM man pages, there's no mention of cron :-/ What's PAM got to do with cron, and how do I get permission to access it? The GX260 with the Intel graphics works with 11.1, that's what I have at work along with several with old ati and nvidia cards. It was around this time last year when the Intel didn't work on the 11.0 to 11.1 upgrade so in a panic I bought a batch of old cards from e-bay. Then opensuse released an xorg patch around Februatry and all was well with the onboard Intel again, the ones that still worked that is. What I have at home is a GX260 with an old riva tnt in one of the slots. It's not Intel as I last said. [opensuse] iptables MASQUERADE problems with oss 11.2

The setup involved in this issue was working perfectly fine with oss 10.X and 11.1. The problem arose after an in-place upgrade to oss 11.2. Basically the machine (call it machine A with internal IP address 192.168.10.10) is configured to do masquerade via iptables (with a custom script). The relevant line is: $IPTABLES -t mangle -A PREROUTING -m iprange --src-range 192.168.10.50-192.168.10.200 -j MARK --set-mark 2 $IPTABLES -t mangle -A FORWARD -m iprange --src-range 192.168.10.50-192.168.10.200 -j MARK --set-mark 2 $IPTABLES -t nat -A POSTROUTING -m mark --mark 2 -o comcast1 -j MASQUERADE Once this is in place, initiating (for example) ping www.yahoo.com from a machine with ip address 192.168.10.52 shows that traffic is making it's way to machine A on A's internal interface, then the traffic is getting "masqueraded" (packets source ip gets changed to the valid public address of machine A) and sent out the interface called comcast1, reply comes back from www.yahoo.com and enters machine A properly on interface comcast1 and that's it ... the packet never gets mapped back to the inside host that sent it. I see this sequence of events in a packet capture btw (Wireshark with capture on pseudo-interface to capture all interfaces). This exact same script worked fine with oss11.1 and earlier versions - is anyone here aware of any changes in oss11.2 that could prevent something like this from working? I'm trying to use Open Office on Windows 7. I assume it works the same way on Linux. How do I make it use curly apostrophes and curly quotes, like I used to be able to do in WordPerfect? I am writing and editing material for a newsletter, and I need the capability. I know that M/S Word can be made to do this, but I don't know how, since I have never used it. [opensuse] gmonstart / jvregisterclasses in tons of binaries with commands,malware?

In linux binaries, in any linux distro, I've discovered the same strings which I believe may be due to a virus or trojan. Yet, clamav, rkhunter, chkrootkit do not detect abnormalities. Whether I run 'strings' on the binary files or view with vim or gedit, here is what is always seen inside the binaries: __gmon_start__ _Jv_RegisterClasses Followed by commands which differ within each binary. If, by some luck, I've downloaded a fresh Linux ISO where binaries do not include the above two strings followed by commands, after I run an update the updated binaries suddenly contain the above two strings and other, what I believe to be, rogue strings. I've avoided the possible infection with an OpenBSD install, yet all the Linux installations and burned ISOs contain binaries with the above two strings followed by commands. Search using find within your bin and sbin directories for those two strings and see how many positives you find. Now use a text editor like vi or gedit and search through the gibberish, locate these strings and isolate the commands, if any, which follow them. Searching for gmonstart, gmon, registerclasses, jv, etc. variations of works. If you find results in your binaries, please copy/paste the commands following the gmonstart and jvregisterclasses strings so I may compare them to mine. I've purchased Linux CDs from brick + mortar stores, downloaded ISOs from different physical locations and found some CDs contained these strings in the binaries and one or two rare ones did not, but when installed/updated on a network connection the binaries replaced in the update process would show these strings!! These strings are not alone by themselves in the binaries they follow with commands with a @ mark before each command. Google results are vague, some suggest shell backdoors, every Linux user I've asked to date calls me paranoid while at the same time this knowledge comes as a surprise to them, too, when they search their binaries and find the same strings. I'm amazed by how quickly some rush to judgement and call you a paranoid for being curious about the files on your system. The strings may/may not be common, but in comparing commands which follow these strings I've noticed some which seem down right malicious! Maybe they're right, I'm just paranoid, but what am I seeing and why are these strings so common across Linux distros binaries, esp. the Jv (java?) reference? [opensuse] loaded mplayer and the sound is gone

I downloaded with zhypper mplayer/ and now the sound is gone. Nothing I've tried, either in yast or alsa seems to get it running. I suspect the issue has to do with the pulse audio. I have a Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) sound card which worked just fine in opensuse 9.2 and works in Memphis. I'm really at a loss here and very fustrated. [opensuse] USB irda and my dive computer

Hey all... I am trying to get my dives off a UWATEC Aladin Prime. I am running the smarttrak software using wine, and although it has some graphics problems it seems to be running correctly. However it can find the dive computer. When I tried to set up irda in Yast, all it gave me for choices were /dev/ttyS1 .. 3, which didn't work. So..... Any ideas? [opensuse] updates failing

Hi all, My system runs: Linux Linux-A105 2.6.25.20-0.5-pae #1 SMP 2009-08-14 01:48:11 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux and something has gotten jammed in the updates and software management system. If I try to run the package manager, I get a complaint that says "Another process is accessing the package database. Package management cannot be used now" This, as you probably guessed, isn't true. My inference is that some lock file didn't get cleaned up a while back and should be manually deleted. Can anyone tell me what and where that lock file might be?
