[opensuse] Network Printing to Active Directory

One thing I've never been quite able to get working from my laptops is network printing. I have openSUSE 10.3 right now on a given laptop. (Another one is in the box, ready to be installed with 11.0 or possibly SLED.) I am on the corporate network in that I have a DHCP lease on an IP address and get through to the intraweb on all available ports. I can also use konqueror to connect remote shares using smb://username@ip.address/share Now, I want to print to the various network printers we have. I've looked and cannot seem to get a straight answer. [opensuse] KDE 4.1

Opensuse 11 with kde 4.1 (now)...And still very disappointed in kde 4.1. Widgets still don't work. Still can't copy stuff to the desktop without using a file manager. Still can't right click something on the desktop and "send to trash". Still kontact does not work right for me (connection times out). Ark still does not work right...And on and on and on. I usually stay quiet about this but i thought with 4.1 things were going to be different (at least some). Just so i make sure i am updating from the right repo, i update using http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openS…. [opensuse] HPET and SuSE 10.3

Hi All, I have followed and implemented the postings of lockups on this distro and number 11 and still I suffer from some form of lockup. Running an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ with 2 gig of memory. 2 IDE hard drives, 1 IDE DVD-RW and 1 SATA DVD-RW. All this is on an ASUS M2V-MX motherboard. Running the Default Kernel 2.6.22.18-0.2. After Googling and reading the post here and still getting the lockups I thought maybe its something to do with the HPET which my other PC has in the bios and Vista won't run properly without it. I read on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPET that the Kernel of 2.6 also requires the HPET to be turned on in the bios. This motherboard does not have HPET. So I can not turn it on. Is anyone on the list running 10.3 or 11.0 without HPET turned on in the bios ? Is anyone running any of the above distros without HPET in the bios ? If so how are you getting around rtc-cmos which again is mentioned in the wikipedia page ? [opensuse] (SOLVED) Network Printing to Active Directory

A few days back I had asked how to go about printing to AD in a Wintendo environment from my (not part of the domain) laptop. I found the answer. First off, I had been trying to print using SMB. This works for my home 'network' and I can print to my wife's Win2K computer using smb://192.168.0.101/lilly without a problem. In setting up my local Vista workstation, I had an issue, though. For some reason, smb printing does not work in the corporate world. However, this is still a non-issue. I just needed to figure out what to do. This page - http://www.swerdna.net.au/linhowtosambaprint.html - gave me the answer. I use ipp or Internet printing protocol. In the case of the vista workstation, I had forgotten to enable TCP/IP printing in Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. In there, you enable LPD print services and LPR port monitor. This then lets me print using lpd as the protocol in CUPS: lpd://10.16.15.74/lj1320 That's lpd://ip.address.of.machine/shared_printer_name_with_no_spaces. As for the network printers - in the first case, I was trying to print using smb://username\password@server/printer. That doesn't fly. According to the page referenced above, I needed to use IPP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Printing_Protocol) to print. I have always preferred IBM java to Sun's. When I look in /usr/lib/jvm, I see all these symlinks within the directory and also to /etc/alternatives. How can I make IBM java the default for all these? [opensuse] Desktop Wierdness

My mother (openSUSE 10.3 32-bit 1G RAM) calls me today and says I messed with her fonts when I did an update on Sunday. (I often run the updater manually when we go over for dinner on Sundays.) I went over this evening and saw that (a) her desktop icons are all gone and (b) her fonts are wacky. For example, see the enclosed screen. On reading mail the font is large and bold. [opensuse] USB Problem

System ASUS Motherboard, P4, 4GB Memory, 2 320GB Sata drives, 2 DVD Drives, IDE. openSUSE 11.0, ( linux 2.6.25.11-0.1-pae #1 SMP 2008-07-13 20:48:28) Dual boot opensuse 11.0 and openSUSE 10.3. Yesterday I added a new drive (USB) { actually120GB IDE drive in shuttle that converts it to USB. Purpose was a drive to back my data too. The drive was recognized and I displaced and cleared old data off it. I then used the YaST partitioner to create two partitions, 75GB mount point /linuxbackup and 25GB mount point /windowsbackup. I then right clicked each icon and did a remove safely since there was no unmount option. That is how i do it with my Scandisk thumb drive. Then shutdown and rebooted,system keep going to the root login then, repair mode. kept getting message superblock bad magic.on the drive I had just removed, tried fsck as suggested by the message using backup super block. no luck fixing. Finally tried booting into 10.3 and that worked. went back to 11.0 installation --> boot loader, installed new boot loader and rebooted and system came back up. My questions are what is the correct way to shut this USB disk down so I do not have to install a new boot loader each time? Should my mount point be /media/disk instead (thats what the thumb drive does)? I know if I do not disconnect the thumb drive before shutting down, it does not boot up correctly. Any help or pointers will be appreciated.
