[opensuse]KDE4 - What people like/dislike about it

Since everyone seems to be just bashing KDE4(which I am guilty of) or raving about it, I thought I would post what I don't like about KDE4: 1. It's SLOW! - KDE4 is "supposed" to be faster and require less resources than KDE3.x. WRONG! I am running KDE v3.5.9 on this Thinkpad 390X(P3/500 Neomagic 256 w/ 2.5MB VRAM) and it was VERY SLOW. I also have it on my Celeron DC system(E1200 OC'd to 3.2Ghz) with an ATI X300(PCIe) and it's definately slower on that system than KDE3. Do I need some new video card to make this faster statement true? And if so, WHY? 2. It's too Vista-like! - If I wanted Vista, I would run it. Having icons "jump" at me and do strange things isn't what I expect out of KDE. I've used KDE since SuSE v5.3, and this "change" is in the wrong direction, IMHO. 3. It's not Complete - People continue to point this out. If it's not complete, then WHY is it that there is only a KDE4 liveCD? That makes no sense. 4. The KDE4 versions of a lot of stuff are way too different. - As an example, look at how different even the games like Mahjongg look. I stand by what I have experienced - KDE4 is just not good enough right now, and I really don't understand this huge push to make it work. Anyone who disagrees, please feel free to show me the error of my ways. But, so long as it runs slower on my CHOICE of hardware, then I see no benefit to using it. [opensuse] Where is my Thunderbird...

Hi, I installed thunderbird on my openSuse 11. I can't seem to find an entry for it in : Applications ---> Internet ---> Email. I have run thunderbird from command line for now. [opensuse] KDE font(?) problems

I recently installed Kompare onto my 10.2 box and noticed that my splash screen is messed up. Specifically, all characters appear as boxes, even the menu items. Yet once I login, everything looks fine. Anyone seen this or know how to fix it? I'd think a re-install of one of the kde rpms might fix it, just don't know which one or how to without deleting and re-installing. Alternatively, it could be INSTALLED_LANGUAGES which is blank. [opensuse] smartlink-softmodem for Suse 11

is there such a package and if so where does it live, can only find it for 10.3 but it's causes dependency problems. I need to test a dialup connection and will struggle without it. If I try to configure the Modem it tells me that I need to install the package but it's not on the mirrors. [opensuse] I cannot listen to any sound!

After rebooting and doing anything at all, sound does not work. It seems that pulseaudio is the new "engine" for alsa, and I do not know how to turn volume on. Test in yast2 doesn't work anymore. All multimedia apps turns on but with no sound. [opensuse] Bacula 2.4.0 repositories: Status?

Hi Group, Still on the way to trying to install a virtual machine under opensUSE 11.0, with a detour via Bacula... Does anyone have any experience with the Bacula 2.4.0 builds that are on the build service, I'm using MySQL and the descriptions of what they contain is a little sketchy, its not clear if they are stable, being developed. I've played with installing some of them and they conflict with each other but all in different ways. Or is it best to to down load and build? [opensuse] Kerberos Schema unknown by LDAP server

Hi. I'm trying to setup kerberos to use LDAP as backend but I'm getting the "Kerberos Schema unknown by LDAP server", I have included the schema to my configuration file and restarted the server. slapd.conf: include /etc/openldap/schema/core.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/cosine.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/inetorgperson.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/rfc2307bis.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/yast.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/dnszone.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/suse-mailserver.schema include /etc/openldap/schema/krb5-kdc.schema LDAP server is up and running and I can connected to it. krb5-kdc.schema file was included in the default installation I had to get from http://www.bayour.com/openldap/schemas/krb5-kdc.schema. [opensuse] problem with kde4 based players..

Hi! I installed recently SUSE 11.0 on my computer. The installation succeded. Until now I was using SUSE 10.3 and all my developed applications worked well under this (and earlier) distribution. I developed, among others, some applications using the OmNet++, a discret event simulation environment. The problem occured when I tryed to compile and install OmNet++, since it is using TCL/TK package and an extension of it: the BLT packages. The installation reveals that the problem resides in SUSE 11.0 distribution. Executing /usr/bin/bltsh or /usr/bin/bltsh24 you get the following message: >/usr/bin/bltsh application-specific initialization failed: version conflict for package "Tcl": have 8.5.2, need exactly 8.5 The distribution contains a version of blt2.4z (351.1) that seems to be incompatible with the TCL 8.5.2-15.1 (I tested the OmNeT++ installation by downloading the older TCL/TK 8.5.0 versions and there are no errors.) Does somebody know how to solve the problem? Some patches ? The matter is urgent for me, and I would appreciate a quick answer. Thank you very much in advance.
