[opensuse] opensuse 11.0 display power management

Folks, I notice display power management no longer seems to work now that I upgraded to 11.0, when it worked fine with 10.3! Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas how to fix it? [opensuse] Is there a way to read data from a hdd, with a worm eaten bootsector?

Hi, Unfortunately my networkdrive became unaccessible, due to some worm, that has eaten parts of the bootsector. This drive contains my whole movie and music DB, all my photoos and apps that i wanted to keep. I know that the real data is unaffected, but do not know how to get it off that drive, and onto some other media, like DL-DVD's.. Does anyone have a clue? For information: Yes, it was used in a network, where there are also windows PC's and laptops, it had a samba server, and an ftp server. And no, a virus scanner could not access the drive anymore.. I noticed some strange signs, that have replaced the normal letters, and in a few restarts, no access was possible anymore. iirc, there is a way of reading the disk, passing by the bootsector in some way, but i don't remember the routine.... It cann't be mounted anymore, i used an enclosure directly on the drive: ide to usb, but it cann't be recognised anymore.. If somebody knows a way to get to the data, i would be very pleased to hear it. It is some 210GB, on a 250GB drive. -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (Now or never...) [opensuse] Old DEC fanatics

I think there are a couple of die-hard DEC users on here. I just saw that AdvFS has been opensourced. http://advfs.sourceforge.net/ I haven't used it in close to 10 years, but I used to think that was a great filesystem. If this gets ported to Linux, it will be one more true enterprise class FS for linux. Nice to see them still coming. [opensuse] DVD-Writer/ROM speed limit

Hi all, I have a "damaged" DVD that starts wobbling in the drive when it spins up to be read. Is there is way to limit die DVD drive to only read at 1x speed? [opensuse] Virtual machine software options?

Hi, Last year, when I was using WindowsXP, I used VMWare Workstation to run another installation of XP as a guest - primarily to simplify changing machines. I'd like to establish the same setup using openSUSE. I'm currently using openSUSE 10.2. What I'd like to do: - Install a openSUSE 11.0 guest on my current machine. - Move my /home contents to this guest, configure the guest - When the guest is 'the way I need it', backup the guest and do a fresh install of openSUSE 11.0 (possibly 11.1 by then) - Copy the guest over, and resume work... What are the linux VMWare equivalents? Is there a generally acknowledged best-of-breed? Any comments on the advisability of this approach? Specifically: - What cpu, disk and network performance price is to be paid, e.g 10% cpu cost, etc.? I would appreciate any insights or comments. [opensuse] ODF files on SMB/CIFS share

I have some XLS and ODT files on a Windows AD server (CIFS share). When openning the XLS files using KIO (Konq or Krusader with smb://) OpenOffice pops up and asks for a Win domain password (which I give) and everything opens as expected. When I do the same for the ODT file I get get an OpenWith popup from KDE. If I navigate to Calc it works. When copying the file to the local drive it works as expected; so the file associations is fine. Whats going on? Manne ps. is there is way to tell OpenOffice to get my Win domain password from KDE or Kerberos or where-ever.
