[opensuse] What's the best approach for "submitting" patches?

I've just this afternoon spotted a problem in the spamd init script - it's easily fixed, and I could easily create a patch. I am mostly unfamiliar with building RPMs and the build service and such, so I tend towards just opening a bugreport and be done with it. This would be true assuming you can use such cables only and really only to connect a printer and that the printer would actually identify itself on the Parallel port (there are not to many doing this). But there are as well other usecases than connecting a printer on a parallel port... think about data links (not that common anymore, but still existing). <rant mode> So I guess I installed a kernel update yesterday. Suddenly, when trying to connect to work tonight, I was unable to (a) launch VirtualBox to load Vista (in order to use the Cisco VPN client within a VM) and then (b) failing that I was unable to launch the ciscovpn client. [opensuse] (openSUSE 11.0) Recommended PCI Parallel card for old style printer?

Hi, Have just got a system back after a SATA connection snapped off the M/board. Unfortunately the m/board could not be salvaged and was replaced with a board with an Intel core 2 Dui processor. The motherboard chipset is: Intel 945GC + 1CH7 and its model is the 945GCT-M2/13333 V1.0A. Having a look on the manufacturers website for the board http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?CategoryID=1&… it is noticed that the board does not have a printer LPT port, as I noted when I tried to connect the parallel cable. Further searching reveals that the 945GCT-M# (v3.0) model does has an LPT connection. If I cannot get the PC shop to replace the board with the LPT one, is there a PCI card that is compatible with openSUSE 11.0 that will provide at least 1 LPT port for a HP LaserJet 5L? I have had a look on the openSUSE HCL as well as on Google for 'pci parallel card' and have been unable to find anything. Your help would definitelty be appreciated especially as I have just spent close to R3500 on updating this box, only to find it is now short on features. [opensuse] Default Printer Based On Network

I have googled this and found many answers for how to script this in Wintendo, but not so much that's clear on how do do this in Linux (or openSUSE). I am writing this on my laptop - openSUSE 10.3/32-bit KDE 3.5 - system. I use it for work both at work in my office and at my home office. At work, I print usually to an HP LaserJet 1310 I have in my office. I also occasionaly print to a workgroup printer such as one of our color laserjets or a high speed b&w printer. At home, I print to my wife's OfficeJet, connected via Samba to her Win2K computer. I want to have the system auto-switch my default printer in KDE/CUPS based on teh IP Address of where the compuer is. Though I use DHCP at work, my first two octets are always the same - 1.2.x.x - and I have a fixed IP at home - 192.168.0.102. anyone have experience with latest high end HP color lasers like HP Color LaserJet CP4005dn Printer? I want duplex printing & lot's of memory. [opensuse] postfix memory usage in 32bit vs 64bit

Just an interesting observation - well, I think it is :-) I run a lot of postfix on both 32bit and 64bit hardware. For testing, I started installing opensuse 64bit version on a couple of new production servers. After a while, I noticed that memory usage had risen sharply - a postfix smtpd daemon would have a memory footprint of virt=27M, res=5M. With a couple of hundred smtpd daemons, that adds up, and I ended up having to add more swap space. These daemons are often just waiting for a timeout, they don't actually do a lot, so they're swapped out. Well, I've now reinstalled the same servers with 32bit openSUSE 11.0, and saw a significant reduction in memory usage. The only difference here is in software, the config is exactly the same. Listmates, I ran a comparison on an old file server just to check disk performance of the backup machine. I compared it to a new machine and the difference validates Mohr's law: [AMD K62-450 w/2 20G IBM Deskstar 7200 rpm drives] sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 72 MB in 2.00 seconds = 35.94 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 26 MB in 3.09 seconds = 8.41 MB/sec [AMD Phenom 9850 w/2 500G Seagates in RAID1] /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 3504 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1751.75 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 188 MB in 3.02 seconds = 62.33 MB/sec /dev/sdb: Timing cached reads: 3494 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1746.89 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 200 MB in 3.01 seconds = 66.53 MB/sec /dev/dm-0: Timing cached reads: 3432 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1716.32 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 194 MB in 3.02 seconds = 64.27 MB/sec The Software RAID penalty -- virtually non-existent as far as hdparm is concerned.
