[opensuse] (openSUSE 11.0) Recommended PCI Parallel card for old style printer?
Hi, Have just got a system back after a SATA connection snapped off the M/board. Unfortunately the m/board could not be salvaged and was replaced with a board with an Intel core 2 Dui processor. The motherboard chipset is: Intel 945GC + 1CH7 and its model is the 945GCT-M2/13333 V1.0A. Having a look on the manufacturers website for the board http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?CategoryID=1&TypeID=32&DetailID=827&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=1&LanID=0 it is noticed that the board does not have a printer LPT port, as I noted when I tried to connect the parallel cable. Further searching reveals that the 945GCT-M# (v3.0) model does has an LPT connection. If I cannot get the PC shop to replace the board with the LPT one, is there a PCI card that is compatible with openSUSE 11.0 that will provide at least 1 LPT port for a HP LaserJet 5L? I have had a look on the openSUSE HCL as well as on Google for 'pci parallel card' and have been unable to find anything. Your help would definitelty be appreciated especially as I have just spent close to R3500 on updating this box, only to find it is now short on features. In a similar position, I decided to try a USB to parallel cable. It worked out of the box. Just connect the printer to a USB port with this cable and SUSE did the rest. Perhaps I was lucky and just happened to get a cable that worked. But I think there are not so many chipsets for this. Tnx for the quick reply. What is the name/model of the USB-Parallel device as maybe I can get one in Douth Africa? Tnx Hylton -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That reply won't be as quick. I bought it at a local gadget store. They sell rather generic hardware usually made in China, labelled with the name of the store, and typically little else. In my case, it's a Prolific Technology PL2305 that I bought over the Net. When I put my Windows restore partition back onto my laptop a couple of weeks ago, it wiped my hard drive clean (!!), and the order info was among the things I hadn't gotten around to backing up yet. Google found it for me; the search term was something like "usb centronics", as I recall. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just did the same. I had no issues at all. Cost $12.00 US. John Perry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Which sum would you like to bet on "all work out of the box"? Before you risk too much of your money, have a look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264219#c1 But a small amount of your money as a donation to an open source project you like is probably welcome. Well, when I go to Vegas, I really should just deposit all my money at the door and get it over with. I was hoping the odds here were better. I'm an optimist. Except when I'm not... I see the report is for SUSE 10.2. It worked for me with 10.3. So, maybe it was fixed? I cannot say anything about 11.0. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. How should CUPS (or whatever software on the computer) be fixed when the root cause of the problem in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264219 is that the USB to parallel cable there did not report the connected printer as a USB printer? If the cable reports it as a USB printer, the software on the computer where the stuff is connected to via USB will detect is as USB printer and then everything can work out of the box. If the cable is dumb, how could any software on the computer detect what there is connected at the other end of the cable? In this case the workaround described in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264219#c1 should usually help but I guess there are totally broken USB to parallel cables out there where only a special driver software only for whatever special operating system would make such totally broken USB to parallel cables work. I did not get that from the description. I read is as though the USB level had changed the name of the device and CUPS did not recognize these names. Perhaps the problem was not the cable, but the driver for the cable? A newer kernel could have sorted the issue. I do not know. All I know was I was pleasantly surprised that the cable 'just worked'. I bought it for use with my daughter's Windows laptop (I confess...). I just hooked it up to my Linux Laptop to see what would happen. With no more effort on my part, I was printing. Really. It is taking all the mystique out of Linux. My friends are less impressed with me these days. Damn these smart Linux distros!

So you mean that a USB<->Centronics cable does not tell it is such a cable? G'd forbid:) That is what the garbage can was designed for.

Yep. Linux does prefer hardware that does what it says on the label. Such an unreasonable request, no? -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Thank you all for the comments. I went out today to my local PC store and purchased a Dynex USB parallel cable to plug into the USB port on the PC and 'old style' printer port on my HP LaserJet 5L. For the R100/$10 it cost it is not a train smash if it doesn't work with this cheap workaround. Will report back if I succeed in printing, once I have the system installed. I purchased one of these about a month ago for around $25 (Canadian). It works just fine with 11.0 and an HP laserjet 4MP. I don't even remember the brand, it was pretty generic. I'll have a look at home tonight if your interested. Any PCI card with an LPT port ought to work. The first one I pulled out of one of my junk boxes just now is a SIIG Galaxy 2L. 94V-O.

I think a better long term option for your fine old printer is a JetDirect card. Most old HP printers can accept them, and printer sharing is easier with the printer directly on the network. You should be able to find a compatible one used for cheap somewhere. http://h20338.www2.hp.com/hpsub/cache/342521-0-0-225-121.html Devices that function the same but don't depend on particular models for compatibility are also available. Just plug the printer's LPT or USB port into the box, and plug the box into your network. I keep the LPT ports disabled on all the puters I have that have them. -- "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." James 1:19 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg.
