[opensuse] Remote upgrade problem

Hi, I've a lot of servers in a remote DC that I've no physical access to, they're running 10.2. I wish to upgrade them to 11.0 remotely, but for some reason it's not working correctly. Firstly I've been downloading the install kernel and initrd: cd /boot wget -O vmlinuz.install ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/boot/i386/lo… wget -O initrd.install ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/boot/i386/lo… Then adding an entry into Grub: title Boot -- SUSE LINUX 11.0 root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz.install noapic usessh=1 sshpassword="12345678" install=ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.0/repo/oss hostip=xx.xx.xx.xx netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=xx.xx.xx.xx nameserver=xx.xx.xx.xx initrd /boot/initrd.install then using grubonce 1 to make it use that entry on next boot. Now the machine boots up and starts the network, I can ping it. But it never starts the installation program, so I'm assuming that it's because for whatever reason it's unable to download it. I'm doing this blind as I've no access other than SSH and there's no-one to plug in a monitor/KVM so I can see the output. As all the details are correct and I can use wget on the URL and download the files using the DNS server specified I'm thinking it's possibly because it's trying to use the wrong NIC. The machine has an internal card (eth0) and a PCI gigabit one (eth1), I'm thinking that as I'm using the latter, grub is trying to use the other despite there not being a connection to it (I know it start the network with the correct device as I can ping it, but I've run out of other ideas). I've done this remote upgrade method loads of times before without problem, the only thing I can see different here is the 2NIC's. If this is plausible is there a command to specify which device it should use? [opensuse] HPLIP and ink status

I have noticed that HPLIP (HP Device Manager) does not show the status of the ink levels if the cartridges have been refilled. [opensuse] Automated installation of VMware Workstation 6.5

Hi, With versions of VMware Workstations up to 6.0.5 it was possible to automate the installation by using a prepared /etc/vmware/locations and running vmware-config.pl --default EULA_AGREED=yes With version 6.5 this is no longer possible because the vmware-config.pl does no longer exist and the installer wants confirmation for EULA agreement. The attached shell script does an automated installation with predefined subnets vor vmnet1 and vmnet8. It is tested on openSUSE 11.0. Hope this helps someone not to waste a whole day for this. [opensuse] Mac HD in x86 system?

fdisk -l tells me no valid partition table. I took the HD out of a Mac that won't boot to desktop, thinking the problem may be an overstuffed disk that simply needs some disk cleanup, and mounted it as sole device on the #2 PATA controller as /dev/sdc. Don't Mac disks use a GPT, similar to recent Vista systems? Is this doable somehow in x86 11.0 or Factory? -- "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." [opensuse] Real-world Transfered Speed over 100tx Network

Listmates, What are the real-world transfer speeds you are seeing with rsync SuSEbox-to-SuSEbox over a 100TX network? As files get larger, the backup/transfer times keep rising. I am seeing transfer rates for gigabyte size files of 11.04 MB/s over the network. A comparison to drive-to-drive transfers within the same 10.3 box are about 28 MB/s. I wouldn't expect box-to-box transfers to be the same as drive-to-drive transfers, but losing 60% seems large. That maybe normal, but I thought I would ask and see what others are seeing. [opensuse] Exim and DKIM

I'm using exim on opensuse 10.3 and I'd like to set up DKIM signing and checking. The documentation for exim's DKIM support is a little... err... sparse, and I can't find any mention of using DKIM with exim on opensuse at all. Does any know if any of the pre-built versions of exim for opensuse 10.3 support DKIM? I'd rather not build it all from scratch if I don't have to. [opensuse] hardware report: 11.0 is OK on MSI K9N2 SLI PLATINUM AM2+

Listmates: Just a quick hardware report. openSuE 11.0 (kde 3) installed and updated quite well on a MSI K9N2 SLI PLATINUM AM2+ with an AMD Phenom 9850 (125W) with 4G OCZ Platinum PC2-8500 and evga e-GeForce 8800GT. All hardware was detected and configured out of the box. Only 2 issues encountered: (1) openSuSE nVidia one-click install failed to write an xorg.conf requiring a sax2 -m 0=nvidia manual conf (this hasn't been required with other nvidia one-clicks I've done; and (2) Yast->Network Device failed to restart eth0 after network card setup. Other hardware note: If you do buy a MSI K9N2 SLI PLATINUM AM2+, _do not_ attempt to configure the BIOS and use the new "save user settings" feature until you have flashed the BIOS to version 3.2. (you will guarantee a fried BIOS). The 3.2 BIOS cures the problem: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no… The board runs fantastically fast. Full 7 Gig. DVD install in less that 30 minutes. Processor runs very, very cool even under load (CPU temp 28-30 degrees, board temp 30 degrees) (Arctic Silver instead of standard thermal pad due to RMA) The BIOS and chipset work extremely well with the 8800GT fan control (virtually NO fan noise at all). (contrast will prior posts about the 8800GT sounding like it was attempting vertical take-off in another box) Even with relatively new hardware 11.0 and kde3 was up to the test, compiz 0.7.8 and all.
