I used to have to select 'factory reset' from the menu and it would correct itself. In my case, I was able to setup 'profiles' on my monitor. I do believe the ViewSonic VP920b supports 'profiles'. If this is the case you might want to go that route. If not, the auto-adjust or reset should do the trick. Installing OpenSuse 10.2 I did not see nothing on my screen, so I change connection from DVI to analog and saw the installation program. Completed the installation and notice the desktop image was moved towards the right. From the LCD menu I gave it the option: Digital, and was restored to its position. I have to do this everytime I log in. Is there any solution to this? [opensuse] LVM and fsck failure on boot

And things were going so well... I'm trying to create an LVM volume using YAST and recycling some of my older, smaller hard drives. These drives are in USB housings on /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. The LVM creation process goes fine, as far as I can tell: I partition both drives as LVM partitions, add them to the Volume Group, and set up the mount point in fstab. At this point, the volume shows up under df, is fully accessible, and I start loading it with files. Everything works fine. As long as I keep the computer on, I can read/write to the volume all day. But, if I reboot the computer, the boot process halts with an fsck error on the LVM, and I can't get fsck to run a check on it -- I keep getting "please run fsck manually" messages, but that's what I'm *trying* to do. In the end, the only way I can get through boot is to remove the LVM from fstab and reboot. After which, I haven't been able to figure out a way to re-mount the volume manually. So far, I've tried ext2, ext3, and reiser, all with the same results, so I don't think it's the file system. [opensuse] mounting anomaly

Hi All, For those of you who recall my router and 10.0 system being hacked into some time ago (root logins enabled via ssh; weak passwords all around,) which I repaired by installing 10.2 from scratch then emptying out what was '/' for 10.0... emptied as in erased, not formatted... well... I'm finally able to recover that disk space and put it back into service. One problem, though: it won't mount normally... keeps turning the mount point directory green in my shell. Hi list, I am trying to access a sqlite3 file with php5, but I get the error: Warning: sqlite_open() [function.sqlite-open]: file is encrypted or is not a database I can open that file (its a digikam db) with knoda. For the test I gave the file and its folder rw rights for everybody. My script starts with: <?php $dbname='tst/tstdigikam3.db'; if (!$db = sqlite_open($dbname, 0666, $err) ) die("OpenFehler: $err"); ... Any idea what I am doing wrong? [opensuse] php5: dynamic extensions in php.ini?

Hi :-) I finally upgraded from php4 to php5. When I compared my old php.ini to the new one, I saw that the "dynamic extension" are not listed anymore in the new one. Is it advisable to list the installed extensions there? Should I just add all modules that are listed in /usr/lib/php5/extensions ? Oh, and, I thought, these files were named like "mysql.so" but all files in that directory don't have any file name extension??? I am working on Suse 10.0. Apache, mysql, php... are only for local use. thanks for your hints. [opensuse] Screensaver Wierdness

Running OpenSuSE 10.2 (Boxed Set) and Gnome/Screensaver that came with it. The screensaver sometimes works and sometimes not, apparently at random. I haven't seen any comments on this so I'm wondering if I'm the only one with the problem. Is that the case or is it a known reported bug? This note may help users trying to install SuSE 10.2. This new version of SuSE is very stable, fast, the pack manger works very well, mythtv install with few clicks and works very well. I found almost all positive but because I could not have the dvd burner working with growisofs / wodim /k3b I had to go back to SuSE 10.1. I spent almost a month trying to work on different problems and most solved. Since SuSE 9.0 64 I have never spent so much time to install SuSE. Most could have been solved with a small note in the SuSE 10.2 release notes. --------------- Ref: MSI K8N Neon4 amd fx-55 (64) ide1: Sony ait tape drive as master. Nothing as slave ide2: cd/dvd player as master, cd/dvd +rw as slave sata1: WD raptor sata2: WD raptor sata3: WD raptor sata4: samsung (I do not use raid) haupaugge winTV-pvr 350 pcHDTV ATI Radeon X800 XL 256M ---------------- So I do not have IDE hard disks and all my cd/dvd's are pata 1. Problem 1: unresolved. cd/dvd burning. The cd burns OK. DVD can not copy or burn anything. Changing the module to pata instead of the (amd74xx I believe) allow to burn but the booting produce errors trying to load ata, finally after 5 attempts went through. I tried everything new version, permissions, removing wodim and installing cdrecord etc etc. No luck. Only using the pata module I was able to burn (not all the time) dvds. This all may be related to my system with a mixture of dvd ide and HD sata? Without dvd burning I could not use this distro. 2. Black screen during the initial installation after the first reboot. The only solution I found that works is to select (F3) the resolution supported in my case 1600 x 1200 and install. I am sure this is related to the ati graphic card. But using this trick works well all the time. I have done zillion of installations trying to have this system working so I know by experience :-) 3. I use vmware to run palm desktop for my treo. Because some business program that I can not run under linux or crossover the only way is to load vmware. This was working great in 10.1 but not in 10.2. The usb is caput. After many moon I find out that usbfs has been disable in the kernel for security reason. The solution (AFTER you know it!) is simple just enable usbfs in the kernel and compile it and then works great. 4. I use Evolution as mail client. I also use OO. OO from novell in 10.1 had filter that allow many mail clients including Evolution to link the address books as data source so I could use for letters, envelopes all the data from Evolution. This has been removed from 10.2 and I have not found a way to do it. Of course I can export Evolution to kaddress and then use it under OO but I miss the "live link" so if I add another contact in Evolution I will not see it in OO without exporting to kaddress. What a pain. Evolution does not have an export facility except for Vcards. However there is a hiding program that will do the job: /opt/gnome/lib64/evolution/2.8/evolution-addressbook-export --format=csv > mail_address_book.csv 5. Evolution does not remember the passwords under KDE. This is related to the gnome keyring. Someone post it a fix I believe in this forum. If you do not find it write me and I will post it. 6. If you use mythtv there is a couple of points that may be a little confusing. ivtv is loaded as kernel module if I remember correctly ivtv-pm. Also there is another module to be install called ivtv. This is an rpm for the ivtv tools that are not necessary but important to install it. The mythtv rpm are self explanatory. Remember if you change the kernel you may have to remove the ivtv-pm kernel module and build a module from source for the new kernel (2.6.19). Well I envy all of you that are running 10.2. Hope there is a solution for the dvd in the future and I can joint you. In the meantime I am back to my old friend SuSE 10.1. Hiall, I wonder if it is possible to upgrade my 10.1. to 10.2. over the network using smart? I thought smart feels a lot like apt so it could be possible. On the other hand I see all the version specific channels, and wonder if it is possible. My main thought was, that packman and guru packages could be automatically upgraded from the respective repositories, as well. [opensuse] zmd-updater problem

In the last couple of days I've been getting the following error when I try to update with the zmd-updater. The updater shows 8 updates but I get the errors when I tell it to install them. Transaction failed: Can't provide /var/cache/zmd/web/files/packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.2/i586/k3b-0.99.1.0rc5-1.pm.1.i586.rpm from http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.2/ I also get a simular error when I try an update from guru. I removed the data base from /var/lib/zmd and it did recreate when I did the rczmd -start but it did not help the problem. I've made a tool similar to Mandriva's easyurpmi, but for YaST. It allows the user to specify his Suse version and architecture, displays a list of known repositories for the specific system, let's the user pick the repositories his interested in, and generates a shell script to add them to his local machine. All mirrors are automatically validated on a daily basis. Currently most available repositories are for 10.2, you are all welcomed to use the tool, and add more repositories to it. [opensuse] VMWare and kernel Version

I have built a kernel (2.6.19.1) by downloading the kernel tarball from kernel.org. I've booted up and am running it. I am attempting to install VMware server but it complains about the fact my running kernel version doesn't match the headers version. If I were running the originial SUSE kernel I'm supposed to be able to do a make cloneconfig and all will be well. Lacking that the docs indicate that I need the headers and source. I thought that's what I had when I got the tarball from kernel.org. Where do I get the kernel source package that matches 2.6.19.1? Yast doesn't find any packages for this version or one even close - it's stuck at 2.16.x.y? Thanks. -- Brett I. We currently have a couple of compat packages in the openSUSE distribution but it is unclear which compatability packages are really needed going forward and which third-party products need a compatibility package. I've started the creation of a list of packages at: http://en.opensuse.org/Compat-libraries Please update this list whenever you find you need a compat library - even if it's not yet available. This will ensure that the next openSUSE release contains all the needed compat libraries. [opensuse] video looking for Windows Media Player 9 or above

Any suggestions for how to get video working on sites that return: The CNN.com video experience is optimized for Windows Media Player 9 or above. We are unable to determine the version of Windows Media Player installed. If you choose to not upgrade your player to Windows Media Player 9 or above your overall experience may be affected. You may continue to veiw the Video without a player upgrade, although you may be prompted to install a Microsoft Windows codec in order to do so. Mplayer did come up but went into a continuous loop and never played the video from this site. Does anyone have this working? http://www.cnn.com/video/ Click on any of the videos on the right hand side will probably reproduce the issue I am talking about. [opensuse] Smart keep local RPM repo

Is there a way to tell Smart to keep all the RPMs downloaded on my local drive? I have couple of machines to update and limited Internet access - would like to only run online update once and then all the other machines from a local repo. Or does Smart keep the RPMs somewhere on my drive already? [opensuse] Suse 10.2 shared printer + Mac OSX

Ihave a laserjet 2300 connected to my desktop lpt0 port. I can print with no problem from the desktop. Went to Yast, Hardware, Printers, Other and setup to allow any machine on 192.168.1.* to access the printer and open port in firewall. Done the ipp permissions the same. Setup the Mac for ipp printer and select laserjet 2300 and the print queue name the same as on the desktop. Still am not able to print from the Mac. If I look at the print queue, it always says stopped. I can ping the desktop from the the Mac, so there is a connection. I can also start the printing of the file in the queue, but to still comes back stopped. Would appreciate any of you Mac enthusiasts to let me know how you got it to work if of course you did, or even if you did not get it to work.
