Samba, LDAP, and Novell's Universal Password

Samba on OES Linux can be configured to use a ldap password back end. Using a universal password policy, it is possible to then keep a user's multiple (samba, nds, etc) passwords in synch. Does anyone know if this is also possible for Samba on Suse Linux (not OES) ? Thanks in advance for any help -- --Moby

[opensuse] NetworkManager does not detect ppp connection

All, I have an application which establishes a PPP connection to provide internet access to the PC. Once the ppp connection has been established, IP-address, Gateway address, and DNS entries assigned the Network Manager still does not detect that the connection is up. And all other applications(Firefox, gaim, etc) do not detect that the internet connection is available either. But when I disable the Network Manager the applications then detect that the internet connection is available. Is this a bug in the Network Manager or do I need to do something to notify the Network Manager? Thanks in advance, -- Greg Suarez

Thanks all, I found ksynaptics-0.2.4-13 on the opensuse website took the binary, let rpm install it, and it put an entry in my menu. Ran that, turned off all the tapping and scrolling (had the creeping pointer problem for a moment until I noticed I hadn't turned of _all_ the scrolling) and now my touchpad is tamed :) Thanks all for all the help, Cheers, Simon "You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. The fact that this is a KDE app shouldn't matter. At least in KDE, which I use, I can install any Gnome app from the DVD and they run in KDE just fine. I assume/hope Ksynaptics will create an entry in the Gnome menu for you to use. Carlos FL Hmm, strangely, this doesn't happen for me. I searched for synaptics, and found the X11-input-synaptics package, but nothing else. Hmm, I guess maybe that just means I didn't install it? I thought that Yast's software management knew about the stuff that was still on the install disks though. Perhaps not, I'll see if I can kick it a little harder that way. [opensuse] mysterious packet filtering (10.1)

Hi, Could someone clarify what's going on - I replaced partially broken motherboard to working one and lost remote ssh connectivity while doing that. My first guess was that okay, SuSEFirewall is dropping the packets as new board has a new mac, but no. Disabling firewall made zero difference. Next guess was to disable AppArmor, but no luck there either. If I start sshd with -d on console I can see that it doesn't get the connection. Tcpdump does see the incoming packets though, so kernel must be dropping them. But where and how? Syslog does not seem to give any hints. multiple grafical login

Hi all, i remember there was a time when clicking ctrl-alt-F8 i could get a second kdm, i.e. a second grafical login, i.e. a second X-session i think. I have a R51 thinkpad and suse 9.2, and if i click alt-ctrl-f8 i just get a black screen. ctrl-alt-f[1-6] works well, and return a new init3-like console login. ctrl-alt-f7 is able to make me return to my init5-like session. Maybe this is the default suse behaivour? Can i change it? tia L.Cerini

sound turns off when switching X sessions?

Hi, all! Suse 10.1... Some of you may remember my series of weird sound problems after replacing a dead machine with a newer one. In summary: i can only play audio through the video players (xine, kaffeine, etc). When using an audio player, i get errors that alsa sees no found device. Xine works with alsa and kmixer works with it as well. So it "half works", and the only minor feature i miss is the ability to play audio from Flash apps (e.g., www.pandora.com) Since i can use kaffeine to play audio files, i'm not too annoyed by the problems and haven't investigated them much. ("It [mostly] works - leave it alone!") But now i've noticed something which is just bugging the hell out of me... My standard operating procedure is that i have KDE running under one session and WindowMaker running on another one. From WM i remote control my Windows laptop using VNC because working from my desktop machine is infinitely more physically comfortable than working on the laptop. (i have to use Windows because i get paid to program for WinCE devices - there is no going around that, so please don't preach to me about it.) That's all fine and good, and has worked as expected since time began. What doesn't work, though, since i replaced my older PC with this newer one, is that when i switch from my KDE session (where everything but MS Embedded VC is running) to my WindowMaker session (under which only VNC is running), i lose audio completely. When i switch back to display :0 (KDE) the audio comes back. So, my question is essentially: "WTF?!?!?!" i never had this problem on my older main board, also with Suse 10.1 and the *exact* same audio card which i'm using right now. The annoying this about this is that i want to play my sound files from the linux machine (display :0) while i work from the Windows machine (:1), but as soon as i switch over to :1, my audio switches off. i'm logged in as the same user on both sessions, so i'm sure that permissions are not the problem. If you're dead-set on compiling it, though... ... The error you're getting happens because you need the "-devel" packages for KDE. ... Nope, I've no interest in compiling it if I don't have to :) Thanks for the pointers, I'm going to search harder for the one that apparently should be here anyway. I think the problem is that now I'm running Gnome, not KDE. I run "make configure" but then when I run "make" it says: checking for KDE... configure: error: in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail. So, check this please and use another prefix! Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to handle this one (OK, it's not that I'm unsure, I have no clue!) Any suggestions anyone? Video card for Xen

Can some one recommend a relatively high speed video card that works with Xen? I have an Nvidia 7300 which apparently does not from allI have read on the internet and on the mail list. With the nv driver, it does not support my monitor resolution (1680X1050). Allso needs to be pci express compatible. Also is the intel 950 or any graphics card based on it compatible? Art
