Zombie Process

Hi Does anybody knows how to kill a zombie process? I know that the only way to kill the zombie process is when you reboot the computer, but if I couldnt do that? what other options does I have?, somebody told me that there is another way and it is sending a signal to the process zombie because it is in a state of wait4(), but I dont know it is true but if it were, how could i do that? because the parent is the init process pid 1.. regards.

/var/log/cups/page_log file not getting updated

Hello everyone, I am using suse 10.1 and is trying to use cupsaddsmb to install printer drivers in the print$ samba share so that windows clients can do automatic download of drivers and printing can be accounted. I could manage to install drivers using cupsaddsmb and clients could install the printer. But when i print from a windows xp client, the /var/log/cups/page_log is not getting updated at all though the jobs gets printed properly.. Could anybody give me some hints so that I can log the number of pages printed by windows clients. I am using cups-windows-6.0-1.i386.rpm. Regards Vinayan K P

giFT and Apollon

I have now installed giFT and Apollon but Apollon doesn't seem to connect. I have configured the giFT daemon and I have it running as giftd but no luck so far. I have installed plugins - gift-ares, gift-gnutella and OpenFT. Is there any tweaking that needs to be done in order to get this to work? -- http://mckagan.googlepages.com

Hi, Montoring the above file with tail -f and notice that every 20mins I have the entry of 'Oct 22 10:13:53 spy -- MARK --' (sans quotes) What is the MARK and how could I find out what is causing it? Viewing an active log file

Hi, What I would like to know is what will happen to my Linux syste or a log file if I am reading the log file contents via konqueror when it needs to update itself? Are the changes stored in RAM until I refresh the konqi window or are the changes lost? Are different files treated differently ie reading te /var/log/messages file would be catastrophic if the system needed to update the file, but reading the var/log/ntp file would be fine as the changes would be saved in RAM until the konqi window is closed or refreshed. [opensuse] Upstart (Ubuntu)

All, I've read that Ubuntu is going to use Upstart ( http://upstart.ubuntu.com/ ). I'm wondering how openSuSE is thinking about Upstart? If openSuSE and/or other distributions are staying with sysv init or moving to upstart? (Some in the sysv camp and others in upstart camp). Will it break the LSB? VMware problem on SuSE 10.1

Hello everyone, I have the following rather anoying problem with VMware workstation 5.5.2 build-29772 on my SuSE Linux 10.1 host, namely everytime I reboot the vmmon module I had compiled and loaded in the kernel is for some reason gone and I get error messages like these: "Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory. Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded." "Failed to initialize monitor device." "Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to." Is there a way to just load the module and keep it there? Is this a VMware issue or is it SUSE? TIA George

Backlit keyboard OT

Hello SuSE people, The old guy is vision impaired and is beginning to have a lot of trouble seeing the keys on the keyboard. Decided to get a backlit keyboard. Googling around amd looking at hardware vendors I find that there are quite a few offered from $15 to $400. Now I know I don't want the cheapo and can't afford the other end, and besides that I have no idea how effective or readable they are. So the OT question is: Do any of you have experience with them or can make a reccomendation?? Prefer PS2 Bob S.
