suse91pro patch download

Has something happened to the SuSe linux 91pro patch download? Recently, the d/l speeds are under 5kb/s - they had been at least double and often triple? For a while I thought it was my cable modem but other sites are the usuual speeds [10 - 15 kb/s]. To add insult to injury the d/l of kernel-default was halted [twice] mid-download! large log file analysis

Hey, all -- I'm trying to find a program that can "watch" a log file, match incoming lines with configurable regexes, and as a result of these matches do things like send e-mail, etc. I've looked at logsurfer (http://logsurfer.sf.net/) which is contained in the SuSE 9.1 distro that I'm using on this machine, but have run into a problem. Specifically -- the log file that I want to analyze gets very, very large. On the order of 4 GB/day. And logsurfer simply refuses to open it once it grows beyond a certain point. I'm wondering whether anyone knows of either: - An alternative to logsurfer, with the same or very similar abilities; or - An alternative package to the one in SuSE 9.1, with support for larger files. The machine is a dual-athlon with about 400GB of disk; so it is an i686 machine (rather than 64-bit).

Not sure, if an own proxy is really needed...

Hi, As I know, that provider I plan to buy ADSL very soon, has no proxy. I decided to setup my own on my firewall/router, but I'm not 100% sure, that if our 2-3 user-comps surfing not too much and the router would be frequently shut-down (e.g. overnight), should I really care and setup a proxy-cache? I think here the culprit is, that the proxy-ing machine would be frequently taken from the net and turned OFF, so in fact with our poor internet usage we can't really benefit of a possible proxy. Thanks, Pelibali Ps. Security issues should be already solved by the firewall/router doing masqu./IP-fwd.

linuxant driver: warning ?

Hi, I installed the trial linuxant driver for a wlan card in a laptop. The card ended up not being used but when the 4 weeks free trial expired the sytem becam unbootable ( 9.1 ), erroring out with the message "waiting for mandatory device wlan0" rpm -e driverloader rfom within a mounted rescue system reports rpm not installed. Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA F

opensuse wlan

Hello everybody, this weekend i tried opensuse rc1 - everything looks fine but I cannot connect to the internet via my wlan. I had the same problem with 9.3 but I could solve this by deleting my ethernetcard in yast. In rc1 I cannot delete the ethernetcard. If I click on delete the card does not disappear, it simply is markedt as "unconfigured" and that doesn't help (at least on suse 9.3) - is there any way to delete the card? Excuse my clumsy English ant thanks for your help. helmut

How to set up WebDAV with SuSE 9.3

Hello! I trying to set up a WebDAV file server with SuSE 9.3. I have Apache 2 installed and I'm looking for some how-to for this as there doesn't seem to be a GUI for this 8-) Anyways, I did find one or two documents about this with Google, but they were all to Apache 1.3 and using LDAP... which I did not think I'd want. I either want the normal user accounts from the computer or then set up the access with light weight .htaccess system. But before trying to do the whole thing with incompatible guides I thought I'd ask if anybody here can point me to the right direction? Or maybe even give me the steps to set it up with 9.3... Somebody must have done this with SuSE 9.3? -- HG.

SuSE 9.3, software RAID and swap partition

Hi List, I've got a box with 2 SATA drives configured through YaST during installation as a RAID1 mounted to / root which is working well. I'm still getting my head around the management tool mdadm but it's slowly coming together. I'm about to start testing this and wanted some information on the swap partition. It's not currently in a RAID partition and I read somewhere that it's not necessary to provide redundancy for the swap partition, but I was wondering if there is data in the swap partition and that physical drive fails, won't the box need it? Modifying xorg.conf?

I'm still trying to get my laptop with integrated S3 savage chip to use dri. I've found some good resources, but I still have a couple of concerns that I hope someone can help with. Firstly, I have to change settings in xorg.conf but I don't want to mess up SaX. For the record, SaX tells me that 3D accelleration isn't available for my card. Is there a safe way to modify the xorg.conf file? I'll send another email for the other problem, it's only remotely linked. -- Paul

Hi, One might first ask why? We'll it would nice to use my main Linux box to make vnc connections to a customer site running a Windows 2003. At the moment I have to wind up a poor little windows XP box to vpn into the Windows 2003 server. Now my main box is Suse 9.1 but it is running latest ppp stuff (from Suse 9.3). It will open vpn tunnels to other linux, and window 2000 servers. Using same connection profiles it will not connect to the Windows 2003 server. export lvm volumes with nfs on sles9 sp2

dear list, I have a server with an lvm subdirectory, and I want to export the whole filesystem read only to another server. I'm using nfs to export read only. However, on there other server, I can 'see' everything, except the lvm mount. Can nfs not export lvm mounts? (obviously the lvm volumes are mounted on the server, and they work perfectly) Any ideas? (should I be using something else than nfs?) mj

growisofs

I am trying to use groisofs in a kornshell script called by cron to backup a user's files to my dvd burner. the script with growisofs works fine if run as root but when I try running it as a 'normal' users I get permission denied on the device. I went to fstab and on the /dev/dvdrecorder line added the wr option. What am I missing? What about a openSUSE Server Version, just like CentOS or Whitebox ? Perhaps with the same core as SLES? Is there a chance that Novell or openSUSE release such a distribution? I know that Novell want to earn money with their Server Product, but I think most of the money will be made with additional services and addons, like the Novell Enterprise Services, Groupwise or eDirectory. -- Marcel Volz

One of your startup scripts took a hit or the binary files for tty setup took a hit. Inspect and see how the filesystem is. Which filesystem is it? Did you fsck it yet? During the bootstrap, Linux uses information that is either setup by you thanks to Yast initial boot or factory boot (which will always use VESAFB) and whatever is on the LILO/GRUB commandline (go into yast, go to boot loader configuration, look at append commandline, see some software switches and you will see something=vesa and that will be the clue for using the VESA framebuffer driver). Sax2,on the other hand, is the configuration utility for your X windowing system. You wont see jack of the final results until you reach runlevel 5 and go into X (the grey graphical screen with the x in the middle). You can also startx and play god there too. Dmesg is for the text console and your hardware info for all runlevels; Sax2 is just for X. My advice: adjust your window manger so you can run top or the process monitor and run some video. I use mplayer because it runs well and beats the crap out of the machine. Make sure to compile it for your laptop for best speed. Try one video driver and then the other driver. Monitor the CPU utilization numbers. Some pages are not possible to edit (like the FAQ). On one side I can understand the reason, on the other side it kind of is against OSS and WiKi, I think. Who are the people that are able to change these pages? Are they SUSE people only, or are they openSUSE deveoplers? Or a random selection of people? What is the policy behind this? Will this change in the future? ldap replication problem on sles9

dear list, I'm trying to setup a slave ldap server. Both servers on sles9, sp2. Unfortunately, I'm not very succesful at it :-( I am following the instrutions from the O'Reilly "LDAP System Administration" book. Using the sles9 packages. ldap works almost perfectly. (only having a small problem with rcldap reload that doesn't seem to work, but wrote another post specifically for that today) So i added to slapd.conf replogfile /var/lib/ldap/slurpd.replog replica uri=ldap://192.87.143.6:389 suffix="dc=intech,dc=unu,dc=edu" credentials={SSHA}somethingihavedeletenfromthispost binddn="cn=replica,dc=intech,dc=unu,dc=edu" bindmethod=simple tls=no and of course I also configured the slave according to the instructions from O'Reilly: suffix "dc=intech,dc=unu,dc=edu" rootdn "cn=replica,dc=intech,dc=unu,dc=edu" rootpw {SSHA}somethingihavedeletenfromthispost updatedn "cn=replica,dc=intech,dc=unu,dc=edu" updateref ldap://servername.for.master.server Upon restart of ldap and slurpd the files /var/lib/ldap/slurpd.replog and slurpd.replog.lock are created, but are zero in size. The files that are actually being used are different: /var/lib/slurpd/replica/slurpd.replog. And when I set slapd.conf to use the SECOND set of files, NONE of the changes are recorded anywhere. Strange? I think so... And none of the changes are being replicated to the other server. There are currently no filewalls etc in between the machines, and I've double checked the credentials used. Greeting, We have a small situation here, we run a comprehensive POS system on suse 9.3 currently, and as you may have guessed POS systems have POS programable keyboards. So we have programmed the keyboards for user logins. using passwd -d username we disable the passwd. from the login this works fine. But when we do remote support and we are logged in as a user (non-root) su - username gives an error invalid passwd. I have tried to add the users to the root group and to each others groups but it still does not work any ideas? Making a bootable PPC DVD

I have been notified that it is not able to make a PPC bootable DVD with my script. This due to the fact that /boot is build in a different way. The command used is: mkisofs -V $VOLID -r -J -l -L -P "$PUBLI" -b "boot/loader/isolinux.bin" -c "boot/loader/boot.cat" -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -graft-points -o $DVD_DIR/$ISO . If you want to change the driver, use SaX2 or Yast and change the driver to one that you will work best. The VESA driver works with most everything. That is why it is used. Is rlocate something to be included in a newer suse version? rlocate, by Rasto Levrinc, is based on slocate, which is an improvement on traditional locate, rlocate updates its path database in real-time by using a kernel module that intercepts all paths modifications and a daemon that logs those operations on a differences file. The combination of the full path database with the difference file gives you instant updated information on the filesystem. rlocate behaves exactly the same way as slocate or locate does, except that any modification you make to the filesystem is immediately taken in account. If not, it's most likely a configuration blip in your $HOME/.gconf dircetory that contains the config for panel applets that are loaded. From memory it's something like .gconf/apps/panel/applets or something like that. You could try logging in at the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1), rename that directory then log into the GUI again as your normal user. You will loose some desktop settings but these should be fairly trivial to setup again. I've only used SuSE 9.3 official RPM's and am running a currently fully patched system and have never seen this particular problem. SteveC

Showing the PC layer on Dual PC/MAC cds (FIXED)

I'd like to thank whoever fixed the issue in 9.3 that meant that Dual Layer PC/MAC cd would show the mac layer. Or at least it's fixed in beta 3. Installed RC1, two concerns..

The installation of RC1 went very well.. very smooth. I quite like the aesthetic of everything thus far. Two concerns however: 1 - Performance is pretty poor compared to my Windows 2000 partition on the very same box. By 'performance' I am largely referring to load times in Gnome.. Firefox for example takes at least twice as long to load. :| Is there any way to improve this? Am I doing something wrong? 2 - The right side of my screen is 'chopped off' by several mm. Is there a way to correct this software wise or am I stuck adjusting my monitor settings each time I boot into linux? The machine is 1.3ghz with ~800mb RAM. JON

I have an operation type question regarding the modified Xen kernel and the installed SuSE 9.3 kernel that only that person can answer. I need to know if the Xen (modified kernel) co-exists and is co-resident on the distribution with the distribution kernel or whether the distribution kernel is modified as a DOM 0 virtual machine. It is my understanding that the Xen package when activated will modify the 9.3 distribution kernel so that the entire SuSE 9.3 OS will become an Xen system with the installed 9.3 OS as the resource source (CPU, IO devices, etc.) when other OS's are virtualized. I need to know how this Xen system performs especially with respect to server operation involving SAMBA, FTP, SSH, etc. I would like to buy 9.3 for this purpose if it works well from the server end of things. WinModem Lucent/Agere on SuSE 9.3

I tried using the modules included in the lt_modem package inside SuSE 9.2 distribution, though, the kernel complains about an undefined struct and that it is trying to taint the kernel. After the module was loaded forcely, the device is at /dev/ttyLT0, i perform a symlink to /dev/modem and then do: setserial /dev/modem. run wvdial.conf and later run, wvdial but it says: No dial tone. help here? i read the package's docs and well.. ./scanmodem do detects the modem (at least i think so since it prints the modem info at the console). i think it is supported and i want to make it work. It is connected as a PCI card, not integrated with the mainboard, and it does works under windows. thanks! -- Jonathan J. Hi, Two days ago I asked a similar question on the SUSE english mailing list but go no reply so far. Is it possible to upgrade SUSE 8.1 to e.g. SUSE 10.0 by only installing rpm packages? So I don't want to boot from e.g. a cdrom because the machine is located in a remote location and I only have ssh access to that machine. Is there a difference between a distribution upgrade using YAST or by installing the correct rpm's? Is the upgrade software doing things that are not in rpm packages? I know this would be a giant step, I will test it thouroughly on a local machine before doing it remote, I only want to know if it's possible at all. SuSE on XTREME notebooks

Has anyone tried to install SuSe on the notebooks manufactured by XTREME.NOTEBOOKS.COM ? I haven't tried this before. I don't want to run software Raid because I read that if one of the HD fails then the system won't run until the second HD is replaced. This is what I am hoping to acheive: 2 Harddisk with RAID 1 - full mirror. I hope that should one HD fail that the system will just continue unaffect but with one HD. Is this correct? USB modem and unsupported module tainting my kernel?

I installed Suse 9.3 on my ThinkPad X30 laptop with a built in Linmodem. Looking at dmesg I see the lines copied below. PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.6 to 64 slamr: mc97 codec is SIL27 slamr: slamr0 is ICH card. slusb: unsupported module, tainting kernel. ST7554 USB Modem. usbcore: registered new driver ST7554 USB Modem When I check YAST hardware info I see Device name: /dev/ttySL0 Device: 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller Driver: slamr The built in modem works, so that isn't a problem. But where does reference to a USB Modem come from? And is the unsupported module that is tainting the kernel something to be concerned about? Thanks, John

Hi Gurus, I am trying to install new kernel 2.6.13 (in an attempt to try suspend2). make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install. After that I edit the init (mkinitrd) to include the line "echo > /proc/software_suspend/do_resume" (exactly before the line "udev_discover_resume"). Then, I change the grub menu. Now I reboot. I **did not** change anything (except CPU type to Pentium-M) in the old ".config" file from kernel 2.6.11.4-21.9. I also did not change anything in /etc/sysconfig... I just patched the new kernel with suspend2 and copied the old config file and compiled the kernel. Why are any of the device modules like network , mouse .... not automatically loaded? Any help greatly appreciated.

Getting Dreamweaver to connect to SFTP via vsftpd

I seem to be running into a little trouble getting Dreamweaver to connect to my home computer from work via SFTP option within Dreamweaver. I have no problems connecting to my machine from my Mac OSX machine using the sftp command. For what it's worth, there's nothing wrong with software RAID, and whoever told you about a software raid system not running until the failed disk is replaced is false. I have a simple software raid 1 setup which is very reliable. 1 array for the boot partition (my system is a single partition) and 1 array for the swap. (hardware raid mirrors disks, whereas software raid will mirror partitions on disks therefore I have 2 raid 1 arrays). I have pulled drives from working test systems quite a few times and can verify it will keep running and that you can even reboot off the 2nd drive without problems and no, it's not messy to do. There are a couple of downsides but for myself, they weren't enough to justify the cost of a hardware raid. These are: 1) performance is affected slightly because the cpu has to do more, and both disks must be written too, individually. 2) simplicity. To replace a failed drive in a software raid, you need to re-configure the partitions on the new disk then add them back into their corresponding arrays. Typically with hardware raids you don't have to do this. SteveC

I had a problem with my system recognizing the DVD burner as a USB 2.0 storage device. Someone pointed out that if there is media in ths device, it is seen as storage - even if it is blank media! Makes sense - albeit little to me. With that tidbit - the device is recognized. Now, when I put in a blank DVD-R, it report it finds a disk - DVD-R Sequential (empty) media but that I need to insert an empty medium (DVD +-R(W)). I looked around but don't see any errors. Problems coming Up

OS: SuSE 9.3 Pro Friday night, there was an extended power outage which exhausted the UPSes forcing a shutdown. When this system (running on Dell 600SC hardware) came back up, there were no logins on tty1 - tty6 and several processes failed to start (cups, postfix, postgrey, for example). These are all configured to start on system boot. KDE appears to work and I can login in via ssh. If I attempt to manually start a getty (e.g., mingetty tty2), the shell session goes away. tty2 - tty6 are blank and tty1 has the bootup stuff. I did a system repair from the SuSE media to no avail so I restored the root filesystem from the previous week's master backup (/home was not restores to avoid losing email, etc. received since the last backup). However the problem persists. I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot, much less fix this problem. Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you, Lucky Leavell

Opensuse, I downloaded and burned the iso(s) and then attemtped to install RC1 on my ADM Athlon system. I have installed Suse7/8/9 Pro and SLES on this same box without problem. However, when CD1 completes and the system reboots, it will not boot to OS or from CD1 or CD2. This system is very good and has 1Gig of mem. I have drive bays and can boot all my other Suse installs... no problems. Recommendations on Wireless LAN Equipment

I'd like to setup at least two, maybe two boxes and a Dell Latitude C610 laptop on a wireless LAN - preferably with SUSE 10.0 (I'm playing with beta 4 now). Would anyone be willing to suggest brand/models? The laptop has an ethernet port, so I'll obviously need a PC Card (PCMCIA?) wireless adapter. I do have a 4-port USB hub if wireless LAN cards work o.k. via USB. I know there have been some issues using USB ethernet adapters under Linux, and assume that applies to wireless as well. Eventually, I plan to convert the remaining 8 or 9 boxes over to wireless as well (total of 12 systems). I assume I need a hub/switch as well, or just the router? It appears that I might be well served to pick up a LinkSys 4-port router for my Internet connection. The only 16-port wireless router I saw (on first glance) runs over USD $300.00! Pehaps I could use one box to route the rest into the LinkSys. Of course, the 4-port would suffice for now, since I won't likely be moving to wireless all at once. Yeah, I know. I don't know anything about choosing LAN equipment. Anyway... Thanks for the input.

After installing Suse 9.3 on my ThinkPad X30 laptop with an Intel graphics adapter, I find that dmesg tells me that the 2.6.11.4-20a-default kernel is using the vesa frame buffer driver instead of intelfb. Does 9.3 always install the vesa frame buffer instead of an adapter-specific driver? Wouldn't the adapter-specific driver be better? Assuming that intelfb would be better, how do I make the change? YAST doesn't seem to know about either one. Any pointers would be appreciated. Just downloaded and attempted to install. I say 'attempted' because all did not go well. A total of 109 packages on CD4 either failed to install, or, most frequently gave the message media not found. This is after I downloaded the CD twice. No such problems up to, and including, beta 4. Hi, I have PostgreSQL 8.0.3 installed on SuSE 9.3 box along with Apache 2, PHP 5.0.3-14.5 and latest phpPgAdmin 3.5.5. Several months ago I had working setup, but since then my system have been patched with latest RPMs, and old PostgreSQL databases and setup files have been deleted and re-initialized from scratch. And now I have a problem: whenever I am trying to connect to PostgreSQL 8 with phpPgAdmin, I get this error (even ith ¨extended login¨ option in phpPgAdmin set to false). from PostgreSQL 8 log: LOG: database system is ready LOG: could not connect to Ident server at address "127.0.0.1", port 113: Connection refused FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "postgres" adodb error message: pg_connect() [function.pg-connect]: Unable to connect to PostgreSQL server: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "postgres" in /home/andrei/public_html/tools/phpPgAdmin/libraries/adodb/drivers/adodb-postgres64.inc.php on line 404 This is strange because by default PostgreSQL 8 seem to allow password-less connection from localhost. Additionally, what does it have to do with port 113? Config file specifies port 5432. Additionally,I have changed Anyone have an idea how to fix this? LVM problems

I had a LV of 2 partitions on 9.2. No problem. I wanted to be able to access this LV from 9.0. (same system). In 9.0 the physical volumes were detected as belonging to the correct VG. I added the 2 physical volumes in the physical volumes side, then on the logical volume side tried to add it. Told it not to format and where to mount it. Then hit apply. It said it coud not mount it. So I reboot the 9.2 system and now it can't mount it either. Is my data still intack? On the 9.2 system: harley:/home/markh # vgscan Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... Found volume group "mpx" using metadata type lvm1 harley:/home/markh # pvscan PV /dev/hda7 VG mpx lvm1 [20.00 GB / 0 free] PV /dev/hda11 VG mpx lvm1 [31.55 GB / 52.00 MB free] Total: 2 [51.55 GB] / in use: 2 [51.55 GB] / in no VG: 0 [0 ] Is the above telling me I have 52GB free? No login on tty1-6

OS: SuSE 9.3 Pro After shutting down due to a power failure (before the UPS ran down), I tried bringing the system back up. The graphical (KDE) login works fine but switching to tty1 - 6 works but there is no login prompt but a blank screen. I have been running 9.3 Pro since its release last April and have never seen anything like this. Rebooting did not fix it. The boot messages only indicate spamd failed to start. Any idea as to what may be wrong and what to do about it? Hardware is Dell 600SC with Adaptec 39160 SCSI controller. No changes here. Thank you, Lucky Leavell

bitorrent folder

I'm not sure if this a manipulation error (from me) or a torrent bug. when dowloading beta3/4 with bitorrent, the isos where dowloaded in a "iso" folder. RC1 iso's are dowloaded in the current folder. in my case this led to download in a separate partition. SuSE 9.3 + XEN + IBM x306 = lockup

Hi List, I've just installed SuSE 9.3 (x86_64) on my brand spanking new IBM x306. This machine has a EM64T Pentium4 processor. The installation went ok, and I pulled down all the updates via online update. However, I cannot boot the XEN kernel. When I try booting this kernel, it locks up hard after the boot message 'NET: Registered protocol family 16'. The only means of recovery from this is to hit the reset button. Booting the normal kernel is fine. I'd really like to run some XEN guests on this machine, so any suggestions will be very gratefully received. The XEN kernel is (updated through YOU) kernel-xen-2.6.11.4-21.9 Cheers, Richard

What is the difference between /lib and /usr/lib ? (i.e., why are some libraries in the one and other libraries in the other?) Also, neither is listed in /etc/ld.so.conf Is that because the strings '/lib' and '/usr/lib' are 'built in' as constants in the kernel ? Thanks for helping me understand, mikus

RC1 ppc booloader install still fails

Hi list, sadly, as in beta3 and beta4 the install of a bootloader still fails in RC1 on ppc. The initrd is created (BTW: you need a initrd, no initramfs!). At the bootloader configuration screen in YaST, I am not able to configure anything. Regardless what button I click, it says "...cannot...". Will this be fixed for final? On tty1 is written: Can't locate object method "InitializeBootLoader" via package "Bootloader::Core" at /usr/lib/perl5/verdor_perl/5.8.7/Bootloader/Library.pm line 512. Can't undef active subroutine during global destruction. Can't call method "l_debug" on an undefined value at /usr/lib/perl5/verdor_perl/5.8.7/Bootloader/Library.pm line 177. Can't undef active subroutine during global destruction. I tried so save the logs, but only "boot.msg" and "Xorg.0.log" have a size greater than zero. The system now wants to reboot. Where is the install log? -- mdc

Bug in /usr/bin/less in SUSE 9.3?

Hi! I have the following problem with /usr/bin/less (less-382-41) in SUSE 9.3 FTP edition for i386. I enter... $ less big-file.txt ...and nothing happens. Instead, I get another shell prompt, but I can't write anything (at least it's not echoed on screen). I press return and get a new shell prompt, but on the same row as the previous (no newline between). I hit Ctrl-D to exit that shell, and now the "less" screen shows up, and everything is back to normal. Strangely, "less < big-file.txt" works fine, and all other situations where less reads from stdin. I have tried different terminal emulators, and the bug persists. When I log into another machine and do "less file" (where less is part of another OS), there is no problem. Therefore, I believe the bug is in less. Perhaps in a library, since vimdiff seems to have the same problem. Has anyone else encountered this? -- Best Regards, Tom Weber

Lockups on Laptops

I have moved this from OpenSUSE's list as it really doesn't belong there. I am having some interesting problems, and I am not sure what the cause is. Whenever I use the fglrx drivers for the video my machine locks up hard whenever I try anything that uses openGL Also, when I"m using the native wireless madwifi drivers for the Atheros wireless nic The machine will lock up hard when I shut down, or try to disable the NIC. I am sure I am not the only one experiencing this issue especially since my wife's 1.0.6 installation of Firefox works just fine with KDE. However, my installation barfs when I execute Firefox. I haven't had much luck connecting to a Cisco Concentrator applicance with any PPTP client. I know it's supposed to work, and I've gotten it to kind of connect a couple of times, but it's never been consistent for me. So it's worth considering that it might be a server-side issue. JFS not supported as root filesystem??

I suspect that is likely to piss off a few people, just as it did me - according to bug #115227, JFS is no longer supported as root fileystem by SuSE Linux. And of course, true to the "open" nature of openSUSE, no explanation, nothing. You guys at SuSE - you're not making this particularly easy, are you? By the way, did I completely miss the official announcement about SuSE dropping JFS root support? I know JFS was dropped for _installation_ as of 9.3 - pissed me off too, but to also completely drop support for JFS as root filesystem ... /Per Jessen, Zürich

PPTP Client Set Problems conneting to a VPN in SuSE 9.3

Hi I am using PPTP Client to connect to a VPN. I have followed the instruction for SuSE 9.2 as shown in http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-suse-92.phtml There are certain differences in setting up the firewall. So I used YAST to turn the firewall at boot time yet it seams that the firewall might be turning??? when I establish the PPTP tunnel. At the moment I can connect to VPN but I cannot ping anything and I get network unreachable. Any suggestions? Has anyone succesfully connected to a VPN? -H

Samba 2.2.5 and Domain Administrator

Although I will be updating this server to Samba 3.x soon, I have to come up with a quick solution as soon as possible for the following problem: I have a WinXP user which currently is registered as a "User" of WinXP but must be changed to "Domain Admin" in order for some new software which he must use to be operable. Of course giving him the root passwd is definately out of the question. I already have the "domain admin group = @domadm" parameter in my smb.conf file and the only memeber of domadm is root. I added via YAST the user to domadm group as well (was only a member of "users" group) but when I try to use any Admin issues in WinXP when the user logs in, I see that he doesn't have the priviledges required. It appears that the user is not an admin user as stated in smb.conf. I have also tried "domain admin group = @domadm johnq" as well (where johnyq is the username of the user which logs in) but still nothing! Does the user by any chance have to be a memeber only of the domadm group or can he be a memeber of users & domadm at the same time, or is this an irrelevant issue? Thank you all for your help! Chris PS: SuSE 8.1 running Samba 2.2.5. Samba is running lovely for all Win users (98, XP, 2000 etc) including the user in question, up to now that I have to give hime Admin priviledges.

RC1 reordering nics

At boot time the order _is_ correct, the kernel loads the modules in the right order and they are named correct. But if the network comes up SuSE reorders the nics! Where is this information stored? Any hints? Oh, and I want this to be added to the most anoying bugs! -- mdc

Wonder if anyone has been succesful? We are aware of the Cisco client but.... the Sys Admin want me to try using PPTP first. -H

Hi, we had a problem with subversion, an error "Can't recode string" appeared. Our configuration: Server: SuSE 9.3 with standard Subversion 1.1.3. Client: Windows XP Professional with TortoiseSVN (1.2.2 build 4295, svn 1.2.3). When accessing (retrieving log message or commiting newly added files) a folder with special characters (umlauts) in it we got the error message "Can't recode string" in the client. (See also the thread on the subversion user mailing list http://subversion.tigris.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=users&msgNo=38101) After various tests we solved the problem and think the error is in the subversion server. The solution was: Remove the SuSE subversion package and rebuild from a newer subversion tarball. We tested the 1.1.3, the 1.1.4, the 1.2.0 and the newest 1.2.3 tarball. With the 1.1.x versions the error remains, with the 1.2.x versions everything is fine. So we suggest using a subversion version >= 1.2.0 if you want to use special characters like umlauts in your file names. Unfortunately you have to build from the tarball. But this is without complications, you do not have to update any libraries or tools (e.g. you can use the SuSE versions of apr and apr-utils, see the file INSTALLATION in the tarball for ./configure command line arguments). Has anyone run into the same problem with a 1.1.x subversion or is it just our server? Bye, Bernhard and Marko

The Gnome iso is nearly there thanks to Magnus and he will announce it tomorrow, once it is tested and uploaded. To do more we will need more people as we are currently quite stretched and I do not think that I personally can handle more workload. I have delayed the -modified iso's now for quite some time. The golem.de and distrowatch articles about openSUSE and SUPER have been received very positively and has raised expectations that I fear I cannot fulfill alone. Greetings, I would like to make a request for Gnome, and maybe this should go out to the development community as well, but there does not seem to be a whole lot of Widgets or Panel Applets included for Gnome/ KDE. It would be nice to see more of these. We can take example from Macintosh and os X. They have thousands of widgets for thier desktop. Why can't we do the same. I have a suse 9.2 server running apache2 and ssl which works fine. I am replacing it with another server running Suse 9.3 +apache2 and ssl. I copied the config files from the old server to the new, but still have problems. I can get https or http, but not both changing the APACHE_SERVER_FLAGS in /etc/cysconfig/apache2 from "" to "-D SSL", but I cannot get both as I did in Suse 9.2. Also, with https I cannot get webmin to come up, only in http. The appache error files has a warning NameVirtualHost *:0 has no virtualhosts. VirtualHost configuration: syntax OK. Have not been able to find their directive anywhere. Where would it be, and would that be the problem of not being able to access https and http? The apache configuration I find very confusing also. Is there anywhere that shows like a flowchart for what config file calls another or anything? Art

Andreas: I am replying on top since this is a related set of issues that applies to Beta4 and the next release RC1 (I printed the updated documentation). 1) I can see that we still have the issue with /boot and /home being ignored. I spent some time trying to get around this problem to no avail. 2) I downloaded Beta4 version of 1_CD kde iso and looked for My.sel under suse/setup/descr and could not find it (after mount -o loop). 3) In version Beta4 (full DVD/5xiso) the LICENSE.TXT was missing (in my downloaded version) under /yast (i.e., I put full version under /yast). 4) There were other files such as ChangeLog and README* that I added that came with full version but omitted in your documentation under copy. 5) It is not clear the first time around that /yast is really the DVD (or Houghie's 5xCD to 1xDVD) full version that we want to reduce to 1_CD. 6) This is IMPORTANT to me. I assume the sample My.sel.kde or My.sel.minimal are renamed to My.sel after copying into suse/setup/descr, correct? If I got this wrong, I am not going anywhere. I tried looking at the 1_CD iso (kde) I downloaded but I could not find it (see my point 2 above). 7) It is not clear that /super/SUPER refers to the "minimal" version and "/super/SUPER.kde" refers to the "kde" according to what is done to previous step when creating My.sel. This is in relation to the "script" provided in the documentation (I call it generate1CD.sh). 8) Would it be possible to create a text file with the (RPM) packages to be copied from full 1xDVD version to /super/SUPER[.kde] for each minimal and kde? I went to the My.sel.kde and created a file based on it. Even better, the actual script to do the copy. 9) In the documentation (Now comes the tricky part), it is stated that /yast/suse/noarch/i586/i686 are copied into /super/SUPER/suse/i586, yet in the 1_CD iso (kde version) I downloaded, it is not the case. The downloaded iso shows RPM packages under noarch, i586 and i686 that correspond to packages under the original full version (as expected, 1xCD is only what is needed to keep the size to under 700 MB). 10) what is the purpose of TRANS.TBL files? I saw them in the 1_CD iso I downloaded but not in the 1xDVD version. The following points I just read but was confused and afraid of trying until I resolve the previous issues: 11) in the section to modify the "initrd", I just don't understand what I am supposed to do in the line "cp YOUR_INFO_FILE info". Is "info" the file name? is YOUR_INFO_FILE my version of autoinstall.xml? 12) when I "tar -zxf runup.tgz", what is the purpose of the "usr" subdirectory? does it really run out of /tmp or out of /suse? This may seem too detailed but I have spent quite a bit of time trying to convert the documentation into a workable solution. It is NOT a critisism on what I consider a great piece of work. I do realize that the documentation and the sample "iso's" for 1_CD that we can download do not have to correspond. However, when you are trying to figure out how to do it on your own, it would help that the "iso's" are produced by the procedure documented. I can be mistaken here and please prove me wrong. Online Update Problem

When I installed 9.3 last week and ran online update, there were 5 packages that had signature errors. In the past, with 8.1, these errors eventually just cleared themselves up. I have run Online Update every day since then and those updates still won't come through. There have been a couple of new updates and the downloaded and installed fine. Will these others eventually clear up, or do you now have to take some sort of manual intervention step to fix them? The patches are for -- Samba Rpm Java_1_4_3_sum MozillFirefox Adobe Reader for PDF Files As always, any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg Wallace

Unable to see USB 2.0 DVD writer

I bought a dual layer DVD writer that is a USB 2.0 device. I used it to burn some data DVDs using k3b on my Dell Inspiron 5100 (SuSe 9.3 Pro with "latest" updates via YOU). The last time I tried to burn some DVDs - I re-attached the burner but could not get the system to recognize it. There are two USB ports on the system - EHCI & UHCI. I swapped cables and even hubs. If I look at the USB devices using Configure (KDE Control Module), I see it is recognized as a USB 2.0 storage device but as a storage device not a CDROM/DVD burner. It is attached to a USB 2.0 controller. It worked but now it won't (yes it sounds as though it is "broke" - but why is it seen on the bus????). I don't have any systems in the house that I trust have USB 2.0 controllers - but I will try on a Useless-98 box I have (in fact I can try it with Kanotix/INSERT now that I think about it ....) Does anyone have any ideas as to how to figure what I may be doing wrong? or work to debug things here?? It is a Mad Dog Megastor burner if it matters/helps but is recognized as an Acer USB 2.0 storage device.... really reassuring! Rich

Is it possible to install and boot SuSE 10.0 (RC1) using Linux software RAID with 4 drives configured in a RAID 10 (or 01). While expermenting with SuSE 9.3 it appeared I could install onto RAID 0 or RAID 1 but not RAID 10. In addition, is it still the case that I must either a) use LVM to partition RAID'd drives or b) partition then built separate RAID arrays from partitions? Hello all I think i need help from people that understand more then i how suse has designed the boot system I have a promise card, sx4000, for ide raid Please, no need to discuss about the merits or demerits of the card, or even the company , because that will not solve the actual problem (the mistake is already made ) The thing is that the card works well under suse 9.0 using default kernel from install cds (2.4.21-99-default), using one module that is available from promise site I have been trying to use suse 9.3 and that same kernel but without success. To perform the testing process i have been using vmware machines, even without the proper fasttrak module, because the problems arise before that becomes an issue. If i install suse 9.3, clone the proper line in grub or lilo, reboot to test, and then try to install the rpm of the default kernel from suse 9.0 The package installs clean, the lilo or grub gets modified, but the system will not boot the kernel 2.4.x, resulting in kernel panic , like unable to mount root in dev:08:02 or similar. Is the system unable to locate the proper initrd, althought it is there and the boot configuration is good ???? why ??? If i install suse 9.0 and then try to upgrade to suse 9.3, keeping the proper line under llilo or grup, the system will not boot with the old kernel, even if the vmlinuz-2.4.21-99-default, and the equivalent initrd-2.4.21-99-default are there, the proper /lib/modules/......... files are there, and the grup line is there, like it should ..... Why is so dificult to use a kernel 2.4.x on suse 9.3 ?? is it impossible ????? I keep a copy of /etc under /etc.copia/ and /boot under /boot.copia/, from suse 9.0 I even generated modprobe.conf from the old modules.conf, using some information that read from http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/02/migrating_to_26.html , before the upgrade Still the old 2.4.x kernel will not boot Do i have to force the upgrade to keep some packages from the suse 9.0 version ?? I have a disk hdb. It looks like this in etc/fstab: /dev/hdb1 /data1 auto noauto,user 0 0 /dev/hdb5 /data2 reiserfs noauto,user 0 0 but df says it's not mounted: :~> df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hda2 116154400 75809028 40345372 66% / tmpfs 777972 24 777948 1% /dev/shm In the Yast expert Partitioner module hdb1 and hdb5 are mounted at '*'. I keep my backup on this drive (hdb5) using rsync. My / partition is on hda2. data2 is mounted under /. The properties window for the / directory says I'm using 70 of the 110 GB's on this drive (hda2). The properties window for the the backup directory on /data2 says its 32GB's in size(hdb5 is 110 GBs). df says hdb is not mounted. Is this true? If true, is /data2 really mounted on hda2?? How can I tell which drive /data2 is mounted on? Thanks, Jerome

Ok .. first let me confess not really knowing if I am asking this correctly. Second, if there are other lists where this should be just let me know. Here is what I want to do but I don't know if I need another PART? I have SMTP configured to give incoming email to postfix. postfix then puts it into the correct folder for the user in /var/spool/mail. I want to set up Thunderbird on another machine on the same LAN to retrieve email from those user mailboxes in /var/spool/mail. I would like one user on the machine I want to read the mail on to open Thunderbird, retrieve mail from 3 different user accounts on the postfix / SMTP box and put it into various folders in Thunderbird. I am having some interesting problems, and I am not sure what the cause is. Whenever I use the fglrx drivers for the video my machine locks up hard whenever I try anything that uses openGL Also, when I"m using the native wireless madwifi drivers for the Atheros wireless nic The machine will lock up hard when I shut down, or try to disable the NIC. Probs Login Only from Console

Greets, I am having troubles trying to log in from console (ttyX). I can log in from gdm, xdm, using 'su', 'xdu', from any login process except from console: I am using PAM for authentication, and this is the registry entry i get when trying to log in from console: Sep 7 13:29:26 scar login[7863]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM /dev/tty1 FOR root, Authentication failure This prob is for any user, not just root. I tried changing passwords but it didn't help. It was working fine, but i tried to change some display manager options to use gdm instead of xdm, and after some time i noted i was unable to log in from consoles. Using SuSE Professional 9.3, a recent instalattion with no external software yet. Overwhelming number of emails

Hi I really do not like to complain, but is there a way I can reduce the number of seeminly repeating email. Or can I just receive an email that has the problem then a solution instead of every kind of unsolicited email. Not knowing where the conversation started makes it hard to understand. My next option was to unscribe, which I really do not want to do. I am still using windows because I do not know how to setup my SuSE 9.1 to connect to the internet. I need a step by guide please. I attempted with my motoroal internal modem but when prompted to set up my mail accounts I got confused. I have started reading unix books with the hope to understanding better. Which programming language does Linux use for creating applications? I noticed that the openCD has C and C++ header files, a compiler for C and C++. I have a question that I am sure if for lack of education. I have a "source" rpm package that I need to modify (i.e. change some of the "c" programs). How can I make changes to the source (I know, use the editor but keep reading) and still make sure that my "rpm" is valid? How can I then generate a binary RPM ready for distribution? can I use yast for this purpose? or is it some rpm commands? I use SuSE in Chinese (RC_LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8) when I start Yast(kdesu to root ) , the scim often start second ,then in my system applet has two scim icons. somtime when module of yast has started,but the second scim has not start ,that Yast modules always halted. I think that is bug,but how can I submit a bug,thanks!

3ware cards work fine for me. Two "complaints", more just things to look out for: - No RPM that've ever been able to find for the 3dm2 management application for SuSE. I did find one for Fedora, but it's got some files in the wrong place. - In cases where the machine has an on-board (sata_sil) SATA controller in addition to the 3ware card, I've had issues with the order in which the disks appear. In the installer, the onboard controller appeared first; when booting the system, the 3ware controller and it's array appeared first. (This happened consistently across 3 machines with different motherboards.) I ended up having to specify the module load order as "sata_sil 3w-9xxx" in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and rebuild the initrd to get them to load properly. Problems switching between virtual consoles

Hi, I am reporting an old problem I am having since SuSE 9.2. Sometimes when i start the display manager at tty07, and then I want to go back to a text console using CTRL-ALT - F<n> I just see a blank screen and then i should perform several switches using CTRL-ALT-<n> to other consoles until something is displayed in any of the terminals. This only happens when the display manager is active, and when I want to switch from it to a text console, and from text consoles to the graphic one. What could be the reason for this? SUSE Linux 10 availability

Hi I'm confused about how SUSE Linux 10.0 will be made available... Is it going to be available from the beginning of October ONLY in retail boxes (EUR 59) with the FTP servers made available later (as usual) or will it be available from FTP early October as well and possibly with CD and DVD ISOs ? powersave problem

I just upgraded from 8.1 to 9.3 and am every time I start a session, I get this message -- "The powersave daemon is not running Starting it will improve performance /usr/sbin/rcpowersaved start" If I run /usr/sbin/rcpowersaved start, it says -- "acpid already running, but should be started by powersaved. Please set acpid service to off or stop it manually ... skipped" I disabled the powersaved daemon because I am running a desktop computer and don't see any need for it, based on my reading. Based on the description for acpid, it doesn't sound like this is something I want to disable (am I wrong?). How can I get powersave out of my hair? Thanks, Greg Wallace

Problems with SuSe 9.3 installation in SATA Raid 1

Please someone help me!!!!!!!!!!! I want to install SuSe 9,3 professional edition in one desktop computer with two SATA hard disks connected in RAID 1 mode (security). Till now I can´t install SuSe on that system. During the installation SuSe shows me a message that says that SuSe don´t support his kind of RAID functionality (it also says that in kernel 2,4x some RAID chipset, like Promise, were supported but in kernel 2,6x they are not supported at all). I read that I should create a diskette with some modules (or something like that) in order my kernel and SuSe installation system detects the two disks as a RAID. I actually see in the partition section of SuSe installation program the disks as independiently units and not like a single one. The computer has an AMD 64 3200+ (core Winchester) microprocessor, motherboard ASUS A8V Deluxe and two SATA Western Digital hard disks (250GB each disk). The motherboard has two RAID controllers one made by VIA and other made by Promise. The RAID is connected to the Promise controller (Promise Fastrack 20378). The disk is actually partitioned in this way: Primary: 38 GB NTFS; WinXP 64 bits is installed in this partition Extended: 38 GB NTFS; WinXP 32 bits is installed in this partition 90 GB FAT32; Data The avaiable disk space is for SuSe (actually is unpartitioned) I need no to lose the data that I have on the three partitions that I have in my system (the other system are working well with the RAID and I have several GBs of data in the other partition) Please apologize me because my english is not enough good as I want it to be!!! Seeking recommendation for motherboard

Hi, List. My recent postings about the terrible problems I'm having trying to get a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 motherboard working with SuSE 9.3 have generated only 1 reply to the list. So I'll take a different approach and ask you for specific recommendations (manufacturer and model) of a motherboard that fits the following specifications: Requirements: 1) Accepts AMD 64-FX socket 939 or 940 processor 2) Upgradable to dual-core 3) PCI-e slot (video card) 4) Will accept DDR266 (PC2100) memory (and is upgradable to PC3200) 5) 4 memory slots (4 X 1GB capability) 6) At least 3 PCI expansion slots 7) on-board ethernet 8) on-board sound (5.1 would be nice!) 9) on-board USB 10) on-board firewire (expansion card is OK) I am going to have to exchange this Gigabyte board but my time to do so is limited, so I'd really appreciate your feedback very soon. Hello, All I jumped into OpenSuse at 10B3. I have used SuSE and SUSE for many years, and had recently become a little dishartened. I run SuSE 8.something on a PIII 133MHz laptop that does printing, DNS and DHCP serving, and 9.3 on an AMD-64 workstation. I also have a Pentium-M Dell I8600 laptop and a P4 2GHz desktop. SUSE 9.3 installed on the Dell, but performance was truly abysmal. On this machine, 10B3 was a non-starter because the IPW2200 wireless card was non-functional. OTOH, 10B4 installed and enabled everything (OK, I had to copy the IPW firmware manually from a shell terminal) and performance is excellent, as is battery life. It even suspends to disc without tweaking. It also resumes ;-) SUSE 9.3 failed to install on the P4 machine, which is a workstation that runs Linux and Windows XP as a client in VMWare. I messed with Fedora for a while, but it was not a good experience. It currently runs a mature Gentoo installation. However, I installed 10B3 on a second hard drive, and everything worked without problem, and the machine feels just as responsive as it does with Gentoo - with MUCH less hassle! I think that a lot of this is probably down to the use of gcc4, which, by many accounts, generates much better code than earlier versions. 9.3 stuck on 3.3.x, and from my Gentoo experience, I know for sure that software compiled with even 3.4.x subjectively feels much better than 3.3. The 64-bit machine is too important to mess with just yet, but I will certainly install an RC of B10 on one of its drives to test it out. In conclusion, I think that 10 is a great step forwaFrd. I felt that SuSE/SUSE were getting increasingly bogged down as the 9.x series "progressed". 10 seems to have completely turned this around. Another example of how opening software can produce great work. The only oddity to me is that as a workstation OS, it is not provided with a preemptable kernel. Again, from Gentoo, I know that this can make a subjective improvement in responsiveness. Well done all! Alistair PS. Incidentally, the oldest machine - the P3 - presently has an uptime of over 369 days. It does all DHCP and also does DNS caching for the LAN (using dnsmasq) Since my main workgroup laser printer is hung off its parallel port, it has handled many GB of PostScript in the last year, and has done so with intervention (by ssh - the keyboard and screen are inaccessible) probably about a dozen times. Its NIC is wireless, and there has never been a network reset. Not bad, SuSE!

A while back I was asking around about whether two separate swap partitions for a single Linux is safe or not. That it's safe is not debated. But I just want to point out that it does break *some* functionality. Observe the error message I got: kdialog - more than one swap partition - cannot suspend to disk -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... V_/_ and modern computing efficiency! :)

acrobat reader printing issue-SOLVED

I am running SUSE 9.3 and acrobat reader 7.01 . When I pull up a PDF file in acrobat and select the print button it prints to my dot matrix printer using /usr/bin/lp . I cannot see any settings in acrobat reader to set a default printer. My system default printer is my Epson 880, using Cups. What do I insert into that ( in the acrobat printing dialog box) to make it print using Cups, or how do I go about changing it to use Cups?? well, I answered my own question. I found an email that mentions lpr -P<printer-queue> and that did it: The CUPS client software installs an lpr replacement program that works with CUPS. The /usr/bin/lpr should work fine if you want to print to your default printer. And for the 'packman-i686' component, I see disagreement regarding 'totem' between some sort of "index" and the contents. By default these servers come configured on install of SLES9 http://sdb2.suse.de/download (Ireland) and http://sdb.suse.de/download (Germany) Are these the only 2 servers? Are there US mirrors? Also where do I setup credentials for these or any other servers? The account from Suse when we setup our corporate SLES9 licensing doesn't seem to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

Setting umask upon user login?

A few weeks ago I posted a message about umasks. I finally have a grasp on what it is and how it works. Something that I noticed (at least on my system) is when a user logs into the machine their umask is set to 022. How do I change this so that when any user logs into the system their umask is 002? I checked the /etc/bash.bashrc file and it really didn't help me out. I know how FC3 works but not too sure about SuSE. Thanks for any help. jay

I assume that you are talking about the netapplet when you say that you only see the ethernet connection. The netapplet utility is what you need to use to switch between networks in gnome. If it is not being picked up in the netapplet utility then your wireless card has problems being picked up properly. What card do you have? What build are you on? General routing question(s)...

Hi, I read already quite many of routing-related howtos and in fact I could make a new network of two:) comps with internet sharing and "public" folders. Tried with and without dhcp, both worked. This time I had a comp as router with a normal modem (ppp0) and network card (eth0), running SUSE 9.1. The other comp (desktop), SUSE 9.3) I put onto it directly and it could browse internet and see shared folders. So in fact everything worked, but from "desktop" I couldn't control the firewall-router's dial-in and/or disconnecting. In Kinternet I saw an option, that smpppd runs on another machine, but I couldn't connect to it even without firewall turned off on both systems. How I could teach Kinternet on "desktop", where to look or what I have to activate in order to do that on my router? From about January 2006 I will have ADSL-access with _more_ comps. The above strategy would work, but could I then use Kinternet still to control the router's connecting/disconnecting? And what's about one comp doesn't need net, initializes disconnecting, but other getting time-out for this reason ?! The last question concerns a hub I have. For the direct connection between two machines I used a normal patch-cable. I have a crossed-out as well, but where I will need it later: between the ADSL modem and router/firewall or between the hub and the router/firewall. I'm trying to set up an ftp site with my SuSE install. I'm using TFTP that came installed with SuSE 9.3. I went into YaST and enabled it and told it to configure the firewall appropriately etc. My question is that I have to connect from work to it using Secure FTP (SFTP). Is this possible with TFTP? If so where would I do the configuration of it? Thanks. jay

Screen Saver Problem in 9.3

Since I upgraded to 9.3, my screen saver has stopped working. Instead, the image of the desktop freezes and doesn't refresh unless I move the mouse. Moving the cursor immediately refreshes it. I have tested the screen saver and it looks good under the test. I click setup, ok, apply, ok. It still doesn't work. Any help greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

Can someone tell me the syntax for specifying an ODBC connection string? My machine is named, simply, linux. The database is named, simply, DB01.local and is served off of port 1521. Packages from a user and Packager perspective

Hello team A few days ago a discussion on the opensuse-optimize mailinglist was started about the future of our distro in regard to its building blocks, the packages. A suggestion was made to extend this discussion to this list and invite anyone on here to add their ideas. SUSE.de has already signaled that this would be a fantastic brainstorming opportunity for us, since once 10.0 is released there will be certainly decisions needed on how to proceed on that subject. The community build servers are not that far away (early next year) and that does force us to start thinking about things now and certainly more and more over the next months. This is our chance to define the future and effective growth of our distro. I have started a WIKI site on http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/Packager Which currently contains unsorted ideas from the current discussions. I would think that we should continue to add to that via a discussion here. I can if you want transfer those ideas to the wiki page or someone else can, I prefer the latter, or just do it yourself directly to the WIKI page. After 10.0 is released we can then start to structure those ideas into a more coherent and consistent form, which then could be integrated into things to come. Remember that packages are the building blocks of your distro and the way you will get packages as a user will certainly be defined and define also by how packagers create their packages. One goes hand in hand with the other. The future and innovation of this OS is going to define how quickly we can grow effectively and in a stable manner into the future and create enough innovative force to allow our distro to prevail in the commercial reality, which needs this innovation to give us the competitive edge. In my opinion this discussion needs to start now for us to have enough time to come to a clear consensus, convince most and create the foundations for years to come. Hello, Is there anybody else testing open-exchange? I try to install it using the howto for 9.3 ( http://www.ox-server.de/en/tutorial/ox_suse93.php ), but of course using precompiled binaries for 10.0 beta3. First, the experiences: All packages needed are included in inst-source and inst-source-java. I went through the 'necessary packages' list one-by-one, and nothing has to be downloaded. There was just one tricky one: jdom-1.0 is not a not seperate package, but part of the OX package... Most of the OX related packages are installed with the OX package as dependency. This web page lists some perl packages, which were not installed, I did not get to the point, where I could decide, if they are really needed :) Of course, related servers are not marked as dependency, so postgres, ldap server, imap server can be put on seperate machines. The postgres part went well, after I read the documentation more carefully :) And the problem part (probably, because it's the first time, I use LDAP): beech:/etc/openldap # slapadd -l /usr/share/open-xchange/init_ldap.ldif slapadd: dn="cn=users,ou=Groups,ou=OxObjects,dc=savanyu,dc=hu" (line=68): (65) no structural object class provided Did anyone got any further? metacity configuration

I like the way sawfish behaves on my old Debian box, so I've set my Suse 9.3 to use gnome and it's given me metacity. One feature that I use a lot is the ability to maximize a window vertically or horizontally and then restore it. On sawfish I can toggle these with mouse clicks on the maximize button of the window. Using gconf-editor, I've found window keybindings for metacity that let me maximize the window horizontally or vertically. But I can't find any binding to restore the window to its normal size afterwards. Nor keybindings to toggle the sizes. Nor mouse bindings for any of it. My googling hasn't found a lot in the way of documentation. Is there a way to do this? Or should I try some other wm? Thanks, Dave

Hi, I connected my usb2 pen drive (FAT32) to my laptop (Toshiba A70) running suse 10 beta4 and noticed that the speed of transfer to the drive was about 30Kb/s. Is there a problem with the usb 2 support in suse 10 beta4? Any help is appreciated. Steve Lamb

keyboard conflict GNOME

Dear list, my keyboard is not wroking properly under gnome. It is a uk keybopard and I configured it properly in YAST both under Hardware --> Keyboard and under Sax. It works fine on the virtual terminals and unde KDE. But in GNOME there seems to be a conflict. Igot it working when I used it after a fresh install. But since I copied the home directory from my laptop it does not work anymore. If I want to write only shft+key is working. Nothing else. I configured it already in the gnome control centre but nothing changes. Where can I configure it properly and check for the conflict. Which file do I have to modify?? Cheers, Ulrich

Problems viewing jpegs in konqueror

Hi list! Looking at some pictures with konqueror under beta4 I found that suddenly konqueror didn't display pictures any longer. However, when I switch from viewing the picture with "gwenview" to the internal viewer, then it works again. So I think it must be a problem the interaction of konqueror and gwenview. To reproduce it: -Create a big picture in GIMP. I got 4200x3000 pixels. -Render some plasma so the pic cannot be compressed to a few kB. -Save it as .jpg. Important: You must safe it in "progressive" mode! Now load the picture in konqueror. When the first part of the image starts appearing, immediately(!) press the "back" button. Now try to open another picture. On my system, this reproducably shows nothing for the second picture. Switch to internal viewer-> works. Close konqueror and start another one-> doesn't work. Start a new konqueror from an xterm-> gwenview works again. I would like to know if this is reproducable for other people as well, since it is rather strange. I also wonder if this is Suse-specific or a general KDE bug... Cheers nordi

Playing With Beta 4

I just wanted to report that OpenSUSE 10.0-Beta4 installed well on my recently acquired Dell C610 laptop. By comparison, I'm using SUSE Pro 9.2 on my primary box. Here's the good, the bad, and the untried, from my perspective: The Good: <> I do like the unified system menu (same menu across KDE/GNOME/etc.) <> Boot time is just 55 seconds from boot menu to login (5-7 secs slower than Ubuntu on the same laptop - not a problem <> Kodak CX6200 works out of the box (froze up my whole system on 9.2) The Bad: <> GNU Emacs and XEmacs in 2 different categories - make up my mind <> No PostgreSQL <> No XFce <> Changing the GNOME theme to "QT" in the Advanced Theme Settings dialogue caused a number of dialogues popping up about windows not responding, Nautilus wanting to be shutdown or restarted, etc. Sorry, I did not get all the specific messages. The whole session went wild, with me needing to use [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Bspace] to exit. <> Evolution won't let me create new contacts - or events/notes - nothing. strange!!! I did note the warning at intial launch about this being a beta. But one would think it would at least let me enter data! The Untried: <> Haven't tried my old Handspring Visor - if this works out of the box, I'll shout "hallelujah". <> Haven't played with the power management features yet, but so far, things are going fairly smoothly. <> Internet Connection - no DSL for my laptop at work (This is a Monday night or Tuesday task) These are just initial observations. Hi, there are some people answered my question. Thanks lots. But I still can't find the information what I need. So, here, I would like to say some details about my problem. I am using a test software (DOTs) to test databases performance. It's is only supported on linux platforms. It need to accesses the system level files (/proc/meminfo, /proc/stat etc.) and gets CPU, disk and memory usage information by parsing the system level files. I looked into the source code where it reads and parse the system level file. I found it read /proc/stat file to get cpu, disk and page information. It is supposed that in the /proc/stat file, there are some lines start with "cpu", "disk" or "disk_io", "page", and the program get the correspoding information from those lines. But in Suse 9.3(the version I am using), I used "cat stat" to show the content of the stat file, there are not disk_io and page_in_out information. So far, I found the page_in_out information in the vmstat file. But I still can not find the disk_io information.I searched all of the file under /proc/ folder, but no resule. The result of the test software I am tring to use is supposed to be something like following: <Total Execution Time> 0 hours 1 minutes. <Current Concurrent DB Connections> 1. <JDBC APIs> Total number of QUERY 2559. LILO Question

The backup software I use to backup my system is refusing to create a boot CD for my new 9.3 installation because it says that the combination of the initrd image, kernel, and other support files is greater than the maximum supported by LILO CDROM image of 2880 KB. Is this true, or is this software using some older version of LILO? Greg Wallace

This version of nemesis requires libnet-1.0.2a as the newer versions don't seem backward compatible enough. Nemesis is available at http://nemesis.sourceforge.net/index.html and Libnet 1.0.2a is available at http://www.packetfactory.net/libnet/dist/deprecated/libnet-1.0.2a.tar.gz After obtaining the libnet-1.0.2a source, unpack it as usual with tar -xzvf libnet-1.0.2a.tar.gz cd Libnet-1.0.2a cd include edit the libnet.h file. Go toward the end of the file and replace #error "byte order has not been specified, you'll need to #define either LIBNET_LIL_ENDIAN or LIBNET_BIG_ENDIAN. Look like Storix is correct in that the two kernel files have grown to be pretty large. As is the case for everything, sizes increase over time. I think they're in cahoots with the hardware folks to make sure we need to continually buy more and more. Actually, it's just a matter of more complexity requires more space. Regarding G4U, I looked into that but it wouldn't work for me the last time I looked. I have one internal hard drive and cannot boot from an external drive and G4U doesn't (didn't) support USB. How does one go about this? I'm a retard and have no idea how to fsck an encrypted slice. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've searched google but it keeps coming up with FreeBSD pages on the subject of encrypted partitions. -Ben -- Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

Andrea: I think OpenOffice should be left out. To me, this ONE CD system is for system purposes. May be there should be one for desktop purposes (openOffice, acrobat, mail, etc) and another with KDE plus unix tools, kernel headers, gcc/gcc+, bison and the likes. I installed the KDE version over the weekend for a SUPER test (standard KDE version) and ran into a situation that you might be able to help with. I needed to install some more packages into my 1_CD test system, so I downloaded the full version 10 Beta 4 iso's into my (another) SLES server. Then, after mounting the iso's -o loop, I copied them all into one single directory (/usr/share/empty) for "vstftp" access from the 1_CD test system. I found the media.1/media file empty in the full version I downloaded. So I populated this file. Then on my test system I changed the source to point to the SLES server via FTP. The yast2 on my test system could not find any of the packages. I did run the yast2-autoyast utility to create the description file. any suggestions? I am on board and learning as fast as I my limited abilities go. Knoppix, SuSE, etc are not ready for prime time desktop. Not because of technology but because most customers insist on Windows. Training might be a factor. I am not selling my Microsoft stock any time soon until the average user starts demanding something different from Windows. Will it ever happen, of course, but I will be my life that it won't take place in weeks to come. May be in years to come. I've just finished installing beta 4 on my system and, after applying the non-gpl kernel rpm, everything is working fine. It seems the previous solutions worked fine also, for beta 3 and such. My problem in diagnosing what is going on seems to be solely in the DI-624 wireless router I was using. It seems that the DHCP server on this item doesn't work quite right with Linux. My Windows machines can pull an IP off of it just fine, and while it reports it hands out IP's just fine to the Linux boxes, the Linux boxes are responding with statements like "network is not available" when I run dhcpcd. So while I was thinking this was a WPA issue, or a madwifi driver issue, this really was a "DHCP not working correctly" issue. After putting static IP's in the machines, everything worked wonderful I did not have to alter anything else besides installing the non-gpl kernel rpm. It was kind of humbling to have to use a Windows machine to go get this RPM though. So other than a bit of bruised pride, everything is great. Thanks again. Richard Lemon

Help backup Suse 9.2

I wonder if any one can help I have SuSE 9.2, and I am trying to use yast2-backup from yast but when I try it doesn't give me the choice of tape only CD, floppy, and ZIP I can backup from tape with the command "find / -depth -print | cpio -ocvB -O /dev/st0" but it backs up everything and when I have tried to restore, it just corrupts the system ( I guess it restores files it shouldn't) so I thought the yast backup might be better. Any help would be greatly appreciated I have looked through the documentation and even tried on the web including the Suse center John.
