Wireless Under 10.0RC1

Hello I installed the first OpenSuse beta when it came out and then dumped it when I was unable to get my NetGear WG511 (prism54) wireless card working. I let several versions go by and then today decided to try again with 10.0 RC1. Same issue... my wireless still doesn't work. This time I did an upgrade from 9.3 (which was working fine). The card gets the firmware loaded, it gets ifconfigged properly, and it looks normal with ifconfig. However, I cannot reach any place on the network, I get network unreachable errors. Also, the following lines loop in /var/log/messages: kernel: prism54_hostapd - len=48 kernel: eth1: Caught WPA drop unencrypted request kernel: prism54_hostapd - len=48 kernel: eth1: Caught WPA supplicant set WPA IE request kernel: eth1: WPA IE Attachment was set The green light on the card is on, and the yellow data light flashes, but pinging other systems on the lan results in: Destination host unreachable I do have a default route set to 192.168.0.1 which is my router. I bet if I downgrade this system to 9.3 again, the wireless will work again with the same configuration I have. Is wireless still not working at this late stage of 10.0's development? Kinstaller and Yast

Hi Does anybody know if Kinstaller is included in suse 10? (Yes I know it's for us point and drool people) Also I would like to know if there are any planned improvements in installing applications with yast. 80 % of the time it works fine, But the rest of the time it can't handle the dependencies. -- Mvh Kenneth Aar

Audacity for 10.0?

Hi All, I sometimes use Audacity for (shocker!) audio projects, but my momentum with the package has been interrupted: 8.2 - worked great 9.0 - worked great 9.2 - unsolved hardware/kernel issue; sound artifacts (this system) 9.3 - worked great 10.0 - not available in Betas 1-4 or with RC1 I checked the various apt repositories linked from opensuse.org and, unless I somehow overlooked it, I didn't see a 10.0 package available. Does anybody know if one is currently available or in the pipeline? Or should I just try building it myself? For the record, the 9.3 rpm has a dependency conflict/problem under RC1. Problem with wireless card

I have a wireless card (PCMCIA) Dlink G630 (B1), running in SuSE 9.3. The card is recognizied, but I cannot connect to internet. The authentication metod is WEP (128 bits). I configure whith YOU and i try to connect whith Kinternet. I have not had good results, apparently appears as associate but it does not obtain from router (DHCP) the IP. Also them comment that previously with other router with wep of 64 bits I could make work it. Hey, all -- An issue that I've run into a number of times reared its ugly head again today, and I'm wondering whether anyone has a better solution than I... To wit: Perl has many, many modules. Some have their current versions in RPM form; some have outdated versions in RPM form; some just have no version at all in RPM form. However, all are available by way of CPAN. Since I use a number of programs that are written in Perl and that aren't SuSE-specific, I often find myself in need of modules that aren't available as RPMs at all, or which require newer versions of a dependency than what's available through YaST. By necessity, I've taken to ignoring the Perl modules in YaST, unless they're absolutely necessary (ie, the YaST dependencies). I install everything through CPAN, and then use the .src.rpm files to build a binary rpm that doesn't depend on the RPM perl modules. But I figure there has to be a better way. Is there a place where all the missing RPMs in the main distro go to hide? Some other somewhere at which I should be looking? Or is the CPAN-with-modified-other-packages option the best that's available? - Ian

Check your cabling and your card's sitting in its slot. I am thinking either the cables is suspect or the hd controller is not working properly. Hdparm your drive to see if you are having a flakey drive. So check to see if you have proper termination on that drive. SUSE 10 RC 1 shutdown shows junk screen

Does anyone else have this problem? I searched http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse/2005-Sep/ for the word "shut" and got no results so am posting. I am running a DVD (thanks houghi) install of SUSE 10 RC 1 on a Pentium 4 3 GHz system with Intel 915 GAV motherboard. No separate graphics card except what is built into the motherboard. I didn't have any problems while installation. It even didn't ask me for the screen size this time. (9.3 did.) Whenever I shutdown, I see junk screen with the bottom half of the screen with random colours and some while text on the top left of the screen with the green text (presumably "done" but I'm unable to actually read it) on the top right, but all that text is again obscured by junk graphics. Can anyone please help? This is not a serious problem in terms of obstructing usage or anything, but it's still some disorder... -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... problem with online-update

If I run the graphical version, it ALWAYS hangs after retrieving the package information from the mirror (any mirror). If I run it in text mode, I can install the updates 1 out of 5 times, and that one time, it usually hangs after installing the packages ... I had to kill the process y2base taking 99.9% of CPU ... Even after rebooting, I still get the same behaviour. Is there anything (lock files, directoriews, etc) I should look at clearing ? I get 1400 lines of logs in /var/log/Yast2/y2log just by starting yast2 online_update ... then another 2900 lines when I click "Next" ... --Coutch

Differences between SUSE Linux 10.0 and OSS 10.0?

Hello! I think this is a FAQ - but I could not find a clear answer from Novells or open SUSE's web sites. What are the differences between Novell SUSE Linux 10.0 and Open SUSE Linux OSS 10.0? >From the names I would suspect that the OSS -version only contains open source software. But what does this mean for end user? Am I right if I guess that regards to MP3's or DVD's or PDF-documents (and so on) nothing works in the OSS version? And the end user must go hunting for some under ground repositories of RPM's to get the system working? Does even the display adapter drivers work? Sorry, if this is too much of a FAQ - if there is a page the has this information in the clear (I mean, package list isn't quite what I had in mind), please point me in that direction. -- HG.

To those who've been playing around with 10.0, has SUSE made the improvements necessary to be able to upgrade from 9.3 to 10.0, or do you still need to do a fresh install? Thanks! I searched the Opensuse Linux 10 HCL/Laptops list at http://www.opensuse.org/HCL/Laptops but could not find anything about the two highend mobile workstations that initial looked interesting from * Dell Precision M70 * Fujitsu Siemens Celsius H230 Neither a serach on Suse Portal HCL or on Novell Sertified had some information. Maybe this hardware model are too new? This surprise me, because at least Fujitsu Siemens tells in their "Insight" paper that they "early defined Linux (beside Windows and Solaris), as one of their strategic operating system, like no other vendor in Europe. Celsius workstations (like Lifebook Notebooks and Scenic PCs) are ready for use under Linux". In the datasheet for Celsius H230 both Redhat and Novell Linux is listed among the OS (certification on request). I also looked for IBM Thinkpad T42p and T43P, which according to the HCL lists above should run Linux ok. The highend TP43p is without doubt very powerful, but also (too) high priced; about twice the price or more than for the above mentioned Dell M70 and FSC H230. I was just wondering whether houghi's makeSUSEdvd can be used (with slight modification) for creating installation DVDs out of the CDs of other distros too? Just curious, not that I'd want to leave SUSE. :) Oh, and I put this on the list as I thought others may also be interested in houghi's (and others') answer(s). -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... packman missing lots of x86_64 rpm's

Not sure if this is the place to post, but packman is missing lots of rpm's for the x86_64, I cannot install all the kde rpm's unless you have them built for x86_64, it only looks like you have the i586 arch for them. Please could someone update these. Thanks Cameron

From 5xISO's to 1xDVD ISO

The version I am talking about is SUSE 10.0 OSS RC1. I used Houghi's makeDVD...sh to create an iso that fits in a DVD. It created the ISO OK and the DVD starts the installation properly but I did not go through the entire install process: my intention was not to create a DVD for a new installation but to consolidate the 5 CD's into one DVD so when I use yast for installing new software, I only have to use the one DVD. So I went to yast on an installed SUSE 10.0 OSS RC1 system (installed from the 5xCD's from original 5xISO's download) and change the SOURCE of Software to use the DVD. Move it up so this new source will be on top of the list and ahead of the CD's (my PC has both devices, a DVD/reader and a CD/reader). Then I put the Houghi's created DVD into my DVD device. Then I went to yast: software install. When I try to install a new game, yast wants me to add the 4th DVD. I checked the .../media.1/media file and Houghi's shell did change it properly to indicate "1" Device. what could be the flaw in my thinking? Hi, I am using suse 9.3 x86_64 with a asus A8N-SLI mainboard. None of the suspend/stand-by options works at the moment. The machine is shutting down, but when it is being switch on again it restart normally with some fs transactions replayed. Has anyone any hints?! Thanks a lot, pb

I'm assuming that you're trying to install either 9.3 or 10.0RC. In which case, you're going to have problems booting off of a 9.0 CD and trying to run the install. Because you're booting off of the 9.0 CD, you're using the 9.0 installation system, and both the content and the format of the SuSE distribution tree have changed since then. The installation system is looking for some information in the wrong place. Config questions on amd64

Wow. Linux is ready for the desktop....but not on amd64. Gettig this laptop up and running has been a REAL PIA. But, I digress. Any tips for installing ATI drivers on this thing? I've read the past posts of every distro on earth and don't seem to be able to get my 200M up and running. Installing libdvdcss seems to be a real joy. I downloaded the source and installed it. But, Kaffeine won't look at the DVD drive b/c it is the special SUSE version. Do I have to recompile kaffeine? I deleted everything in ~/.kde3/share/apps/kaffeine and restarted kaffeine. It recognizes libdvdcss, but refuses to use it. So, I figured I'd just install xine (gui) as a work-around. No dice. It fails out telling me I don't have permisions to view my dvd. I've never had this much trouble getting that to work. But, the kicker is this. I really like the program basket. It's not on the CD's, but the source rpm is on novell's FTP site for 10. So, I download it and try to rpmbuild. Not surprisingly, I get some dependency errors yast. No problem, I fire up YAST and start installing them. I expected this. What I did NOT expect was to not find the devel package for gettext OR the update-desktop-files rpms. Now this really pissed me off. I can't find these anywhere. I don't mind compiling, but this is ridiculous! Alright, I'll stop my rant there. This laptop has annoyed me enough for this evening. -andy

Hi, I installed te 64bit release of 10RC1 onto a new server yesterday and it appears that I haven't got phpMyAdmin. A few searchs through YaST appear to indicate that its not even available as an option to install from he package lists. I just attempted to install a wine based application including crossover office (application is Gupta Team Developer. Bought it at Linuxworld San Francisco (any input re Gupta would be appreciated). My machine came to a grinding halt. I had to reboot while waiting several minutes for init to send term signals to processes. Before rebooting, I had this mime error and after rebooting also: Little message boxes with the following titles: sorry amoroK Kate KDE panel Kdesktop and I thing Open Office Message in box is: could not find mime type application/octlet-stream ideas? Dual Videocard under SuSE 9.3

Hi there List, I'm a bit puzzled and maybe someone can explain something to me.. I'm running SuSE 9.3 on two videocards. One is a NVidia AGP and the second is a Matrox Millenium II PCI. Sax is telling me that 3D on the NVidia is not possible, slowing down my desktop. My question is: Why? It is using two different drivers to run the two cards Right? Or am I missing something? kde 3.5 beta

Just to let you know, I've just upgraded to kde-3.5beta succesfully. The rpms are available via the apt repository and the kde-unstable compenent. A simple 'apt dist-upgrade' did the trick. KMail crashing

Hi. I have an AMD64 -based system running SUSE professional 9.3, no problems at all until updating to the current kernel via YOU. After that update and reboot, I can no longer use KMail. It crashes immediately after getting my password for my POP3 account (same results via KWallet or direct) and trying to go to the network. I tried a clean configuration of kmail in a new account, exact same results. Any ideas, please help! Cannot Start KDE (SOLVED)

Hi Alfredo, Yes, I've checked the .xinitrc file and it contains no entry (blank)... so i search for .xinitrc.template and then i copy it to overwrite the blank .xinitrc and I restarted my system and and try to login again. Donn, I did briefly think of using an external modem, but this is for my son and his wife who are not computer literate and like a tidy system which I have with my own T21. Until recently, I used external modems exclusively for my desktop PCs. I now have broadband via an ethernet/wifi router, so when using the T21 at home I use a wifi/broadband link. Router is a Netgear DG834GT Wifi card is Netgear WG511T Operating system is SUSE v9.1 Works well for a 'g' link (54MB/sec), but have not yet tried 'ndiswrapper' etc to go for 108Mb/sec. Detecting a USB drive

Hey Group; I have commented earlier about the lack of SuSE9.3 and SuSE 10 not being able to detect a USB drive unless it was ON for a longer period of time. Lets say 1 hour. Well to that end- I have tracked out the problem. It appears to be a drive problem with the HD bios. Using " /sbin/getcfg -d . -f hwcfg- -- /dev/sda " a list of HWD config information is reported. Cannot enter KDE

Hi, I have SUSE Linux 9.3 as my OS. Recently I cannot enter my all desktop system (KDE or anything else) My last screen on SUSE is a login screen (GUI), but when I enter user & password it just shows clock icon... and then back to the login screen again. PPC speed

Hello, I did some benchmarks on a 2.6Ghz Xeon and a Pegasos2-PPC using ab2 (apache bench) and sysbench (mysql) on SUSE Linux and Gentoo. On the Xeon workstation there was not much difference, SUSE and Gentoo were head to head, Gentoo usually (but not always) 5-10% faster. The real supprise came the PPC platform: Gentoo was serving static webpages about 2x faster, and sysbench was about 1.6-1.8 faster on Gentoo. Is there any optimalisation in the SUSE packages? Gentoo packages were compiled with the following CFLAGS in /etc/make.conf (this Gentoo was preinstalled on my ODW, I just refreshed sources and rebuilt it without changing settings): CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=G4 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe" Bye, Peter

Winmodem problem

I have a problem with an IBM Thinkpad T21 which I have just obtained for my son. It contains a 3Com ethernet/winmodem device and so far I have not been able to discover a Linux driver for the 3Com winmodem. The ethernet part is working OK. I've established that the winmodem does work by setting it up under MS Windows 98 + extra drivers. This is a bit of a letdown as I already have a T21 (ie outwardly the same model as above), but this one contains an Intel ethernet/winmodem device. The modem part is a Lucent winmodem for which there is a driver and it works OK. Any suggestions? Ken Hough

Networking in Xen

After giving up on the YAST tool for creating Xen VMs I managed to roll my own and get it booting without too much effort. The problem I have is how to configure the networking in the VM, I've tried specifying the MAC address and bridge details in the config file but I can't work out how to actually configure the virtual interface card in YAST. I see on the opensuse site that in bridging mode dom-N is currently not setup properly, how do I do this manually ? Hey SuSE guys! What happened to the kdelibs3-art package that the latest build of kdelibs3-devel needs to install? There is another file "rdnsresponder", I believe it asked for, which I am going to assume is in the kdelibs3-art package? Question? If you run SuSEconfig it reads scripts in /sbin/conf.d which reads the contents of scripts in /etc/suseconfig. The files in /etc/suseconfig supply variables for /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.script. Problem is, it seems in the passed that more scripts were available. Therefore things like the /etc/suseconfig could supply more variables. - like apache2. I'm about to move a fully functional system from a box with ONE IDE drive to a box with TWO IDE drives configured as RAID-1 (mirror) via Linux software. Any ideas on how I can do that? Normally a disk to disk would be to use dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb, but that wouldn't work here I guess..

But I think I cant find any of those files (k3b-mad, kdemultimeda3-mad and stuff) in packman. I just found mad, can I still play mp3 without any other 'mad' aplication ? Does anyone know of any remote desktop software, similar to gotomypc, that I could host on my own server? What we are basically looking for is a free/inexpensive solution that requires very little setup on the side of the PC to be controlled, so that we can do remote support from any location. Ideally somethng that doesnt require firewall configuration. UltraVNC has a pretty good single click config, that does what we want on the user end, but from our side we still need to config the firewall. Is there such a beast in the OSS/Linux world? Hi, I get apcupsd source from www.apcupsd.com. Get version 3.8.5 which I think is most suitable for SLSS8. Configure and make went OK. But when I did make install I get error: "Sorry seem that you don't have the etc/rc.config file. You may heed to check your SuSE installation as this is very dangerous" Is this mean that I 3.8.5 version is not suitable for SLSS8? Or it is error in sources? How can I correct this error? Audrius

Hi all ! some time ago we have talked about the downlaod system "jigdo" and if it would be another good part for users of other OS to have those system to get a copy of openSUSE. as a few of us siad it would not so easy to handle that system on a windows machine, I've said that I could make a nice GUI frontend for windows. and. I'm working on it - it is nealy at 80% up and running. ok ok, making a GUI frontend for some tools shouldn't take to mutch work so, what I'm working on all the time ? the tool will be a "all inclusive" tool for a jigdo download for openSUSE. what does it do at this point: - after the tool is started, it checks if it runs from inside the cache-folder of internet explorer - if so, the user has klicked on "run" instead of "download to" after he has hit the download link of the tool. so the tool will akk the user to make a copy on a save place on his HD, ask for the path, makes that copy, and restart itself from there. if the user don't make that copy, he will be informed that the tool is not be able to run from the cache-folder, it will be terminated. - after starting from inside a folder other then the cache-folder, it will look if it was started for the first time - if so, it will need some more files, and therefore a wizzard will be started: there the user will be able do download all the stuff that is needed. --> a contrilfile, that tells the tool where it will get all the other stuff --> the binaries of jigdo, as the main part of the download system --> the jigdo- and the template-file, the second part of the system --> all things will be downloaded automaticly, placed on a save place, and expaded to have a working system. the configuration will be saved as a result, and used next time. --> the GUI: if all things are loaded and the config is created, the tool will start in the "GUI mode", where to user only has to hit the "start jigdo"-button, and the download will be running. there is already a nice "feature" around the controlfile: as I have only access to a small place on the web for http-download with a small number of traffic, it is able to define a sort of "redirect" to another place, and the tool will follow that redirect to download a second controlfile ( or one or more redirects, as needed). there is no need to have any "server knowlegde" to create a hardcoded redirect via the server - it needs only a new URL in the ini-style controlfile. I think in a day of two, the GUI will be ready. but I will need some things_ - a place to put it on ( and also the other things, like the controlfile, the jigdo-binaries, etc). I've read about the server from Adreas, so I think that would be a "nice place". - some guys or girls still running some Win-PCs to make some more tests ( I only tested it on WinXP inside a vmware-box, and only with a 6 MBit connection to the internet - what will happen on a dialup connection, maybe with a modem ? [...] ) - at this point, the jido-file and template only creates the small iso to make a boot-cd - after the final version of openSUSE 10. OSS will be aviable at the 6th of october, the correct jigdo-file, the jigdo-file, the template etc etc has to be created and placed on the right place. I'm able to handle that also, but it would be nice to get some help about that topic. - I've never made programs for the public - what will be "needfull", what will be "nice" next: --> what about the source of the tool ? --> what about the "art work" ? Well, I tried the suggestions but it didn't seem to help. Hello from Adam: You will choosing between the newest kernel and support code vs the prior generation of kernel code and support code. After the install, it would be wise to then download all the patches via Yast Update for most security updates. If you have the newest hardware, there should be more support for your devices. Dvd burners are supported by both, so you should not have a problem. If you are going to dup copy-protected dvds, you will need to download some other libraries. Mentioned in the below mentioned URL, there is new code from OpenSUSE. What is not exactly explained except as a selling point. I am waiting for the newest version of SUSE . And I am wiser. I plan to pull my hard drive with 9.3 and install a fresh larger drive in my workstation. I then plan a new install rather than a upgrade. A new install will be faster and i will then transfer my old data by hanging the old drive on USB. Am running suse9.3 and self-built kernel 2.6.12.5 I just got a USB2->IDE adaptor and plugged it in. Didn't get recognised first time, disk and adaptor must have not been ready, replugged and it appeared as /dev/sda. Anyway, I partitioned the drive and happened to notice a sequence of errors in /var/log/messages: Sep 22 17:48:40 ip30 kernel: program parted is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO Is this problem known, or have I discovered a new bug, would it have been fixed in opensuse10? I did get it working after some changes to the firewall configuration. Here is a line from my /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2: FW_SERVICES_EXT_RPC="mountd nfs nfs_acl nlockmgr portmap status" I am no longer running an NFS server so I can't be 100% sure that the above is enough. How do we detect and control these errant processes? Hi all ! with this eMail I will be back to the openSUSE project. you may remember me as someone who has talked here about jigdo, kathrina, multimedia support in openSUSE and so on. the last three weeks I was mostly ill - to mutch work in to less time, so I get a sort of "burn out" and had to cancle a lot of thinks. it depends on my daily business, but also my private things like all the tests of openSUSE. here are the last facts in short: - I couldn't solve the problem of having two different nvidia-cards working with openSUSE. I've also tryed the tip of Andreas to have both AGP- and PCI-card having the same chipset - still that doen't work :( even harder: the new PCI-card crashed my system as soon as I tryed to open a window on that destop. that happens with opebSUSE, all betas and the RC1, but also with SuSE 9.3 pro, my main OS on this PC. result: now I have only one card and one monitor, to keep the system stabile and running. - jigdo download for openSUSE: I've promissed to make a nice GUI for this downlaoder - and I'm working on it. more to that topic in the next mail from me. - hurrican Kathrina: after my eMail about Kathrina on this list I got a lot emails - exactly 68. some nice eMails, but also some bad eMails. 57 of them so bad, that I need to say a few more words to those poster: "you may be here on a mailinglist, and you may think you may be a part of the community. but you will not. you will allways be only a reader or writer to the list, and the real feeling of beeing a part of a social conducted member of it like to be part of a great familie - thats something you will never touch." I su to root and change hdc and make the owner root and the premissions 660 Then after the next time I reboot, I connect as a different user (not root or jim), I then look at /dev/hdc and its owner is back to jim and permissions is 600. if this other user tries to use growisofs and write to /dev/dvdrecorder i get a permisson denied. if I su to root, reset hdc's owner back to root and set permissions to 660, this other user can then write to /dev/dvdrecorder. durring the boot process the owner and permissions are changed. LG Flatron L1510S user?

Is there anyone who uses an LG Flatron L1510S TFT monitor with SUSE 9.3? If so, please could you give me some advice on how to get decent looking fonts on it? Preferably what your settings are. I have spent many hours trying everything I can think of to get good looking fonts, without success. There were no problems with 9.2 nor with any other distros I have used/tried. Just 9.3. I am very reluctant to spend money purchasing version10 if there is still this problem. If no one uses this monitor, perhaps I can post a general request for help. SuSE Pro friendly "online backup"/"electronic vaulting" providers (seeking recommendations)

My co. runs SuSE 9.3 Pro for a whole bunch of different things, currently backing them up to tape locally. We're starting to look at backing up remotely, to a contracted provider. I've looked at a number of services, and have gotten the answer (quite often!) that they "only support RHES 3". Meaning that stuff gets stuck in /usr/local, or kernel modules are built based on the kernel versions current in that distro. But I figure that there has to be somewhere out there who supports SuSE Pro 9.3... Ideally, I'm looking for a provider who has an RPM install available of their agent, whatever that may be, which has the usual SuSE alterations in it (ie, not using /usr/local, putting docs in /usr/share/doc/packages/xxxx, and the like). Alternately, a provider who has a binary installer that allows paths to be specified... Anyone have any knowledge or experience they can share? Thanks, Ian

Xen Kernel problem (Compilation and DMA problem)

Hi, I try to use XEN, but have some problems with getting it started on my machine. (My settings are listed at the bottom). My first problem is that if I boot into Xen the kernel hangs while booting, such that I have to do a hard reset. It doesn't hang always at the same place, but most often around the time when suse wants to start the suse firewall. However XEN boots when I turn DMA of. (ide=nodma). This is very annoying since I need DMA, so what can I do? I read somewhere that this could be caused by the generic IDE driver and one should compile only the specific IDE (PIIx...) driver into the kernel. I tried this but run into the following problem. I use the standard configuration file from Suse for Xen as placed in /boot/config-2.6.11.4-21.8-xen and changed some options (mainly only the IDE driver modules.) (make ARCH=xen menuconfig; make ARCH=xen all) However after compiling for a long time I see the following output. Hi, I downloaded suse 10.0 RC1 and I tried to installed on my PC but the installer hangs in creating initrd step and couldn't finish installation then I reinstall my suse 9.3 again. to recover my computer. another failure occured in installation is libxml.. I am sure to correctness of cd but not about its download. because I download iso files on a laptop then I copied those files through network to my desktop computer which doesn't have connection to internet. what is the problem? -- Mohammad do you Python?!!

Hello List, when i'm trying to use the aRts-output plugIn of amaroK i get, as soon i try to play anything, a Message that the artsd has chrashed. Going back to xine-output everthing works fine aslong i don't change the output device in the xine-output configuration from "auto" to "aRts". Is this somthing i can fix by myself, or is this Part of the following known bug ... "KDE uses a backported KDEMM multimedia system. Most important applications has been ported from aRts to kdemm. Translation pack for kde not automagically selected during install/setup

Why is it that every kde distro I've tried, I have to manually select the translation pack for kde (in my case kde3-i18n-nb)? I select my language during the initial install, and only the yast translations gets selected. I have to enter the "advanced" part of package selection during the install. Now this is not a problem since I know what to do to fix it, but for first time linux users figuring it out may take some time. Plus the fact booting a OS that is for the most part not translated gives out a shady impression. Iznogood

Dear SuSE users: The following information regards to SUSE 9.3 with KDE 3.4.0 and these samba packages: yast2-samba-client-2.11.5-3 yast2-samba-server-2.11.14-3 kdebase3-samba-3.4.0-28 samba-3.0.13-1.1 samba-client-3.0.13-1.1 I have configured samba server via YaST2 and set up shared folders. In the Samba configuration panel I checked the "open port in firewall" option. Still when I want to open my shared folders through the Network Brosing icon -> SMB Shares I get nothing, ie an empty window which says: no item - no files - no folders. If I turn off firewall in YaST2 Firewall Configuration panel I can browse my shared folders. So what should I do? I want firewall to be on but still need samba. general question about banners

Hello all, In an attempt to prosecute unauthorized users who improperly use government computers, we are required to have a warning banner displayed before any user can login, in my case to Linux workstations. Is there a way to do that in SuSE. I know /etc/motd and/or /etc/issue could be used for network access but what about something like a window displaying the warning message with an "I ACCEPT" button right in front of graphical logon screen? Super RC1 install: comments and questions

I have an HP Pavilion ze4500 that I'm using to try out the release candidate, my experience has been mostly positive so far, although not without problems. Now that it's done I have a couple of problems I haven't been able to resolve. I liked the simplicity of the one click settings, but I found it too hard to use when manipulating files. I used the simplest method I knew to change the settings back which was the KDE desktop settings wizard. As a result, I lost the Suse icons. I was very disappointed that there isn't a Suse icon theme or overall KDE theme for the default. Is there anyway to get the Suse icons back once they've been changed? I was very impressed that the installer chose the correct 1400x1050 resolution, but somehow the fonts are rather large. Has anyone else noticed this, or is there some screen metric setting I'm missing? The fonts say they are 10 point, but this is the largest 10 points I've ever seen. Lastly YaST is undoubtably the crown jewel of Suse, but it can often be unresponsive. It's hung on me a couple of times starting services and such, but most annoying is when it can't connect to an online repository. No amount of clicking 'abort' will stop it. Is there a timeout setting somewhere or an elegant way to handle this? Thanks in advance for any help. I've enjoyed Suse so far and I'm looking forward to recommending it to people as a good introduction to the world of Linux. Sander

Akamai hosts images, etc, in a geographically load-balanced cluster of servers. A site like The New York Times, or CNN, or...might host an image there, referencing http://a###.X.akamai.net/, and when your machine requests that image the IP address Akamai returns will be the server geographically closest to you. It's a way of speeding up load time for media content, be it images, downloadable files, movies, or whatever else. They're very heavily used. Folks, I've been digging into why I cannot see my 2nd SCSI disk when I do fdisk or bring up the yast partitioner. I did a yask hardware info on my PC and it tells me my 2nd SCSI HD is "notready" which might be the problem. Question is I have partitions on this drive and can copy and write and mount it. Possibility to get important changes since 10.0 RC1?

Dear Suse-People, I can understand your decision not to release the internal Release Candidates RC2 and so on for public. I think in this hot phase of the release cycle, you guys have much more important things to do. But I have one question: Is it possible to get only the MOST important fixes and packages since RC1? To make it clear: I don't mean a complete release, but I mean updated packages which fixed critical bugs or important packages like kernel and so on. Is it possible to make this packages available for public? How about putting them in Yast Online Update? Or, if this is not possible, what about releasing them inofficially in the apt-repositary "suse-people"? IIRC, in Beta-phase there were some updates through YOU, even for RC1 there was a new kernel for short time while currently all corresponding directories are empty. LPI seems to be the industry standard. There are vendor specific ones from Red Hat, Novell, etc. However, LPI its vendor neutral and widely recognized. ATI drivers-saved

Hi! Again me with new ATI drivers. Now it works. IMO something is wrong with sax2. What i did: first i run sax2 with 0=radeon and was O.K., restart computer, start KDE and under KDE run sax2 with 0=flgrx option. And work. If i run sax2 with 0=fglrx option sax choose resolution 1280x1280 which was to high for rn in console on my computer. Thanks to everybody for help. Mitja

MP3 still will not play

I have installed the media package in total. Afterwards i downloaded the codecs from mplayer.hq (the all codecs package) and copied it into usr/lib/win32. Still neither Kaffeine, nor Xine nor Juk will play any MP3 file. What am i doing wrong? PowerDVD for Linux

Hello everyone, This question is mainly for the Novell employees watching this list: What do you think about including "PowerDVD for Linux" on the box version? I'm using it now (got it from TurboLinux which I bought some months ago) and I think it's great. It's the first official (legal) DVD player for Linux. I think it will be a great add-on to the retail version. I know it will cost you (licenses) but you can pass that on to the consumer. The same with an mp3 decoder? After all, for those that don't want to pay for these extra closed-source/non-free software, there's always the OSS version available. BTW...I know there's Mplayer and Ogle out there that we can use for DVD playbay (although not legally in some countries)...I'm just curious about the PowerDVD possibility. Samba problems mounting DFS share

Okay, I'm stumped. I've spent hours Googling around and searching archives and FAQs and HOWTOs, and I haven't found anything describing the problem I'm having. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Background: I was trying to connect my 9.1Pro laptop to a share on my employer's all-M$ network, and having trouble. I could connect to the 'top' of the share, but if I went more than two subdirectories deep, Konq would give me a "does not exist" error, and smbclient spat out a weird error code. Googling that error code gave me *one* hit that suggested it was a problem related to DFS. I'd never even heard of DFS before, but since the top-level share was named dfsroot$, I figured I'd hit the jackpot. YAST said my Samba was up to date, but apt dl'd and installed a newer version. Voila! I could now access the entire DFS directory tree via smbclient. But Konq still won't see it. That confuses me, b/c I thought that Konq routed its SMB:// requests through Samba. But I let it slide, since with smbclient I could still get access. Now, though, I need to try and mount that same share -- we're doing a lot of groupware-ish stuff on files located on the network, and the general company standard is to have the DFS share mounted on every computer as a particular drive letter. I'd never used smbmount/mount-t smbfs before, but it didn't look too hard. So I created a mount point on my machine that matched the drive letter all these company URLs point to, and did a mount command. The result, no matter how many varations on mount I try, always comes up like this: WARNING: The "printer admin" option is deprecated cli_negprot: SMB signing is mandatory and we have disabled it. 12341: protocol negotiation failed SMB connection failed I tried setting 'client signing = yes' in my smb.conf, but that didn't help either. I eventually found hints that SMB signing can be turned off in W2k3 servers, which is what the company is running. Then I found a suggestion to use cifs instead of smbfs. *That* got the share mounted -- whoopee! But... Konq still couldn't get below the top level of the share. It kept giving me "does not exist" errors. And cd'ing to the mount point in a shell worked, but doing an ls gave me "permission denied," even though I was using the correct username and password (which work if I'm using smbclient), and cd'ing down one level blindly changed the ls response to "Stale NFS file handle" (which can't be valid, b/c none of the conditions that error message is described as being related to have happened to the network). I couldn't cd any lower than one layer, even though I know this network tree like the back of my hand. And just to ice the cake, I can't umount the blasted thing -- I keep getting a busy error. I combed the samba.org site and samba ml, and came up with only two mentions of this problem, both posted about 10 months ago, and neither one ever responded to. I'm stumped. All I can think of is that this W2k3 server setup has something going on that makes using anything other than smbclient impossible. Since smbclient still works, I can get by (but going twenty directories deep is hard on my carpal tunnel, let me tell you!), but I really wish I understood what's going on.

Hi, I was just wondering why my timezone is set wrong. So I wanted to correct it via the preferences page. Whatever I filled into that field, after pressing SAVE PREFERENCES and changing to the timezone-setting again the time is still wrong. Anyone experienced that to? Anyone knows a solution? Hi All, Couple of days ago I upgrade suse 10.0 beta3 to suse 10.0 rc1, and i have installed kmultimedia-mad and several mad's file + wincodec. So i can play mp3 songs from amarok or kaffein. And then I reinstall (fresh install) this computer. Then I add packman.iu-bremen.de in my source installation. But when I try to find kdemultimedia3-mad, it's not there. I try to find another mad files, but i think they're gone. Wincodec is not ther either. Can someone tell me what's wrong with packman ? How do your drives jumpered on the ide cable? If they are drive select, change them to master/slave and check that the right module is talking to them. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes I just hang one drive per controller and that problem is solved that way. What does the dmesg output say about the ide controllers and the drives? How about the lsmod? Hello :-) one of the things we need to do in the future, and it's not trivial, is to give a clue of the changes from a distribution to the other (that is, for example from SUSE 10.0 to 10.1). I don't mean only say "we got kde 5.8.3", but what this changes for the user. For example, I'm a pretty heavy photo user. I mostly use Gimp, but if I do many photos I make few edits (I like to make good photos with the camera, not the computer). So I don't at all master Gimp (nor Photo shop, for that matter). this morning, to show yesterday night photos to my wife, I opened Konqueror but the default display is not very convenient, so I right clic and discovered "showphoto" - said to be the photo application for kde. and not only there is a viewing mode extremely friendly but also many photo modification very simple. that is to say Linux is moving still very fast and it's easy to miss interesting apps, or interesting enhancements to apps (I have yet to know what Gimp 2 have more than Gimp 1 - I'm sure they are, but could not find time to search) So a "enhancement" page on the wiki would be very nice. You can do it in software or hardware. Hardware is actually adding a switch with a y power adapter and toggle the cd-drives. They will then reboot their internal controllers. You should see whether the jumpers are correctly set on the back of the drives or whether or not they are sitting on the same ide bus and separate them? Are the ide cables working properly? Sometimes swapping out to a fresh 80 pin cable makes the problem go away. What does dmesg output looks like? OOo Impress Display Problem on SUSE 10.0

I could be barking up the wrong tree, but I need a starting point. HW: Dell Latitude C610 (1.2GHz/256MB) Vid Res: 1024x768 OS: SUSE Linux OSS (10.0-beta 4) OOo: 1.9.125.1 (2.o-pre) I have created a couple of Impress shows, and when I run them on my laptop, the slides run off the right side of the screen. If the text is short enough, it's no problem. But text taking up most of a single line, or spanning multiple lines causes a problem. Things look perfectly normal in the Normal View, where I create the slides. IOW, the text is not running off the right side when I'm in the Normal View. I don't seem to have this problem with KOffice, but prefer to use OOo. I also noticed that the background I used (circles-classic) seemed to change. The size of the circles in the lower right portion of the background - appear much smaller than I think they should be, based on the normal view. Any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks, Don

Hi, Finally got dsl at home so obtained a wlan card to use there. Need cat5 eth0 at work ( NB laptop ). wlan at home running dhcp. Yast seems incapable ot setting the two interfaces up. It either copies static eth0 IPs to the wlan cfg file ( when specifically told not to etc etc ). Tried scpm with boot options but that also seemed unreliable. Have now resorted to editing the settings in /etc/sysconfig/network manually for the two interfaces and will try again this evening. Is there a known problem with yast regarding this? DVD drive not recognised on 64 bit.

Hi all I have just rebuilt my pc with an AMD Athlon 64 bit cpu on an Abit AV8 mb (VIA K8T800 chip). Using ethier the 32 or 64 bit version of 9.3 the and the same DVD drives (DVD on hdc and DVDRW on hdd) as before there is a failure to recognise the first drive once the machine is booted up. If I run system repair on reboot it is fixed but the recognition does not usually survive a reboot. I have checked the caable connections and they are OK. Anybody any ideas as to the cause of the problem please ? Mike

Simple answer: Dump 9.1 and get 9.3 or wait for 10.0. Otherwise you're wasting your time. From all I've read, 9.1 is pathetic at wireless support. Experiences with 10.0 RC1

Hi there! I was having a good time with v 10.0 RC1 this weekend (the installation went flawless) until I started to look for packages I had in 9.3 but could not find in 10.0 RC1, then I ran into issues. I could not find several of the perl-xxx.rpm packages (I don't have the complete list with me but included things like perl-HTML-Mason-xxx.rpm, perl-SQL-xxx.rpm). Then I went to "www.opensuse.org/download" and tried to get the source - I was fine, downloaded the source and installed the binary rpm's from there. I don't know how to do this with yast so I ran rpm commands. I found several packages were missing such as gd-devel-xxx, pwlist-devel-xxx and a postregsql-devel from source. My question: doesn't it make sense to create the binary rpm's once the source is available for the distro? One of the source-rpm forced me to download 10 other packages before it would compile and install the binary rpm's. One of those packages requested gd-devel-xxx.rpm which I could just not find anywhere in either source or binary so I haven't been able to install the binary-rpm. Another question, I use Apache-1.3 and mod_perl 1.2 since apache2 with mod_perl and mason is not really ready for prime time (besides, I tried to make mason play with apache2 and after 12 hours of work gave up). Why is it that there is no RPM version available for SUSE? I have a source-RPM but I got if from RedHat. It might work but I have not tried. I just got one of these boxes as a "barebones" deal and I'm looking to build it out into a PVR, but I have no experience with that sort of thing under Linux. Can anyone recommend some good suse- and/or linux-related info on this topic? I've heard recommendations for ATI's gfx/tuner cards under linux. However, I'm also looking at things like the PNY geforce FX "personal cinema". Does anyone know if there's a chance of getting one of these working on this box under suse 9.3? From what I can tell the gfx part should work well enough for my purposes, but what about the tv/radio tuners? Is there a better option? I'd like to get a combo gfx/tuner card if possible since this box has only 1 PCI slot and one 1.8v AGP slot. Thanks, -John

I am actually using k3b to create a DVD as we speak. What I find curious is that every minute or so, Konqueror opens a new window pointing at file::/media/xxxx. I have been closing the window manually and it is anoying. k3b can't find devices

When I run k3b, he reports no read or write devices found (worked properly in 9.3, have both CD and DVD writers). iPodder rpm install experience

Hi all, Just posted a message on the iPodder forum... But maybe there is also a related thing to the guru sources, especially for the libxml2 package... This was my posting: Hi all, I heard several times something about podcast, but never used it. Heard on internet radio an item about it (radio2 - nl), and was thinking: let's give it a try. The url for the podcast of this radio sender: http://www.avro.nl/podcast with a link to iPodder... Nice also a linux version !!! Ok let's play a starting linux user ... I'm using suse 9.3 / opensuse 10rc1 .. in the download section there is a rpm. Downloaded it, and clicked on it in Konqueror, a nice screen with an explanation and a button 'Install package with Yast'. Unfortunaly: dependency conflicts which couldn't be solved. Because it's very simple to install it from the tar.bz2, it shouldn't be very difficult to create a working package for SUSE ... I'm not blaming anyone, but it should be a different experience :)

xgettext not available?

I am trying to compile libchipcard on Suse Super with kde and added repositories, but it seems to that the installed gettext package does not contain xgettext. Is somewhere a updated package available with xgettext? Without this libchipcard can not be built :-( TIA, rauch

uninstall

Hi! Again i did try to install new ATI driverson 10.0 RC1 without success. I tried to uninstall flgrx rpm with rpm -e and i got a message that file is not install. What is wrong, please? Thanks, Mitja
