cron seems dormant

I've had SuSE 10 installed on my HP box for roughly a week, now, and cron has yet to do the job regarding the daily stuff, at least. I tried the hourly and it, too, seemed not to notice. At least that one appeared in the logs but nothing happened --i.e., #logrotate /etc/logrotate --force-- and it should have happened for the simple reason that issuing that command by hand does rotate the logs. Anyone else having cron problems?? I remember on other time, on either 9.1,.2., or .3 when I had the same problem (but I didn't stay with any of them long enough to figure it out as too much other stuff was busted). openSUSE governance

I would like to raise the subject of openSUSE governance. At the moment openSUSE is governed by the openSUSE core team http://www.opensuse.org/Core_Team I have a few questions. How are decisions made? By some democratic informal voting or agreement? Or is it ruled by Andreas or Adrian? :-) or whoever actually takes on a particular responsibility makes the final decision for that area? The page http://www.opensuse.org/Core_Team_Issues shows that the team is trying to be more transparent. I would like to know what the view of the team is towards the inclusion of one or more Community members (or representatives) on the Core Team. I would see that this would be more symbolic than anything else, but would show the commitment that SUSE has towards the community. I would see the person being involved in discussions, planning, and putting the view of the community across, unhindered by being an employee. Peter 'Pflodo' Flodin.

You might be better off with a backup program that creates CD/Dvd sized images (Kdar and dar) and then you make a shell script to burn the isos. Backup programs usually dont mess with those timestamps you are trying to preserve. I guess I should define playing! I am very happy with Suse, and switched to it from Mandrake (after that whole Linux Format bad cd fiasco). I am wanting to learn more about Linux in general, and get more comfortable with NONRPM based distro's. The reasons for my three choices were Gentoo makes me learn more about Linux's base (how to do things from scratch) and gives me experience with another "package manager" (emerge). Knoppix and Ubuntu teaches me about debian and apt. I am not comfortable enough now to switch from one to another, and would eventually like to be. I can scroll down and cut and paste it, but typing in the orignal message box, comes and goes. These web designers are too Microsoft, active x dependant. Touchpad Problems

I had related some issues about my touchpad before and took care of that. I did the current update and now every time I move my cursor across the open browser window the page will go back 4-5 pages if I move it to the left and if I move it to the right there is no telling where I will end up. any ideas? -- Poneyboy Gregory D. udevinfo syntax help Puhleez!

I have been swimming through the manual(s) and am not able to successfully use 'udevinfo' except for specifying I want all info. The syntax is... #udevinfo -q [path] -n [device_name] ...according to the manual, but always comes back with 'unknown query type' or 'path not specified'. It seems the [path] is somewhat ambiguous, and I could use some guidance with this. (Fact is, on one distro I tested (for a business) the udevinfo was 'so_bad' that the book example which matched the box's devices/architecture came back with the same errors, which makes me wonder if udevinfo is a bit flakey in and of itself.) -- ...Yogich

pwc module on SuSE 10.0

Hi everybody. Is anybody using a Logitech QuickcamPro3000 webcam with SuSE 10.0? In the past (SuSE9.3 and before) I have used Camstream and the pwc module. Under SuSE 10.0, pwc loads and the camera appears in Camstream's "open viewer" menu, but when the window opens - no video. Rebuilding Camstream from newer sources doesn't help. While top posting is naughty, it is mandatory on this interface I am using (webmail system, that doesn't give a choice). As for it starting out that way, I am on the other side of that trend. I have around 13 systems, I used to play. But then I got to the point where I set up a system for a specific function (or have one set aside to do). Several are old donated systems, for those who I have helped (Windows, before starting to learn Linux). Things like: A Window's game machine (game of choice by Microsoft, and I don't think they will release a Linux version anytime soon) Dedicated router appliance Old system to become a VPN firewall for network A dial in server A Samba server Another Samba server with a smaller drive and a burner as a network backup machine My main Suse system A myth box that I plan on making a jukebox for the stereo (and to learn about running x remotely) Another old system to be a vpn, as my brothers service isn't dependable, so I want him to be able to connect to my net connection and save to a Samba share (I learn more and he can download large stuff, that I mail on a cd). Then I have a system to learn about setting up Apache with And my playing system. I have a lot of P1's, 1 PII (I am donating to a school teacher friend), and a few P3's and Athlons. Blocking an email addy

I went to tech school with a very nice girl who is one of those kind of people that must send every thing they find funny to you and everyone in her addy book. well like most people who do this nasty thing she never bcc anything and now all her friends that she sends to got my addy and have added me to their addy book and you would not believe what I am getting, the headers alone fill up two pages of addy's. USB headphone - No sound

NTP set up in YAST is loosing time

Hi, I have used NTP in previous SUSE 9.X, but on 9.3 I used YAST to set up NTP. YASTs dialog says that it will sync to a time server at bootup. In the past I am sure that the local PC was re-sync'd quite often. I rarely ever saw a difference of more than a second between my "Atomic" wall clock or watch. But now I see the PCs time getting more and more 'off' the longer it has been booted. This is irritating and non-intuitive. The systems should stay in sync with the 'official' time servers. One should NOT have to re-boot just to get the clock back in sync. Is the a way to tell the system to regularly 'sync up'? Has anyone out there found a way to keep a 9.3 system time accurate? PeterB

Another reason that closed source products aren't more readily available for Linux. Deals with closed source os companies, who don't want those products competing, with them on stable platforms! Then their is the costs of porting, and keeping development up with Linux's average 6 month cycle. Microsoft may be slow at development, but dependably so. A reson I like open source is, if I like program xyz, I use it. If it becomes abandonware, I have the right to update it myself, and distribute it. (try that with closed source) I also can decide to learn programing and study and play with my programs. If I come up with something doing that, I don't have to worry about being sues by the company that makes the program. That said, there are some closed source programs that I like due to better documentation (how to's), easy to use interface, familarity, and even legality. There is a closed source dvd player, that TurboLinux has licensed, and Suse released it on an HP (laptop I think) a couple of years back. How do I install this mess of interdependent rpm's. Seems no matter which one I pick with kpackage I get failed dependencys related to another of them. I am using Suse 9.2 Pro. Using and having used gkrellm on all my Suse versions I am more than satisfied with the program. The information that I receive back from this program monitor are many and dressed fanciful. Since two months I have ADSL with a maximum usage. In order to keep track of my use the gkrellm chart monitor has a small button with which I am able to see my daily, weekly and monthly usage. I would like to make a hardcopy of the data but run there in difficulties. Somebody knows how to do that? Tried to contact the gkrellm list and the author but they both are not reachable. Got my email's back ;(

I have asked this in the past, and someone else recently asked a similar question. When I press F1 in Mathematica and the HelpBrowser is already opened, the only thing that happens is that the icon in the task bar flashes. I have also noticed that when I open Mozilla from the command line, the profile dialog does not come to the fore. If I open Mozilla in the Alt+F2 launch field, the profile dialog comes to the fore. If I have kdict open, and Alt+F2, it _does_ come to the fore. That is an improvement on the status some months back. This may be a security feature intended to prevent malicious programs from hijacking a password dialog, etc., but I would like to override it in some cases. Is there a way I can get Mathematica's HelpBrowser, and other such apps to do more than flash the icon when the window is selected? Steven

Problem with loading camera on KDE 3.5 RC1

I recently upgraded to KDE 3.5 RC1 and when I plugged in my camera and was asked to open it, I said OK but got the following error: Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'camera'. Does anybody know what I can do? I had no problem before I upgraded to KDE 3.43 but then my upgrade was not smooth. I by mistake used the yast -i *.rpm command, instead of using the YaST GUI to upgrade the KDE packages I had installed, so I went back to YaST GUI and removed the KDE packages which I don't use. Maybe that created some problem? Thanks in advance for any help, Shriramana.

Headless install without VNC and DHCP

One of my monitors just flamed out, right in the middle of booting to do an installation of SuSE 10. It would be very difficult to move another monitor to that system right now, and I would like to do the install using some kind of remote X connection. IOW, stick in the CD (it has no DVD) utter a few magickal incantations, reboot the machine in such a way that I can attache to the install process using X from a running SuSE box, and drive the install from there. I have the media on the network, so once I get control of the system, I can install from the network. At least that would be most convenient. Can this be done? Steven

I am trying to access the following website: www.unitedhealthcareonline.com However, I get the following message: We have detected that you are using a browser that is not supported by our site. Please make sure that you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher or Netscape Communicator 4.x. I normally use Firefox 1.0.7, but I also tried with Konqueror 3.4.0. Same result. I also tried changing the browser identification in Konqueror to say "I.E. (various versions) and Netscape (various versions). But I still get the same message after trying to change the browser identification. Anyone have a suggestion on how I can get into this site using either Firefox or Konqi? Thanks!! :o) Gil

Busybody-Ware Changing SetUID Root Program File Modes

Hi, I have VMware installed, and it makes its user start-up binary, /usr/bin/vmware, setuid root. Something in my system thinks it knows better and keeps taking away public read and execute permission on this file. I'm finding this annoying and tedious to keep resetting. Does anyone know what software might be doing this? I run rkhunter and secchk with their default configuration and on their default cron-driven schedules. Thanks. Randall Schulz

Video Editing Software for SuSE?

Anyone know of a good, user-friendly video-editing app that installs and works well under SuSE 9 or 10 without too much hassle? I've got a set of AVI files from a digital camera that I'd like to make some changes to: rotate frames (the camera was sideways part of the time), blur out certain items, remove or replace the sound track, that sort of thing. I've got *no* background in video, so user-friendliness is important. Free would be nice, of course, but isn't necessary.

Diff between top and ps?

I don't understand a diff I get in outputs from 'top' and ps', can somebody please explain it? If I run 'ps -A -o %cpu,%mem,comm' and grep for 'httpd', I get 0.0% CPU time. Whats in a system name?

Hi, I was wondering what is the proper way to name a suse (linux) machine. In Yast there is DNS and Host Names. There is another option for Host Names. In a machine that is a server for my internet domain name (me.com) should I use that as the Host Name (in DNS and Host Names), or should I name the machine any name, and enter internet domain name in Host Names? I'm not doing any DNS stuff locally, I use my ISP's DNS servers, and have a dynamic IP address from them (with RunDNS running of course). My Suse boxes are not routing at all, I have a little home box router doing that. Hope this dosen't sound like a "Who's on first" excercize. TIA, Jim

Hello from Adam Kb2jpd I have SuSE 10 and want to do an mini-install of SuSE onto a 256M or 512M Compactflash. Anybody knows of a make script or similar using bash where I can autogenerate a basic distro and add and subtract the stuff I want and need? I am looking to do a CarPC install. I am using a VoomPC (www.mini-box.com) and plan to use the platform for various uses including a mobile access point. Thanks in advance. Adam

Timezones seems do not match

Hi everybody, I'm living in Yerevan, Armenia. Our timezone is GMT+4. When I'm setting my hardware clock from YaST to local time it shows the correct time, but when I want to view the time for different timezones(...and choose the city I'm living in)from the clock's settings, it shows time which differs from actual up to 6 hours. It's also not correct for Moscow's time... Is it a bug? Or have I done something wrong?

Set your hardware clock to GMT. That should take care of it.

Hotplugging in SuSE 10.0

Section 32.6.1 of the SuSE 10.0 Reference manual refers to the file, /etc/sysconfig/hotplug . This exists on my computer under SuSE 8.2 and under 9.3 (with enormous differences), but it is missing under 10.0 . Coldplugging consistently works under all of these installations, but hotplugging of my USB card reader only works under 8.2 . Don't I need this /etc/sysconfig/hotplug file? Where did it go? Print Screen Button Issue

Hi you all, I have designed a program based on Python-Gtk and trying to send the application screens by mail (just screens, not the program itself). This by copying the screens with the "Print Screen" button and pasting it into a .odt or .odp file. However everytime i click on the Print Screen button and try "paste" on any .odt or .odp file the system pastes just the following: /home/juanflores/Documents/prototipe/ which is the address where the program is located... Any suggestion?? how can i paste the program screens?? Thanks for your help!! regrds.- Juan
