Website says I must use IE or Netscape communicator -- how to get around this with Konqueror? or Firefox?
Hi, everyone. I am trying to access the following website: www.unitedhealthcareonline.com However, I get the following message: We have detected that you are using a browser that is not supported by our site. Please make sure that you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher or Netscape Communicator 4.x. I normally use Firefox 1.0.7, but I also tried with Konqueror 3.4.0. Same result. I also tried changing the browser identification in Konqueror to say "I.E. (various versions) and Netscape (various versions). But I still get the same message after trying to change the browser identification. Anyone have a suggestion on how I can get into this site using either Firefox or Konqi? Thanks!! :o) Gil

You may find success with the User Agent Switcher plugin for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=59

SUSE 9.3, KDE/Konqueror 3.4.3 level b and got same error as you. Switched Konq's ID to "IE version 6.0 on XP" and it didn't work so I quit Konq and restarted it and had access to the site. With Konq and website ID changes you sometimes just have to restart Konq to get it to work. Stan

Stan, very interesting. I had tried exactly as you recommended but without success. Tried it 4 times and could not figure out why I was not getting the same results you were. Then I figured it out what was different. After making the change you suggested and restarting Konqi, I was calling up the URL by using the drop-down list at the top of Konqi. But that would bring up the same "can't access" webpage. Then I tried retyping the URL into Konqi and this time it found the right page. I then noticed that the "old" (cached?) URL in the drop-down list had a Konqi globe symbol (icon) next to it (on the far left) while the "new" URL I had just typed had a "Netscape" icon. So once I changed the browser identification AND manually retyped the URL, then it worked. Thanks for forcing me to persist until I found the solution! :o) Gil

Ken, sorry I don't understand. How do you change the browser type in Firefox? I don't see any screens for making this change. Simply deleting the "unsupported" part at the end of the URL and reloading doesn't change anything -- at least not on my box. Thanks for clarification. Gil

I just dug through the preferences for both. FF has no preferences to adjust and Konqi when set to not send the browser info still gets the unsupported page. Opera gets the right screen right off the bat though. :)

Write to the webmaster and tell them to buck their ideas up. That's a disgrace. It's up to them to offer a standards compliant site, not up to the user to take orders about what browser to use. Don't let them get away with it. They're also living in the dark ages with: "Please note that although we do not support the latest browser release by Netscape (version 6.x), we intend to support it in the near future." Oh, great, why not move up to the browser of a few years back? Don't give 'em your business and let them know why. Their site isn't valid html either: here's just the very beginning of what the WWW Consortium validator (http://validator.w3.org/) thinks of it: Result: Failed validation, 3 errors Address: Encoding: utf-8 Doctype: (no Doctype found) Revalidate With Options : Show Source Show Outline Show Parse Tree ...no attributes Validate error pages Verbose Output Help on the options is available. No Character Encoding Found! Falling back to UTF-8. I was not able to extract a character encoding labeling from any of the valid sources for such information. Without encoding information it is impossible to reliably validate the document. I'm falling back to the "UTF-8" encoding and will attempt to perform the validation, but this is likely to fail for all non-trivial documents. Read the FAQ entry on character encoding for more details and pointers on how to fix this problem with your document. No DOCTYPE found! Attempting validation with HTML 4.01 Transitional. The DOCTYPE Declaration was not recognized or is missing. This probably means that the Formal Public Identifier contains a spelling error, or that the Declaration is not using correct syntax. Validation has been performed using a default "fallback" Document Type Definition that closely resembles "HTML 4.01 Transitional", but the document will not be Valid until you have corrected this problem with the DOCTYPE Declaration. Learn how to add a doctype to your document from our FAQ. This page is not Valid (no Doctype found)! Below are the results of attempting to parse this document with an SGML parser. 1. Error Line 1 column 0: no document type declaration; implying "<!DOCTYPE HTML SYSTEM>". <HTML> The checked page did not contain a document type ("DOCTYPE") declaration. The Validator has tried to validate with a fallback DTD, but this is quite likely to be incorrect and will generate a large number of incorrect error messages. It is highly recommended that you insert the proper DOCTYPE declaration in your document -- instructions for doing this are given above -- and it is necessary to have this declaration before the page can be declared to be valid. ✉ 2. Error Line 4 column 29: required attribute "TYPE" not specified. <Script language="Javascript"> The attribute given above is required for an element that you've used, but you have omitted it. For instance, in most HTML and XHTML document types the "type" attribute is required on the "script" element and the "alt" attribute is required for the "img" element. Typical values for type are type="text/css" for <style> and type="text/javascript" for <script>. etc etc etc ...

It's 'probably' down to sloppy, lazy coding by the website creators. If the html or whatever is used for the site it should be to W3 standard. When it's not it causes problems. I always let the website owners know this and request that they make sure it is standard compliant in future. Don't have a rant at them as they probably do not even realise themselves what is wrong. Gentle persuasion works best.....usually :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care.
