KDE 3.5 artsd crash

amsn_cvs RPM

Hello, I've build new RPM packages for amsn, cvs version. They are called 'amsn_cvs' and have some nice and new features with respect the relased 'amsn 0.94'. Note that it is a development version. To install 'amsn_cvs' RPMs you need uninstall 'amsn' because of some conflicts. qc-usb and Logitech Quickcam Express

I know it's an old camera and that the image is not that great. The problem is that it used to work up to SuSE 9.0. From 9.1 onward I could never get the camera to work again. The driver wishlist at opensuse.org mentions that a minor code change is needed to make the qc-usb driver work but I couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone here know about what changes are needed to get qc-usb working with this camera on SUSE 10.0? Regards, Salomon

Running essential windows apps with Suse10

Hi Folks, Running an up-to-date DVD version of Suse10.0 here. I finally get my life free of MS Windows and up pops a little problem that can only be solved with Windows software. I have a Topfield PVR (Personal Video Recorder) in my lounge room that is some distance from my computer room. It has an RS232 port and a USB 2.0 port to talk to computers with. In order to update firmware, load little Topfield applications (Taps), and transfer recorded shows for DVD archive using the pc's burner I have to run Windows only software to 'talk' to the Topfield. I worked out a solution to connect the two would be to run USB extenders with a length of cat5 cable between the ends (should be less than 40 feet). Not cheap but cheaper than setting up and learning all about secure wireless networking for this?! ( I have VERY limited income). My real problem then becomes "How do I run the Windows software on my Suse10.0 box?" I immediately thought 'wine' would be too lightweight for this - not sure why, so I had a look at a web site for Win4Lin. It was looking real good until I read in the small print something about support for USB 2.0 isn't there yet. Apparently emulators biggest problem is emulating Windows direct use of hardware. VMWare is the only other one I know of and that is getting to be a real expensive solution (if it works). I have heard of Cedega, but that is used for games isn't it? So, if anyone has any ideas on how to transfer files using a USB 2.0 interface over 40 ft or so utilizing Windows software on a Suse10.0 box; I would be most grateful to hear your solutions?? Paul.

Hi, I have a dual Opteron File server with 4GB ram, and just "upgraded" to SLES9 x86-64 (was previously running SUSE 9.3 x86-64 without problem). The system keeps crashing, and I am starting to suspect mtrr. Some other posts on the subject indicate that mtrr is used to remap the memory that is hidden by the PCI bus to a region above the existing physical memory, so it can be accessible. The system on boot always reports something like this: mtrr: 0xfd000000,0x800000 overlaps existing 0xfd000000,0x400000 mtrr: 0xfd000000,0x800000 overlaps existing 0xfd000000,0x400000 And after running a while it suddently locks up, requiring a cold start. Something else that I thought funny is that there are 2 PCI -X cards in it that work fine but attempting to put in another (an Intel dual GigE card) prevents the system from booting or even passing POST (even with the other cards removed). The same card works in another dual Opteron machine (different mother board) running SLES9 without problem. So, if erroneous memory mapping by mtrr is causing the lockups, how can I remap or disable memory mapping? Thanks for any clues John Craig

Printer Problems

Having an issue on my Mom's system. She runs SuSE (short u) 9.2 on a Monarch Systems AMD Sempron 3000 with 1GB RAM. She has an Epson Stylus Photo 300r USB printer. Everything's been plugging along just fine since March when I upgraded her from Windows. She's even gotten used to YOU updates and having to reboot once every few weeks. (Okay, well, she used to reboot every day, but realized you don't have to under Linux.) Last week, however, her printer stopped. I can't figure out what's going on. CUPS says the printer is alive and well. Printing a test page from the printer console works fine. However, there is never any output from printing in KDE or using the lpr command. The print jobs simply queue up and stall. I've reinstalled the printer and no luck. Ideas? Where should I look? I know I need to get her upgraded to 10 pretty soon (along with OOo 2.0) but want to get this resolved first. -- kai www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

Home-network with suse V 9.3

Hi Iam Struggling with " Network and SuSE Linux I386 9.3 Professional" I am using a new V9.3 package. I have made no changes in SAMBA file or SAMBA Clients. I have a Home network with both a WIN2000 and WIN XP/home and WIN98SE and a WIN XP/proff. node. I found I could browse around drives and files (using SMB shares from the Suse node) only on the WIN2000 and XP nodes. I can find and see the symbols for the WIN98 nodes and its drives but when choosing the item ,the system cant find them.(and neither asks for any password or authorization) I have tried to change in the register to encrypted passwords on the win98SE nodes but no sucsess. Remark: When I brows WIN2000 for first time during a sesson I have to log in with its password, with XPnode however, I goes in direct. Another funny thing: I have probably something unnormal in the WIN 2000 node as I kan see and browse both drive C and a "mirror" "C$" with the same good result? Thank you for all hints!! MP3 problems

After upgrading my SuSE 10 laptop to the latest KDE via apt, KDE no longer plays MP3 files. I can play them under GNOME or in KDE using bmpx, but Juk and amaroK (my preferred players) will not play them. I had this problem earlier after a KDE update (3.4), which was solved by installing kdemultimedia3-mad and kdemultimedia3-arts-mad. There are no 3.5 versions of these packages (as of 5 minutes ago). Has anyone else run into this? If so, were you able to resolve it, and how did you fix it? Thanks in advance.

evolution vfolders

I like to keep a special note of some email messages that I think may be useful in the future. Previously, I just copied them to another folder. I thought I'd try to use Evolution's vfolders, so I made a vfolder that selects for 'important' messages. But when I mark messages as important, they don't show up in the vfolder. Does that get to be a pain? > Jim > Hi Jim, It's not really that bad. The installer is a script that compiles the driver using your kernel headers. If you upgrade your kernel, you just have to run the installer again. I suppose if you upgrade you kernel quite frequently, the extra step would become annoying, but still it's only an extra five minutes or so. Just keep the Nvidia installer handy and run it each time you upgrade, and make sure you get the kernel headers for the new kernel each time, too. - Dave

Hi, Packages announced as much as a full day ago on the Guru's RPM RSS feed have yet to show up in its YaST repository (<http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.0> -- and yes, I do have update checking enabled in the Installation Sources configuration; I also did a manual refresh). Hey list!!!, look at this firefox's fork: http://www.flock.com For now It's beta, but looks promissing regarding web 2.0 features. It really has cool new stuff in it. I am "flocking" the web and editting my blog right now with it. It has a built in blog edittor, as well as an RSS reader, really cool. Problems installing (keyboard does not respond)

Hi, I'm having trouble installing SuSE 10 on my new computer. It's a AMD64 3200+ with an ASRock 939dual motherboard. The iso boots up fine but i don't have the ability to use the keyboard. I tried both a PS/2 and an USB keyboard and both don't work. I tried searching the list but can't seem to find a similiar case. I also tried Fedora Core, and this does not have this problem. I prefer SuSE though, so i hope this can be solved ;) Any hints? -- Jeroen

Developing a Real Time Data System

Hi you all, I am trying to develop a real time data system based on a National Instruments Data Acquisition Card, there are several options to connect to my computer by using different cards: - USB 2.0 full speed bus interface - PCMCIA - PCI All of these are linux Operating System compatible, and according to National Instruments recommendations the following are the compatible softwares to develop any application: C , C++, C# and Visual basic I am really interested on developing an application which allows me to create a real time graphic interface to monitor data vs time and save such data on a postgre or mysql database on real time as well. Thinking of developing on mono but it seems mono capabilities does not allow to get data from any of the mentioned ports. Any suggestion??? What software should I use to get my system working?? Linux Tools for Image Enhancement

Hello all! Though not related specifically to SUSE... Can anyone offer any ideas for image enhancement tools? Something more robust than Gimp? I have an image (a digital photograph) I need to enlarge and enhance -- an image that appears to be some sort of logo or TM design. Ideas? As always, TIA for any hints/ideas. -- Christopher Shanahan

Closed Source on Linux?

I have a license for a very expensive program which I have been updating for over ten years. That program is Mathematica. As soon as I discovered that it was available for Linux, I switched my license from Windows to Linux. Companies such as Adobe have toyed with the idea of providing their products for Linux, but backed off. Part of the reason vendors shy away from supporting Linux versions of they products seems to be a hostility on the part of the FOSS community toward closed source products. Personally, I don't mind paying Wolfram Research to produce a powerful product, and feed a handful of talented Mathematicians. The value WRI returns to the world is far in excess of the money paid for their products. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ http://functions.wolfram.com/ http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/ http://www.mathmlcentral.com/ And this site was maintained for years by the person who manages/moderates the Mathematica mailinglist and newsgroup. http://sunfreeware.com/ To this day, I still go to http://smc.vnet.net to find the address. hy, i have a really lame question coming up here, but anyway its driying my small brain out so here it goes: i have a script where you pass paramaters to it sor of #./script fred mike peter sony inside the script i have a load of tests but what i need is that the tests are run on all the paramaters that are passed at command line, so what im looking for is something like: for EACH PARAMETER do test test test test done but i cant figure out how can i pass the paramaters one by one to the test fields. Thnx for your help!.

I am running SUSE 9.3 to create a forensics Workstation. I have a device that will host any IDE drive and allow it to be presented as a USB drive. As for Webmail clients, I don't know of any that allows you to adapt comcasts settings (as they eliminated some about two "upgrades" ago). modem not resonding

Hello, I am using Suse 9.0, and Kinternet. Attaching to the internet has recently failed for me. It used to work until recently, and it continues to work under Win2000 (I have dual boot). I have not changed any settings. I have a 3COM , US Robotics 56K Fax Modem (external). The settings are Device file:/dev/ttyS0 baud rate 115200 Init 1: ATZ Init 2: AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 Tone Dialing is set. The log details are: SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.06 on mc-253. I'm running SuSE 10 (DVD). I have Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 installed and the plugin is set up in /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins/ nppdf.so -> /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat7/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so I have verified that the plugin is active with about:plugins When loading, all Firefox displays is a gray screen, it does not load acroread. However, I can save the page, and read it with Acroread. I've updated my KDE and GNOME to the latest bleeding edge bits. (Yes, I had to ignore several dependency failures.) I have the sense that many of the programs run significantly faster. Has anybody else noticed a difference? Steven

How to block Win-hosted spamming worms with SuSEfirewall2

Hi, Time to time Windows PCs on our network get infected with spamming worms and Antivirus is not always effective. I think it is simply possible to block those worms with SuSEfirewall2. Here is my idea. All e-mail clients sending e-mails via Linux server which acts as firewall, router, mail and web server. I do not think worms are contacting local smtp server, instead, they use direct smtp connection to distribute junk. If it would be possible to allow internal (client) -> internal (our server) smtp connection while disable internal (client) -> external smtp, worms will be simply blocked. Anyone have an idea if this will work, and how to do it in SuSEfirewall2? Thanks in advance for any suggestion(s). Andrei Verovski

Suspend-2-Disk --Need advice!

Seems the suspend-2-disk works ...almost. It locks up after vt7 comes back and KDE looks a mess. I have a shot of it if anyone needs to see it. Hello, Impossible is not French, so after a few days of trials, I succeeded in installing SuSE 9.3 Professional. My config : Asus P5WD2 premium with : - Intel pentium extreme edition - IDE DVD-Rom as master - IDE DVD RW as slave - T7k250 Sata disk - 7k500 Sata disk My BIOS configuration : - IDE standard, enhanced mode, SATA - USB disabled ( during Linux install only since install freezes with USB enabled ) How to install (with the DVD) : - at boot choose your language with F4 and your 32bit or 64bit with F6 (I didn't yet try 64bit) - type : manual=1 as boot parameter - then go ... During manual installation : - install kernel modules -> SCSI/Raid/IDE modules -> piix - install kernel modules -> SCSI/Raid/IDE modules -> ata_piix Then choose : start installation. Et voilà .... OK you guys have been great in helping me get this OS under control. I had several issues that I had asked help on I will list them and tell you where I am 1) Dell 1350 WLAN NIC. I downloaded a commercial driver and it works great now. 2) Using terminal window, commends ect, learned and done. 3) Setting up SUSE to see XP and visa versa. Here is where I stand I can see SUSE from XP and access all the files, I can see XP (In this case Poneyboy) from SUSE but I can't access it. In network drive Is says Windows, I open it and I have two options Poneyboy (which is the name of the desktop) and MSHOME (which is the name of the XP Network) when I click on MSHOME it opens up a Drive Poneyboy when I open it I get MSHOME and over and over and over on both networks. I never get to the folders on the Desktop. it is a never ending opening cycle. Apps on SUSE are driving me nuts. In GNOME almost everything opens, however their are a handful of Apps that refuse to launch, EX Desktop Photo refuses to launch. In KDE hardly anything launches. I did check the current bug list and this has been posted so I do not think there is anything that can be done at current I expect Novell to send a patch for this soon. qc-usb and Logitech Quickcam Express

I know it's an old camera and that the image is not that great. The problem is that it used to work up to SuSE 9.0. From 9.1 onward I could never get the camera to work again. The driver wishlist at opensuse.org mentions that a minor code change is needed to make the qc-usb driver work but I couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone here know about what changes are needed to get qc-usb working with this camera on SUSE 10.0? Regards, Salomon
