Hello all! Though not related specifically to SUSE... Can anyone offer any ideas for image enhancement tools? Something more robust than Gimp? I have an image (a digital photograph) I need to enlarge and enhance -- an image that appears to be some sort of logo or TM design. Ideas? As always, TIA for any hints/ideas. -- Christopher Shanahan

As far as TMs and logos usualy are stored in vector graphic format, maybe you should look at OpenOffice Draw or Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org). Even if the original is in bitmap format, I always redraw/convert it in vector for future use. Upscaling of a raster image is not a pleasant job, and it aways looks bad. Thanks, but it's a digital picture of -- what appears to be -- a logo or TM design. I'm not sure what the image is, hence the need for enhancement. Thanks though. -- Christopher Shanahan

Uhhh Exactly what is wrong with Gimp?? I don't think you are going to find anything else even close to Gimp.

I don't recall saying that anything was _wrong_ with Gimp. On the contrary, I use it quite frequently. Don't make my original post/question out to be something it is not. Please. -- Christopher Shanahan

Touchy touchy..... But you were implying/saying that gimp would do what you wanted (whetever that is) and that you wanted something more 'robust'. This implies you want something better than gimp. So, to rephrase, just what won't gimp do that you want to do????

I wasn't trying to _imply_ anything. I'll try to choose my words better next time. Okay?

Well, as I said, I need to enlarge a digital image all the while decreasing the blur (noise) as much as possible, so I can see the logo in the digital picture. I'm going through the info related to ImageMagick's many tools as I type this. I'm getting better results with ImageMagick's tools then I was getting with Gimp. Now, that's not to say that Gimp can't do what I want. I did the best I could with Gimp but I still couldn't discern the logo. I was looking for something more specific to my needs (i.e. -convert). -- Christopher Shanahan

It is really a wonderful program. The other day I had to scan an A3 page, and my scanner can only do A4: ie, the page was double the scanner size. I scanned it in two halves and then joined then in a single image, aligning (displacing and slightly rotating) till they adjusted exactly. But I wondered if there is something to automatically do that... - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDg7ANtTMYHG2NR9URAlljAJ47/lPvZMCiXLqkRlRXImULyA6pMQCfXwh7 QD8r9yXWEZQhzgaCujCP63E= =pUJE -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

As a first step, have a lool at autotrace:
http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/
which is a porgram to convert various bitmap formats:
"BMP, TGA, PNM, PPM, PGM, PBM and those supported by ImageMagick"
into various vector formats:
"Postscript, svg, xfig, swf, pstoedit, emf, dxf, cgm, mif, p2e
and sk".
Once you have a suitable vector format (especially xfig) you can
then manipulate it (PostScript can theoretically be manipulated,
though in practice this can be very difficult), and it will stand
being rescaled without loss of quality (relative to the resolution
of the display/print device).
Good luck!
Ted.
