What kind of service provider? DSL? Just thinking maybe MTU might be related.... undo kernel update?

I'm having ups and downs today. Now I'm back at another down ... I completed my upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1. It ran OK. Before reconfiguring my disks (which was the point of the upgrade) I thought to make sure everything was up-to-date. So I ran YOU. Everything seemed OK but one of the updates was from kernel 2.6.4-52 to 2.6.5-7.108 and now it won't boot! It starts to boot, getting as far as saying it is checking but then apparently just hangs/loops. The disk light is on and I let it sit for about 20 mins. I brought up a rescue system using my original update boot CD and can see the /boot directory contains the 2.6.5 kernel but I don't see the old one. Does YOU not keep the previous version? How can I back out the update? Or can I just reinstall the kernel alone from the boot CD? Thanks, Dave

new apt component suser-guru

As the subject already states a new component has been added to the apt repository. The component suser-guru is available for suse-8.2, suse-9.0 and suse-9.1 and it provides the packages that used to be available via http://guru.unixtech.be You may have already noted that the site http://guru.unixtech.be is not available at the moment. I just replaced the P3 Celeron motherboard with an Athlon 64 motherboard. I had also hoped that I could just remove the old sound and video configs and add the new ones and get up and running quickly. After I swapped the motherboard, SuSE wouldn't boot anymore. I reinstalled it, going with x86_64 instead if i386. In retrospect, it looks like it wouldn't boot with the new motherboard because my hard drive changed from hda to hde because of the integrated SATA controller on the new motherboard. I probably could have gotten it to boot if I had started a rescue system and edited the fstab, but I didn't realize that I needed to change to hde. IMO, as long as you have a backup of all your data files you might as well try installing the hard drives in the new box to see if it works. Samba, Swat, and xinetd

When I attempt to start up Swat, the Samba configuration program, I get the message: Could not connect to host localhost (port 901) I've followed the instructions about configuring /etc/xinetd.d/swat and /etc/services. And indeed, if I run /etc/inetd.d/xinetd restart after booting up, Swat becomes available as it should. But the question is this: Is there some way to set the configuration so that Swat will run the first time I call it, without my having to go through the "xinetd restart" pirouette? Paul Abrahams

Resizing without reinstall?

I want to move space from my /home and add it to /. It seems this proceedure does not work in Suse 9.1. The resulting files are too large for a cdrom so I must mount the target drive on another system and as root mounting ONLY those partitions I need to restore, I begin the restore. No error messages but when I shutdown and remove that drive and put it in the other system and attempt to boot, the extended partition is dammaged so that the legacy system can not see its other partitions. In the third attempt I could not even boot the harddrive without fdisk/fbr and restoring the system with sys. I also lost the setting of the active partition which was hda Even going to the extreme of having these two partitions made primarys to prevent contact with the extended partition failed to protect the system from failure. The other OS on this system is legacy windows. I need it for programs not existing in winblows or *nix. It appears that there is a point of no return for Suse which now requires its own HD even though I had it working before but only with a 96% full small / of just over 4.5gig. What program can I buy, steal or download which will do what Suse can not without dammage to my system. I can reinstall 9.1 on my system but the restore destroys access. Move to another hardware platform.

What's the easiest way to move a system from one hardware platform to another? I have a fully functional system that runs on a motherboard with Intel P4 CPU, and I want to move it to a motherboard with a AMD Athlon CPU.. Peripherals like network adapter and graphics adapter is identical. I guess that I can't just lift out the hard drives and move them over and then expect the system to work? Anders Norrbring
