Move to another hardware platform.
What's the easiest way to move a system from one hardware platform to another? I have a fully functional system that runs on a motherboard with Intel P4 CPU, and I want to move it to a motherboard with a AMD Athlon CPU.. Peripherals like network adapter and graphics adapter is identical. I guess that I can't just lift out the hard drives and move them over and then expect the system to work? Anders Norrbring

Why not? As long as you don't have a custom compiled kernel, and as long as you place the hard drives at the same place in the new system as it was in the old, there should be no change needed.

I guess I'm now prepared to give it a try... Thank you all! Anders.

Why not? The only limitation would be the kernel if it was custom complied for a specific cpu.

Not to try to hijack this thread, but what would happen if the drives ended up changing? Would that just be a matter of fixing the mountpoints in fstab and the grub/lilo configs? Or, is there more?

Not much more.. Maybe a few .conf files if they point by partitions rather than path.. I have done a few "transfers" but not too much problems have reared.. Might take a few fiddles to get all down pat, but not too much... Fastest and easiest is of course to get the disk back as the same unit it was. That way you don't have to change anything. -- /Rikard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rikjoh@norweb.se Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 735 05 51 01 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

I guess that I can't just lift out the hard drives and move them over and then expect the system to work? I have done just that in the past several times with no problems. You might have to reconfigure the video card for xwindows to work if its a different video card in the new machine. It should detech the new hardware an be ok for you.
make a tgood backup of your system then go for it. jack
