Looking for new linux/windows desktop computer

Dear All, I have been assigned the job to look for and purchase a new desktop for my stepson. He likes my Suse 8.2 pro dual boot with windows. He wants something similar to my setup. I have an athlon 1600+ xp with 60 gig harddrive(soon to increase to 200 GB) 512 megs memory, etc. He is not a do it yourselfer(yet) for working on computer problems really so I looked at Dell first. Dell has a special for $499. In reality to get it to be an acceptable deal it comes closer to $750. He wants a printer and scanner as well and I wondered if the all in one Dell model will work with Linux. This is the advertised TV special that has been on lately. His father(my husband) wants to purchase this soon but does not want to go over the $700 range. It is a challenge so far to get everything right so that it is a good computer for his son's needs at that price. Any suggestions? My stepson is open to athlon or pentiums and probably needs some kind of support that is decent as well as good warranties all in the $700 range . It would be better if Linux is already installed with the windows since he has never done that sort of thing and I live many miles away from him. I would otherwise install linux for him. Any suggestions and ideas will be gratefully received. Thanks very much. Marcia

apt-get deleted a bunch of files

I did an apt-get -f install. It had found and extra libexim, which I had installed for gimp2. It deleted a bunch of gnome and kde stuff. I did say "yes", but figured it would replace things. It didn't. I used YaST and got a lot of stuff back, but have no menus in KDE. Cam I restore this stuff? Hello, I have the problem described in the SuSE knowledge base here: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/fhassel_windows_not_booting91.html That is, with Windows XP installed, I did an ftp install on another partition of SuSE 9.1, and used parted to make changes to the partition table, and now GRUB does not even list Windows XP on boot, so that I can only boot into SuSE. I am following the instructions linked above and have encountered a problem. Near the end of the CD-Rom driver-update process the knowledge base says: "After completing the driver update, click "Back"." When I do this it asks for CD 1 of the SuSE installation discs, and so I put in my FTP Install CD-Rom. This does'nt work and SuSE insists that I have not really inserted CD 1 of the install discs. Consequently, I never get to view the broken partition table to try to repair it. Will the FTP disc not work for this driver update process? If I download and burn the SuSE-personal-9.1 iso would that work? Thanks for any tips. Brian

what is the difference between the codeweaver program and wine. I understand that code weaver uses wine, so is the difference: a) 39.95 b) 3 months of install only support ? Secondly, they seem to be very vague regarding which windows programs run under they product. There ad chart says that their 'supported programs' run under their product. When you go to the 'brose the list of supported programs, their is a field in the chart labeled 'medal'. Is this another bill gates word invention? Under 'medal' most of the entries are "untested". This is a commercial product? or, is 'untested' a caveat saying that they don't know if if works (like the tobacco executives who are excused from the room when the discussion turns to cancer, etc., for deniability). SuSE 8.1 Install hangs during package installation

Greetings SuSErs, After scouring the archives of several lists and coming up with nothing, I am looking for some help. I have problems installing SuSE 8.1 on an older PC I want to set up as a home file server. The hard drive is a brand new Seagate 120GB IDE connected to a HighPoint Rocket100 IDE card. It has Win98 installed and running properly on the first primary partition (other h/w details below). After starting YaST, I insert the IDE controller card driver into the kernel from a floppy before selecting the setup options (partitioning, software, boot, ...). No problems getting YaST to run in text or 640x480 mode. Once I have the setup configured as detailed below, I accept the install warning message and start installing. The system moves along, installing the packages and reporting progress for a random amount of time and then hangs (I made several attempts and it is a different package each time). The keyboard and mouse are locked up, so I cannot change to a different terminal window to check for possible error messages. I tried 8.2 previously and became fed up with the continuous stream of file dependency warnings and failed RPM installs (with little to know detail in the error messages). I am using 8.1 as a fallback with the intention of attempting an upgrade to 8.2 once the system is up and running. I used the same 8.1 media on a brand new machine with no problems whatsoever. 9.X is out of the question as HighPoint does not support the 2.6 kernel on the Rocket100. Any help is greatly appreciated. Local Network Icon Missing

Hi, I recently did a clean install of 9.1 and notice that the Local Network icon is missing from my desktop. I've looked and looked but can't find how to put one there. Any ideas welcome. Jim Flanagan

KDE locking the whole box on SuSE 9.1

Hi all! Tried a fresh install of 9.1 today (for the third time) No frills, just a clean from scratch install of the standard system. And i've gotten the same problem EVERYTIME! KDE locks up randomly after a few minutes. No keyboard, no network no nothing but the button-on-the-front can unluck it. I cant seem to find the answer to why or what causes the lockup. Thought it to be YAS, but even if i dont run it it locks. Thought it was a number of other things, none applied. It just wont run. It looses keyboard, CAPS and NUM toggles, but you cant shift to another terminal to kill X, and you cant even bail out with ctrl-alt-backspace. YOu cant access the box via keyboard at all. It also kills network connections, i cant ping let alone ssh to the box as it hangs. Homebrew NAS device

Question: If I were to build a NAS box using Linux, what would be the prefered protocol for file transfer? Would rsync be fast enough? Or should I consider scripting ftp or something else? I know smb is too slow for large amounts of data. I'm wanting to do disk-to-disk backups for about 300GB. Thoughts? <<JAV>>

BASH History

Hi, The BASH history question reminded of a small problem I have with this function that perhaps someone can help me with. I always keep a Konsole window open in which I have four regular interactive BASH shells and one root shell running. When I log out or shut down, it seems that the four shells running under my user ID clash somehow or fail to coordinate in the way they write the history file, and I end up with only one of those shells' history. Does anyone know of a way to get all four shells' worth of history saved? Randall Schulz
