2.6 vs 2.4 kernals

Greetings, I wonder if we could ask one of the guru's to list the processes and differences in creating kernals etc. across 2.4 and earlier and 2.6 (and hopefully later). such as "make prepare" instead of "make dep" or is there a mini-how-to somewhere? as one who rarely has to, but does work on various systems with different kernals I would like to have a "cheat-sheet" but don't believe i'm proficent enough to create it myself. with many thanks scsijon australia

Microphone input problem, and setting capture???

Hi. I can't get my microphone working...... With Suse 9.1 on a pentium 4 pc and kernel 2.6.5-7.108-default, I am having trouble getting my microphone to work (krecorder, skype). I am using SB Audigy 2 (configured in yast2), and it works well under Win XP on the same pc. The speakers work fine in Linux too. I turned up the mike volume in kmix 2.0.1. However, there is a blank screen under kmix input, and the capture tab in Kamix 0.0.7 is also blank except for a mic boost +20db check box. When I start Kamix I get the warning that no sound card has been configured yet, although it has and yast2 agrees with that. Any suggestions? Sune -- Sune Nørhøj Jespersen

Jerry, finally the error message disappeared after I tried many things but the most important one was probably commenting out the ipv6 statement in /etc/named.conf. There must be some sort of script that runs either during or post-install. I noticed this as well and found that it does _not_ get created if other machines are not detected on your network (i.e. your not online or on a network during installation). Not sure if it does a broadcast or what to determine this. linux utility to fix partition table

Hi, While rsyncing data to my second drive for backup it went into "forever" . the disk light stayed on and the box "hanged". The only recourse was to press the reset switch. So to be on the safe side I booted with the cdrom rescue system. Fdsik -l . told me that disk hdg1 , hdg2, hdg3, hdg4 the extended partition did not end on a cylinder. The rest from hdg5 up to hdg11 were OK. Checking with partition magic 8. I was told there is errors and want to fix it. I read sometime ago on one of the many lists I belong to not to fix this with PM. There is a linux utility that can fix linux partitions. This drive was partitioned with qtparted. There was also mention that linux utilities exist to reset the mbr and other disk repair operatins. Kindly please may I have the names of these utilities. Partitions could not be mounted when upgrading 9.0 to 9.1

I'm trying to upgrade a 9.0 system to 9.1 over the network. I've made a boot.iso disk, booted and appear to have connected OK to the server. Yast has detected the exeisting system and I've asked it to update /dev/hda1 (which it says is 'SuSe Linux 9.0'). But then I get an error dialog: Partitions could not be mounted. Check /var/log/Yast2/y2log I used ctrl-alt-f2 to get a root console and at the end of y2log I see: ... Calling YaST client rootpart_proposal ... clients/inst_proposal.ycp:125 Called YaST client returned: $["raw proposal":["SuSE Linux 9.0"], "warning":"Failed to mount target system", "warning level":`fatal] Earlier in the log there are the results of debugreiserfs which seem to indicate that it successfully detected a valid filesystem on that partition and others. (The 9.0 system does work! [most of the time]) Can anybody suggest what the problem is and how to get around it? I'm doing the upgrade because the system has some SATA disks (hda is a PATA disk). The system is running OK in ICH5/BIOS 'legacy mode' but occasionally hangs under heavy disk load. I'm hoping the 2.6 kernel will enable me to run the SATA disks in native mode, reliably. Problem with FireFox with updated kernal of SuSE 9.0

My SuSE 9.0 has the updated kenel from YOU Release 2.4.21-243 The Mozilla Firefox will run for awhile then just disappear. I searched for messages in the logs but found nothing. The different version I have tried are 0.9.3 tarball 0.9.2 tarball 0.9.1 tarball 0.9.0 tarball rpm version 0.8.0-33 version 0.8.0-44 version 0.9.3 version 0.9.2 I have gone back to using mozilla 1.7.2 and opera 7.54 My other machines with SuSE 9.1 with kernel 2.6 and SuSE 9.0 kernel 2.4.21-231-default are running Firefox fine. If you might have an idea or check that I might try, instead of reinstalling SuSE 9.0 on this machine. Skip
