Samba, Swat, and xinetd
When I attempt to start up Swat, the Samba configuration program, I get the message: Could not connect to host localhost (port 901) I've followed the instructions about configuring /etc/xinetd.d/swat and /etc/services. And indeed, if I run /etc/inetd.d/xinetd restart after booting up, Swat becomes available as it should. But the question is this: Is there some way to set the configuration so that Swat will run the first time I call it, without my having to go through the "xinetd restart" pirouette? Paul Abrahams

and /etc/services. And indeed, if I run /etc/inetd.d/xinetd restart after I don't remember having to tamper with any of those. All I had to do was use YaST to enable swat in xinetd. Are you running the firewall? That bit me because I forgot to allow port 901.

The instructions in the man page for swat.

Thanks for the hint. Going through Yast seems to have solved the problem, even though it appeared on the inetd page of Yast that swat had already been turned on. Reenabling it, even though Yast already indicated it was on, did the trick. Paul Abrahams

Reenabling it, even though Yast already indicated it was on, did the trick. I suspect that SuSE has their own way of doing it so the man page instructions stepped on something needed by the SuSE way. Perhaps re-enabling forced an update of the SuSE setup for swat?
