Linux-Friendly Hardware for Building New Computer

Hello, SuSE-e List Members - After 7 years on the old PII-450, it's time to upgrade. I've been learning what I can about a *lot* of new hardware: DDR/DDR2 RAM, SATA HDDs, HyperThreading, etc. Too much to know, and not enough time to learn it. :-) I'm also moving to as much Linux in the house as possible and practical ... ~33% and rising! Background: I run three mixed-OS desktops that are geared toward graphics and soon toward video building/production, as well as the basic office and Internet applications. Current and future OS'es are Windows 2000 on two machines (my wife's) and SuSE Linux 9.0 on the third (mine). The current PII-450 Linux box has two installs, one with CX Office and one with Win4Lin. Each install has its own primary partition for some Windows programs that still have no acceptable (to me) Linux analogs, such as CorelDRAW, Poser, and Bryce. The /home partition lives on a second hard drive. The new Linux box will also have the same config. I plan to build these systems around the Intel 3.2Gb chip and mainboards that support DDR2 RAM (2Gb initially). Drives will be a mix of IDE and SATA, as I have a number of 120Gb+ IDE drives that I purchased over the last year. Question: I've heard there are problems on the support side for some new ASUS motherboards, so I am probably breaking my tradition of buying from them. Do you folks have any recommendations for, and/or experience with, other hardware and or hardware manufacturers to *avoid* while I continue my research and design phase? I want to stay as far from the "Demon Pit of Linux Non-support" as possible. Thanks for taking the time to read this and any constructive advice is always greatly appreciated. Kernel Panic (2.6.9-rc2)

For all those who like to run the latest from kernel.org.... I built a completely NOT MODULAR kernel, installed to /boot, edited /boot/grub/menu.lst, rebooted and got VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or unknown-block(3,3) Kernel Panic .... My /dev/hda3 is indeed 3, 3 according to ls -l /dev/hda3. /etc/fstab has /dev/hda3 as mounted / of type ext3 I put a printk into the relevant source file, and saw (unsurprisingly that the fs type in question at the moment of panic was 'ext3') Unlike the standart kernel from SuSE, I did not build ext3 nor jdb as modules, but built-in. Any ideas what could be wrong here? PS. I also tried out one of the kotd kernels. Which (after stealing the upgrade-modules.dep file from aaa_base in 9.1, as I'm running 9.0) installed and booted just fine... only without ipv4 networking at all. man dasdfmt did not help me

Doing a man dasdfmt did not help me. I see I need to use the -F -force, don't prompt me for a YES flag, but no joy! I can't get the syntax down. Any help today? Or, a way I can script this, hmm dasdfmt -b 4096 -f /dev/dasde < echo "y" ?? TIA /home/scripts # dasdfmt -b 4096 -F -f/dev/dasde Drive Geometry: 3338 Cylinders * 15 Heads = 50070 Tracks I am going to format the device /dev/dasde in the following way: Device number of device : 0x205 Labelling device : yes Disk label : VOL1 Disk identifier : 0X0205 Extent start (trk no) : 0 Extent end (trk no) : 50069 Compatible Disk Layout : yes Blocksize : 4096 --->> ATTENTION! <<--- All data of that device will be lost. OK, I tried the locate command, but it couldn't find it. I tried to install the RPM again, but I think it crashed before it finished. I have also tried to install the RPM with Red Carpet, but it says it's not a valid RPM. Bug reporting for SuSE

Is there a central place for recording bugs for SuSE? For example, kdemultimedia3-CD (3.3.0-7) has a bug that's fixed in cvs. Does SuSE know about it? I really don't know. Also, back when I was using Gentoo I patched an ebuild (build script) that fixed a display bug with Tk apps under kde, a bug that is still present in SuSE's Tk. I did download the source rpm for tk and will start looking at how to modify the rpm's spec files. Hope the learning curve is not too steep. ;) _________ Stephen If your desktop gets out of control easily, you probably have too much stuff on it that doesn't need to be there. Intel 865G graphics chip with SuSE 8.2

I have installed SuSE 8.2 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, with an Intel 865G graphics chip, and all I can get is a badly tuned 640x480 video mode. I tried setting the video memory to 8MB in the BIOS, and ran sax2 -r, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Any suggestions? I also notice that the wheel in my USB wheel mouse doesn't work.
