Help with KDE Menu - Switch User is missing

The Kmenu option to Switch User is missing. Not sure when it happened, about 3 weeks ago. I've looked in Menu Editor but have not found the "actions"section of the menu. There was a post in suse-kde about this same problem, but it related to errors in /var/log/messages with problems on that system writing to /var/run/xdmctl/xdmctl. I don't have that error message. I'm running suse 8.2 with kde 3.2.3. On a similar but less important issue, somewhere in my several upgrades of kde, the menu items have added the suse & suse work menu up into the kde menu. I still have the suse menu button and suse work menu button where they should be. These old original suse & suse work menus seem to now be menu options up among the kde menu items. I tried changing a setting in kde about this, but no change. Additionally there is a Lost & found item that contains MANY items, most of which look like screen savers, but not all, e.g. tea timer, moonphase etc. Any help would be appreciated. Jim Flanagan

Hi all, I remember from the times of SuSE 7.x, when after installing SuSE along with Windows 9x and 2k, the reboot menu has the option of rebooting one of the OS'es installed i.e. one could reboot into windows from linux without having to wait for the boot menu and press up or down to select the OS. Times has changed, now with grub we boot even the NSA systems (if well hacked i'm sure we can!) but, in my ignorance, such a feature was kind of interesting and i am particularly interested in having it back...So question is : How can one change the next boot within linux without making it definitive ? i know i can edit menu.lst and change the default entry but then, next reboot i will have to press a key to chose linux instead of windows, change the file again and so on...call me lazy if you want, but it really will save me a lot of time... I've digging and googling around, i've learned a lot about boot process, grub and lilo but still haven't found anything... Low RAM & 9.1

A very poor friend gave me his Packard Bell Celeron 366 & 64M of RAM to "fix". The originally planned fix was the usual one, reinstall doze 98 to get rid of the junkware, trojans, spyware & virii. Once I got that done, I talked him into converting to multiboot with Linux. He said OK, but only afterward did I think about the limited RAM problem. I stuck in another 32M stick & tried to do an FTP 9.1 install. After about 10 hours of errors and only 15% complete due to excess swap churning, I stole a 128M stick out of another machine to retry the install, and that is now finished. Now I need to pull my 128M back out (and my NIC). I can let him keep my 32M stick, for an installed total of 96M. He'll be on dialup only. So, I can reduce overhead by disabling at least some portion of the network, but how do I do that? If I use runlevel editor to disable network in 3 & 5, will dialup still work? What else can I uninstall or disable to ease the pain of only 96M of RAM (until he can get more, if he can at all)? Bad block checking

Hi, Being of previous Windows mindset, I am paranoid about data loss due to corrupt file systems. To ease my mind and make sure I am doing nearly everything I can to prevent data loss, I would like to check the linux ext3 fs at boot for bad blocks as the fsck check does not do this. Granted the fs system is self healing, with the journal, but the fs cannot normally check for bad blocks, which can result in data loss and which I assume is from the slow degradation of the HDD. Reading through the man page I see that e2fsck would do want I want and I am wondering which file I need to edit to have e2fsck run on a regular(every few days) or each time the machine is rebooted. I would assume that I would need a script, with the relevant e2fsck commands in it, that is called by the cron daemon but I need this script to run before the devices are mounted ie at a similar time to when the normal fsck runs, if it has to. Further thought says that I should just enter the name of the script I create into the boot process so that it is run at the same time or instead of the usual fsck command, however I do not know which file to add it into. Should I add an entry into my /etc/init.d/boot.local? I would assume that I cannot just put in the script name and path to the script which could be sitting in my home directory as the /home hasn't been mounted yet, right? Unable to create installation source

When I try to add this installation source I get this error message after 20-25 minutes: Unable to create installation source from URL 'ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for…'. Details: ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media) Try again? What does this mean? And what do I do to make this work? Thanks, Jerome

Backing UP Movie DVD's

Hi All, I have just moved over to SuSE 9.1 Pro from Windows XP and therefore I'm a linux beginner. On WinXP I used DVDxCopy to BACKUP my movie DVD's. I have just over 200 DVD's, 50 of which are kids DVD's. So having 2 young kids with a DVD player in their room I like to make a backup copy of the original DVD's and let them play the backup copies in their room. Before I had DVDxCopy I had to buy Shrek twice as they knackered the first one. Anyway my question in there something that is similar to DVDxCopy for SuSE (Linux). This app was soooo easy to use. You start it up, put the movie in the DVD drive then tick Entire DVD and then click Start. 40 minutes later you had a perfect copy. Thanks in advance for your help. Martin
