The Kmenu option to Switch User is missing. Not sure when it happened, about 3 weeks ago. I've looked in Menu Editor but have not found the "actions"section of the menu. There was a post in suse-kde about this same problem, but it related to errors in /var/log/messages with problems on that system writing to /var/run/xdmctl/xdmctl. I don't have that error message. I'm running suse 8.2 with kde 3.2.3. On a similar but less important issue, somewhere in my several upgrades of kde, the menu items have added the suse & suse work menu up into the kde menu. I still have the suse menu button and suse work menu button where they should be. These old original suse & suse work menus seem to now be menu options up among the kde menu items. I tried changing a setting in kde about this, but no change. Additionally there is a Lost & found item that contains MANY items, most of which look like screen savers, but not all, e.g. tea timer, moonphase etc. Any help would be appreciated. Jim Flanagan

Jim, Make sure the file $KDE_DIR/share/config/kdm/Xservers contains entries to configure additional X sessions; the lines may be there but commented out. Mine looks like that: :0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :0 :1 local@tty2 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :1 :2 local@tty3 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :2 :3 local@tty4 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :3 Also have a look at /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, where there should be similar entries. The problem posted on the suse-kde list was related to an i/o-error that I experienced on the /var/run/xmdctl directory. This dir must be writable for the server, as its socket files go into it. I discovered that problem becauase kdm was verbose about it in /avr/log/messages.

Hi Andreas, I do have a similar entry in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, but only one, an "0" entry. I'm not sure where to find $kde_dir/share/config/kdm/Xservers. Is there a file in there that I can search for? Thanks, Jim Flanagan

Hi . If you are running suse 9.0 or 9.1 then $kde_dir/share/config/kdm/Xservers is actually /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers... i must admit i do not know why people cant make it plain for the unshure but still thats there perogative . Sorry I wasn't clear enough. $KDE_DIR refers to the directory where you have installed your KDE desktop, probably /opt/kde3. If so, then you will find the Xservers file in the /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm directory. If KDE is installed in another directory, you will have to look in the respective place. Edit this file and add the missing lines as shown in my previous post. Do the same with the Xservers file you found in the /etc/X11/xdm directory. Then you may restart the kdm process with the command (as root): 'rckdm restart', or simply do a reboot of your machine. I don't remember well, but I think simply logging off from KDE and logging on again will not be enough.

OK, that did the trick. Many thanks. Quesiton, I had this function before, what could have changed it to only one entry? Also, what do the switches -nolisten tcp and -br do?? Many thanks, Jim Flanagan
