Why am I paying SuSE for a distro if the software developers bundle the software?

I asked SuSE support about the lack of Gnome Conduits and this is what I got... "Unfortunatly it is up to the developer of the software to package it up for each distribution they wish to support, unfortunatly, if the package is not available for SuSE linux all I could suggest would be searching for the sources and compiling it on your system, beyond that theres not much we could do." So... (SuSE team listening) does this mean that every single RPM installed in SuSE is provided by the people who developed the software? The Kernel, Gnome, KDE, all of that comes to SuSE already ready to go. SuSE doesn't do anything, really. What, then, does SuSE do? Burn them all onto a CD for me? Seriously, this is the most ridiculous response I've ever received from a SuSE rep. I don't, for a minute, believe that the developers of Gnome-pilot-conduits created RPMs, packages, etc. for Mandrake, Fedora, Ark Linux, FreeBSD, Debian, etc. but not for SuSE. That's absurd. All I wanted was a straight answer and I got the biggest line of bull ever. Preston

Additional information: I just got the following mail from a reader of my August mail about this problem. It looks like the ADF problem is related to newer versions of the epson sane library, as version 1.0.8 worked, see below. Thanks, Terje J. subversion problems

We were using subversion version 1.06 fine with no problems. I saw updated version of the RPMS for SuSE become available and upgraded to version 1.08. I noticed that with version 1.08, our RapidSVN and TortoiseSVN clients running Windows break. Basically they both give timeout errors. However, the subversion repository can be browsed fine with a web browser with no problems. Since svn clients such as RapidSVN and TortoiseSVN are needed here, I had no choice but to back out of the subversion 1.08 upgrade. I could not located 1.06 RPMs anywhere but found my copy of the 1.05 RPMS. Installing subversion 1.05 RPMS seems has gotten us working for now. This leads me with two questions, is anyone else out there able to successfully use svn clients such as Tortoise svn or RapidSVN to browse subversion repositories while running subversion 1.08 on SuSE (with apache2)? Also, does anyone know where I can get my hands on subversion 1.06 RPMS for SuSE? Postfix question

Hello SuSE people, Have a question about Postfix. Back about the 9th or 10th I upgraded KDE to 3.3. That included Kmail which is my only e-mail program. The upgrade screwed up Kmail and I sent several messages which were refused by the server and remained in the outbox. Went looking and found that the outgoing SMTP was incorrect, changed it and resent my messages OK. Yesterday and today , while downloading my mail I received messages about undelivered mail from 5 or 6 days ago and was returned to me. These were evidently the messages I tried to send and failed. The question is: Does Postfix have anything to do with Kmail?? I don't know but would think not. With Spamassassin? And were the messages received by the server? even though it was stated that my messages were refused? and just now returned? and why if they had valid delivery addresses? Procmail + postfix

Hello I have changed my MTA from sendmail to postfix and now i am not able to use procmail with postfix. I think it is the rights problem. I log procmail to a file /tmp/procmail.log and i keep all incoming mails in /var/spool/mail/postall and if you look at the file privileges, after sending mail for the first time, you see: -rw------- 1 john users 656 Sep 8 15:06 /tmp/procmail.log and the same for /var/spool/mail/postall. That is the state of the files after i sent mail from a user to user john. And then when I am trying to send mail to different user, the log says error while writting /tmp/procmail.log. Obviously considering the rights of the file. That means procmail always start its processes as user $LOGNAME (maybe not all of them) So is there any other way how to fix it than just change the rights of the file /tmp/procmail.log for group -w- and all the files in /var/spool/mail/... and /var/spool/mail/postall and so on I think this solution is not very secure, all the mailboxes of the users with rights for group "users" writable. All my users are in the group "users" I am starting procmail as user nobody in the file master.cf and in the file main.cf using mailbox_command = /usr/bin/procmail Jan West

OnlineUpdate is run automatically when scheduled but the mail notification never occurs. I've tried different settings for MAIL_REPORTS_TO without any success. 3. logrotate also runs as called by cron. The logrotate scripts run as expected but the "mail" command fails and the logs are never mailed. 4. postfix mail log shows no activity at all when the above events occur. I have the same setup on 8.2 and it mails the reports as expected. I've spent days trying to get this to work. What am I missing here? Jeff

Package installation mess

Hi, I am currently running SuSE 9.1 Professional and I find that the package installation mechanisms are quite a mess. I see that there are at least three different set of utilities available - each with its own set of command line and graphical interface. 1. Yast2 : This is what comes with SuSE 9.1 professional. Command line yast and graphical yast2. 2. apt-get: This is apt4rpm tool. It has synaptics, kynpatics etc. graphical interfaces. Some popular packagers (e.g. guru, packman etc.) use this. 3. Red Carpet: This is Ximian's red carpet, which is now bought by Novell. It has command-line rug and the redcarpet. I have to work with all these because some of the things are available in only one of them. Yast2 is of course needed as it is the distribution's default packager - all updates come through it (I think). I keep apt-get for some of the packages by guru, packman etc. I use redcarpet because of ximian-connector and evolution's develoment versions for suse. I think this is a mess. There should be just one way to install packages. Now that Ximian and Suse both are part of Novell, is there a way to come up with a unified package installer for future versions of Suse? Osho
