I'm sure your getting board of this now. OK, I tried the locate command, but it couldn't find it. I tried to install the RPM again, but I think it crashed before it finished. I have also tried to install the RPM with Red Carpet, but it says it's not a valid RPM. Ok , this is good news! you need libdvdcss and libdvdread, get them from packman (bookmark the packman website, it is a precious resource for SuSErs). http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=121 For Libdvdcss, it's a bit more complicated, since it is technically illegal to watch dvd's under linux, even if you own the dvd. But follow the instructions and it's real easy. http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=122 To use locate, you need to intall findultils and findutils-locate , they are on the SuSE 9.1 dvd; use yast. The rpm ( SuSE 9.1 ) for kdvdbackup can be found at http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=12698 The errors in the log file of kdvdbackup where from a physically damaged dvd. Must include a option to read again damaged areas, for example 20 times, and then exit with an error. That is the way dvddecrypter for win does. Maybe in the next version. The dvdbackup to be compiled needs the dvdnav and dvdplay libraries installed, resp. dvdnav-devel and dvdplay-devel rpms. Personally I use the kdvdbackup to backup the DVD to the hard disk. Then the DVD shrink to make it 4.7. It works with current wine. It can't load any file or DVD from it's GUI, but accepts the DVD's main IFO as a parameter. So, make a association, for example associate the video_ts.ifo to be opened with DVD shrink, and voila :) When double-click the video_ts.ifo of the ripped DVD the DVD shrink will fired up, ready to shrink it ..... Hope to help.. Nick Protopapas

"Illegal to watch" under linux? Not anymore ;) http://www.turbolinux.com/news/040722.html Haven't really read it but I wonder if SuSE will bundle it, too... You would still need libdvdcss to be able to read encrypted dvd I would think, but I wonder if you could do it with dd if=/dev/dvd of=movie.iso, then use k3b to burn the iso. Maybe I'll try that to test. I have remotely burned CDs with a similar method. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

Most movie DVDs are longer than the 4.7GB capacity limit of a DVD+/-R media. You will need dvdshrink to further compress the video contents to make things fit. As mentioned before, dvdshrink is a windows program but can be used under wine, but dvdshrink later than 3.0beta won't work. The dvdshrink.org site no longer offers 3.0beta for download, but you can still find it here: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/dvdshrinkold/ -Ti

dvdshrink 3.1 & 3.2 works under wine and crossover office. You just can't navigate with "open disk" or "open files" to your dvd-rom drive. But you can assosiate in konqueror *.IFO files to be opened with wine (or cxwine if you're using crossover office) and then open konqueror and goto /media/dvd, or wherever you have your dvd mounted (or ripped), and click on VIDEO_TS.IFO. That will open dvdshrink which will start analyzing your dvd. After that you can adjust the compression settings and backup. -- Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)

Thanks for the tip! Associating .ifo files under konqueror to invoke wine and dvdshrink is a neat trick. -Ti

-Ti This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you associate files under konqueror. With ifo files it does not remember the application.

Oops, it should have read: konqueror -> Settings -> Configure konqueror -> File Associations You must insert a DVD into your drive and go to /media/dvdrecorder (or wherever your DVD is normally "mounted"), and associate the video_ts/video_ts.ifo file. -Ti
