I just tried ULB Gnome again -- via apt -- and I had some observations / questions. 1) All of my icons within Nautilus are the generic "paper" icon. I tried switching icon themes to no avail. 1.5) The "Computer" icon on the Nautilus toolbar... isn't. Nothing appears in that space. 2) None of my OpenOffice icons seem to work any more, including the ones on the generic SuSE menu. I created a launcher on a toolbar that calls /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice, though, and this works fine. Double-clicking an OO.o file within Nautilus doesn't do anything either. 3) Evolution... a) Won't display the monospace font I like B&H Lucida Typewriter) in 9pt size. It only goes down to 10. Quibble, for most people, but I've ditched whole distro's because of font issues before. b) Gnome-pilot still seems broken. At least, it won't talk to my Tungsten C, which has no problems sync'ing with a GTK2-ized version of JPilot I compiled myself. Is this (still) a known problem, or should it be working? This alone might have been about 50% of the reason I wanted to try Evo 2.0. Thanks, dk P.S. I had to "GPG::Check false;" in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/gpg-checker.conf to get the install to proceed. Shouldn't this be stated somewhere? I would have gladly checked some keys into my ring, but I don't see James putting a key "out there" to grab. All but 1 package had no signature. I think it was Epiphany that was holding things up.

SUSE 9.1 comes with prelink support, but doesn't use prelink by default. My unscientific test was running "time kate" from a konsole window - because this gives fairly repeatable results and the time returned is, in the case of Kate, pretty much the time to being "ready for input." Out of the box "time kate" reported 4.5s. Pre-linking kate cut about 0.5s off this time. (A little poking about seemed to show that pre-linking cut 0.5s off the loading time of most KDE apps.) But I also noticed that doing an "export LANG=C" before launching kate cut a full second(!) off the startup time. (My default LANG on this box is en_GB.UTF-8) A quick analysis of the output from "strace -r konsole" showed that indeed, it was taking about 1 second for X11 to parse the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose file. Perhaps one of the reasons that some people have reported 9.1 as feeling slower than 9.0 is the change to UTF8 as the default locale in SuSE? Personal 9.1 / SLES 9 packages

First, please dismiss any ignorance since I recently switched from RedHat/Gnome to SuSE/KDE. I'd loaded SuSE 9.1 Personal on my desktop/makeshift server here at work, however, the apache-perl-mysql app I was trying to run was being a pain (Apache2+modperl didn't mix well for this one). So I reloaded it with SLES 9 (since we have a Novell site license) and everything is working perfectly (with the older stable version). However, I noticed that when I was searching for packages with YAST Add/Update Software Packages, the choices offered between Personal 9.1 and SLES 9 are quite different (as I'd expect, personal has things that server does not). So how do I find some of the packages that came with Personal 9.1, and do the 9.1 installers work OK with SLES 9 (or do I have to do something special)? I.E. Since this is a tinkering box to some degree, I wouldn't mind having some of the personal/AV type apps along with some goodies, such as screensavers. Thanks, Erik

Split Join on SuSE

Anyone know of a app that will join files of somefile.00, somefile.01, etc. etc. into the complete binary and split a binary into such a split? Is there something that I installed that I am missing? Adobe Reader plugin causes massive CPU usage in SuSE9.1

Hi All, I have seen that the CPU usage on my SuSE9.1 machine skyrockets whenever the pdf plugin is loaded for Mozilla. To reproduce this, just go to any website and load a pdf within Mozilla via the plugin method. Run 'top' or 'xosview' and notice the CPU usage. BTW, this only happens for the plugin - If I save the pdf and invoke from a shell, I don't see the same CPU hogging. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a workaround/fix for this for SuSE9.1? Packages: acroread-5.09-4.2 mozilla-1.7.2-9.1 TIA. Pete

Real Media Won't make Audio CD/Video CD on k3b

Mail Notification Problems

OnlineUpdate is run automatically when scheduled but the mail notification never occurs. I've tried different settings for MAIL_REPORTS_TO without any success. 3. logrotate also runs as called by cron. The logrotate scripts run as expected but the "mail" command fails and the logs are never mailed. 4. postfix mail log shows no activity at all when the above events occur. I have the same setup on 8.2 and it mails the reports as expected. I've spent days trying to get this to work. What am I missing here? Jeff

Ldap config in YAST

I've got LDAP working if I avoid YAST altogether and configure LDAP via config files in /etc/openldap and /etc/nssswitch.conf on both server and client. I had a bit of a poke at the config in YAST, but couldn't work out how to. I got as far as adding "configuration modules" but I don't know what those are in LDAP terms, I have no idea what the templates do, or what info I need to put where. Just accepting defauilts (except for the rootdn and manager info which I supplied) didn't seem to get me anywhere - I couldn't authenticate against the LDAP server. The admin manual says nothing about YAST that I could see, only about doing it via editing config files. Is the YAST way documented anywhere? Any information at all on how to set up simple YAST authentication and automounting of homedirs? Zebee

Running e2fsck, I get Bad Magic Number
