Shutdown/Splash Problem

I am running two computers, both with SuSE 9.1. One (the Athlon XP one) works fine, but the other doesn't. It is an AMD K6-II and is using a CRUD Monitor. It runs 640x480 resolution because it can't go any higher. When I boot/shutdown there is no splash. Also, when I shutdown it gets to the last point where it beep's twice, then stops without powering down. Could it be ACPI? If so, how do I fix this?

wireless network cards

Help anyone!! I've just loaded Suse 9.1 pro on an HP laptop. I've got my 100BT (eth0) working but I haven't been able to get my PCMCIA wireless card to work. Yast see the card and knows what it is but I can't get it to connect. I've tried my NetgearWG511 (802.11g), a Netgear WG521 (802.11b) and a Linksys WPC11 (also 802.11b). At least with the Linksys I get a green power light. Any suggestions?? Am I missing a kernel module or subsystem entry??

9.1 Laptop Shutdown Reboot

Hi all, I've two laptops, while installing 9.1 and then updating system, I think I noticed that I cannot now shut the system (I think I could at least reboot properly prior to downloading system updates after installation). Both appear to begin the shutdown process but hangs at the following: Running /etc/init.d/halt.local Anyway to correct this?

Yast Post SuSE KDE 3.3 update

Greets; Ive noticed a very strange behaviour with Yast post updating to KDE3.3 suse rpms. All aspects of yast remain functional except "install software". If this is run the machine goes into complete lock-up in a few seconds after yast starts scanning what software has been installed. All efforts to resolve this (rebuilding the db etc etc) are fruitless. This behaviour started immediately post ugrading KDE by pointing yast to the suppplementary (and associated path) KDE rpms (exact path varies of course). The only other addition to the system was running an automated update shortly their after. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on here or how to repair this behaviour other then removing the SuSE supplied KDE rpms for 9.1? Yast remains broken on for adding and removing applications. All other aspects remain functional. Regards /ch

Viewing man pages in Mozilla?

I'd like to use Mozilla rather than Konqueror to view man pages, since Mozilla is my default browser. But if I attempt to view them in Mozilla I get the message "man is not a registered protocol". So how do I register a protocol such as "man"? Paul Abrahams

r8169 nic full-duplex

Hi, I'm trying to set up networking with a motherboard that has an onboard = Realtek r8169 nic. Unfortunately, the system autodetects half-duplex and needs to be forced to full duplex. ethtool eth0 fails for the = r8169, and I haven't been able to figure out how to set full duplex. Any ideas? Booting Problem

I was following Carl Spitzer's advice concerning getting my firewire drive to let me write to it(It worked,thanks Carl). He also noticed that in my fstab I had my floppy and dvdrecorder devices under subfs and he suggested I add 'users' to the fs= part of the media under subfs,which I did using vim. But I still couldn't write to the floppy even though I owned it. So I decided to run SuSEconfig-no help. Then I decided to reboot and this has led to a serious problem for me. When I reboot I get the message that: ' fsck failed, my / partition is being mounted read-only' and I must login as root. However when I run mount I get this: (none):~#mount /dev/hdb2 on / type(reseiserfs) (rw) /dev/hdb2 on / type(reseiserfs) (rw) Two entries for the same file system! And the filesystem is mounted (rw). Running: (none):~#fsck fails and I'm told to run it manually. But when I run fsck.reseiserfs --fix-fixable I get this: (none):~#fsck.reseiserfs --fix-fixable Partition /dev/hdb2 is mounted with write permissions, cannot check it. When I mount the system read-only it gets checked but nothing gets fixed. The first time this happened four days ago I was able to solve it by checking the 'initialize the / partition' box in the bootloader configuration dialogue in the rescue script of the 9.1 installation disk. But this time that doesn't work. I've also tried reloading a generic copy of the boot loader. When I try using the advanced setting in the rescue script to initialize my / partition I alway get an error ( something about high memory and low memory). If I tell it to try again the module crashes and I have to reboot. If I use the automatic option I can edit the bootloader module successfully but I have to go the the whole time consuming process. I've been trying to add a copy of my 'boot_problems' file which contains a copy of fstab to a floppy to transfer to this machine. '(none):~#cat /media/floppy/boot_problems' on my unbootable machine shows my boot_problems file but when I mount that floppy on this machine it is empty which I would expect the latter since not having write access to the floppy is why I rebooted in the first place. But I didn't expect the unbootable machine to show me my file when I run 'cat /media/floppy/boot_problems' even when there is no floppy loaded in the unbootable machine.! I don't know what else to do except: (none):~#fsck.reseiserfs --rebuild-tree. But I don't know if this will make matters better or worse or even work since fsck.reseirfs --fix-fixable does not. I've run the automatic rescue script option on the installation disk successfully several times so I'm not convinced its a file system or a boot loader problem. Can anyone help me get my system back? Hello, Andrew. I have done this without any problems on a pair of laptops, one HP and one Dell. Both came with XP Pro pre-installed. On the HP, I was able to use the SuSE installation to shrink the NTFS partition down to make room for SuSE 9.1, and grub was installed to the MBR, and it automatically added an entry to boot into XP. Of course, the NTFS shrink caused a chkdsk at the next boot into XP, but other than that everything was fine. On the Dell, the NTFS shrink wouldn't work, so I used Partition Tragic to shrink the NTFS partition, and then just installed SuSE into the empty space. Again, grub in the MBR has an entry for XP. I am curious about what you've heard about problems with this kind of setup. I wonder if you've got your wires crossed with the old LILO and the 1024 cylinder limit thing. That hasn't been an issue for a while now, and AFAIK grub never suffered from that problem. In your setup, you should be able to leave the 80GB Windows drive as the master, install SuSE onto the 20GB slave, and just tell it to put grub into the MBR on hda, i.e. the master. Website won't stay open with Mozilla. Where to begin looking for a fix?

I'm using SuSE 9.1 pro and Mozilla 1.6. For months I have had no problems. Then about 2 weeks ago I started having problems with one website. Other than regular updates using the Yast2 on-line update feature and RedCarpet (KDE and Pacman updates only), I have not made any changes. To the best of my knowledge I have not changed any settings. When I go to this site -----> http://www.optiboard.com/forums/ my browser calls up the home page. No problem. Then when I click on any of the discussion forums (for example, "General Discussion Forum"), that page opens without problems. Then.... If I click on any discussion thread within that forum (or on ANY discussion thread in ANY other forum on this website), the page opens to the thread but then Mozilla immediately closes. This is the only website where I am having this problem. I don't have any idea where to begin looking for a fix. I have contacted the webmaster but he is a Windows person and can provide no assistance. Any ideas, gurus? Thanks! Gil

Thunderbird 0.8 Can't Read Emails Right

I use SuSE 9.1 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5. I have almost 1700 emails and don't wan't to lose them. When I upgrade Thunderbird to 0.8 it doesn't read the messages right. It reads them similar to the way they seem from a text editor. Is there a way to export the 'Inbox' file, or am I stuck with Thunderbird 0.5. Version 0.6 and 0.7 had the same problem. I tried various SuSE 9.1 RPMs and the source directly from Mozilla.
