Does my ACPI actually work?! (SUSE 9.1 vs. MyLaptop)

Dear All, I get while booting up my laptop this single error-message: Oct 4 18:50:46 khazad-dum [powersaved][3940]: WARNING in Function ACPI_Interface; line 26: could not set battery alarm, you may need to force polling mode. Exept of this, everything seems be OK; no other error messages concerning ACPI, or related. But the interesting with the above error-message is, that I have exactly the suggested settings as in /etc/powersave.conf stands POWERSAVED_FORCE_BATTERY_POLLING=yes Any ideas? Thanks, Peli

cannot burn CDs

I've been using k3b for quite a while now, but noticed yesterday that I could not burn CDs anymore. The debug output appears to be a kernel/SCSI issue. I updated my kernel to the most recent version, and still get the same error. Look for the RC_LANG variable. However, note that if you do this your internationalisation support may suffer. The reason SUSE switched to using UTF-8 as default is that ultimately this is the way things are going. UTF8 is on balance a good thing (imho) because it frees us once and for all from the mess that was codepages. Note that it isn't UTF8 per se that slows down the startup, but one particular aspect of UTF8 support - the parsing of the input locale by X11. If that could be accelerated you could have the best of both worlds - the convenience of UTF8 and the faster startup of LANG=C. With respect to prelinking, it has its pros and cons. There are still some apps which don't like it, and you have to re-prelink after updating libs etc. I was interested to note that SuSE have put in place a prelink configuration, including a "blacklist" of apps not to prelink, so perhaps they are moving in this direction. It would be nice, for example, to have an option at the end of the install to go and prelink everything. It's well known that Linux is not affected by any of the viruses that catch Windows as soon as the computer is turned on ... Nevertheless Linux is affected by spyware. My computer is unfortunately a victim of this form of advertising although I've been running SuSE since I bought it 3 years ago. I'd appreciate some help to get rid of these parasitic processes dwelling in my computer. Thank you in advance. MEM

Procmail + postfix

Hello I have changed my MTA from sendmail to postfix and now i am not able to use procmail with postfix. I think it is the rights problem. I log procmail to a file /tmp/procmail.log and i keep all incoming mails in /var/spool/mail/postall and if you look at the file privileges, after sending mail for the first time, you see: -rw------- 1 john users 656 Sep 8 15:06 /tmp/procmail.log and the same for /var/spool/mail/postall. That is the state of the files after i sent mail from a user to user john. And then when I am trying to send mail to different user, the log says error while writting /tmp/procmail.log. Obviously considering the rights of the file. That means procmail always start its processes as user $LOGNAME (maybe not all of them) So is there any other way how to fix it than just change the rights of the file /tmp/procmail.log for group -w- and all the files in /var/spool/mail/... and /var/spool/mail/postall and so on I think this solution is not very secure, all the mailboxes of the users with rights for group "users" writable. All my users are in the group "users" I am starting procmail as user nobody in the file master.cf and in the file main.cf using mailbox_command = /usr/bin/procmail Jan West

[General] Where to add custom startup scripts

Hi all! I have two binaries, and one script i need to start right after network is up. (the ADSL login and no-ip client) How do i make sure those get started at boot and the right runlevels?
