8.2, NVidia, XFree86 4.3

We are expereinceing a strange problem: We have an app that displays a 3D seismic volume, (and which uses paletted testures and texture objects) Running with the latest NVidia drivers on a 7.3 system , this works just fine. Doing same on an 8.2 system with same NVidia drivers (wether from the .run file, through wahetevr mechanism Suse installer picks them or by installing from source) the texture objetcs/paletted textures get corrupted. All other OGL apps under 8.2 (quake3, gears &c) work just fine. Problem is 100% reproducible on different hardware comboes (geforce 2 MX up to Quadro 4) Quesions: 1) Has anyone seen this behaviour before ? 2) Is this an issue with 8.2 ? Installing RPMs - path (newbie)

I am using SUSE 8.2 and I often get error messages like this when attempting to install rpm packages: "checking for pthread_create in -lpthread... yes checking for pthread_create in -lc_r... no> checking for glib-config... no> checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.10... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. configure: error: glib could not be found Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.6510 (%prep) linux:/home/chris/downloads # rpm -q glib glib-1.2.10-372" I don't know where glib is and I haven't been able to find it. Do any of you have any idea whether Mozilla in 8.2 is compiled with GTK1 or GTK2. I have no clue where to find this information. Disappearing icons

I just had my device / path icons on the left side of my screen (SuSE 8.2) disappear. I rebooted the system and they came back, but I'm wondering what made them vanish. Does anyone have an ide? What about bringing them back without having to reboot?

kill/restart sound

I googled this and am having no luck - how can I kill the sound on my system (7.3) between say, 8:00 to 8:30 and turn it back on again? I can't find anything related to sound to stop and start. Installation of 8.2 - Multiple SCSI Adapters

Hi all, I seem to have a problem with installing SuSE (or any Linux, for that matter) on a system with multiple SCSI adapters. I think the problem is how the system is configured, not with SuSE or Linux itself, so I was hoping someone could tell me what I might be doing wrong. M/B - Abit BE6-II 800Mhz P3 768MB Ram, onboard HPT366 IDE (disabled) SCSI Adapter #1 (in PCI slot #2) - Adaptec 2940UW, SCSI ID = 2 - CD R/W Drive, SCSI ID = 1 - DVD Drive, SCSI ID = 5 - Hard Drive #1, SCSI ID = 6 SCSI Adapter #2 (in PCI slot #4) - Adaptec 2940U2W, SCSI ID = 7 - Hard Drive #2, SCSI ID = 0 - Hard Drive #3, SCSI ID = 4 When I place the SuSE 8.2 DVD installation disk, I get the message on the boot screen (BIOS) that a bootable disk is in the DVD drive. The IsoLinux image boots (pretty SuSE 8.2 installation Welcome screen), and I see the progress bar load the image from the DVD. Then the screen goes black, with just a blinking cursor, and hangs there. I don't see any other information that helps me see what's going wrong. I have tried everything I can think of in BIOS settings, SCSI BIOS settings, etc. to make this work, but nothing seems to help. Everything has the latest BIOS updates. I've looked on the SuSE support db, and I don't see anything that resembles this problem. I've googled around and haven't found anything, and the folks on my local linux ug list don't seem to know anything. Does anyone out there have some insight that might be able to help me? Broken fonts

The question is slightly unusual: how do I break a font? You see, I don't like to have text on my desktop, I like the icons to be displayed without the annoying text underneath. In the past I've solved this by setting the desktop font to a broken font that wouldn't display. But in 8.2, all my fonts work :( So can anyone tell me where I might find a broken font? I'm not too hot with the fontconfig stuff, perhaps there's something I can put in the config for that to make the system think it has a font that doesn't exist, or that doesn't have any characters? Any ideas?

Yes - I am doing both Forwarding and Masquerading....i.e. I don't want my IP 192 on the internet (RFC1198 specifically stops it). But I have to ROUTE it myself. The masqerading is to present one (real) IP address to the internet for any machine in my network. So right now I have a 3-NIC firewall box that has eth0 to 'raw" internet with a real IP address eth1 to a DMZ webserver and eth2 to this next (8.2) box. This 8.2 box is the only one being replaced (at this time). It runs DNS, CUPS, X, and will run Shorewall - but right now, NO firewall is running. Basic routing has to be done first and should NOT rely on the firewall. Shorewall when properly installed also has the ability (with "shorewall clear") to let just routing though without any firewall rules. So that is where I am stuck, because of the "new" way SuSE does it. So right now - my only access to help is here at work - cause I can't get what I need (right now) from home where I have this network....sigh... - Bill "Bruce S. What you are looking for with 'forwarding' is normally called 'masquerading' and deals with giving your other machines access to the internet. Right? This is normally a function of your firewall setup. What firewall are you using? Either Shorewall or SuSEfirewall2 has a setting in the config that will setup the masquerading.... I guess you can do it with YAST but hold off on that until you have all the machines talking to each other within the local network. Then use YAST to set up your firewall if you're using SuSEfirewall2.
