NFS changes in 8.2

All - I just yesterday upgraded my laptop installation to 8.2 from the DVD, all seems to have worked, but the NFS server behavior and dhcp server behavior have changed. Under 8.1/kernel 2.4.19 I was able to Jumpstart Solaris clients from the laptop, using either bootp or dhcp. Now, I can't even "net boot" a Solaris client, and NFS seems to be at the heart of it. Question for productivity gurus: Are there any multi-functional pieces of equipment (printer/copier/scanner/fax machine, all in one) that work with Linux? My wife is busy arranging the port of a reasonably large network from Windoze to Linux, and this appears to be a major stumbling block. Local equipment vendors claim no such thing exists and that it can't be done. I fume at this (:-)) and insist that anything that can be done on a network can be done with Linux on a network. APT packages for SuSE 8.2

Hi there! Did anyone on this list have / use APT for updating SuSE 8.2? I've checked both ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/Linux/MIRROR.suse/apt-packages and ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/apt4rpm/suse/extra and I didn't find any rpm's built for SuSE 8.2 I am talking about the "official" rpm's of APT build of SuSE 8.2 Regards, Radu

[OT] Multiple public IP broadband router

Hi, Anyone have any experience with a broadband router (preferably wireless, but wouldn't have to be) that supports multiple public static IP's? I was looking at the MultiTech RF500S, but some reviews say it supports multiple public IPs, some say it only supports one, some say it does after a firmware upgrade. After googling for an hour I am not seeing many inexpensive (100-150 USD) alternatives so I figured I'd ping the list to see if anyone has other recomendations. So your email first got queued on "tigger" for delivery to "nqs(a)tmcom.com".. then I got "tmcom.com" up, so your mail went there.. and got forwarded to "nqs(a)tigger.tmcom.com".. BUT.. since "tigger" was busy trying to send out all of this junk, the server utilization spiked.. and I had more than 12 processes running at once (more like 25-30).. after 12 processes, Sendmail stops accepting incoming email.. so "tigger" sent your mail to "tmcom.com", but wouldn't accept incoming mail BACK from "tmcom.com".. I spent a lot of time this week trying to get the mail spool cleaned out of "bogus" spam messages and get the #s down to a manageable level.. among other things, you can't even do an "ls *5*" on 70,000 messages because the result is 50,000 messages, and LS won't take that many parameters.. after about 4,000 files it starts to die, so any scripts I found to clear out "bounced" mail puked.. I ended up moving files off into sub-dirs and processing them as well as I could and then merging things back.. before I finally remembered a program called "xargs" that let me start churning through all 70,000 files.. which cut it down to 40-50k This morning, I'm down to 16k. Somewhere along the line, I also managed to screw up the permissions on "tigger" such that even when the server utilization wasn't high, it couldn't take in new mail.. I fixed that yesterday afternoon. As of this morning, things are looking better and processing "normally".. and I've been re-investigating additional spam-blocking measures. I'm already using a few black-lists and rejecting a ton of mail (which, in this case, almost hurt me more than helped).. Other good news - I have cable at my new house now, so I can keep my finger on things better again. It was hard to do with just dialup.. and this week's been a busy one for me, getting home at 10pm most nights anyhow.. That help explain it? Search broken in YAST install/remove

Hello everyone, I have just done another 8.2 install on a clean drive and just noticed a frustrating bug. Goto Control Panel > YAST2 > Software >Install/Remove Software. Now goto the Filter: dropdown box and select "Search". Now when I try to enter text in the search box nothing happens. Can't even get the flashing 'text entry' cursor. On other 8.2 installs this works OK This failing system is up to date on SuSE YOU fixes. Any one else seen this? Ideas? Thanks ......... PeterB

Massive problems compiling a kernel

I ve a fresh Suse 8.2 installation. The problem. It s not possible to build a kernel. I get tons of errors trying to compile an original 2.4.20er or a Suse-kernel. This happens on several different machines. It must be a genetral problem because using elder systems works without any problems. Any hints? Ralf Prengel
