Downsizing existing Linux partition

Thanks to everyone who's replied to my question about upgrading to 8.2 via modem. Thanks especially to those who offered to send their retail CDs on to me; however, I've got it into my head to try this crazy FTP thing, and I won't be dissuaded. (Hey, that's what Wget is FOR. Wind it up, check on it every couple of days, feed and water...) Basically, my plan of attack is to wget the whole directory tree, once it's available, then slap in the boot disks and get the party started. The trick is where to put the files. My Linux partition, of course, will be going away when I install 8.2, while my Windows partition isn't nearly big enough to hold six gigs of files. (I only put it in at all for my brother.) So I need to carve some space off my Linux partition and make it into a DOS drive to store the files on. (Good thing I don't have a ton of MP3s or anything.) I'm not sure how to go about this, though. Can anyone talk me through reducing the size of my Linux partition by 6 gigs without trashing everything on it, then turning the freed space into a DOS drive? I could probably figure the latter part out myself, but I don't want to take a chance with the former part...

Install media

I upgraded my 8.1 box at work to 8.2 using the dvds. As this was my personal copy of 8.2 I keep the media at home. But I copied the CDs to keep in my office. I wanted to install something from the CD's today, and Yast2 of course wanted the dvd at first. I changed the installation source to CD, but didn't notice that this entry in the source list was for the 8.1 CDs. You can't edit these entries - just add or delete. So I tried to add a new CD source, and it worked - after a fashion. I put in CD1 and added the source /media/cdrom/suse/i586. But when I do a search for certain packages, it of course only looks on CD 1. If a package isn't on CD1, I'll have to set up a new source for CD2, CD3, etc... The source entry for the 8.1 CDs doesn't require that a CD even be in the drive when you search for packages. Then when you select "accept" to install the package(s), it tells you which CD to put in. How can I create such a source entry for the 8.2 CDs? K3b does not work with DVD-R/DVD-RAM drive

I got Panasonic LF-D310 drive. It is recognized by system. SuSE 8.2 even creates CD-R icon for it. In K3bSetup however it's shown only in reader's list. I cannot add it manually. I thought that maybe I need dvdrtools so I installed this package, no difference. Both cdrecord -scanbus and dvdrecord -scanbus can recognize my drive. XCDRoast on the other hand has no problems with detection but does not support DVD writting. Any hints? thanks Mariusz

Trying to see streaming video

Hello I've built a dual-boot (Win2K/SuSE8.2) box for newbies. I'm trying to make sure that most of the Windows functionality is available to them. I went to the www.thematrix.com to see if the trailer was visible but I've been unable to see it in mozilla/konqueror/netscape. Before I embark on a web fishing expedition I' d like to know if anyone has been here before. I've got Plugger and Flash "plugged-in" as they say but to no avail. TIA Cheers

Apache died

Server is 8.1 and sits in a DMZ. Mainly it does mail and basically Apache is there to run Squirrelmail, so I can check mail from outside. I don't use it that frequently, but it's nice to have. I have set it up with ssl and self-signed certificates, in order to use https. Has been running fine for ~150 days. Two days ago I was working in the office, and wanted to check my mail. Couldn't connect to the server. Tried a couple of things (telnet to port 80, a portscan) Port 80 and 443 closed. Got home, logged in, rcapache status dead Looking at the logs, it died at 00:16 that night: error_log says: [Wed May 7 00:16:10 2003] [notice] SIGUSR1 received. Doing graceful restart [Wed May 7 00:16:31 2003] [error] Cannot resolve host name Scum.kinkon --- ignoring! [Wed May 7 00:16:31 2003] [error] mod_ssl: Init: (Scum.kinkon:80) Ops, no RSA or DSA server certificate found?! [Wed May 7 00:16:31 2003] [error] mod_ssl: Init: (Scum.kinkon:80) You have to perform a *full* server restart when you added or removed a certificate and/or key file Now, I haven't changed anything on it for a very long time, so the last mesg seemed a bit odd. I tarred all of /var/log up and copied it off the system, to have it unaffected by any of the next things I'd try. So I tried to restart apache, and ssl_engine_log said: [warn] Init: (Scum.kinkon:80) You configured HTTPS(443) on the standard HTTP(80) port! This is not good. *I* haven't changed that, so I'm unsure of what to make of it. I'd be thankful for any ideas. The hardware is a recycled Compaq, has little RAM; 64MB, and I wouldn't be much surprised if the machine is starting to go bad. OTOH my *first* reaction was that it might've gooten cracked... There was a thread about logrotate recently. And since the time of death is when logrotate is run (IINM), I'm thinking that *that* might've played a part? New nvidia drivers on 8.2 > 6000 FPS in glxgears

This was just such a huge improvement that I felt I should share. With 8.1 and recent nvidia drivers I was in the neighborhood of 3000-3600 FPS according to glxgears. Now: jlemay@gambit:~> glxgears 28045 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5609.000 FPS 29189 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5837.800 FPS 30102 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6020.400 FPS 30028 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6005.600 FPS 30102 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6020.400 FPS 30097 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6019.400 FPS 30097 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6019.400 FPS 30107 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6021.400 FPS This with a Ti4200 MX with 128MB. ut2003 still looks good, but the real improvement is in Racer - smooth and about 130 FPS. Epiphany/Bluefish

Updated/new on www.usr-local-bin.org today: * Epiphany - Updated to version 0.6.0 - Lots of toolbar improvements * Bluefish - Version 0.9 - GTK2 version - GNOME2 menu entry There's been a slight delay in my Mozilla 1.4b packages - typo in the .spec file ;) They should be ready on Monday when I'm back in the office, and then I'll also do new Galeon & Epiphany packages based on it. I'm hoping to also get Evolution 1.3.3 packages done next week, I've been using it, source built, since 1.3.2, and I reckon it's ok to do packages, watch the list for an announcement. 8.2 problem:Xserver crash

I have been trying since April 27 (here and on the gatos list) to find out how to load the ati driver from gatos.sf.net so that I can use my computer in GUI mode with Suse 8.2 and my ATI All in Wonder Card. So far I have been told: 'Make sure you use "ati" driver for your card, not firegl.' and 'Try editing /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config. You need to be root to do this. But no clear and explicit instructions. I'm stuck. I can't un update back to 8.1. A clean install will not solve the problem and I don't want to have to buy a new graphics card just because I updated my system. Does anyone on this list know how to properly load a driver for a graphics card? If you do would you please tell me! If not can someone point me to someone or something that can tell me?
