I just had my device / path icons on the left side of my screen (SuSE 8.2) disappear. I rebooted the system and they came back, but I'm wondering what made them vanish. Does anyone have an ide? What about bringing them back without having to reboot?

don't need to reboot, just move one of them and they all will show up again.. if they all disappear, a few seconds wait will have them show up again. It's really annoying , and I haven't' been able to convince it yet that I want them where I want them ( right side of the screen ) There is an item called "arrange icons" on the right click desktop menu. I've attempted the "sort icons" which used to work in 8.o and maybe before that .. but it doesn't seem to "stick" this time around, although it WILL let some stay permanently where I put them.. only a few tho. Hope this give some useful info -- j Afterthought : Lead Me Not Into Temptation ... I can find it all by myself ...

Did you try restarting KDE without a reboot? Don't know why it would happen, though ... -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB Tel: +44 161 834 7961 Fax: +44 161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk

No, I didn't. Actually, I'm not sure how to do that without a reboot.

Just log out to kdm (or whatever login manager you're using, kdm I believe if you have a standard install) and back in again. That restarts kde. You can go a stage further and restart the X server if you find that doesn't work, it should be one of the drop-down options on the login screen. Often all that's needed. logout and log back in again... or else do a 'Ctrl' 'Alt' and 'Backspace' triple key combo to restart the X-server (this will shut down KDE and if you've got autologin enabled, then you should find KDE starting back up again or else, if not, you will be at the KDM login manager)

yeah, even weirder is why they want to move around. IIRC there was a similar situation in an older version of Suse, tho for my life I don't remember precisely which version. At that time the solution /workaround was to put the things where you wanted them and logout , telling the system to "save the session" when you log back in, the safer course is to uncheck that option. after all, if some naughty misbehaving program forces you to leave the desktop , or it leaves you. it wouldn't do you much good to keep logging back into that session, now , would it? -- j Afterthought : Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turndown the volume on the radio?
