apt-get updates

I ran apt-get update and the output shows this for example: Get:1402 ftp://ftp.gwdg.de SuSE/9.0-i386/base zope-doc 2.6.1-155 [5584kB] But when I run rpm -qa | grep zope-doc I get this: zope-doc-2.6.1-132 Have I been updated? Is there something else I need to do to finish the update? Thanks Jerome

Then go into the kernel directory (/usr/src/kernel...) check if everything seems reasonable doing make menuconfig (you may need extra -devel packages and some other stuff) get out if you're satisfied with the original SUSE .config This is a rough idea of what you'll have to do to compile a new kernel: make clean dep clean bzImage modules modules_install | grep 'rror' cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.18 /sbin/lilo /sbin/mk_initrd -k vmlinuz -i initrd /sbin/lilo Beware this is not exactly what you'll have to do... it depends if you're running lilo or grub. You'll have to change the System.map-version to an appropriate name. You may not need an initrd. You may want to edit lilo or grub menu to have a copy of your old kernel and maybe rename vmlinuz to something else... It would be better you know exactly what you're doing reading one of the tons of howto on how to compile your own kernel and configure lilo or grub. It is not difficult, few precautions will let you start over and over in a safe way if you make some mistake of configuration. Even if you'll do some mistakes and you won't be able to boot from your box most of the times your data will still be there and you should be able to resurrect your whole system but this will be far more complicated than just know how grub or lilo work and take some precautions. There should be a chapter on lilo and kernel compilation on SUSE's manuals too. Once you've compiled your kernel with your compiler you'll have to run again nvidia installer. It is not as difficult as it seems but some mistakes can put you into panic mode. Most of the time everything is still there and you can restart a fully working system... but better you read carefully a good howto on how to compile a kernel and how to configure lilo or grub. > If you know what you are doing and want to override this > check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH. How do I sotp K3b from launching when incerting blank cdrom?

I just made a coaster for no reason. I was burining a cd with xcdroast which I like very much when K3b started and ejected the disk I was writting. This, of course, made a coaster 8^(. Will not boot to init 5

Now when I resart my computer I get a kernal panic in Linux but not in safe-settings. When I go to init 5 from this and go to YaST2 bootlloader configuration I show no user/sbin/grub so I went to install new grub and it shows nothing if i run a search for grub. If I run a search for lilo it is installed. What do I need to do to get grub back. CD-RW problem

Hey there! In 8.2 I had my CD-RW and CD working fine. I installed (fresh) 9 and they still worked....even better. I ran KB3 once and since then my CD-RW won't mount. When I drop a CD in it, it reads for a couple seconds then spits it back out and the drawer stays out. When I try to mount it, the drawer pops in and out several times then I get a message saying....no medium found. I have a desktop icon that mounts /dev/cdrecorder /mnt/cdrecorder. I looked under yast2 and the CD drives and found it says /dev/sr0 linked to /dev/cdrecorder. So, I switched around my desktop icon to /dev/sr0 and mounted it to the same spot. Nothing. I have both devices, /sr0 and /cdrecorder, in my fstab. Everything looks fine there....but here it is. /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/sr0 /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 I've tried commenting them out also. Nada. Any thoughts? Maybe my CD-RW is broke...which would be nice. Tom

KsCD starts when I insert audio CD... How do I turn the damned thing off????

I want control of this box... KsCD is driving me nuts... I want to work with an audio cd not play the damned thing but KsCD automagically starts when I insert an audio CD and I can't find anywhere to tell it not to start... And another thing... when I do put an audio CD in and this damned thing starts up... all my icons get messed around with yet again... instead of being neatly arranged down the left hand side they suddenly sort themselves across the screen...

wireless weirdness

Hi all, My wireless connection keeps falling apart. Up, down, up, down, ad infinitum, no discernable pattern. The signal is fine according to Kwifimanager(and it was stable under windows). I am using SuSE 9.0, a Linksys WPC11 v.3 wireless card and a Linksys router. Anyone using F-prot with amavis and postfix?
