I downloaded OOo latest version and uninstalled the SuSE rpm. Has anyone used it with the quickstarter? I can't find anything usesful about this on the OOo site. Thanks, Steve. 8.2 with OOo-rc4

Can Linux be a Windows Log server?

I know how to setup a UNIX/Linux log server and have the other boxes forward their logs to it. Can Windows boxes be setup to forward their logs to a Linux box? Does Windows even have the concept of configurable logging? Does my question even make sense? Greg -- Greg Freemyer

Syslog

Reinstalled Suse 8.2 three times. Syslog Services fail to load properly each time. Rebooted several times and I get the same thing. Is this a problem with the cd? using CPIO to backup from the output of a file

Hello, I have two seperate directories I wish to backup on the linux system /home and /usr. I don't seem to be able to find a way to enter the correct path in the crontab so I decided to create a script which takes the contents of /home and inputs it into a file, then append the file with the input of the /usr directory. What I now need to know is how can I get the cpio command to acknowledge this log file and backup all the filenames entered in there??? Somebody please help. Cheers Damian Buckley

hi, i have added a job into root's crontab. looks does not running at 9am daily. i had force to run via webmin and problems. any idea how to fix it? the cron job added by "crontab -e" and "crontab -l" displays it. thx

Quicktime

Hello list, Is it at all possible to run Quicktime under SuSE Linux? I am running SuSE v8.0 Pro. I checked Apple.com and there does not appear to be a download for Linux, just Mac/Windoze. Is there an application available for Linux which can handle Quicktime files? Thanks! Jesse

[SLE] problems with SBC DSL Internet

I'm a linux newbie, and I've just signed up for SBC DSL Internet Access, and I'm having a world of trouble getting it to work with Linux. After speaking with the tech support idiots (they told me Linux doesn't support DSL), I've spent quite a bit of time trolling the internet for answers. I'm running Suse 8.2, I have a Speedstream DSL modem that SBC gave me, connected via Ethernet. I installed Roaring Penguin's RP-PPPOE but it still won't recognize the modem and the connection won't work. Does anyone use SBC or a similar service that can help me out getting it up and running? It already works on my windows computer, so I don't need to sign up with them, just get linux to recognize the connection. Also, as far as the Ethernet settings, should DHCP be turned on for this, or should I use a static IP address? Thanks, Casey Petersen

root login disabled for KDM (KDE 1.4.1)

Environment: 8.2 Suse Professional i386 (athlon kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-100 ) KDE 3.1.4 from SuSE supplementary directory KDM RPM: kdebase3-kdm-3.1.4-34 /etc/passwd entry for root root:x:0:0:Konqi:/root:/bin/bash The name Konqi as root was added with a PNG file for KDM to display, cute little 64x64 pixel 3D dragon that he is. I have remote login and shutdown disabled via "Control Center->System Administration->Login Manager". System UID set to Below 0 and Above 65000. "unhidden with every hidden but root (before I had Below 500 and had "Selected only" which included "root"). Unable to login to root via KDM. Message is "root logins are not allowed". I did no editing explicitly of these files. There is a /etc/pam.d/xdm but not a /etc/pam.d/kdm "login root" from command line fails and goes away before an error can be detected. "su - root" works.
