iTunes inside of VMWare inside of Windows

I have recieved numerous e-mails about this issue and I thought I would make it known to any and all interested parties since I am the proclaimed expert of Windows inside of VMWare. Yes, the new iTunes can be run inside of Windows inside of VMWare but, (yes you knew a but was coming) You cannot run visualizations because VMWare drivers do not support OpenGL, Do not allocate less than 256mb of RAM for the guest OS, I highly reccomend upgrading to VMWare 4.0.5 since memory management was greatly improved in that version. If you wish to use it inside of VMWare 4.0.0 or below, YOU CANNOT BE DOING ANYTHING IN LINUX. The Apple Music Store works, you can access the store and download and do what you want. If you wish to make custom CD's on an internal CD-RW you are out of luck I think, I have to do some more testing with mine, but upon inital testing it didnt work. but with External burners it works fine, unload the USB mass storage Modules in Linux before you can mount the external burner in the guest OS. Hi, The following is a workaround to a bug in the OpenPBS /etc/init.d scripts in SuSE 8.2. The bug was reported via the SuSE feedback. If OpenPBS is installed: # rpm -qa|grep OpenPBS OpenPBS-2.3.16-323 OpenPBS-clients-2.3.16-323 OpenPBS-devel-2.3.16-323 OpenPBS-mom-2.3.16-323 OpenPBS-scheduler-2.3.16-323 OpenPBS-server-2.3.16-323 then it cannot be enabled neither via YaST2 or chkconfig: # chkconfig pbs_server on insserv: Service pbsserv has to be enabled for service pbsserv insserv: Service inetd has to be enabled for service pbsserv insserv: exiting now! /sbin/insserv failed, exit code 1 A workaround is to remove the service $netdaemons from the Required-Start field of pbs_mom, pbs_sched, and pbs_server (in /etc/init.d) and the service pbsserv from the Required-Start field of pbs_server. The corrected lines are: /etc/init.d/pbs_mom: # Required-Start: $network pbsserv $remote_fs /etc/init.d/pbs_sched: # Required-Start: $network pbsserv $remote_fs /etc/init.d/pbs_server: # Required-Start: $network $remote_fs $netdaemons can be removed since OpenPBS does not use (IMHO) neither portmap nor inetd (see /etc/insserv.conf). -- A.M.

gnome-games broken in 9.0?

My beloved sol and freecell both fail in my new suse 9.0 installation with lots of whining about gdk-pixbuf, eg: (sol:14799): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: file gdk-pixbuf.c: line 309 (gdk_pixbuf_get_n_channels): assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed ) Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks, Henry Harpening

9.0 Pro Upgrade Q

Wondering if its necessary to have 8.2 Pro installed before attempting the 9.0 Pro Upgrade? I have the 9.0 Upgrade on order however I have since built a new machine with a virgin drive waiting patiently for 9.0. Must I go through the hassle of installing 8.2 Pro first and then upgrading or can I go straight to 9.0, possibly only asking for a CD or 2 from the 8.2 distro? Cheers! K. Login screen gone after apt upgrade

Greetings, A few days ago I did an upgrade of installed files using 'apt-get upgrade', as a result of this action my login screen (the graphical interface where you put the username and pass when you try to load SuSE) is gone. SuSE tries to load it and my whole screen blinks for about 3-4 times, then it gives up and shows me a console screen. I can login to SuSE using the console and after this executing the 'startx' to load KDE, everything else if working fine. This is not a big problem but I surely would like to have the usual/normal login screen back. Someone else out there with this issue? Any ideas, suggestions, comments? If somebody have a link with info leading to the solution of this problem I would really appreciate the help! Tiscali Broadband

KDE / nautilus gone wild!

I recently upgraded from 8.1 to 8.2 on my Dell Inspiron 8100. I have been using KDE exclusively for my desktop. Things going pretty well until yesterday. as I went to shutdown the laptop I noticed that my desktop had change dramatically. Background picture was gone, most or the desktop ikons were gone. Remaining ikons seemd to have a Gnome look to them. Next time I rebooted it took a long time to bring up the KDE desktop and when it came up nautilus began launching repeatedly with no end in sight. Had to log out to get it to stop. This continues to happen every time I boot up with KDE, but not with Gnome or WindowMaker. Any ideas? Thanks, Duane Wilson

"NTLDR is missing"

Help! I went to boot up my SuSE 8.2 system this evening and the process stopped with a table listing the PCI devices followed by: NTLDR is missing Press any key to continue This is an 1.4 Mhz Athlon with 750 mb of RAM and two RAID 1 (mirror) arrays on a 3Ware Escalade controller. /, /boot, & /opt are on separate partitions on the first array and /home is by itself on the second array (along with swap). All the partitions are Reiser FS Grub is the boot loader installed. During the boot process both RAID arrays are recognized and when I boot the rescue system I can mount any of the partitions without problem. The system has operated without a major problem since I first set it up when 8.2 was released, and that was a fresh install. No other OS has ever been on it so this error message is especially unnerving as it appears from my research it's a MS error message. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to what I need to do to fix the problem. (I'm going to do a clean install of 9.0, but it won't arrive until next week.) Epson as a supported printer under 9.0?

Hi, Just about to order my set of the 9.0 CD's and am wondering if my Epson printer is supported by generic modules/drivers. I have recently contacted the Epson support desk locally and they do not support linux :( The printer is an Epson Stylus 800+. TIA

SuSE 9.0 DVD Install Trbls?

Last time round (8.2 Pro) I was unable to install off of the combo/DVD drive. Has this been fixed in the installer and if not, do the CD's contain the same information as the double sided DVD? Home partition.

Hi All Before I update my 8.2 box to 9.0 I want to put my Home directory to a separate partition. Is it possible to create this partition by using Yast? When I start the partition part it says don't use it on a drive what is in use. I'm confused. Tried to find info on Google but it wasn't to much help. I'm the sales guy at my company and the IT guy (ya, it's a long story) and a subscriber to this list for almost 2 years....and I still label myself as a newbie. Anyway, Currently everything we do comes from our website and I want to advertise my company in a magazine, but I'm not sure what magazine all you sys admins look at or read. My question is: What magazines do you read or look at that are related to your work? I'm looking at mags like Sys Admin, PC World, PC Mag, etc... Just let me know what you read on a monthly basis. Using gdm instead of kdm in SuSE 9.0

Has anyone tried using gdm instead of kdm in SuSE 9.0? I edited /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and set the DisplayManager setting to gdm from kdm. When I rebooted and tried logging in, I got an error (copies from my syslog) Oct 25 08:59:02 bclaptop gconfd (brian-4370): Failed to load source "xml:readonly:/etc/opt/gnome/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory": Failed: Could not make directory `/etc/opt/gnome/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory': Permission denied I got that error when trying to login to my user account. However, I was able to login without error as root. So it is a permission error I believe. SuSE kernel k_athlon 2.4.20-100 incompatible with aic7xxx (very old issue)

Hello! I have an Adaptec Utra160 SCSI card and the system freezes when it loads the aic7xxx module (both old and new versions). The issue is described in the following threads: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2002-Oct/3179.html http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2002-Oct/3600.html http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Apr/1942.html (the one I reycled to write this mail) Possible personal solutions to be able to use the system: - compile my own kernel (not wished because I am not expert) - remove the aic7xxx module from the kernel system config and run mkinitrd and start the module manually (modprobe) (not wished either because only root can do it) Other facts: - It worked with the original 8.2 kernel but not with k_athlon 2.4.20-86 or k_athlon 2.4.20-100. - My root partition is on an IDE drive. - Starting the module aic7xxx at boot time through boot.local will also fail. Starting the module manually once the whole OS is up and running works just fine. I would really appreciate to receive some feedback from someone at SuSE because this issue has been lasting for a very long time. I would like to contribute a patch but searching for an issue in the kernel source might not be the easiest entry in the open source world. Thank you for your time! Patrick

Write permissions

System-wide Spam Filter w/Web Frontend & Bayesian?

Helo all, For the last year at least, I've been using bogofilter as a bayesian spam filter for my personal account. It has worked fine and I am perfectly happy with it. The prolem is that it is hard for people who are unfamiliar with the command line to setup and use (people like my mother, sisters, some friends who have accounts on my machine. etc.). So, I'm in quest of a system-wide spam filter which will integrate as a sendmail milter, has (good) baysian capabilities and a web front-end for training and using the system. 9.0 Pro Upgrade has arrived

Just received 9.0 Pro Upgrade via UPS here in Minne-snow-ta. The CD/DVD package does not indicate Upgrade at all, just 9.0 Pro, for those wondering if the Pro full or upgrade is any different. Also the DVD is doublesided. Side A is binaries, etc and Side B is all sources. I'll be busy this weekend. Stan

I found the answer in the "envelope orientation" tab in the printer setup. (Note to list: I sent this message privately to Keith and attached a screen shot of the "envelope orientation" tab, but the suse server would not allow me to send that image to the list. So I'm copying the message here without the screen shot.) I'm using an HP Laser5 that feeds envelopes from the left side of the paper bin. You would think that I should press the 4th button to feed the envelope in from the left side. But if I do that the envelope comes out with nothing on it. I discovered through trial and error that I need to press the 6th button (the one indicating that the envelope is being fed in from the right side of the paper tray). Even though it is feeding from the left I have to use the "feed from right" button to print on the envelope. Why it is this way I do not know. But it works. So I'd suggest trying those 6 buttons and I think you'll find that one you would not expect to work does print the envelope correctly. Hope that helps with part of your problem. Gil

I am running SuSE 8.1 Prof. I just installed the Sun Java1.4.2-02 and installed after that Mozilla1.5 which I downloaded from the mozilla.org website. It works fine, and I can open Mozilla1.5 and browse the web. When I click on an URL in Evolution1.2.4 it opens Mozilla and shows the requested page. However it opens Mozilla1.3 when Mozilla 1.5 is not running. When I already have Mozilla 1.5 running, it opens a new window of Mozilla1.5 instead of 1.3. BIG problem with etc/opt/gnome2/gdm/

I just did an update with synaptic. Now my etc/gnome2/gdm/ directory has a gdm.conf file and a gdm.conf.rpmsave file. I just rebooted the machine (because things were slow and locking up) and gdm wouldn't boot. I got the error ... machine login: gdm_config_parse: Can't find the gdm grop (nobody). Aborting! I had to ctrl+alt+f2 and login to KDE. What did I do wrong and how do I fix it. Thanks, -=Thinker

Nvidia FX 5900 Ultra

Does anyone know if SuSE-9.0 has a Xserver for the video card Nvidia FX 5900 Ultra? I'm currently running 8.2, but it's crippled: 1) To see the system boot, you have to disable graphical logins and 2) you cannot use OpenGL. Nvidia does have a linux driver for the FX 5900 Ultra, but attempts to install it (via the nvidia installer) results in a failed compilation when it attempts to compile the appropriate module. Strange 9.0 issues.

I am having 3 issues with SuSE 9.0 on my Sony PCG-V505BX Laptop. 1.) When I take out the ethernet cable starting new processes is really slowwwwwwww. I thought it was the power cable effecting acpi. Though it is definantly the net cable. Only way to fix this is rebooting without the netcable connected. 2.) When I take out the power cable, compile and app or run any application that takes allot of processor power my sound gets very choppy sounding. 3.) When I try to mount my memory stick it wont mount correctly. Maybe some of this will help. Here is the error: "mount sda mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified". I had same issue with SuSE 8.2 with sda. That is about all the issues I have so far. I will attach the innitab for issue 3. Please help me if you can. Hi all, I got fixed IP for my ADSL since last week. But now I am getting lots of martian messages sort of: martian source xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx from 127.0.0.1, on dev ppp0, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is my public IP, the IP address in the interface ppp0. I got an ADSL/Ethernet modem in ppp0 with the public fixed IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx connected to my host by means of eth0 0.0.0.1/255.255.255.0 Also I have another ethernet interface eth1 192.168.0.254/255.255.255.0 to connect to my internal home network. [SLE] ISP Problem

Hello SuSE folk. I can connect to my ISP using kinternet (pppd) just fine, and stay connected. Problem is that I cannot connect to the web, use e-mail, ftp, nothing. Problems started after an apt-get upgrade. Lots of packages so I don't know which one to blame. I checked every conceivable configuration file in ppp that I could think of. I then reinstalled kinternet from the SuSE CD. No change. This ISP uses PAP-secrets.Right clicking on the kinternet icon,"check connection", shows the dynamic addresses for the ISP and my computer but does not come up with a server name. Only one strange thing that I have found is in the ppp/peers/resolv.conf file. It displays some strange address (206.165.75.20) Where, if I remember correctly should be the DNS server numbers of my ISP. I change it to that DNS and as soon as I connect it reverts to the 206 etc. number.I don't remember or know if it is supposed to do that or not and have no idea what that address is. Checking that number in Windoze says it is unknown. What is it that allows web-browsing, e-mail collection etc. after the connection is established? Need help here; I have run out of ideas. printing question

I'm having problems printing text files (source code, email, etc) If I have a multi-page text file and print it using KWrite or Kate, which I use to create the file, I loose data where the top and bottom margins are. It acts like the page-setup is wrong. If I open the same text file using Mozilla browser of Open Office, it prints fine, no loss of data. What's wrong? Is there something in the KWrite or Kate configuration that I need to address? I can't find anything concerning the printed page! please help! Matt

printing confusion

please help, i'm having problems printing. I'm using Suse 8.1 and a hpdeskjet648c. I've configured it through Yast and KDE Control Panel. It prints but I loose data in the margins. For example... Using KWrite to create a text file. If the file is under one printed page in length it prints fine with a nice 1/2 inch margin at the top. Once the page gets larger than one printed page the margins get crazy. I loose the top of the first page and parts of subsequent pages right where the margins are. I've played with this quite a bit. Changed paper size to US Letter (which I use) been in and out of Yast and the Control Panel. So many parts of Suse are easy to use but printing has been a long running problem for me. I've tried three different HP printers and none of them printed problem free. What am I doing wrong!! Frustrated in Baltimore, Matt

I bought the mobile and the cable in HK, the cable was not by Siemens. The cable came with software drivers for Windows. The driver name was something like "USB2Serial driver". That let me think that the connection is not seen as a USB connection but as an RS232 connection. Siemens is a German company as SuSE, maybe there are some hopes you could have some help from them or stimulate them to have some kind of partnership with SuSE to develop drivers and soft for Linux. Actually the Windows software didn't support a lot of features of the phone so there are chances a joint venture between SuSE and Siemens may come out with a much better product. BTW Siemens phones have a really nice address book even on entry level models... nVIDIA Driver Problem

SuSE8.1/nVIDIA GeForce2 Pro/4496 Drivers for SuSE8.1 This has been a reoccurring problem, but up to now it hasn't been important enough to solve. The stock SuSE drivers have been sufficient fro using OpenGL. Now, however, I have some new modeling software that requires later nVIDIA drivers. I downloaded and installed, following the SuSE specific directions, the 4496 drivers - both kernel and GLX. The first time that I attempted to open X the screen went dark and it was necessary to reboot the system to recover. According to the window boot messages it was still loading the nv module. I did insmod nvidia.o and got Xwindows to open. However, when I attempt to run gears I get error messages: GLUT fatal error in gears: OpenGL extension not supported by display: :0.0 Now, I know that this sort of problem has cropped up a lot of late, but I can't seem to find any solutions that work for my system. I restored the system by removing the 4496 files and reinstalling the SuSE stock distribution. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Stephen P. Hi all, I have just installed SuSE 8.2 and realized that every time I login kde, the font size is differ from previous login. Sometimes a single character is as big as the whole screen, sometimes is smaller than recognizable. But the same problem does not occur within gnome session. Any advice? Thanks

I looked at "/etc/services" to see what each port mean, but I didn't know what was the purpose of those services and which application opened them. I am just wondering whether they should be open on a typical home computer. If so, which application uses them? Another question I have is, does CUPSD need to be run to be able to just print documents. The machine is NOT a print server. The last question: I ran SAINT 3.4 (old version) and it has shown me a buffer overflow vulnerability with CUPS. I am not sure if this is true. 9.0 Install Problem - DPT SCSI Controller

9.0 arrived today, but no go on the install... I have a DPT PM3865 SCSI controller (uses the dpt_i2o kernel module) with two SCSI drives attached, sda and sdb. No hardware RAID is configured. The 9.0 installer sees three drives attached (!) sda, sdb and sdc, with sda and sdb being identical versions of the same physical drive. After installation, a boot from the hard disk results in a Grub error. This same machine has successfully run 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 with the same hardware in the same configuration. The machine also dual boots Windows 2000 (on sda) and SuSE (on sdb). This is not a termination or termpwr issue I am sure. So, are there any parms I can pass to the dpt_i2o kernel module to correct this behavior? I've tried three installs, regular, no apic and safe, all with the same results. FYI I just reinstalled 8.1 to get Grub back and be able to boot W2K. Thanks! Mark L. There is a postfix option for that will catch all email that is sent to your domain that doesn't belong to a know user, so after I removed an account that is getting bombarded with spam it now goes to my catchall box. I just need to be able to reject a certain address but allow my catchall to keep working. If you want to reject all mail for one email address then simply remove that account (if that is the delivered or To: address). If it is the From: address, then you can configure it in the access file (man pages...) As for a catchall box, never heard of such a thing.

Situation: dual boot system with multiple hot swappable drives. Drive sda holds win98 and the mbr which offers up the lilo boot screen. Drive sdb holds SuSE7.1 With sda out of the circuit, SuSE won't boot. I want to remove sda (mechanically failing) and still boot from sdb. However, I don't seem to be able to do this. I know that there has been a thread going on this but to be truthful I can't understand it. YaST is not offering me any obvious help either. I know what I want to do, and that is tell lilo to write the boot loader to sdb and the system to boot off sdb, but I don't see how to get lilo do this. Man LILO is helping me either. The choice of writing lilo to the installed drive at time if installation is what I need so that upon removal of sda I can simply boot from what is now sdb. Dear All, Thanks for reading my first ever email to this list. I am new to fooling with the kernel, done a tiny bit of reading on it, but only scratched surface, got myself in a jam, and looking for some advice. Thanks very much. I am running a Compaq Proliant 1850, dual P3-600's, 1gb RAM, RAID 1 18gb drives, all latest updates to hardware, running SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional, fresh normal install, (which will be our SMTP server once done). I didnt see in the boot log that it was detecting both processors, so I fired-up YaST and went to install the SMP kernel, which it prompted me that I must be insane to try to do such a thing since it took care of this on its own, so I stopped, went back, did some more reading, posted to forums at http://www.itrc.hp.com/ which are very good, didnt come up with much, so said what the heck, I'll give it a shot, went back to YaST, this time clicked past the kernel warning, all went well, rebooted, and it cant find depencies. I actually have two (ie: the second is our web server) of these identical machines, the second is running fine, as I didnt touch it. I am now booted to "failsafe" & trying to get back to where I can try to correct this, but hitting blocks, thus my posting here. In failsafe, in YaST, trying to load default kernel, neither the floppy nor the CDROM seem to be there and I cant figure out how to access them. Any advice on how to use the CDROM or floppy in failsafe would be great, for this issue, and for future knowledge. Second, what is my course of action: is installing the default kernel what I want to do now anyway? Do I want to try to solve the depencies of the SMP kernel? OR some other course of action entirely? I guess perhaps I ought to start back at the start and wonder why the installer didnt recognize the second processor in the first place. I have tried booting to "rescue" but it hangs once it starts probing hardware. Since the machine is not yet in production, I could just pave over it fresh, but I'd rather not, and I'd like to learn the kernel/system/OS resurrection process/procedures. I've been busy building packages for 9.0, and after having had loads of problems because of glib and glib2 both being in the same prefix as gnome on 9.0, I'm now pretty confident I'll be replacing the 8.2 packages on the site with the 9.0 ones on Monday. That means you have four days to make sure you're up to date, or to use APT archive after that. Transition from mailbox to maildir

Hi all, I am planning to move away from qpopper (which is POP3 only) to something like Courier IMAPD on my system. Mine is not a big production system, anyway I have at least ten users with emails on their mailbox. Courier (and all others IMAPD) usually need maildirs, not mailboxes. My question is: How could I safely move from mailbox to maildir, without losing old emails? Any comment and advice is strongly needed:D TIA, Praise

Hi: Has anybody been able to get the Netgear II PCI wireless card to work with SuSE 8.2? Mine says it will use the prism2_plx driver, but it will not connect. Is this a windows-only card? I did contact already the author. He did not have any idea if a driver already exists for this. Siemens it is kind of listening to customers, I always received email back from them related with my problems. It is good idea to email them. Another point: if I would use just the serial cable. It won't be a bad idea if we both write to Siemens to motivate them to support more Linux and suggest a partnership with SuSE... Currently it is last of my thought... but if you're in a hurry I'll do further search... The problems seems to be that RedHat has a different procps version 2.0.11 than SuSE's version: procps version 3.1.6 I was thinking that RedHat maybe have their own top like features. Even the help 'h' function shows different screens and indicator names for RedHat 9 and SuSE 8.2. My question was: what are these indicators in RedHat and why they are not present in SuSE ? Just curious. I bought the mobile and the cable in HK, the cable was not by Siemens. The cable came with software drivers for Windows. The driver name was something like "USB2Serial driver". That let me think that the connection is not seen as a USB connection but as an RS232 connection. Siemens is a German company as SuSE, maybe there are some hopes you could have some help from them or stimulate them to have some kind of partnership with SuSE to develop drivers and soft for Linux. Actually the Windows software didn't support a lot of features of the phone so there are chances a joint venture between SuSE and Siemens may come out with a much better product. BTW Siemens phones have a really nice address book even on entry level models... Gaim Segfaulting

I'm running SuSE 7.2 (old, I know, but heard too many nightmares about the 8.0 release, upgrading to 8.3 soon). Installed Gaim last night, in the process had to upgrade pkg-config, glib, gtk, adk, and pango. All were upgraded to at least the minimum release to run Gaim. Tried to run Gaim and it's segfaulting, I have a feeling it's library related. Any ideas what other dependencies I'm may need to upgrade? Thanks Laine

Hi, I just had a look under one RedHat box: verison 9 Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike) and run top. There are some differences in top report parameters than in SuSE 8.2 - Anyone any idea why this is like this ? 15:58:48 up 18 min, 5 users, load average: 0.56, 0.32, 0.29 68 processes: 64 sleeping, 3 running, 1 zombie, 0 stopped CPU states: 13.6% user 3.1% system 0.0% nice 0.0% iowait 83.1% idle Mem: 513856k av, 506992k used, 6864k free, 0k shrd, 10436k buff 401964k actv, 27136k in_d, 10632k in_c Swap: 771112k av, 5112k used, 766000k free 346460k cached in_d, in_c !? Hi, I have a Siemens M55 GSM and Im trying to sync with my SuSE 8.2 x86. Im using scmxx 0.6.3.5 by hendrik sattler <post(a)hendrik-sattler.de> I have a Siemens USB cable. These are the messages from system when I plugin and plugout my phone. usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x67b/0x2303) is not claimed by any active driver. usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:1d.0-1 address 2 hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.0-1, assigned address 3 usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x67b/0x2303) is not claimed by any active driver. I have no idea what device is attached by SuSE for my device ? This cable is a USB cable. Anyone tried to sync a Siemens M55 with scmxx 0.6.3.5 ? Many thanks, stefan

building RPMs

I have downloaded the ftp.suse.com segment .../i386/8.2/suse/ rpm packages into a directory structure of suse/ i586 i686 .... It's the same as the ftp tree on the server. I am trying to build a package and I get the following results: build -rpms /srv/ftp/suse --clean --verify ... preinstalling bash... can not find bash.rpm... exit. It managed to find everything else in this tree so far (fillup.rpm was one, cyrus-sasl.rpm was another). I checked and there is a /srv/ftp/suse/i586/bash-2.05b-105.i586.rpm file on the directory tree. How do I "explain" that this is the file it's supposed to be using.... ?

Mozilla mail problem

I've sent this message to the mozilla mail/news group, but haven't gotten any useful replies. Anyone here run into this? I've had this problem a couple times. Sometimes, Mozilla seems to trash the mail files where incoming mail is filtered too. This morning it happened to 4 mail files, all under the Inbox.sbd directory. The symptoms are: - Mail messages to be placed in a file by the filter program are not moved. Instead a popup message stating it cannot be moved appears, and suggests to check disk space and write permissions. - Disk space and write permissions are fine. - The file(s) the program failed to write to is ALWAYS 4294967295 bytes (huge). I have 2 questions. 1. Can I prevent this? 2. Can I recover the data from the files? They seem too big to process. I certainly can't edit them. I am running: - SuSE Linux 6.3 - Mozilla Mozilla 1.4b Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030514 I can't run a newer version of Mozilla due to my glibc version. I can't build a newer glibc because gcc isn't current. trying to access a Mandrake Box

I am currently using SuSE 8.2 (ftp version). I have Mandrake 9.0(MDK) installed on one box and Windows 2000 Professional (W2K)on another. The ultimate goal is to use the SuSE 8.2 box for work and such until SuSE 9.0 gets here. When the new SuSE gets here, I would like to have the MDK box clean and available. In order to do that, I need to copy my home directory from the MDK box to both the SuSE 8.2 box (for use of files) and more importantly to the W2K box (since it is the only machine with a working CD Burner). screensaver stops working

Hi List, This is a P-III 950 MHz, 640 MB RAM system running SuSE 8.2 stock and patchd with the latest upgrade packages. I run 16 desktops on kde with all of them having at least one or two application windows open, vmware and a win98 guest being one of them. Occasionally I experience the lack of screensaver action. For no apparent reason the screensaver stops kicking in after its prescribed 5 minutes. When I restart kde everything is fine ... for a couple of days until the problem reappears. Has anybody else seen this behavior? Where should I start to probe and trouble shoot? Thanks for any pointers, ALex.

cyrus + squirrelmail

I've gotten confused and have really buggered up my directories.... I was trying to configure squirrelmail to use cyrus for the imap server. It seems that it gets very confused about the folders, their names, and where they might be located. Generally, everything ends up as a subdirectory (or folder) of INBOX which is not what I expected to see. Can anyone point me in a general direction?

Hello All, I am real new to this Linux stuff. I just bought Suse Ver 8.2. I had not problem installing it on my new machine. I have 4 things i can't figure out. Maybe someone can help me out.. #1 - I have an 3Com Gigabit Lan card Built into my motherboard. It didn't recognize it when installed Suse 8.2. So i went to look at my motherboard Manufacturer (Asus). They had a Linux Driver for the Lan card so i download and burned it on a CD. I followed the instructions that came with the drivers but it didn't work when i tried installing it. I need to know the correct way of installing the Lan card driver. #2 - This is Similar to #1. Instead of Lan drivers it is Video Drivers. I have a GForce 4 5600 256. I downloaded the linux drivers from Nvida's website. Followed the instructions and again it didn't seem to work. #3 - I have 2 PC's. 1 with Windows 2000 and this one with Suse 8.2. I also have Cable Modem. I have the Windows 2000 Machine Connected to a Cable/Dsl Router. I need to know if i can network these 2 machines together. Also i need Suse to recognize the router and Cable Modem. #4 - I play Sony's Everquest. I am having real problems trying to install it on Suse machine. I configured the Wine. When i try to install it, it stops at the install shield. I don't know what version of Wine i have. I looked on the web to find out that i have to pay for the latest version of wine so that Everquest will run. Like i said i am a Newbie when it comes to Linux. Been a Dos/Windows user until now. f i can get this to work i would change my other machine also and stick with Suse. But my lack of knowledge may frustrate me to just go back to windows. If anyone have any good idea's or step by step instructions for a beginner like me it will be well appreciated. Shipping dates.

Release after release, the webmaster posts a shipping date that is KNOWN to NOT be attainable!! As much of a SUSE supporter as I am, this not only irritates me, it fouls up my schedule as I attempt to setup dates to upgrade clients. Not to mention, that I have them preorder product and they get irritated when it doesn't ship timely!! The practice of posting a shipping date that is KNOWN to not be correct MUST stop. Mozilla Freezes

I have been having problems with Mozilla 1.5, it was the same with 1.4, and SuSE 8.2. After browsing the internet for a couple of hours, it will get very slow and then will freeze. I kill it and reopen, it is OK for awhile. Also have had this happen in WinXP using same versions. Any idea what could be the problem? Art

I have been away from Linux for a couple of months but am now back with a vengeance. I have installed SuSE 8.2 Pro w/o problems and wish to set-up fetchmail/postfix and/or cyrus. Whenever I have done this before, I have used the postfix aliases database to distribute incoming mail. Is there an alternative which would allow my users to define their own aliases? Also, how could I automate the distribution of each users mail to their IMAP folder (once I have that set up correctly)? If these questions are a bit vague, please forgive me and point me to a suitably hand-holding how-to or other documentation. Thanks in advance -- Sylvanus A. Modem worked on SuSE 8.2 doe not work on 9.0

I have just installed SUSE 9 on my Dell laptop and the modem is detected by YAST2 but does not work. When first detecting it, it doesnot allow you to select from the list because there is no list of /dev entries. If you step through the setup a second time, you can select /dev/modem. However, it does not work. The error given by kinternet is that there is no response from the modem. Minicom says the modem is busy, WV dial reports an input/output error. I have tried installing and compilling the pctel driver, but it does not make any difference. However, the key to this I think is that /var/log/messages reports that the parport module cannot load properly. As I dont have a modem, I cannot tell u the exact output, however it is something along the lines of parport: cannot initialise device device or resource busy I have tried most things in the FAQ including changing the IRQ and checking the links to /dev/modem. It appears that the highest ttyS device is 3. The others (non GPL compliace) although I did have to hack the kernel version checker as it didnt like the way SuSE had named the kernel with non numerical characters. I am a little stuck as to why this doesnt work could it be related to APM and ACPI? It is strange because when it worked, I had to select Other(not detected) from the list of modems, and now when it gives the chipset, it doesnt set it up properly. SUSE 9 also loads an IBM modem driver on startup which I tried disabling and it made no difference. I also tried loading and unloading the sound drivers, which again made no difference. I am rather annoyed about this as it worked perfectly in SuSE 8.2 and I may have to downgrade until I can get it working or get DSL! KDE or GNOME ?

Hi Just searching for opinions on using KDE or GNOME, which is most popular in LINUX, I have used both and coming from a Solaris background like KDE as it is most comfortable to me, but if GNOME is easier or has the biggest following then I want to guide customers of mine to that work environment and use GNOME myself also to get better acclimated. A few issues with 9.0

Hi all, I got 9.0 when it came out in Germany and am wondering if anyone is having the same problems I'm having. 1. the file associations for OpenOffice.org are not setup. This should really be a no brainer. It opens the file in Ark. I've fixed the problem but this is just silly. Is their a fix in the works 2. When I try to install 9.0 on my laptop (HP ze4125) It gets to the welcome screen and nothing more. You can't choose a safe kernel or anything. The guys at the local LUG were also stumped. I'm going to try to make my own boot cd (no floppy drive) and install over the network when I have time. The other versions booted very nicely. This is quite a popular laptop. 3. Sometimes when I killed the x server with control + alt + backspace everything froze. It seemed to only occur when I was setup with auto login. it works fine now that I've added my wife's account. If these things have been mentioned then kindly let me know.

What files to backup prior to upgrade (LONG)

Hello All, I have used SuSE since 6.5 and have used it as my home network server distro since 7.2. However, I have never fresh installed to this server. I merely backed up the important data files from mysql and smb.conf as I have /home as a separate partition (for 5 users) and a partition called /public for windbloze files and other common files. So I have never really had to change anything. However, I want to do a complete fresh install of 9.0, I might go with 8.2 while I am waiting for 9.0 to ship (it is backordered for me) and want to know since I will be going from a single partitioned 40G IDE to two 40 G IDE drives, what it important to save and or backup. I have 8.0 on it now with mission critical data in /var/lib/mysql as well as BRU for tape backup. I don't want to have to re-create all the samba stuff as it works well as a samba server now for the winbloze machines. Any recommendations on partitioning would be helpful., Right now I pplan to split one of the 40 G into a 15 G partition for /home and 25G for /public. I had reiserfs for both now, should I stick with that or use FAT for the /public since a majority of the stuff is winbloze for my wife and kids and I have a ton of Linux files for various distros there for personal use. YaST2 Problem

Help... I'm trying to use YaST2 (SuSE 8.2 Pro) to update kde. I've downloaded the files from the SuSE website into a local directory and have added that directory to the installation sources in YaST. That source is enabled and the only other source is disabled. I've tried starting with Install/Uninstall Software and System Update. Both lead to the same problem, i.e the dependencies appear to be circular. In order to install one update, kde3 for example, I have to install kdelibs3 first. But kdelibs3 requires some other package which requires something else, etc. It appears that the only way I can get past the dependency check is to either 1) ignore dependices and risk system instability OR 2) uninstall a whole bunch of stuff, most of which I don't even know the purpose of. Can anyone give me some advice on how to proceed? Thanks in advance. Don Henson

Why is RPM arch i386 for i686 macros?

In my per-platform rpm macros I find: # ---- per-platform macros. # %_arch i386 %_vendor suse %_os linux %_target_platform %{_target_cpu}-%{_vendor}-%{_target_os} %optflags -O2 -march=i686 This causes rpm to build its binary in the RPMS/i386 directory, not in RPMS/i686 as I'd expect. Is this a mistake, or is there a reason all Intel binaries should go under i386, even though the other arch directories are there in the RPMS tree? When I run /usr/lib/rpm/config.guess I get: i686-suse-linux which is where I found the per-platform macros quoted above. I'm trying to learn rpm, and hope some of the experts here can enlighten me a bit. I can edit that macro file, of course, but I'd rather have a bit more info before doing that. TIA, Jim

Amsn works fine, but seems to be a one-protocol thing. The beauty of gaim is that you use one client for all protocols: msn, jabber, icq, aim, etc ... There must be a way of getting gaim to work. Hi everybody.... I am using KDE 3.0.x not yet 3.1 and SuSE Linux 8.1 . I have written a web enabling database application with PHP4. The users use the application with internet browser mozilla. My boss said that his sellers may only use the internet browser for the database application. So how can I lock everything in KDE 3.0.x ? I want after the user login, the mozilla will be automatically launched. I also want if they close the mozilla than the user will be automatically kicked out (log out). Is it possible with KDE 3.0.x? authentication

Can you configure authentication to go through a database, like postgres or mysql? I've got this lanky process of cyrus-imap --> saslauth --> pam --> who knows where (/etc/passwd). But since I don't have $HOME for these imap accounts I would rather not mess with /etc/passwd if I can help it. Suggestions on what's an alternative that can be readily managed?
