Linux 9 installa error

hi.. i have installed succesfully a Suse Linux 8.2 on my desktop ( packard bell i-media..Athlon xp 1800 - 512 RAM - USB keyboard and MS usb Mouse). Today i've bought a Suse Linux 9.0 Professional and i was not able to install the system, even booting from DVD,even from Cd's. the setup stops to Activating USB devices... and here hangs.. how can i solve this big problem? thx

how to start daemon using different user?

Hi, I want my server to start postgresql daemon automaticcally whenever my server reboots.. Is there a way to have it run by postgres user using the boot.local file in /etc/rc.d/? It seems my cmos battery is going down and each time I boot to suse or legacy the time gets hosed. Is there a script for looking up the time online and setting the clock? Should it be called in /etc/init.d/boot.local ?? So that it does not matter which user or root signs onto the box?? USB Mouse stops responding

All.. I sent out a request on Tuesday with a different subject line, but I thought that I'd try again to see if anybody has any wisdom to share. Periodically (say once every day or two, sometimes more often), I get a chunk like the below in /var/log/messages: Oct 21 09:54:03 talon kernel: hub.c: already running port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling... Oct 21 09:54:03 talon kernel: usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:07.2-1 address 7 Oct 21 09:54:03 talon kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:07.2-1, assigned address 8 Oct 21 09:54:03 talon kernel: input0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse] on usb1:8.0 While it seems to come back to life ok, my USB mouse is now assigned to /dev/ input/mouse1, while X is still listening to /dev/input/mouse0. The only way that I've found to get my mouse working again is to: 1. logout 2. From Console: init 3; /etc/init.d/hotplug restart; init 5 3. Login again The machine is a Dell Inspiron 4000. This is truely frustrating; does anybody know a solution? I never saw this while I was running SuSE 8.0; it only started occuring after my 8.2 upgrade, but I understand that this may be a red hering. I've tried googling, but haven't found anything relevant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Speaking of MPlayer...

I may have missed this in another thread so forgive me if it's been covered. I have MPlayer installed on 9.0 (via apt) and although the plugin works and I can play .avi files and such by clicking on the file name, I can't get MPlayer itself to display. I had no problem with this in 8.2; the player interface would pop right up when called but no such luck in 9.0. Is this a SuSE or MPlayer problem? Thanks! Zach

SuSE 9.0 - Kmenu problems

I've just done a clean install of SuSE 9.0 anfd I have a problem with the menu system. I find that programs I install are not showing up on the KDE menu. If I use the menu editor, all the programs are there. It's as if the menu button on the screen is opening up a completely different menu (a much smaller subset) to the one in the menu editor. Now, I remember that there used to be a SUSE menu and a KDE menu and you could easily be editing one of them but actually using the other. However, I can't find anything in the control center that refers to a separate SuSe or KDE menu. Can anyone offer a suggestion? I'm getting tired of having to launch apps from the command line! Graphical theme during bootup (bootsplash)

When my SuSE 9.0 boots up it does so without using a bootsplash theme. Bootsplash packages are installed so how do enable these at startup? TIA

samba, firewall, konqueror lan browsing problems

Have several problems that I cannot solve in the above matter. 1. When I do the samba client setup with the firewall running, I get a message that samba client detected and that port 139 must be enabled. At this time, samba cannot find the domain. I go to the firewall configuration and enable port 139. Still same thing. I have to disable the firewall in order for samba to work. Why does enabling port 139 not work or is there something I am missing? 2. With Samba working, and after setting up Lisa and windows share tabs in control center network per the info on the suse dataabase, when I click the local network icon on the desktop, konqueeror opens with the smb:/ and a libsmbclient reported an error, but didn't specify what the problem is. This might indicate a severe problem with your network - but also might indicate a problem with libsmbclient. If I replace the smb:/ with lan:/ then I get a listing of all of the computers on the network. I click on the computer name, then the smb folder, I get a dialog box to login. One time would not be so bad, but every folder under that then gives another login dialog box. I would have thought the windows share config should have taken care of that. I even put the alias in the smb.conf file and setup the passwaord file per the instructions and this also does nothing. Is there any way to get it to operate so one does not always have to login for every directory? Art

SuSE 9.0 Upgrade

Well, I took the plunge and did an upgrade from 8.2 rather than a clean install. I had a full backup in case anything went wrong but it went very smoothly. It was encouraging as well as discouraging that three problems I had before the upgrade were still there after the upgrade. Apparently, those are my problems to resolve. Anyway, I just wanted to add my experience to those of others who have reported their upgrade/install experiences. Don Henson
