Linux CD-RW Driver?

Has anyone seen any drivers for the Creative CD-RW RW4224E? My SuSE 8.0 system is recognizing it as a SCSI device....which obviously is incorrect given its a IDE device. go into Yast and there is a run level editor, if httpd (apache) is installed you'll see it there, be sure it goes on for run levels 3, 4 and 5. If it ain't in there try #which httpd. If you have to install it new be sure to use updated openssh if you use ssl. there's a write up about why at openssh.org. yast2 installer - ftp dosent wotk

Hello I just finish dowing a ftp install and forgot to install the gcc compiler... So as root i tried to install it using the same ftp (internal) and i always get: "Error pakage ftp:192.168.0.1/suse/8.0/suse/d2/gcc-2.95.3-219.i386.rpm returns a errorFile not found...." So i tried to connect using Konqueror and i could and the file is infac there any one know what could be whrong? Im using SuSE 8.0. Thanks Christiasn

Hey Dirk, run a man personal-firewall query and see what you find on Suse 8.0. zilch. matter of fact search every help doc suse.com has on the web and see what you find too. zilch or next to it. personal-firewall blocks all incoming connections... and that is about it. likewise run your normal iptables commands on see what you find on suse 8.0. zilch. no normally I don't run Suse Dirk hope that is OK with you. Unfortunately Photopaint seems to require more. I've got WP8.1 up and running, installed all the stuff needed for that. But Photopaint won't install. The installer runs, installs but exits prematurely, giving some error that I didn't understand and can't remember now. Yast online update

Hi People, I am new to this very impressive and helpful list. I have a Yast related problem. I own Suse 8.0 and last night I was using online update but lost internet connection. But the update module didnt stop, even though I clicked "back" and "abort" keys, so I killed it(probabaly a few times). Now it doesnt start. I reinstalled this module from CD but nothing. It initiliazez and then disappears. There seems to be something wrong with the "/etc/suservers" file but I couldnt spot it... any ideas? cheers -- Baris Erbas

Corel Photo Paint

Since I got SuSE 8.0 (about two months ago), I've been battling to get Corel Photopaint up and running. I have both the deb and rpm versions, neither work. I've done all the stuff suggested on Corel's website (although I suspect that's way out of date), to no avail. I even tried jumping through all the hoops that makes it work on RedHat 7.x - no go Has anybody gotten this to work in SuSE 8.0? Any ideas? Player for video CD

I know that I have worked with video cd's but after some reorganising and reinstalling my computer I do not remeber which program worked. I seem to have a memory problem ;-). Could somebody help me with the names of programs that work? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

Sax2 is bad + nVidia

Forgive me for this wild accusation. Ever since I first started using SuSE 8.0 Pro, I've been trapped in a horribly flickering 60hz display. Sax2/Yast2 detects my monitor correctly my name and model ("LG Studioworks 55V"), but the refresh/scan rates are detected incorrectly, and never twice the same. So I fix that by hand, but I'm still only getting 60hz refreshrate, even in 640x480. Even specifying a different monitor - a 19" just for kicks - didn't get any better results. Eventually I gave up and ran good old xf86config, copied the font and anti-aliasing lines from the old XF86Config file, and now everything is fine. Just thought I'd share this because I see a lot of posts about Sax2, most of them along with nVidia. Maybe Sax2 just isn't very good at configuring displays that are connected to nVidia cards? I must be very lucky, becuase I've never had any trouble with either of the four nVidia cards I have (two AGP TNT2s, one PCI TNT2, one AGP GeForce2. No problem installing and getting the drivers to work, no problem with the performance. In fact, in games like Quake3 and Wolfenstein these cards consistently perform better in linux than in windows in the same game. In Wolfenstein it's the difference between not being able to play the game and being able (celeron 500...). So maybe nVidia isn't all that bad. Yes, I agree it would be nice if they provided opensource drivers, but at least all their cards are support almost as soon as they hit the market. Oh, and by the way, I've been drooling over the ATI Radeon cards for a long time now, I'm really a fan. But when I buy that ATI card it's going to be whatever is at the top of their line. And if ATI hasn't sorted out this driver business before then, I'm going to have to use that other OS a hell of a lot more than I'd like to... Well as a for instance, I generally use access.conf (/etc/security/access.conf) to define who can and cannot login to the system either locally or remote... I can edit the file but the system ignores it.. doesn't work on suse8.0 and it's a big problem... the machine cannot go online unless certain criteria, even in hosts.allow are defined for my users. We've been hacked too many times previous, I make certain changes to my redhat /etc files for security, mostly learned 'em from bastille and the like, and they work. Except on Suse8.0. any suggestions? This system is only half secured without these files being tailored to my specifications exactly. What about hosts.allow and dey? if changes to access.conf are ignored how do I know for sure that the rest aren't going to be equally ignored? SuSEconfig only works with certain files, how do you get it to update the rest for it's memory? truthfully, i like the idea of Yast, it can disable unwanted changes real nice, but actually configuring the machine with out any specific instructions as to how to control yast is a real headache. you look in the book and it talks plenty about kmail... like that is such a mystery... I guess that's the question. right now yast is controlling the system. I need to move it out of the way, configure the system properly, then get it back in place and working according to my rules, not it's own. We'll be hacked within 2 days if I put that thing online as is..
