2.4.19 VM/Athlon kernel

Well, as promised my feedback after a weekend running Hubert's 2.4.19 build for Athlon on my 8.0 boxen at home. The VM seems to be a lot better than in 2.4.18 - the kernel reports more memory, and more memory available. The overnight updatedb still results in some memory not being correctly relinquished, but significantly less than under 2.4.18 is retained, and this is freed up more easily. The machine isn't swapping at all (oh, I think there may be 1M of swap in use, but that's no great worry). All in all that's two thumbs up for the 2.4.19 k_athlon from Hubert. 8.1 - pre-orders in Sweden, plus q's

Hey all, For those of us in Sweden, linuxstore.se said they'll start taking pre-orders for SuSE 8.1 sometime this weekend. 8.0 was a nice upgrade from 7.3, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to 8.1 even more, esp. with the new installation stuff. Questions arise, though... 1- 8.1 comes with Apache 2.0.40 . I'm still using 1.x, and haven't tried 2.x because I've heard of problems concerning compatibility with outside services, like PHP. I'm a Perl CGI scripter at heart, but have been studying PHP to use if needed some day. Will I be able to do this with the new Apache? If not, will SuSE come with the old Apache as well? Or can I install it alongside the new Apache? Ugh, loaded question. ;-) 2- Generally speaking, will RPMs I built (with checkinstall) in the 8.0 system work on 8.1? I'm looking at the new gcc that comes with it. I'm not that familiar with incompatibility problems, but I've heard that there may be. I compiled with the gcc that came with 8.0. Or would it be best to recompile these with the newer gcc? 3- Having an i686 system, should I expect much of a difference in using 8.1 (optimized for i586) over 8.0 (optimized for i386)? I have no clue when it comes to this question. My computer is used mainly for web design/CGI scripting, surfing, mail and such. Work. ;-) With the occasional MAME game. Since no one seemed to notice this one let me clarify. My machine is an HP Pavillion 5270 running Suse 8. I'm trying to get the serial port to talk to my palm device. Firewall2 config.... DNS what?

Dear susers, I have been sending a whole bunch of messages to this list regarding SuSEfirewall2. I have a Linux box (SuSE7.2 installed) and I have upgraded firewall to SuSEfirewall2 (managed to install iptables as well). The network configuration is simple: The SuSE box acts as a DHCP server and a Samba server as well. IPs for clients range in the 192.168.10.0 range with linux being 192.168.10.1. Squid is up and running (tested this and works ok) on port 8080. All machines can ping eachother and the linux box. So far so good! All problems begun when the clients of the Server started to request connections to programs such as Winmx and Mirc. So I started to play with SuSEfirewall2 since I have seen in the past in this list similar questions and they all managed to get things going with the help of SuSEfirewall2. The script executes and Squid works, as well as samba. DHCP continues to work just fine. However, mirc and winmx will not operate. Mirc kept saying that it couldn't resolve the servers. So I entered rcSuSEfirewall2 stop and tried to execute the test firewall as follows: #csh#> SuSEfirewall2 test and among other lines, I get something like this (please forgive me because I am away fromw the linux box now): Found named running setting FW_DNS to yes ... FW_DNS is set to yes but there is no DNS server found running! I cannot understand why it is saying this so I thought I should send it to the list and see if someone could help me. Forgive this late reply - I'm about 2000 messages behind... What you really should be looking at when looking for a modem, especially if you know that you'll probably get a software modem, is what chipset it is based on, not who makes it. AFAIK there are a number of lucent based modems that work in Linux. I've never had one to try it out, but I can definitely vouch for the conexant based ones. Conexant has drivers for their modems. http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/hcf/ My Conexant HCF modem (a zoltrix smart spirit) works without any hassles. In fact, it works a lot better than it ever did in that other OS. Before this one I had a Conexant HSF based one (zoltrix cobra) that worked fine too. meant to say 'there' not 'here'. yea, the access.conf works real well on the RH too, I still can't get it to respond on the suse. getting tired of reading docs for something that normally takes 5 minutes to get done... something is not configured normally in there... and all I know is it's real important here... and I should have it there... just wish I knew what it was... beginning to wonder if I actually care... considering the fact that all the software is linux software with all the same vulnerabilities and assest as any linux version... well... it has to be protected and updated the same way... I mean obviously.. when it becomes a problem what is your time worth to deal it just so that yast can work? It's still linux no matter which way you look at it.
