Shell Scripting Problem

Greetings All, Well I guess my problem is that I'm trying to run a script written for the Bourne shell on what is really bash. I was hoping that I could work on shell scripts at home for my class at U of MD. Since the university runs Sun OS v2.6 they don't seem to run on my SuSE 7.3 box. I tried reading the man pages for bash, hoping to glean some method of making bash pretend to be bourne, but if its there I can't figure it out. Does anyone know if it is possible to run scripts written for bourne under bash? Is it possible to install the Bourne Shell in SuSE? Are any current distro's available with bourne? I really like SuSE so I'll keep it on my primary box, but if RedHat or Mandrake, etc... can provide this functionality, I'd gladly buy one of them for one of my other home boxes. Please point me in the right direction if you can. Thanks, steve

I think the person means "Packet Writing". Now I am very hazy on the subject, but basically you can drag individual files over and it burns them on the fly, and also you can delete files [as it says below] but not get the space back. Shell Scripting Problem

Greetings, I'm new to both Linux and shell scripting. As part of the first project for a class I'm taking, my professor prepared a simple "Phonebook" bourne shell script. My customization only consisted in setting the global variable "Phonebook" relative to $HOME. It ran as expected on the University's Sun OS Server (v 2.6?), I could add, remove, list, look-up, and exit(the options provided for.) When I tried to run it on my home box (7.3 Pro), after chsh to /bin/sh from my original shell (I verified via "env" that my shell was changed), it acted "differently". Instead of prompting me that it was creating the Phonebook for me, it just showed the option display (which is the second thing that I expected to happen.) Instead of the cursor hanging out where it belonged, it printed the "\c" and moved down, so I removed that from the script, and added the "-n" flag to echo, which fixed that. The script allowed me to add a name/number, and I could open the "phonebook" created and see it, but when I entered the option for looking-up that entry, or the option for listing the contents, nothing happened. If I selected the option to remove an entry, it worked (I could tell by opening the "phonebook".) Is my "Bourne Shell" not /bin/sh ? Is it different somehow from the Solaris version? Is there an environment variable that I need to set? Sorry for the loooong post. steve

This is exactly what I did. However, it thinks that my monitor can only handle 50-68 vert sync when it should be 50-90. Also, no matter what I try for frequencies and such it just bombs out. Why did it work so beautifully for Xfree86 4.1? Thanks! Sometimes that is required for the new software to work correctly. You may even want to delete or move your old XF86config file so there are no previous settings involved. This way sax2 can reread your hardware. I tried to setup X using the new Xfree86 4.2.0 servers and sax2 latest update from the ftp server. I had X working fine w/ Xfree86 4.1.0. Now it keeps defaulting to 50-68 vert sync, when my monitor does 50-90 vert sync @ 60hz refresh. I got Xfree86 4.2.0 by changing the config file by hand, but now Xfine does not work and the screen is partially of the monitor on the right side. (I use this monitor for two PC's. So I cannot just use the dial to move the screen over.) NeoFax

VMware scripts are created twice and is a real pain

Hello, I've installed VMware 3.0 on a computer where important work is done. Every time SuSEconfig or vmware-config.pl are run, separate symlinks of vmware are created in rc5.d. One ends up with two sets of start/kill links. The result causes the virtual machine to not start and no work can be done. The user of the machine is a non technical person, needless to say I get a phone call every time this person can't get the program to run and hints that it would better to ditch linux and go back to MS Windows. The culprit seems to be vmware-config.pl, since it creates the symlinks without using "innsserv". I would really appreciate if SuSE and VMware worked out this problem. -- Rafael

Putting Laptop into SUSPEND takes out NIC + CPU IDLE problems

Hi, I am running 7.3 on a Toshiba Satellite 1800 and I have a very irritating problem. Whenever I try and put it into SUSPEND state I lose the networking from the inbuilt NIC. I checked the apmd config file (/etc/rc.config.d/apmd.rc.config) There is the following option: # If you have a built in NIC that does not survive a suspend/resume cycle # properly, you can add the interface name to this variable. It will then be # shut down before suspend and brought up after resume. # Default: "" APMD_INTERFACES_TO_STOP="eth0 lo" I set this as above but it still doesn't work. :( Has anyone else seen this problem? I'm running from within KDE, BTW. Also, I've noticed that the CPU fan is a lot more active in SuSE than in Windows (it's a dual boot system). The fan kicks in every couple of minutes, even when little is going on. It's as if the CPU idle (HLT) instructions aren't being sent (my kernel is configured to allow CPU IDLE instructions). Would be grateful for any insight on this. Thanks,
